Com-Til and Guys & Dolls

I woke gracefully Saturday morning feeling about as good as anyone could expect. However, given that I was a good boy Friday night and consumed only two bottled beers and then went to bed early it’s no wonder. I was up at 6:45am. The sun was out, but it was nowhere near as crystal clear as it was all day Friday. Instead, the sky was chalked full of wispy clouds, which allowed the sun still to shine but diffused. I whipped my exercises and went about walking Ykraps al before 7:30am. Upon my return I made some coffee and took to email and surfing the web. I took sometime to add pictures to my blog entries that have been missing for almost a week. By then it was almost 8:30am so I took to my run. Once gain, my run was both fulfilling and pleasurable. The weather of late has been outstanding for running. Once I cooled down and returned inside, it was 9:20am. After another cup coffee and a couple more email, I was getting ready for my trip to the Central Ohio Compost facility off of Jackson Pike for some Com-Til. But before heading there, I had to stop by my dad’s to connect up his hauling trailer. I was on the road by 10:15 destined for Grove City. I gave Mindy a call along the way. She was up and doing her usual Saturday routine. I teased her about doing things that could just as easily be done in winter, but that’s how it is when you’re accountable to more than just yourself. We must have talked for 15 minutes, or just before I turned in to the Compost facility. I told her that I’d call her later. I hadn’t been down her in a number years – probably 15-16 years. It’s changed a lot. The first thing you do is weigh your vehicle. Then, you precede to the assigned bay where a large front loader dumps/fills your vehicle with Com-Til. Afterwards, you pull back onto the scales to determine the weight for cost purposes. Bottom line, the cost to fill the trailer was $20.34 with tax. I estimated that this same load purchased at Ohio Mulch in bags would’ve cost me $70 – quite a savings! And for those of you unfamiliar, this Com-Til is processed sewage (shit) mixed with very fine mulch. This stuff makes your flowers & vegetables just explode! Until recently, there had been rumors that it wasn’t safe for veggies, but that rumor’s since been dispelled. I use it on trees too. This stuff is the best fertilizer I’ve come across, and it’s all natural. Now, they have a finer variety that’s even less expensive that is intend to be used as a soil amender or top dressing for lawns, which can be applied with a spreader. The only down side to this stuff is that it smells very pungent. It stinks like shit! Each year I forget just how strong it is. Too, it makes for a real nice mulch if put on heavy enough, which I do in all my beds where I will be growing flowers or vegetables. I was home with my ‘shit’ before 11:20am, and went right about doing the deed. First, however, I had to get my tractor and saddle up my yard trailer to simplify the loading and dumping. This trailer I bought last spring is one of the smartest yard tools I’ve invested in. It saves lots of wear and tear on my aging body. Before digging in, I hooked up my ghetto blaster so that I wouldn’t miss the NFL draft updates. All ready, I got down to business. For the next 3 hours I stayed busy spreading Com-Til into my front flower beds carefully contouring it to lay pretty and functional. I also added some to the tow primary beds I use for veggies – one in the back and another on the east side of the house. After I depleted my Com-Til pile, I resorted to performing a final grade of the remaining flower beds encircling my house. This is always a tedious process and one I have overlooked in years past. But I always do a rough grade and debris removal. When doing the final grade you typically remove old mulch that is serving no useful purpose along with fine pebbles a stones that surface after a years worth of rain and edging. It makes the application of new soil, Com-Til or mulch a much easier job and certainly more attractive. Lastly, I placed all of the old mulch mixed with old top soil onto the spot where I dumped all my edgings – around the removed tree stump. This helped level that area and ready it for grass seed. I did this right up until 5:00pm when I decided to call it quits for the day. And the first thing I did was call Princess who was at her friend Tara’s 50th birthday party. We are planning to attend her nephew’s school play tonight at Central Crossing High School. They are performing a rendition of Guy’s and Doll’s, which originally opened on Broadway on November 24th, 1950, and was later released as a motion picture in 1955 starring Marlon Brando & Frank Sinatra. We firmed up our plans to meet at her house between 6:15 & 6:30pm. I had, essentially, one hour to shower, shave, dress, walk Ykraps, drop my dad’s trailer back at his house, and drive to Mindy’s. Ready – Set - Go! I made it with little stress. In fact, when I arrived at Mindy’s she wasn’t there yet. I let myself in after calling her. Her babysitter was waiting outside for her too. Mindy arrived minutes later. We somewhat quickly prepared to depart as the play was scheduled to begin at 7pm sharp. We arrived at CCHS just before 7pm and moved swiftly into the building and to our seats which were being saved by Mindy’s mother, sister, and brother-in-law. We had front row, second section, center seats – ideal! This would serve as Mindy’s nephew, Joe’s grand finale as a high school performer – something he’s been involved with throughout his entire high school career and is very good at. This was the second performance of his that I’ve seen. Joe played the role of Nicely, Nicely Johnson, which was played in the original Broadway version as well as the movie by Stubby Kaye. A bit of Guys and Dolls trivia for you, Sky Masterson’s real name (never spoken in the play) was Obadiah. The play lasted roughly 2.75 hours. The kids did a fabulous job handling the many scene changes, the singing, and keeping the audience’s interest. Overall I was very impressed! I’d have to say the best job goes to the young lady who played the role of Adelaide. We gave Mindy’s mother, Gloria, a ride home after the play and then made a beeline back to Mindy’s house. We were both rather tired and hungry. Mindy, however, still would have to run her sitter home. Once at Mindy’s, she whisked Amy off for home and I raided her cupboards for something fast. I hadn’t eaten a thing since around noon, and after all that yard work I was famished! In a weak moment, I grabbed a few handfuls of potato chips even though I generally try to avoid them for their lack of nutritional value and their deadly mixture of fat, salt, and carbs. To wash them down I cracked open a Columbus Pale Ale. While waiting on Mindy’s return, I tuned into Mad TV. It was funny! About 15 minutes into the show, Mindy arrive home. She popped me some popcorn and had some walnuts for herself. We both began falling asleep soon there after. To bed!
