M.E.T.
It’s Friday and my body, mind, and soul are collectively prepared and ready for a weekend. My right foot hit the floor at about 5:45am – a tad later than I’d hoped for, but then again, I did stay up late last night.
I approached my morning routine with the determination of an ant. And, yes, ants are determined! My thoughts this morning turned to Mindy as this is her first full day as Mindy Elaine Thompson in a number of years. To celebrate this event, she’s planning a party at her home for this evening. She’s invited many of her long time friends, family, and co-workers, along with some of our new shared friends.
The morning proceeded as planned with nothing out of the ordinary occurring. The weather was pretty darn chilly and the skies cloud covered. The prognosis for the entire day was cold and cloudy, and we weren’t expecting to break freezing all day – a rare occurrence in Columbus this winter.
At work I held my breath as I often do on Friday mornings. Sometimes, if it’s even imaginable, I wish it weren’t Friday because the workload can be overwhelming. It’s just the nature of our business. But happily, while we remained steadily busy, it never got too out of hand. Come 12:15pm I sent myself to the gym to ready for my run. I dressed in my usual three winter layers to combat the chill. There was a light breeze blowing out of the north/northwest that factored minimally into my run, although I could tell the difference when it was in my favor rather than in my face. Again today I enjoyed the sounds of the daily special on WOSU-FM. Soothing! Today featured several works from Heiden.
My afternoon was just as you’ve come to expect me to say, busy yet manageable! Come 5:00pm I ended my day and left the building. In route to home I stopped at Kroger to pick-up a few things I’d need for the coming week and some beer for Mindy’s party. Despite the stop, I still made it home before 5:40pm. I had a lot I wanted to accomplish chore wise prior to heading to Mindy’s. But as I often do when my mind is going so fast, I had a little trouble getting started. Thinking that a fresh perspective would help, the first thing I did after my immediate chores (walking Ykraps) was cuddle in my over stuffed reading chair with my book with the intention of reading and napping. Read I did as well as stealing a few winks. I think I slept for about half an hour. I woke feeling refreshed but still was slow getting my tasks accomplished. I vacuumed, watered plants, cleaned my tile floor, and started some laundry. The house looked pretty good by the time I was done. I had told Mindy I’d be there around 8pm. It was now about 7:45pm.
After changing clothes and gathering my gear for a night away, I called and ordered some Minelli’s pizzas for pick-up. Ten minutes later I was out the door and soon I was at Minelli’s. Unfortunately my order was misinterpreted to be for two larges versus two x-larges, so in lieu of starting over they offered to throw in an additional medium pie for the same price. And since Mindy’s kids prefer plain cheese pizza, I requested just that - cheese! It took only an additional ten minutes to have then all ready. It was now 8:20pm. I was finally on my way to Mindy’s.
Mindy’s party had really just got going. The three pizzas I showed with seemed to be just what the doctor ordered, despite Mindy having a spread of tasty snack food. And while her siblings were noticeably missing, many of her friends showed for the event. Only one of my friends showed, Bill Gray. What’s funny, Mindy’s kids were watching Stuart Little, which I’ve watched with them probably ten times if not more. Bill had never seen it. He quickly pointed out that the father of Stuart Little was also Dr Gregory House in the Fox hit series, House. And while Mindy and I don’t watch hardly any television, we have taken a liking to that particular show and found it humorous to contrast him in those two disparate roles. His real name is Hugh Laurie and is quite an accomplished actor/director, especially in England. Cool!
The party wrapped up around 11:30pm, and the clean-up after midnight. And as much as we were looking forward to the alone time, we were both exhausted for being up since 5:30am. Consequently, we fell asleep shortly thereafter.
