My plan was to be awake by 730am so that I could comfortably be out of the house by 1045am and at the golf course by 1145am. That meant I had 3.25 hours to accomplish everything I needed to get done, which included exercising, walking Sparky, running, relaxing, and packing snacks for a days worth of golf. Originally, I thought that I might need to drop Glenn off at my Dad’s too, but he ended up sticking around the house and making his own arrangement, whether that meant that he was walking or calling for a ride I wasn't sure. But come to think of it, since I had my cell phone with me, I’m sure he walked!
I left the house right on queue. What would later turn out to be a major faux paux, I dressed in shorts and a light long sleeved running shirt. Oh boy! The golf course (Willow Run) was about 32 miles from my home and according to mapquest a 39 minute drive. Of course, as most men do, I tried to further improvise and cut some distance off by taking a different route. Can you say mistake?? I somehow got off track and wasted I’d say about 20 minutes and maybe 10 miles in distance. Even still, I was at the course by 1145am. That's yet another reason to leave yourself plenty of time so that even in the face of an unfortunate event you can still be on time. I was! In fact, I was still early.
The golf outing was probably the most organized outing I had ever participated in. There were door prizes, food, and lots of beer. There were 144 golfers signed up and they had purchased 50 cases of beer! My goodness! By the time I had arrived at the course the clear blue sunny skies had given way to some sparsely placed October clouds. And anytime the sun would dip behind one, the air temp would seemingly dip by about 10 degrees. That coupled with the chilly NW breeze made it feel like winter! Looking around, there were plenty of golfers suited up in winter golf gear and most in long pants and sweatshirts. Here I was in shorts and a long sleeved tee-shirt. It was cold and getting even colder! I drank coffee but nothing helped curb the chill. Just before teeing off, I remember having a jacket in the back of my truck. I went and retrieved it. It made all the difference at least for my upper body which was most important. The extra chilly breeze continued to find its way up my short pant legs though! We were scheduled to tee off at 1230pm but didn’t start until about 105pm. Even though it was a shot gun start, it still took about 5.5 hours to finish, and by the time that we did it was really chilly!
Over the course of the afternoon I consumed more junk food than I have in probably two years. I had cookies, candy bars, nuts, slim jim’s, hot dogs, hamburgers and soda. I felt hopelessly bloated on my drive home. That’s a feeling I don’t miss! I got back home around 732pm. I had made arrangements to visit Mindy after golf, so after a quick shower and walk with Sparky, I headed over to her house. We hung out for about three hours.
