Cough, Cough, Spin, Spin...

I woke in the middle of the night and knew instantly what I would do. I would heed my doctors advice and take a day off of work to relax a little. My neck and shoulder pain is definitely a physical ailment but also one that is often exacerbated by stress, and I seem to have a lot of work related stress lately. As I made my decision, I checked the weather forecast and to my surprise, it had changed for the better. No longer were they calling for a 20 degree temperature drop and cloud cover. Instead they were calling for sunny skies and temps approaching 83 degrees. Holy Cow! Another summery day. As I fell back asleep, I knew that my taking a personal day was meant to be. I got up at 630am and did my normal morning routine. If I were to truly relax and enjoy a stress free day, I would have to knock out my daily requirements early, so I did. I also knew that the best way for me to relax and enjoy myself would be to spend a few hours on my boat. And since the weather was being so cooperative, that was the plan. After running I readied myself and packed for a day at the river. I took my guitar, camera, book, and cooler. However, before heading to my dad's to pick up the boat I stopped at the store to pick-up a few things in an attempt to brighten Mindy's day. She's been under the weather yet still on the go with her children and work. A single mother's job is never done and there is little if any opportunity to get rest, even when they're sick and tired. I understand that. I made her a little care package and took it over and dropped it on her porch for her to find when she arrives home from work. On my way to pick up the boat I realized that I had left the boat plug on my counter. I don't think that I want to forget to place the plug in the boat again. That was scary last time. I stopped and picked it up on my way. Once at my dads I was surprised to find him attaching his new used boat to his Blazer. He was going boating too! He told me that he and my Uncle Kenny were heading up to Griggs Reservoir. Cool, that'll be fun! We were at the dock within 20 minutes of me arriving to pick up the boat. It was very beautiful outside - clear blue skies and warm temps. I couldn't wait to put-in. We put our boats in simultaneously. Dad got his started after only a few minor struggles. To my chagrin, mine wouldn't start. The boat seems to be having the same old problem it had back when it was new in 91'. Sometimes it just doesn't seem to want to turnover. After a few minutes, however, it generally does, and today was no exception. Ahhh! The freshness of the warm October air. I was feeling totally stress free. And more importantly, pain free. My shoulder and back were not hurting at all. My doctor's a smart guy! We headed north as we typically do, up to our favorite little spot north of Bethel but shy of Rt.161 where the river gets lazy and tranquil. Oh yeah! This is what relaxation is all about! We spent the afternoon chit chatting and soaking up the sun. Uncle Kenny needed to be at an appointment of some sort around 3pm, so dad pulled anchor and took UK back to the dock around 240pm. While they were gone I played my guitar and then read a little. The guitar sounded so good outdoors in the wild - certainly better than it sounds at home. Dad returned only to tell me he was heading back to the dock yet again, except this time he was planning to pick-up Sheila who was coming up after work. This time I napped and it felt incredibly good! They showed up around 400pm and we spent the next half hour chatting. Mindy gave me a call sometime around 4pm ttoo and we firmed plans for me to stop by her home for a couple of hours this evening. I was looking forward to seeing her. We pulled anchor sometime around 5pm and headed back. It was nearly 6pm when I was within and eye shot of my dads place to drop the boat. Before heading to Mindy's, I needed to walk Sparky, take a shower, and take care of a couple incidentals. I made it to Mindy's house at around 720pm, I think. We spent the next couple of hours enjoying each others company. My day off was very relaxing. I felt ready to tackle the world again tomorrow!
