BM'er Days Return Unexpectedly - Crown Jewel
I was excited about the prospect of what today would offer weather-wise. We had been promised a sunny day with temperatures approaching 60 degrees despite it being on the premature side of mid-January. That early winter blast we survived in December is nothing but a faded memory. Looking back, our December was much more like a typical January and our January is more like some of our milder Decembers. It’s hard for me to recall a January so tepid.
I didn’t plan to head directly to work this morning for having a dental appointment at 850AM. This was all the more incentive to drive the BM’er. And because of the appointment, I slept a little later too. So I was very well rested when I rolled out of bed. Like a kid at Christmas, my first goal was to peer out the window in hopes of seeing a sky filled with stars and a brilliant moon. My wishes were granted!!! After a round of exercises, Ykraps and I were out the door for our walk. Probably the price for a clear morning sky, the temperature was noticeably colder than it’s been all week. In turn, we had a coating of frost about the ground. Not to worry though, the forecast still called for it to warm up quickly.
I returned home to do my usual coffee, email, and meditation, which I finished in a total of about 30 minutes. As the early morning progressed I was more determined than ever to drive my BM’er. The sun was just beginning to rise in the east and the sky was as clear as one could expect. Because I didn’t need to rush around, I took even more time than usual getting everything ready for my day. Come 815AM I was ready to head out. But before leaving I had one additional task to completed. I quickly logged onto the Columbus Symphony’s webpage to investigate buying tickets to next weekend’s tribute to Mozart at the Ohio Theatre. I bought two tickets. This is his birthday month. He’ll be 250 years of age on January 27th and he's still going strong! After tinkering around a bit, I departed in my BM’er with the top down. Sure, it was chilly, but the sunshine and the excitement, along with the promise of a warm afternoon, off-set any temporary discomfort. I fired up the heater and aimed the vents directly on my hands at 10 and 2 o’clock. I was fine! Even more fun was that I would be driving up Riverside Dr in route to my dentist’s office (a great road to drive in the BM’er). I found their new office with little trouble, which is only right around the corner from the old one. In fact, it’s located in the same complex as my orthodontist’s Arlington office.
Once inside, I was immediately impressed by the spacious state-of-the-art facility he has. The new office is designed as much for operational efficiency as it is for comfort, convenience and quality care. I hadn’t been in to visit Dr March for several years, having changed dentists due to insurance plan coverage issues. Colleen is still at the desk and was as nice as ever. Soon I was seated in one of the four semi-private quarters which are finely appointed with leather chairs, a sound system, and a flat panel computer monitor. Immediately I struck up a conversation with Marie, one of the new dental assistants. She reports begin with Dr March for six months and raved about how nice he was to work for in comparison to many others. It seems that many are superficial in that they are rude to the help after the patients leave. No, Really???
Dr March had placed my problematic crown five years after a lengthy process. I put he and his staff through the ringer back then, but hey, I was spending lots of dollars and had interviewed him upfront to insure that he could do the work I was after. What he probably didn’t realize was that I would be relentless in my quest for perfection. A quick look at my loose crown made him think that the trouble was a loose sub structure in the bone. I wasn’t so sure of that for many reasons, and I let him know that with all due respect that I didn’t agree. I encouraged him to simply pull on the crown to see if it would come off. He did, and it did. He acknowledged that I was right after all. Hey, nobody knows better than the patient! He felt that the glue he originally used was impervious to simply coming loose.
To right the wrong, Dr March recommended that we strengthen the sub structure with a porcelain post using the same crown. Unfortunate for me this will require two additional visits. But in the end, I want it be perfect so I agreed to the more tedious process rather than simply allowing him to re-glue it back on. My thinking, of course, was that if it came off once, what would prevent it from doing so again. So, he used some temporary glue to hold me over until Monday when I’ll return for step one.
Back to the BM’er. By now it was almost 930AM. The sun was higher in the sky and the air temperature was much warmer than an hour earlier. My drive to the office was even more pleasant than the drive to the dentist. It was so nice to be able to drive the BM’er on January 12th under a beautiful blue sky.
Once at work the day progressed nicely. Before I knew it, it was time for my run. I was really looking forward to the warm temperatures and sunny skies. It was cloudless and 50 degrees when I hit the road. I enjoyed the run immensely. This was a dumbbell day so upon my return I whipped out 2000lbs. of reps. Having just increased the weight I lift by 18.75% for the first time in almost 9 years, the routine is pushing me to the wall, which is probably good. I don’t lift for bulk, however. Instead, I just want to maintain the youthful definition I’ve forged for myself over the last nine years. J
The afternoon in the office was fun, fast, and furious. But with the sun shining brightly outside, I couldn’t wait for 5 o’clock to roll around. When it did, I hit the door, threw back the top, and drove off into the sunset! At home I had to prepare for my guitar lesson. Josh and I hadn’t met for lessons in a month. He arrived right at 6PM. Tonight we reviewed and learned eight bar chords (G, C, D, A major and minor). In addition, I played Hotel California for him to demonstrate my progress. He was impressed and stated that this was our best lesson and that I am playing significantly better. My head began to swell!
After the lesson I was at a crossroad. I really wanted to visit Mindy but also knew that I’d be belly aching all weekend if I didn’t get some things down around the house. In the end I decided to remain at home and take down my Xmas tree and other decorations. Good call! I had purposefully cut off the water supply to my tree over a week ago in anticipation of this night. Subsequently, over the last week the tree has become unbelievably dry. Just the simple act of removing ornaments shook hundreds if not thousands of needles loose. In the end, more needles were on the floor than on the tree.
I was done by 815PM. After calling and talking with Mindy I blogged then retreated to my bedroom. I spent the next 15 minutes putting my bed back together. That was uplifting! Before sleeping, I read from my bed. At the risk of looking like a geek to the walls, I dawned double glasses in an experiment to see if I could read easier. To my amazement, I could. I could easily read the smallest of text. Wearing tow pair of glasses was kind of like bifocals. Granted, I must’ve looked like a geek! I don’t care, it worked!!! Come 1030PM, it was lights out!!! Good night.
