A Craving for Summer
I woke up Saturday morning sometime shortly after 8am. I was still a little tired but it was the weekend and we had tentative plans early. An eye to the window revealed a moderate amount of sunshine to start the day. That was more than enough to get me going.
After whipping out my exercises, I logged onto my laptop to check in with work since I was the manager on-call. I had a few tasks I needed to address, I could see. Shortly after, I dawned my coat and leashed up Ykraps for our Saturday morning walk through Scioto Woods. Unfortunately, the sunshine didn’t even last my walk with Ykraps. I could see the cloudless morning departing in the eastern sky and thin gray clouds on westward. I should’ve gotten up earlier. :(
At home I poured my first cup of coffee sometime around 8:40am and spent the next hour working. In the meantime I checked the weather radar only to learn that quite a bit of rain was heading our way. That pretty much thwarted our plans to head to Hocking Hills. Mindy arrived shortly after 915am. We were spending the rest of the weekend together. Even though our plans for hiking were dashed, we were still determined to have some fun regardless of what we did.
I hadn’t been able just yet to give Mindy any undivided attention, and I hadn’t gotten my run in yet either. I dawned my running gear then took to the streets. Mindy decided to snuggle up with a book in my absence. I was back by 11am. While she checked her email and stuff, I began prepping some food. I made sausage and scrambled eggs. As I cooked I made my grocery list in hopes that I might be able to sneak away. After breakfast I began mixing in my routine chores since the day outdoors was a washout. I cleaned out my fridge, finished some laundry, and vacuumed the downstairs. Come mid-afternoon I gave neighbor Pat Schultz a call to check on he and his wife’s plans for the night. We had talked a few days prior about going out tonight. As it turned out, they were free, so we nailed down plans to hook up later in the evening. We didn’t, however, firm up a venue or game plan. Instead, I worked on that loosely over the course of the next few hours.
Mindy took a nap during the late afternoon. I got in some much deserved and desired reading. I even stole a few winks myself. When Mindy woke she urged me to come upstairs where we napped together for the next hour and a half. When I woke I took Ykraps on yet another walk. The afternoon sky began to clear a little and spring was definitely in the air. It was beautiful!
Come 6:15 we were done showering and ready for a night on the town with the Shultz’s. A call to Pat confirmed their arrival to be 7pm-ish. We were still, however, unclear where we would be going. While waiting, I poured myself a beer. I had been craving a Honey Raspberry Ale, but since they’ve stopped selling it within my region I had no choice but to make my own. I took a Snow Cap Ale (brewed and bottled in Seattle) and added a touch of Raspberry Schnapps. The Snow Cap is a dark Ale with lots of body. The slight hint of raspberry was ideal! I liked it.
I poured Mindy a glass of wine. The Schultz’s arrived around 7:15pm. They only live around the corner so they had walked over. I made each of them a drink. Lisa had a rum and coke. Pat had a couple of Bud Light’s. After some conversation and reaching the bottom of our drink glasses, we all loaded up in the Trooper for a night on the town.
After filling my tank just down the street we headed for the short north. We parked in the North Market parking lot for $5. Still, we weren’t certain where our destination would be. As we walked onto high street we immediately decided on Abracci’s Steak’s & Italian.
We were seated almost immediately despite not having reservations. When they asked if I/we had reservations I told them “not really, other than that I hadn’t eaten there before”. :)
We were seated in a comfortable booth. Mindy ordered water, I ordered a CPA (Columbus Pale Ale). I’m not certain what Pat and Lisa had. Not true. Come to think of it, Pat ordered a Lite. Looking around, it was apparent that we were in the short north. The restaurant was loaded with lots of local art. The couple pieces that caught my eye were borrowed pieces from the gallery next door, Elements.
For an appetizer I ordered calamari which came sautéed and served with a delicious dipping sauce. It was good! For our entrée’s, Mindy ordered Sea Bass, and I ordered a 14 ounce NY Strip. I can’t recall what Pat and Lisa ordered. I do know that they had salads though.
Everything was tasty – the bread, the appetizer, the steak. And the fact that they serve Columbus Pale Ale was icing on the cake. For what it’s worth, I give Abracci’s a double thumbs up!
After our meal we ventured down High street on foot towards Barley’s Ale House. It was packed. We opted instead to check out Novak’s (right next door). It was crowded too but we stayed. Pat grabbed us drinks form the bar after which we meandered toward the back of the bar where we found a stair case leading up onto the roof complete with tables and fresh air. The night air was chilly but bearable especially given the crowded stuffiness of the main bar. We sat up there for about 15 minutes chatting about this and that. The girls were getting cold so we went back in. At the foot of the stairs was a huge leather couch. We hung there until we were ready to leave. It was comfy. I’d guess we stayed there for another fifteen minutes or so. We did manage to meet some strangers who were celebrating a 30th birthday. For some reason, pat told them I was from Canada. They bought it and were asking me all sorts of questions about my thoughts of their city. Somewhere along the line someone – can’t remember who – gave me up. It was funny. Now he didn’t know what to believe.
Soon we were done. We headed to our car making enemies on the way out by snapping pictures of some unsuspecting patrons. They threw a little hissy fit until Pat put them in their place. Back at my house we had another round of drinks. To add to the fun, I made the Princess and I some buttery nipples (Bailey's and Butterscotch Schnapps). We had three each. They go down easy and honestly, they're not that strong. After some fun story telling pat & Lisa called it a night. It must have been between 12:30 and 1am when they left. Mindy and I headed to bed too, but not before I popped a couple Advil and a Tagament for good measure.
