Passing Showers

I slept soundly through the night. In fact, so soundly, that I didn’t wake until shortly after 6am. That’s the first time that has happened in a long, long while. Estimating that I fell asleep right about 10pm, I got almost 8 hours sleep. I glanced out the bedroom window as I was making my way to brush my teeth and recognized dry pavement but a cloudy, overcast sunrise. But by the time I had brush in mouth a downpour struck. It continued carrying on all the while I exercised. Just before leashing up Ykraps it stopped – thankfully. I made it through our entire walk without getting wet and for that I was pleased. And if the foreseeable forecast is correct, these frequent storms should pass and give way to the more typical hot, humid, and summery conditions that mirror what we’re accustomed to this time of year. That pattern is expected to carry us through the middle of next week. There’s still about a 30% showers each day, though. Why is that important? Mindy and I have a campsite reserved at Alum Creek for next Wednesday and Thursday night. We’re hoping for dry weather through our stay. Our plan calls for us to be completely rigged and ready come 5pm Wednesday putting us there no later than 6:30pm. We’ll stay until mid-afternoon Friday. I need to remember to ask my Dad if he’ll tend to Ykraps twice on Thursday and once Friday morning. I had my coffee in total peace and even got in a morning meditation. I would’ve preferred to do it on the deck but the wet conditions prevented that. Due to all the rain, the grass is still abundantly green and lush. I’ll very likely need to cut it tonight provided it dries out a little through the day. I didn’t need to make a lunch so I got back most of the time I spent oversleeping. I enjoyed my breakfast at the PC and read the Daily OM, which I haven’t done in the morning for a few weeks. I also sent Mindy and email. She said that she misses getting those from me each morning. After breakfast I made Mindy a cup of coffee for her bedside while I took my morning shower. Unlike most days this week, no one was up and stirring, not even a mouse! I was ready to go by 7:35am. I chose to forego playing guitar so I was essentially right on schedule. I left the house for work at 7:40am. I arrived to work right on time, just as expected. The day began somewhat innocently but things picked up rather quickly. We had a 10:00am staff meeting that lasted just over an hour. I was back at my desk hungry for my morning snack by 11:10am. I worked diligently right up until 1pm when I left for my run. I wasn’t sure of the weather but could see that the sky was brightening yet still cloudy. I ran without a shirt and it’s a good thing. It was close out there. Closer than I had imagined! I was dripping with sweat after one short mile. It didn’t help that my legs were a tad stiff, too. Needless to say, I overcame the minor obstacles and finished my five miles just like any other day. I was back at my desk by 2pm with my day-old lunch in tow. Regardless of its age, it sure tasted good. The afternoon brought with it plenty of activity. I was busy handling a number of escalations that took right up until just after 5pm to get under control. But as sure as it’s Thursday, I was eager to get home and relax a little. I could see from our east parking lot that 270 south bound was at a stand still. I took note and decided I’d take Davidson Rd to Old Dublin Rd home – completely bypassing the freeway. That’s a much more scenic route anyhow. The drive down Old Dublin Rd was as much a smart one as it was a pleasing one. I didn’t hit any traffic until I got to the 90 degree curve into Scioto Darby Rd. That ended up begin about a ten minute back-up. I got home at 5:37pm. As It turned in my drive, it looked like Mindy’s van turning out of the subdivision just ahead. I would later learn that it was. I was nice coming home to a quiet, clean, and empty home. I proceeded to complete my ritualistic chores then excitably grabbed my book and collapsed in my chair to attempt to sneak in a nap. I had no idea where Mindy & the kids were headed and when they might return, but was content on napping just the same. I read about four pages before my eyes got so heavy that I couldn’t stand it any longer. I closed my eyes to remedy that overwhelming feeling. Just as I did, the door popped open and I was jolted awake from my mini-nap. That made me grumpy. My plans of doing the lawn work were dashed by a few passing showers, so I decided I’d place a second and final coat of white paint on the inside drywall around my deck door. For whatever reason, the first coat dried somewhat yellower than the original. I wasn’t sure if the rust that had fallen into the can had altered the color slightly or if it was due to the age of the paint. Meanwhile, Mindy whipped up some food for all of us. She had stopped at Wal-Mart to pick up a few things and bought these designer brats (not Johnsonville) for the two of us. They looked artificial. As I finished up the painting, the kids enjoyed their macaroni. But they were noticeably needy tonight. Simultaneously, they were constantly requesting something from their mother. And truth be told, it wore on me like cheap pair of boxers with scratchy seams and a stiff tag. It probably had more to do with me being grumpy and tired, but they were definitely acting needier than usual – “I want, I need”. Add to that, Mindy seemed exhausted too. I could tell. We decided to microwave the designer brats in lieu of grilling them. They were already fully cooked. They didn’t look all that pleasing. In fact, they looked even more artificial after they were nuked. I proceeded to try them anyhow. I am not sure, but I think I just ate “model home food”. Those could not be real food! They were bad!!!! I did like the broccoli and cheese she made as a side. To complement the veggies, I nuked a couple of normal hot dogs. Suddenly, ‘real’ hot dogs seemed like a delicacy. :) The kids continued their needy ways all through dinner. Sometimes the act of trying to please the unappeasable is trying on ones patience. But again, they weren’t bad, just whiny and needy. As we cleaned up the dinner dishes, I pulled some old pancakes out of the fridge. In turn, the kids got their momma to take them to the bridge to feed them to the ducks. In the meantime, I put the finishing touches on kitchen clean-up. A couple minutes later I joined them at the bridge with my camera. I was sure there’d be a Kodak moment somewhere there. Mindy informed me that just before I arrived, Jacob had managed to toss the entire container of leftover pancakes into the water. Mindy went in after them. It was official, regardless of what we did, the children were going to be a challenge this evening. We spent just a few minutes out there feeding the ducks pancakes. In the end, they (the ducks) didn’t seem to care for the pancakes, by the way. Back in the house, Mindy whisked the kids upstairs for their bath. I tried to update my blog and download the pictures I had just taken. But before I could finish, the kids requested my presence to read a bedtime story. I read them about half of an interactive Peter Pan book that challenged their counting and awareness skills. After tucking them in bed, they continued with their whiny, needy requests. I went back down stairs and Mindy soon followed. She addresses their needs and got them to settle down a little. Tonight, I would break with my “no alcohol on a school night” rule. Oh yes! When Mindy came downstairs, she poured herself a glass of wine. I made myself a Raspberry Vodka and Black Cherry Fresca drink. I added just a hint of Raspberry schnapps and a pink straw to give it a slightly pink hue. It was enough to take the edge off of what seemed a stressful evening. We spent about thirty minutes on the deck talking as the sunset. It was ultra humid for all the rain the past few days. Bella was still awake and continuously peeking out the window and waving. Their needy ways continued until we went to bed. When Mindy and I went inside, I checked my blood pressure. To my surprise, it was low. It was only 115/67 – pulse 59 (high for me). We laughed it off. As we headed upstairs for bed, the kids, both of them, beckoned their mother one more time. I had to chuckle a bit as Mindy finally turned to Bella and told her to get back in bed and closed our bedroom door.
