It Could Be Worse
Sunday’s mixed bag gave way to a much brighter more delightful Monday morning. I woke around 5:45am after about 6.75hrs sleep. I wanted more but knew I had to get up & get going.
I was somewhat sad that the weekend was over and that it was time to return to work. It hardly seemed possible. The weekend flew by. But the next weekend can’t take shape until we go back to work, unless, of course, you happen to be a school teacher on summer break.
After tucking my feet under the sofa I whipped out my exercise routine. Soon I could feel the endorphins flowing. Oops, I had somehow forgotten to make coffee the night before. Crap! Oh well, I had ¾’s of a pot left from the day before. I decided that I’d just heat those remains in the microwave & grin and bear it.
I proceeded with my morning routine as always. After strumming a few chords on my guitar, I was out the door and headed for work by 7:35am.
Work was work, and it was a Monday. Expecting it to be mellow would have been a mistake. Monday’s are always action packed. I almost drove the BM’er but didn’t and it’s a good thing. Safelite Auto Glass was to come out again today to fix my windshield properly. They had promised between noon and 2pm. My instincts drove me to call to them to ensure they were on track. I fought against the urge, however. I would instead allow them to keep their word without me needling them.
As the day wore on, things were like most Monday’s. Come 1pm no word from Safelite. I wanted to do my run so I gave them a call. In true shitty service fashion, they gave me some song and dance about not having the parts – sorry. Hold the phone!!! I need to speak with your manager’s manager – NOW! After about five minutes I was transferred to the old Service Manager who’s since been promoted ( I had his name from three years ago). After sharing my story, he apologized and ensured me that the manager himself would in fact be out this afternoon to rectify the windshield, even if they didn’t have the trim pieces they had lost last week. That sounded reasonable. He said it would be a little while and doubted he could possibly be there before 2pm however. I understood that too given the late hour. I told him I was going to lunch and would be back soon.
OK, off to the gym. After opening my gym bag I realized that this Monday was nothing but a continuation of last. It seems I forgot my running shoes. I thought for a second about running in my bare feet. I’ve actually done that before. Next, I considered running in the shoes I’d worn to work, but of all my shoes, I had worn my Bostonian’s. Finally, I decided I had no choice but to drive home and retrieve them. Actually, I figure I’d just run form home then return. Still, I was tormented with the possibility of Safelite showing up while I was gone, and blowing me off for who knows how much longer. Needless to say, I was frustrated!
While driving home I decided I’d be best off grabbing my shoes and returning to work. But even still, I didn’t know if they’d show while I was running and not work if I wasn’t there to greet him. So, I continued to stew!
Back at the office (still no call) I proceeded directly to the fitness center. Just as I finished dressing John called and said he was out at my truck. I quickly ran out to greet and get him started. He assured me that he could correct Justin’s screw up. I left feeling confident that he would do just that.
As I ran the stress began to subside. I felt so much better as thins were falling into place. Upon my return and after my shower I went out to see how he was doing. He was just finishing up. By the looks of the work and by his own word, the job was done and done right – minus to two missing trim pieces, which he promised he would personally deliver and install once they’re in. Finally! As luck would have it, John told me that the Trooper is one of the toughest windshields to replace.
Upon closer observation, he replaced the windshield with yet another new one. Counting all the screw ups, this is the seventh windshield that’s been in my Trooper – no kidding!
Can we move on to something else – PLEASE!
At home for the day I found Mindy already at my place. It’s no wonder, though. I had to stop at Home Depot to pick-up toilet parts since my first floor guest bath toilet was spouting water onto the floor from the valve. I had to shut it off temporarily on Sunday to prevent further problems. The kid’s bathroom upstairs has the exact same parts and is twelve years old too, so I bought two kits. Smart!
My first glance out the kitchen window was like a punch to the gut. The beautiful hanging basket of petunias was looking wilted and dry. Are you frikin’ kidding me? How could this be? We had nothing but steady rain, and even though I know and preach that these need watered everyday - even during rainy days, I couldn’t believe it had dried. And perhaps even more disturbing was that I allowed it to happen while knowing better. What is coming over me? I need a vacation!
In disgust, I went immediately outside to water it in hopes of reviving it. I pride myself on keeping these things looking beautiful all summer long and have with few exceptions for years on end. Here, we’re just a few weeks into the season and I nearly killed one already. Damn! After a objective view I realized that it wasn’t dead, but only dry and approaching that state.
A good thorough soaking should snap it right back. I watered the entire backyard display while out there.
In the meantime, Mindy was prepping our dinner. She was pre-boiling hot Italian sausages and making a garden salad as well as green beans. After the watering, I fired up the grill. Despite the day’s seeming resistance to my happiness, it was a very lovely evening – sunny - not too hot – not too cool. We ate our summery dinner on the deck. It was yummy!
Mindy had to go come 8:38pm. She was actually a little late. We spent the last half hour/hour talking about how to transition the new Honda to Lindsey.
After Mindy left I went into plumber mode almost immediately. With little to no trouble, I replaced the old toilet valve. I couldn’t replace the worn flapper since the old intake has a certain type of appendage that would interfere with the new one. If that becomes and issue, I’ll have to replace the entire intake tube which requires complete tank removal. I’ve done it before however. When I finished I determined it was too late to do the other upstairs. I’d do it tomorrow I thought.
After taking off the plumber’s hat, I sat down to blog and surf. That I did until my bed time. Before drifting off to sleep I did some reading. I was asleep by 11pm
