Resolved To NOT Resolute

I woke shortly after 800am feeling pretty good considering all the New Year’s Eve late night excess. I am sure that choking down the two Advil before going to bed didn’t hurt my chances of waking feeling good, either. I still had that uneasy feeling in my tummy that had plagued me since late Friday afternoon, however. Before popping out of bed, Mindy insisted that we snuggle for a few. I obliged. She seems to need/like that as much as I need to run each day. After a little snuggling I was up and about the house, first draining the remnants from my kidneys and then brushing the thick film of mucus from my teeth and mouth. Reflecting back on my indulgent ways, I had drank three bottled beers at my friend Pat’s, three pints of beers and a small glass of champagne at Barley’s, and one more bottled beer at Polly’s. All of this, of course, over the span of about 6 or 7 hours. Not too bad! In addition, I had eaten half a gyro, several tortilla chips, a few spoonfuls of spinach dip, 4 or 5 sauerkraut balls, and a piece of my chocolate chip cheesecake cookie. Again, not too bad! I would’ve eaten more hadn’t my stomach been at unrest. After whipping out my exercises and dumbbells, Ykraps and I took to the streets for our first walk together of 2006. And things looked so different. The streets, the houses, and all the people we encountered looked older and worse for the wear. But I mustn’t forget the weather. The first day of year ushered in a beautiful morning with lots of sunshine, mild temps, and a still breeze. Birds were singing abundantly giving the mistaken impression that it was the first of spring rather than January 1. I was thankful for the respite, regardless. Soon Mindy found her way downstairs to the coffee pot which held a very bold pot of Starbucks Espresso Roast. There we sat sharing coffee and stories for well over two hours and probably three. Because she’d drank so much coffee, and strong stuff at that, I noticed that Mindy had a case of the hand shakes! Yikes!!! She admitted later that that coffee was too strong for even her. Meanwhile, in the back of my mind, the thirst for my daily run kept replaying over and over. Consequently, I didn’t go for my Sunday run until after Mindy left sometime after 230pm. As one might expect, though, I was getting a little giddy about not having run earlier in the day as usual. Rare is the day when I don’t have my weekend runs completed by 11am. Too, being mindful of my silly “running in shorts” goal, I went ahead and dawned shorts to lock up the January segment of my winter running goal. Of course the mild temperature made it a no-brainer. However, by now, the day’s early sunshine had faded to overcast skies, but we still had mild temperatures hovering around 45 degrees – plenty warm enough to run in shorts. That is essence leaves only February to complete the cycle. And, heck, we have days in the 70’s in February. Mindy and I had made a concerted effort to contact my eldest daughter Courtney in hopes of having her over for dinner and a late Xmas gift exchange. At first we thought we were successful, but to my dismay, she cancelled last minute. Nevertheless, Mindy and I still planned a traditional New Year’s Day dinner of pork roast, mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut at her place. Incidentally, she makes one of the tastiest pork roasts you’ll ever sink your teeth into. Furthermore, we both were keenly aware that this would be our last “free night” of the Xmas holiday, so it was only fitting that we would share it together with a nice meal. After our meal we played with the kids before putting them to bed around 8pm. From that point on we sat together on the couch talking, watching NFL football passively, and playing cards. I was able to witness the Vikings thumping of the Bears. I enjoyed it immensely despite knowing that the Vikings were going nowhere after the game. They played what appeared to be their most complete game of the season, winning 34-10. An hour after the game, however, ESPN announce that Mike Tice had been fired despite sporting a 9-7 record. Too streaky. Mindy was tired and went to bed around 10pm. I chose to stay up reading on the couch in front of the fire while the final game of the NFL regular season played out on Mindy’s Big Screen TV. It was very relaxing! After an hour or so, I could no longer keep my eyes opened. I got up, shut down the lights, and went to bed.
