Why I Like Fridays

Like Monday, Friday presents both a beginning and an ending. However, unlike Monday, Friday offers both a happy ending and an equally happy beginning. It's the end of the long work week but the beginning of the weekend, or probably better put, the beginning of a personal reprieve. In my particular case, it's where I transition from Jim the manager to Jim the being. Either way, lots of happy things happen on Friday's. For example, many of us get paid on Fridays, and many of us go out to one or more of our favorite places, whether that’s a restaurant, bar, bookstore, or a friend’s house. And for me, the excitement begins the moment I get up and realize that it’s Friday. Add to that mix a pair of jeans, a favorite tee shirt, and some extra comfy shoes and one has all the ingredients necessary to make the ideal day. Uh-Ohh! I woke once during the night and still had three hours of sleep to be had. However, the next thing I knew it was 615am! Shit – over slept again. I knew this would happen given that I was up until midnight. Jimmy needs his beauty sleep. Yeah, that’s how I get my good looks, stamina, and positive happy-go-lucky attitude! Come to think of it, that’s where I get my arrogance too! J Despite my late start I still refused to short change my morning routine because it means so much to my peace of mind. The world won’t end if I get to work a few minutes late. Besides, I’m there late in the evening and early in the morning considerably more than I am late. I took my time exercising, walking Sparky, meditating, packing my lunch, and cooking breakfast. The sky was partly cloudy, or as I like to say partly clear, when I walked Sparky. I thought that today might be another BM’er day because, after all, it was a Friday, and nothing says Friday like the BM’er, Barleys and, ahhhh, beer! Well, that wasn’t to be because a funny thing happened…when I pulled up the Weather Bug it showed today as a sunny day. But while I was reading more detail it changed before my eyes to cloudy and a 30% chance of rain. I decided to pull the plug on the BM’er thing. No big deal! I had a good convertible day yesterday. I arrived to work around 815am – not bad for waking 45 minutes late! The first half the day went extremely fast. I had a couple of customer calls that helped ensure a brisk morning. I left the office for my run at my usual 1215pm. The sky couldn’t decide whether it was gonna be gray or sunny. However, by the time I finished my run it had. The clouds gave way to blue skies! Cool! My afternoon was fairly light by design. The workload was very manageable, especially for a Friday. We all deserve a Friday like that! My after work plans had been sketchy all week and all day. My brother Glenn was flying in today but wasn’t expected until 930pm. Tom Clark, my long lost running buddy, is in town from Bahrain and everyone’s meeting up for happy hour at On The Rock’s in Dublin. If that’s not enough, it’s Barley night! And unless you’ve been under a rock somewhere, you know that’s where I like to be on a Friday evening. Indeed the options are many. In typical Jimmy fashion, I tried to drink in a piece of each event. After work I headed immediately to OTR in hopes of hooking up with Tom Clark. And while I didn’t want to stay long or drink any beer, I hoped to share some stories and make plans for dinner or golf before he heads back over seas. However, in classic Tom style, he didn’t show, at least while I was there. I waited just short of 1.5 hours. I really had no desire to hang at OTR otherwise. It’s just not my thing. Next stop – home! At home I walked Sparky, snuck in a quick nap, and then headed to Barley’s for a relaxing Friday with friends, and yes, I drove the BM'er. I hung at Barley’s until 1015pm or so. I gave Mindy a call once home. We talked for a long time.
