Transmission Troubles?

Perhaps it was the red full moon? A good night’s sleep was seemingly had by all, and certainly better than the one before. I rolled out of bed somewhere close to 7:40am to another clear, warm, sunny morning. After making coffee, choking down a vitamin, and exercising Bella got up and wanted to join Ykraps and I on our morning walk. We kindly accepted her company. I felt much better out of shoot than I did the morning prior. And my goals today were much simpler. After completing my Sunday run, I would be spending the better part of the day working towards finishing my door project. We’ve been blessed with dry weather for five consecutive days and now I’ll have about 6 uninterrupted hours of time to dedicate to finishing it. After Bella and I returned from our morning walk, we were surprised to see that Mindy was already up and about in the kitchen. Jacob was up too. Everyone was up and it was just after 8am. We all went out on the deck with our coffee, guitar and toys. There was plenty of wildlife again this morning milling about. Gone were the geese who seem to stay away for a day or two after being the target of my menacing ways. I guess I’ll need to maintain my disruptive pattern to keep them away more permanently. After chilling on the deck for almost an hour I retreated to the house to dawn my running gear. While I was readying for my run, Mindy started breakfast. She and the kids would be going to church and I would hook up with the three of them later in the afternoon at her mother’s for Sunday dinner. I took the Scioto Woods/Trabue/Hague Ave running route again today. I enjoy this route during the summer season for all the summery vistas it offers. The route takes me past my dad’s where today he was out tinkering with his boat. I went ahead and stopped in for a brief visit. We talked boating. He was out at Griggs last evening by himself trying out his boat. I didn’t stay long since I knew that Mindy was expecting me and needed to be leaving soon. When I returned home, Mindy was just heading out the door for church. We hugged goodbye and then I went in and woofed down some scrambled eggs and bacon. After cleaning up the breakfast mess I got organized for the door project. Today’s goals were simple. I planned to sand, caulk, prime, insulate and install the exterior trim. There would be idle time between the caulking & priming that should allow time for other tasks as well. That’s a good thing because I have a seemingly never ending list of to do’s. Things were progressing nicely, especially given that I hadn’t done much fine carpentry like this in a while. I was very please with the way it was turning out. It would be put back together better than it was originally. I reminded myself a time or two to take my time and do the little extras. I’ll feel really good if I never have to dig into this door thing again. During my break I spent time moving some lawn care materials to the shed form the garage. Eventually, my goal is to have all of my miscellaneous lawn tools like shovels, picks, hoes etc. stowed out there. While moving material to the shed, neighbor Mike stopped over to let meow that he had the new coil for my A/C unit and wanted to install it on Tuesday. That was dandy news! I would make arrangements with Mindy to see if she can be there. After Mike left I spent another hour or so working on the door. I got everything done accept the final painting which I never intended to do today anyhow. Standing back looking at the job gave me a great sense of accomplishment. By taking the time t o do a quality repair, I saved myself about $1000 over the cost of replacing the entire door. My next project is deck staining. Gotta get it done! At about 3:00pm I began putting away all of my tools. I finished cleaning up by 3:30pm. About that same time Mindy stopped over in route to her mother’s. She had spent the afternoon at her house finalizing some paperwork for the sell of her home. I got in the shower promising to be right on her heels. I left the house at 4:09pm. I arrived at Gloria’s before 4:30pm as expected. And just as I had planned, I began looking at both of the small repair projects she had mentioned last Wednesday at dinner. First I fixed the back porch light fixture that has popped loose, then went down to look at the hot water hose on her washer. She reported that it was down to a drip and took about thirty minutes to fill. Larry, Mindy’s brother-in-law, assisted since he was already looking at her dryer. Long story short, we determined that the inlet screen had lots of debris blocking the free flow of hot water. I cleaned out as much as I could without removing the valve. I knew however that if necessary it could be removed and cleaned. The flow was much better than a trickle but probably not as strong as It could be if I removed it. Gloria tested it and was happy with the flow. Soon dinner was served. We had pork chops, salad, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and rolls. Everything was top notch delicious. Lindsey phoned somewhat hysterical while we were eating dinner to tell mea bout her car’s failure. It sounded transmission related. Mindy and I took a drive over to Kelly’s after dinner and before dessert to drive it ourselves. Lindsey was worried that I would blame her for abusing the car somehow. Mindy’s nephew Joe kept and eye towards the kids while we were away. Upon arriving at Kelly’s Lindsey, as I predicted, met us outside. Kelly never once showed herself or invited us in. We took the car for a drive and at first showed no symptoms of trouble. But just around the corner the transmission began to slip and eventually fail completely. We coasted to a parking lot where we sat waiting for the transmission to reengage, but it never did. Eventually I put it in reverse where we discovered it would go backwards. Attempting, again, to go forward netted nothing. We were stuck. We backed into a parking spot and turned off the ignition and restarted the car. Finally, the transmission engaged and were able to limp it back to Kelly’s. As we pulled up, Lindsey was waiting patiently. I told her the car was fine. She was amazed! Not! I told her it was sick then proceeded to grad a plastic stethoscope form the back seat and acted as if I were trying to diagnose trouble. No one was more amused than me. Hmmm? Lindsey was all worked up and to make matters worse, she has a 9am interview Monday morning that she needs to make for the job she’s been pursuing at Calltech. Receiving no help from Kelly, Mindy and I made arrangements to retrieve her, take her to her interview and get the car towed in for repairs. When we left, she seemed relieved that her dilemma would magically be cured. Before leaving, we flagged down the ice cream man and bought lil’ Rocky a snow cone. He was excited! A great deal of thanks and appreciation goes out to Mindy for her patient and caring ways. She was the one who altered her entire day’s plan to make sure that Lindsey would get to her interview tomorrow AM. God Bless her. We returned to Mindy’s Mother’s after being gone for about 30 minutes. It was nearly time for dessert. Poking fun, Mindy informed her brother-in-law, Larry, that the Honda may need a new transmission. I could sense some discomfort between all parties. Honestly, right now, we don’t know for certain what the trouble is. We’ll see. Next thing we knew the conversation turned to her brother Craig in Florida, who was gracious enough to let us sty in his vacation home a couple of weeks ago. He’s there now and apparently reported that we left the house messy and he had to clean for two hours. Needless to say, both Mindy and I were dumbfounded. After all, we spent almost the entire last day cleaning everything, including washing all linens & towels, remaking all beds, cleaning bathrooms, showers, and vacuuming. We left it ‘better’ than we found it, or at least we thought. Hmm? Well, he’ll probably never allow us to stay there again. Sad! We moved to the kitchen for dessert. We had sheet cake – chocolate. It was yummy. At around 7:15pm we rounded up the kids, made sure they cleaned up all the toys they got out and then headed to my house. Jacob rode with me - Bella with her mother. Jacob and I arrived first and immediately leashed up Ykraps for his walk. Mindy pulled up as we were heading out the door so she joined us on the walk. After returning, Mindy readied the kids for bed. I read them a bedtime story – Not Counting Monsters – I think. Afterwards, Mind and I stepped onto the deck where we talked for about an hour before going to bed ourselves.
