Hap Hap Happy in Holiday Valley - Ski Day #2 (New Year's Eve)

Like clockwork, I was up and out of bed by 640pm and quickly dressed in my running clothes. This time it was a little snowier as well as a little colder. The early temp was a cold 10 degrees. I sucked down a quick cup of coffee in the lobby before heading out. It was cold, windy and a little slick. Walks were scraped again, too. Another nice run into town. On the return I pondered the year about to expire.

Back at the Inn I poured two coffees then headed back to the room. Mindy and Bella were soon up and the three of us off to breakfast. Once again, Jacob opted to sleep in. Instead of French toast, this time they had Belgium waffles. Everything else was pretty much the same. Knowing I'd burn it off in a hurry, I loaded up on the sausage. We shared out table with another family. Bella made sure to grab some extra muffins to take back for Jacob.

Back to the room by 845am, we readied for another day on the slopes. This time all four of us headed out together. We were on our way up Sunrise near 940am. Not bad. This time the runs were covered in a fresh couple inches of groomed powder, though there were still a few icy spots here and there. Snowed pretty hard all day and at times so hard that it was a complete white out. Still had snow makers blowing on several of the runs too. By lunch time, the runs were slopped up with a heavy dose of fresh powder. I was lovin' it.

We took a long lunch break in the Yodeler lodge. During our break, I taught Jacob how to play penny basketball. He was loving it. We had a lot of fun. I sucked down a S.T. IPA too. Mindy stuck with water and Gatorade. Said she felt dehydrated. We skied Eagle and Falcon. Falcon was by far the most challenging. Even with all the falling snow the face was still icy. On the front side, Champagne was about as tamed as it has ever been - easy. However, it doesn't take too long for it to get moguled up.

Late in the afternoon, Mindy and I skied Mardi Gras while the kids took Northwind. Well, Mindy stopped to help a fallen child, and I stopped to wait for Mindy. We were supposed to meet the kids at Cindy's. Even after taking a while to get to the bottom, there was no sign of the kids. Mindy and I both were worried that something might have happened to one of them. And then were more than a little spooked when the emergency snow mobile headed up Mardi Gras with the red beacon twirling. I agreed to head up Mardi Gras and ski back down Northwind looking for the two of them while Mindy stayed put. In the back of my mind I wondered if they simply might've ventured up the Cindy's lift without us.

I skied an otherwise empty Northwind. A very nice cruiser, especially with all the fresh snow and nobody else on it. No sign of the kids, which to me was a very good sign. At the bottom I found Jacob alone. Said he and Bella went up Cindy's because we told them to meet us there. Ughhhh, we meant at the base. Not sure what happened to Bella, but now those two were separated. Mindy was on her way up Cindy's to find her. Finally, after two runs, we were all back together again. I laughed it off as a simple misunderstanding.

Headed back to the room near 445pm. Once again the ski day got the best of us even though we didn't ski nearly as many runs as we had the day prior. And like the day before, Mindy and I were quickly out of our ski clothes and off to the hot tub with our cooler in tow. We me more nice folks while enjoying our beer and wine. It was snowing so hard and so cold that snow was accumulating on our heads. I'll bet that we were in the hot tub for well over an hour. And before heading back to the room, we spent about five minutes in the sauna.

We hadn't nailed down our New Year's Eve dinner plans. We talked about getting a take-out pizza from the Depot, but in the end decided to eat at the restaurant. By the time we were showered, dressed and there, it was 7pm or so.

We anticipated a long wait, but were pleasantly surprised to get a table as soon as we walked in. Our server was awesome. I ordered a S.T. IPA. No sense messing with what works! For appetizers, we ordered friend pickles and something else. Can't recall what it was. For dinner, Jacob and Bella wanted pizza. Mindy and I ordered wings and onion rings. I drank a second IPA too. After drinking two beers and eating dinner, I knew there wasn't anyway I was going to see midnight, the fireworks or the torch parade. I wanted nothing more than my pillow and it was only 9pm.

The kids and Mindy bet that I would be the first one out. In reality, though, it was Mindy. And because Mindy rolled over and fell asleep, I decided not to fight it any longer either and joined in her slumber. I remember waking just before midnight hearing the fireworks and seeing Mindy up in bed texting on her phone. Bella was out on the balcony watching the fireworks with our neighbors. Heard her wishing the others a Happy New Year. Cute! I was a little sad that I slept through the event but too tired to change it. In the end, however, it was probably best. Meant I'd be rearing to go come morning. As an old friend used to say, Partying hard on New Year's Eve is for rookies.

Good night and goodbye 2013!

Hap Hap Happy in Holiday Valley - Ski Day #1

I woke a time or two during the overnight and even once considered getting up and heading to the Inn lobby. Glad I didn't. Instead, I fell back asleep and didn't get up again until 640am. Eager to run and ski, I quickly dressed for my run. Having done this a time or two, I had my running clothes in a single pile in the closet where i could grab 'em and slip into the bathroom for a quick change with minimal interruption to the others. I was out of the room by 655am and in the lobby enjoying a small cup of Starbucks before heading out for a run.

And yes, it snowed overnight, and in fact it was still snowing, but at the time only about inch of new accumulation. It was cold, too, only 12 degrees. Expecting a high of only 19 or 20. I ran my usual route into town. And like many snow days the past couple years, they had the sidewalks plowed clean. Sweet! I love Ellicottville. Does my heart good to run Jefferson Ave. Feel right at home. Noticed a sign now posted at the old cemetery sharing that it's on the national registry of historical places. Burials there dating back to 1817, many of whom were born prior to our independence in 1776. Something to ponder as one takes in the landmark.

The run went well. Wished some locals shoveling their drives a happy new year. As fun as my run was, I was happy to be back at the Inn for more coffee and ultimately breakfast. I prepared two cups of Starbuck then headed back to the room. Mindy was already up and getting ready for breakfast and skiing. That made me happy. Both kids wanted to sleep. Jacob, I wasn't surprised, but Bella? Odd, she usually looks very forward to breakfast at the Inn. However, that said, she hardly got a wink of sleep Saturday night in anticipation of our ski trip.

Mindy and I headed to breakfast together. French toast and sausage were the two main offerings. Of course they had all the accoutrements too. Before heading back to the room, Mindy headed to the lobby to get our lift tickets. I headed back to the room and to unload our skis from the Thule. That went pretty easily. Back in the room Mindy shared that her credit cards were denied. We both expected it due to the data breach but later learned it was something much more benign - she hadn't activated them properly. Rarely uses them.

Both kids wanted to sleep in even longer. Mindy, on the other hand, was eager to ski. She and I headed out after asking the kids to text once they were up and ready. We were at the Sunrise lift by 905am - probably the earliest we've been at the lifts in several trips to HV. The runs were groomed best they could but more ice than soft snow. In fact, as Mindy put it, the conditions were ice with a dusting of snow. To be fair, some more so than others. Sunrise and Cindy's were especially icy. Mardi Gras, Champagne, Morning Star and others were decent. Snow makers blowing everywhere. HV doesn't miss an opportunity to make snow, even when they're in the midst of a winter storm, just as we were on the leading edge of at the time.

We skid together for about 90 minutes before heading in the Yodeler lodge for a break. It was only 1045am and I was ordering a Southern Tier IPA - Horrah! We shared a bowl of chili in a bread bowl too. Can't remember if Mindy had a beer too, but think she did. Around 1115am the kids sent a text sharing that they were in fact ready to come ski. Wanted us to come get 'em. No problem. We skied back across the resort to the Inn and went to the room where they were dressed in their gear and ready.

Skied all day. Snowed all day. A winter wonderland indeed. Around 2pm we took a break at the T-bar on the 3rd floor of the HV lodge. Love that place. Ordered another S.T. IPA. Yum! We ordered food, again, too. Can't remember exactly what but it was good. Not sure if I had one or two beers.

Skied all afternoon until about 430pm. I was a little disappointed when everybody said they were done for the day. Meh! Better to start fresh again the following day, I guess. My plan was to get out of the ski clothes and then head directly to the hot tub. The kids suggested dinner first. Holy crap! I wasn't even hungry. Mindy agreed with me. If we did it the other way, good chance we'd never have made it to the hot tub. It was just Mindy, Bella, and me. Jacob never wants to hot tub. In fact, he's really good and NOT doing the family things with us. Sad!

We enjoyed our time in the hot tub and like always, met a few interesting people. Sure, the hot tub was packed but emptied in a hurry. I took our cooler, a bottle of wine, and a jug of Barley's St Nick's Xmas ale. We had our plastic hot tub tumblers too. Bella swam while we hot tubbed. She loves the outdoor/indoor heated pool. I met she and Mindy in the sauna for a brief bit before we headed back to the room. Our plan was to do dinner at Cadillac Jack's.
A shower felt terrific. I needed one badly having not had one since early Sunday AM before leaving home. Headed to Cadillac Jack's near 7pm. Not too impressed with their beer menu, I opted for orange soda. I didn't need the alcohol anyway. Drank enough beer earlier while on the slopes and in the hot tub. Was really bummed that they were out of steamed mussels. Dang it!

Again, can't recall for certain what I ate, but remember it being good. Think I had a bowl of lobster bisque. We were there for about an hour. We walked back to the Inn, which is directly across the street. By then it was feeling really cold, the temperature a chilly10 degrees. Back in the room I poured a Jack & Coke but couldn't finish it. I was bloated and full. Once again, I was sound asleep somewhere between 9-930pm.

Hap, Hap, Happy in Holiday Valley - Rain on Arrival but Big Snow Comin'

My goal was to be up by 630am and then all of us on the road by 9am. However, my timeline was based on the notion that we would be skiing by 4pm after checking in our room. But the HV forecast was calling for rain through 9pm that night but then changing to snow during the overnight. Skiing Sunday, it seemed was out of the question. After thinking it through, I decided to stay on course and move forward with the original plan despite the somewhat disappointing forecast.

I enjoyed coffee and just a little internet before setting out on a run. I also took Mindy a cup of coffee. I checked on Bella, too. She was already up, wide-eyed and dressed. In fact, when I heard a noise middle of the night, I checked on her then, too. It was around 430am. She was up watching TV and playing in her room. She was stoked!

As luck would have it, it was raining lightly here in town too. My Sunday run would be in the rain, which isn't that big of deal, but instead just a minor hindrance. I ran three miles in my back-up running shoes so to keep my newest running shoes dry. Worked out pretty well all things considered. Didn't step in any big puddles.

Back at home Mindy was already out of the shower. I was most pleased to discover that. By then it was nearing 8am. I put everything for our trip by the front door before heading up for a shower. I was ready to go by 815am and so was Mindy. All we really had to do was load the Pilot and get the kids moving. As for Bella, that wasn't an issue at all. She was up and ready. Stoked, even! Jacob was still a little groggy and cranky. He refused to eat anything too which makes things even worse. Mindy insisted he help me load the Pilot.

We couldn't have timed the loading any worse - pouring rain. It was coming down at a decent clip. I was good n' soaked by the time it was all said and done. Managed to get everything in while still maintaining a view out the back. We toyed with the idea of a stop at First Watch and then driving straight in. But the kids couldn't agree, so I made a parental decision. We would eat breakfast at home and then stop for Lunch off 271 like many other times. Jacob still refused to eat eggs and brisket. Boy was it good!

All in all, I was pleased with our departure. We were on the road by 910am. We got to the end of our street when Mindy panicked and said she forgot her phone. We turned around and headed back only to find it in her jacket pocket. ::) We didn't get another 1/32 mile down the road before Jacob through a hissy fit with the new iPhone car charger I bought him for Xmas. He couldn't get it to work in the rear 12v outlet and rather than ask for help he threw in on the floor and called in junk. Yes, that pissed me off. I gave him an earful for being disrespectful and seemingly unappreciative. I asked Mindy to get it from him and prove that it worked up front. Sure enough. Operator error. Worked fine.

On the road. It rained fairly hard all the way around 270 and up 71 to 271. The rain finally slowed to a sprinkle near Canton. According to the radar, Mindy predicted we'd hit it again, however before leaving Ohio. With the new 70 mph speed limit on most of 71N, we made excellent time .I made it a point not to gander at the odometer even once until we arrived at our lunch destination - the Macedonia Wendy's as promised. Jacob was the only one that wanted food. Mindy and I each got a cup of coffee. I was still full from our brisket omelet.

The entrance back onto 217 N was closed so we had to back track a little. Not too big a deal. Just a mile or two out of our way. Soon we were back on the road for HV. Like most other HV trips, the rest of the drive ( 190 miles) goes pretty fast. That's probably due to the fact that it's broken down into much smaller segments (271- about 20 miles, I-90 through Ohio - about 80 miles, 30 more miles to Erie, 5 miles to I-86, 25 miles to Lake Chautauqua, 40 miles to Salamanca Casino, HV). For the first time ever, we stopped at the rest area that overlooks Lake Chautauqua just east of Jamestown. Despite the ugly weather (37 rain) it is stunningly beautiful. Are a quick pee we were back on the road for the last leg of our trip. We made it to HV just ahead of 3pm and were actually in our room by 307pm. For the first time ever, we had a room that wasn't liftview. I was a tad bummed but as it turned out, it was too big a deal at all. Not much further to walk to the lift - just across the small parking lot.

Lots of people skiing despite the rain. We, however, opted not do any evening skiing. Why get our gear all wet, especially when it was forecasted to snow starting later that night and then be cold and snowy for the rest of the week. Instead, we relaxed in the room watching NFL football and napping. Made plans to do dinner at EBC, one of our favorite places in Ellicottville. Must've been near 7pm when we headed there. As expected, parking was at a premium, but we found a spot in a little known ancillary lot back behind the place. The kids whined when they told Mindy it might be 1-1.5 hours. Instead of handing out pagers, they send a text now. Cool. We bellied up to the bar to have a beer. If I have one complaint about EBC, it's the arrogance of the bartenders. More often than not they walk by you many times before offering help, and even when they're seemingly not busy. Yes, it irritates me.

As I expected, we were texted for our table just shy of waiting 40 minutes. And to soothe the kids wait, Mindy gave them a little cash so they could run down to the local Ellicottville Chocolatier for some candy. They returned happy.
Sat in the new indoor section. Nice! Ordered a 2nd beer - an Obsession IPA. Decent. The bartender comp'd us a couple of their ever-popular blueberry pales. Not sure why it's so popular.

I ordered a burger while Jacob went with their brisket. Mindy and Bella each had steak, I think. Our meal was even better than I expected. Plan to go back with David & Anita later in the week - probably New Year's Night. Headed back to the Inn near 9pm where I was quickly in bed and asleep. Skiing in the morning!!

Family Night @ 229

Up near 7am. Rather warm - a balmy 35 degrees. Made coffee and then enjoyed a little PC time. Spent time editing Xmas pics and editing my HV pack list. Headed out for a run around 930am. Ran three miles. Easy - nice weather.
Wore back-up running gear so not to dirty my better stuff. It was already cleaned and ready for packing.

Checked online banking. Saw where the fraudulent purchase finally posted to my account. As my bank suggested, tried using the online site to file the necessary paperwork but found it ridiculous to follow. Instead, I picked up the phone and called the fraud department again. This time I was on hold for 40 minutes. I kept a timer and record of everything they said. I was passed around to two folks after finding the first persons answer unacceptable. Bottom line, I was insistent that they put the near $400 back in my account immediately. But they insisted that they needed to follow federal protocol and do an investigation. Assured me that it looked good though. We ended the call after about an hour with me still unsatisfied but more educated on the procedure. Good thing I have other cards is all I can say. Enough about that.

Finished my packing throughout the day, and Bella helped me load all the skis into the Thule. Mindy and the kids left to run Eiknarf to Gloria's place midafternoon. Eiknarf seems to sense when she's going on a road trip. She was giddy with excitement when they left. I spent most of the afternoon further refining my pack list making sure I wasn't forgetting something I would later regret. To aid in that process, I build my packing list off of a recent pack list to a similar destination. It's cool looking back and seeing the technological changes. No longer do I need to take DVDs/CDs etc. Didn't plan to take a laptop either. Instead, taking my Kindle HD.

We planned to do dinner as a family as 229. I was pleasantly surprised that both kids were at least somewhat looking forward to it. I think we headed out near 6pm. Wanted to get out early and then back home. Got a parking spot at a meter along Bicentennial Park. Snapped a number of photos of the Xmas lights on the walk to 229. Very nice.

Took us immediately to a table. Keagen was our server. I ordered a Bell's Kalamazoo stout - just one. Mindy went with wine. And just like the time before, we ordered pretzel bread and pork bellies as appetizers. I think Mindy ordered a steak. Jacob and I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with vinegar fries. And I think Bella went with steak too. Dinner was good, but I could eat only half of my sandwich. Took the rest home.

Bella asked if she could go down to the neighbors once we arrived home. No big surprise there. She wasn't down there long, however. Apparently something got broke and she quickly came home. I was eager to get into my PJs and get some much needed rest ahead of our big drive on Sunday. I was tired and thought I was going to fall asleep early but once in bed I simply couldn't sleep. In fact, I ended up getting back up and out of bed and going downstairs to play on my computer. Was up until almost 1am. Oh boy! Guess it was nervous energy.

Hip-Hip Hooray for Xmas Vacation - a Double Xmas Ale

Last work day prior to my Xmas vacation

Up around 645am, I was quickly exercised and at my desk with coffee.

Seasonably warm - 34 degrees with an expected high near 45 later in that afternoon.

Headed out for a run around 845am. Ran just three miles. Easy run.

Jacob had 3 overnight guests - all were picked up by parents by 11am.

Mindy was off running errands by then. I think Joel was the last to go. His mom dropped off some baked Xmas goods. How sweet! Mindy was off to Hugh White Honda to have the oil changed, tires rotated, and have the battery checked/replaced. Ended up having it replaced without getting the official word that it was dying. But it's 5 years old and cranking a little slow on cold mornings. Mindy said she didn't want to risk it. Good call, dear!

Easy work day. Set out-of-office on both phones (desk & mobile) and email.

Planned to do dinner at Barley's.

Before that, however, Bella and I made a run to Best Buy and then Target looking for a case and keyboard for her Surface. She had $100 in gift cards from Xmas. I was surprised how expensive the compatible bluetooth keyboards are ($130). They were completely out of stock. We only bought a case. Bella asked if we could stop at Target before heading home to check there. Sure.

Low and behold, we ran into none other than Mindy & Jacob in Target. They were looking for ski mittens. We shopped together for a few minutes but then dashed off for home. Oh, they don't even carry Surface stuff. Mindy & Jacob had a couple more errands to run. Where exactly, I can't recall. We beat them home by about 30 minutes. I think perhaps they needed to stop for a prescription at CVS.

Home and ready to head to dinner at Barley's by 7pm. We must've arrived near 730pm. Bella asked if she could take her Surface. I don't think we permitted it. Sometimes you simply have to save your kids from themselves. We were seated in a booth near the bar. I enjoyed a nitro Wood Reserve Winter Ale. I knew then that it would likely be my last. Growing tired of that Xmas ale flavor.

Can't recall if we had already ordered dinner when Tom Clark came in and joined us. To my knowledge, it was by happenstance, though with Mindy you never know who she might have invited. Just sayin'. We hadn't seen Tom for a couple of months. In fact, I don't think I've seen him since I stopped by his house on a Saturday way back in early October. And while it was good to catch up, he was especially negative with his thoughts and sentiment. I think even Mindy was surprised at how gloomy he was. But honestly, it's the same Tom I've known for years. He just needs laid by a good woman is all. :)

I had just two beers, my 2nd and IPA. It was good. I'm thinking that we were home by 9pm. We tinkered with the idea of visiting the neighbors but never did. I played on the computer some then watched TV. Enjoyed another beer, too. Mindy soon headed for bed. I started getting sleepy even before i finished my beer. Ended up pouring it out and heading to bed.

Ski Night @ MRM - Data Breach

I was up and out of bed just before 8am. It was work day so I felt at least somewhat behind the eight ball. Quickly downstairs, I started coffee then calisthenics. Mom was up too, and it sounded like she was in the shower. By the time she joined me downstairs I'd already finished calisthenics and was enjoying coffee at my work station. Took Mindy some coffee around 845am, which is something she requested just before I headed downstairs earlier.

She asked that I open the front door just in case my dad came by. Sure enough, not even 3 minutes passed after I opened the front door dad walked up. We were expecting him. I offered him coffee. He accepted then prepped a cup himself. As expected, he watered it down some. Not only do I make it strong, but it was one of Starbuck's boldest roasts, too. While he and mom chit-chatted in the family room, I excused myself to my desk to continue working. Mindy was downstairs a few minutes later.

Once I had work under control, which was somewhere close to 10am, I readied and left for a run. It was 30 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Felt good. Nice three mile run. Kenny was out putting the Thule atop the Jeep. He said he was taking all the kids to MRM. I shared that Mindy talked about taking the kids up too. I went on to share that even I might head up around 4pm, or once my work day was complete.

Back at the house near 1030am, mom and dad had all their gear near the door. Apparently arrangements were made for my dad to run my mom out near Tommy's. Tommy would then take Mom to approximately Lake Logan where Ronald was supposed to meet her and then drive her the rest of the way home. While got busy with work, Jacob carried Mom's luggage to her car. What a good boy!

I stayed busy with work through rest of the morning and early afternoon. Dealt with one significant issue most of the day. At the same time, Mindy worked on laundry and putting away the Xmas clutter. Mindy shared that she was exhausted and definitely not going skiing. Said she needed a day of rest at home after a couple weeks of go, go, go leading up to Xmas. I worked hard through about 230pm. By then things got really quiet. I made plans to go skiing at MRM that evening. Sent Bob I. a text asking if he wanted to meet there. Responded that he was working until 6pm. Maybe next time.

I asked Bella if she wanted to go along. Thought for certain that she would, especially since her bff, Makayla was there. But no, she didn't want to go either. And actually, she sounded congested and sick. She lounged around the house the entire day. By the time I had a shower and was ready to go it was 320pm. Put the back seat down in the Accord to accommodate my skis. Left the house a few minutes later, just me.

Easy drive up 270 and 33. Got a call from Kenny just as I was passing through Marysville sharing that his security system company called and said there was a breach or alarm. He wanted me to check it out, but also shared that the cops were already on their way. When I shared that I was more than half way to MRM we worked out plan 'B'. I offered to call Mindy and have her casually check it out. I got a hold of Mindy who agreed to walk down and check it out. She would either call me or Kenny.

My bluetooth calling was boogered up again due to a conflict between my work and personal phones. As a consequence, I missed a callback from Mindy. Earlier, I asked that she approach Kenny's house with caution. After all, didn't want her to surprise or scare a would-be burglar. After about 5 minutes, I finally got through. Said there was a strange car with a strange man sitting in it outside of Kenny's house. She was across the street and called 911. Turns out, it was a plain clothes detective waiting for the CPD to arrive. Once the cruiser showed up, Mindy talked with them both. Apparently just a false alarm.

Arrived at MRM near 415pm. Didn't take long at all to gear up, get my lift ticket, and head up the Four Star. Did 3 or 4 runs before I spotted Kenny, though I saw Lillian and Emily on my first ride up. The snow was in decent shape though a little icy here and there. For that reason, I was a little tentative on my edges. Better to be cautious rather than overzealous.

Finally hooked up with Kenny in line. We did several runs together. Also ran into work peep, Chris and his daughter, Sydney. After another 4 or 5 runs Kenny & I headed in for a beer break, but just one for me. I can't take credit for it, but did send the GM a note suggesting that having a few good microbrews on tap would only make an already great place better. I was very pleased to find that they now have a few on tap, including an Elevator IPA and a creamy stout. Can't recall the brewer, but it was sure good. That made my day.

All the kids came inside too: Lillian. Makayla, Emily, Evan and big Jake. Good to see them all there having fun. Kenny is a good man. Kenny had a 2nd beer, I stuck with just the one. I think my stout was more potent than his Labatt. :) While enjoying my beer I received a call from my bank suggesting that my card had been compromised. Asked if I had been in Dayton and made a purchase there. No, I wasn't. He went on to ask several other questions, including a request for lots of personal info. Concerned that I could be getting duped even then, I suggested that I call my bank back myself once at home. He agreed. Shared the nature of the call with Kenny. We headed out for a few more runs. My goal was 3 or 4 more runs then head home.

Two weeks later ...

At home I called my bank. Waited on hold for at least 20 minutes. Ugh! Transferred me to the fraud department. Left me feeling like a criminal. I threatened to pull all of my money and go elsewhere should they not address the issue promptly and courteously. Bottomline, they said they couldn't do much beyond cancelling my card until the fraudulent purchase actually posted to my account (moved from pending). I found that to be B.S.

Mindy and the kids walked down to the neighbors, Kenny and Chrissy's delivering the Xmas gift basket we made for them. Not sure what we did for the remainder of the evening. Relax, I guess.

Xmas '13 - Dancin' Around the Tree

And to all, a Good Night!

Do you hear what I hear?

I woke in the middle of the night. I'm thinking that it was somewhere close to 4am. I had to pee and was really thirsty. Still feeling at bit of angst, i decided to get up and head downstairs for a while. While there, I fetched all of Mindy's gift's and placed them in close proximity to the Xmas tree and just to the left of Bella's pile. I took a couple photos too. Still not sleepy, I headed to my computer where I did some wiring in my blog. Come 540am, I was finally sleepy enough that I thought I could go right to sleep again. I headed back upstairs and crawled into bed.

This time I slept until 8am. I was still the first one up. Downstairs, I started a pot of Starbucks. Decided to skip calisthenics. I planned to run, of course, but probably not until after gift opening. Mindy was up and downstairs around 830am, and my mom not too long after that. Mindy opened the front door and soon dad was there. He must've been parked just down the street waiting for a sign that we were indeed up. :)

The kids slept in until 9-930am. Before that, we sat around enjoying coffee and chit-chat. Mindy put both breakfast casseroles in the oven - strada and French toast. They needed to bake for at least 45 minutes. Once the kids joined us downstairs, the gift opening ceremonies began. The kids opened their gifts simultaneously. Jacob opened all of his in a hurry. By far, Bella's gifts were of more substance and size, but Mindy went to great lengths to make it look even both by size and numbers. After all, one can wrap a gift card in an enormous box if one chooses. :)
Jacob got phone accessories, a basketball, and gift cards. Bella got a couple American Girl Doll accessories, a new sled, a North Face jacket, and some clothes.

Mom & Dad went next. Santa got them both chocolates and gift cards/cash. Next up .... me. Mindy insisted. She'd already bought me the drum box way back in October. She's also bought me a new ski jacket which she wrapped. Other than that, I had no idea. Got some new PJs and socks, a yoga mat and a gift certificate for 5 sessions at Grow Yoga. I also got a 4-pack of Elf pint glasses along with a ten-pack of mini Jack Daniels bottles. There might've been a couple other things, too.

Mindy was last but not least. She made out. I made sure of that. From the kids, she got a custom photo calendar and Bear Paw boots (think Ugg). In addition, she got another Pandora bracelet with four or five charms, a robe and slippers, a couple Victoria Secret "sexies" as my mom calls them, and then two photo albums stuffed full of 400 photos from 2013. Lastly, she got matching ski and boot bags.

How many times have you heard a parent say they could've simply got their kid and empty box? Well, soon after Mindy opened the large box containing her ski luggage, Bella climbed into the box to play. The breakfast casseroles were finally ready. I had a small sliver of the strada ahead of my run. I headed out for a run around 1030am. It was pretty cold - only 19 degrees under partly cloudy skies. The roads were completely dry - clear. I ran only three miles but for some reason, the run was tough. I think it was strada. Aside from an occasional half banana, I don't typically eat anything ahead of a run. Or, maybe it was the drinking each night for the last 5 or 6. Either way, it took all the energy that I could muster.

Back at the house near 11am, I could finally enjoy some of both breakfast casseroles aplenty. I had a full slice of each as well as more coffee. Despite Mindy's insistence, both Mom & Dad declined the invite to join us at Gloria's place. Instead, they planned a visit to a few cemeteries visiting dead relatives. Dad's said many times, there he can sing Xmas carols at the top of his lungs without fear of critique. Mindy shared that we were expected around 1230pm, but it was already noon, there wasn't any way we'd be leaving any sooner than about 115pm.

While Mindy was in the shower, nephew Joe and Rick stopped by. They hung with us for about an hour. I headed off for a shower around 1245pm. Mom & Dad left shortly before we pulled out for Gloria's place. Made sure Dad knew we had the security system set so he could get Mom in the house later that afternoon. Again, we offered that he could drop her off at Gloria's but she said likely not. She and Gloria have never met. Not sure why Mom's being so shy.

With us in the Pilot, we had the pug. And in tow, we had a cooler with ice, soda, two plastic cups, a flask of Jack & Capt. Morgan. Oh, we also took along a cheese & veggie tray, as well as an assortment of Xmas cookies. I really wanted to make some balls - risotto or sauerkraut, but simply ran out of time and desire. Arrived near 130pm. As usual, I walked the pug out front before heading inside. She didn't disappoint. She took a dump before we headed in. It must be the smell of strange dogs that excites her sphincter.

Xmas greetings to all. The best way to spread Xmas cheer is to singing loud for all to hear. I was definitely feelin' the Xmas spirit, though I was a tad worried I smelt of beef & cheese. Thankfully, that awkward feelin' quickly abated after pouring a festive Jack & Coke. Yum!

Once all the family members arrive, a standing Thompson Xmas tradition is to stand hand in hand around the Xmas tree, and then, once Gloria slips on some of Bing's best, and dance triumphantly around the tree until near exhaustion. Fun-fun! Then, after dancing, it's time for spiked eggnog and the reading of the night before Xmas. Once that's in the bag, it really feels like Xmas.

Snacked on appetizers through the early afternoon. The Jack & Coke did little more than make me tired. Around 4pm the gift opening ceremony began, first with the wee ones. As the Thompson grandchildren get older, their Xmas piles are shrinking. Years past, it was difficult to navigate the downstairs with piles and piles of gifts in the way. It must've been the first Xmas we shared together when we literally filled Mindy's minivan front to back with the kids' haul.

Sometimes it seems the gifting will just never end. I think it was 6pm by the time it was all said and done. Right after all that Gloria sat out more food, adding ham and lasagna to the options. Like most, I was already full from the appetizers but ate a little more anyway. I think it was 630pm when we headed upstairs to play the lottery game - nothin' says Xmas like playin' the Ohio lottery game. We had a table full, and this year we even allowed Jacob into the fray. Anyone interested in playing was responsible for bringing $5 worth of instant lottery tickets. We set the timer for 1 minute and passed the dice around the table. Doubles you take possession of the ticket in question. Once the timer expires, the person last holding the ticket keeps it. Must've been at least 12 of us playing. It gets loud and exciting. Certainly a good activity after the sedentary feeding. :) I managed to snag four tickets. And after rubbing off the tickets, I'd won $19. Hooray!! I think we spent $15 between Mindy, me, and Jacob. Fun, though.

Now after 7pm, I thought we might leave for home. I was getting really tired. Nope! Time for dessert and then pictures. Jacob and I carried most of our stuff to the Pilot before dessert. Soon after dessert, Mindy declared that we were leaving. Gloria nixed that notion suggesting instead that it was family photo time. Hey, I understood the declaration. We'd be sorry 20-30 years from now if we didn't have the memories. We removed our coats and did the Xmas family photo shoot. Next year I'll take the tripod so we can get the entire group's photo. The past couple years we've done by divisions: kids, grand kids, boys, girls. Hey, it's Gloria's Xmas. She can call it how she wants it.

On the road for home by 805pm. Not bad. I told my mom we'd most likely be home near 8pm. I think we called that one. My mom was sitting quietly on the family room sofa watching The Bible on the History Channel when we arrived home. I'm thinking she'd been there for several hours. But hey, we offered that she come with us. Once we were settled, I poured a Xmas ale from the growler sitting out back on the deck and joined Mom watching The Bible. We called brother Glenn around 830-9pm ET. He was just putting the finishing touches on Xmas dinner, just he Stephen, and one of his pals. We passed the phone around. Talked for perhaps 20 minutes in total. We'll see Glenn in February in Tahoe.

We stayed up until 10pm. Mom peeled off for bed hoping to tune into The Bible from the guest room. She's definitely moved by the story, which is nice. I wasn't so sure that we get the H.C. via straight cable. Mindy and I headed to bed a few minutes later. After all, Thursday was another work day for me. Xmas was fun, but I was happy to put another one behind us. Good night waning Xmas moon!

Drinking Early!

Was up near 8am and quickly started coffee and completed calisthenics. It snowed overnight, but only about half an inch. To go along with the magic Xmas snow, it was really cold again, too, at the time, only 11 degrees. It was expected to hover in the 20s all day with a mix of sun and clouds. Because the boys slept downstairs, they were up and in my face early. Landon did sit-ups and push-ups right alongside me. Cute!

I was soon engaged in work, even though it remained incredibly quiet for most of the day. I didn't leave for a run until almost 930am. Even then, Mindy still wasn't up. I dressed warmly but didn't over do it. I was comfortable throughout the three mile run. That's right, clipped the run to just three miles, which would likely be the case for the remainder of the week leading up to my vacation. Footing was a little tricky with a super thin coating of ice just below the half inch or so of new fallen snow. To that point, as cold as it was, there hadn't been any meltage.

Home near 1030am, I shoveled the light snow coverage from the drive and walk and then headed inside to get busy with work again. Still peaceful. I needed to pick-up a whole brisket from Barley's which we ordered last Friday. I also needed to pick-up a last minute Xmas present from Target for Mindy - a 2014 calendar I had made with family photos. It was ready and waiting since Sunday.

Even though I smelt a little ripe, I decided to remain in my running attire. I brushed my teeth and sprayed a little Axe about my body. That was I could smell like perfumed sweat. :) I left the house near 1115am. First stop the Mill Run Target. It was crowded, lots of last minute shoppers. I was in and out. The photo counter is located at the customer service desk right up front. Very efficient.

Onto Barley's. I cut through Hilliard/Arlington - Fishinger Rd all the way to Riverside then south to Barley's. Arrived at Barley's near 1140am. Katy & Daniel were working the bar. I was a little surprised at the size of the crowd. At least 40 cars in the lot. Holy smokehouse! Katy was aware of my order, asked if I paid in advance. uhhhh - no. I took an empty growler too. She quickly asked what was my pleasure. Hmmm? I really wanted the St Nick's nitro, but also knew that that was a no-no. As expected, she shared that they can't - not allowed, but more due to the fact that it would take half an hour to pour/fill. I opted instead for the regular St Nick's. I left Katy a nice tip, especially considering that it was a to-go order.

Arrived home near noon. Mindy had already carried up the warming tray for the brisket. It was my job to slice it up and get it in there while Mindy left to run an errand. To do what, I can't exactly recall. Meanwhile, the boys were doing their best to get on my nerves. It didn't matter what they were doing: Wii, watching TV, or eating, they were in constant conflict and both were guilty of various transgressions. At one point I snapped and yelled at Landon, which is rare. He immediately cowered. I felt bad, but he needed an adjustment.

I'd never sliced a brisket before, thus was about 3/4s done when I realized that it probably made more sense to slice perpendicular to the grain as opposed to with it. Oh well. By the time I was finished, both trays were heaping with meat, which I guess it should for $80. :) Mindy wasn't gone too long, no more than an hour. I think it was 130p. We were expecting family to start showing up as early as 2pm, though our original time was 3pm. Ash, Steven & Olivia were coming early since they had to be elsewhere that evening. The same held true for Kaileigh, Shelly, and crew.

For whatever the reason, I was feeling a little extra stressed/grouchy. Not entirely sure why. I poured my first beer around 230pm. That helped! :) By 3pm, and just as it was planned, we had a house full including my mom, dad, brother Tom & Wally, Ash, Olivia & Steven, Rocky, Landon, Kaileigh, Shelly, Trip and Sienna. Later, Lindsey, niece Jaucqie and her two kids, Zoey and Bradley. Also making a rare appearance was nephew Chris, his wife, Joe and their three kids.

Gift opening took place near 4pm, in part so Ashley and company could leave for their next party. We had a house full until 7pm or so. Oh, we kept the boys' Kindles until I could get them properly established under Lindsey instead of me. We sent Addison & Averie's gifts first with Ashley, but she forgot them. In fact, dad & Tommy forgot to take their gifts too. Jacob & Bella got home around 7pm after 4 days with Jimaken - the longest stretch of time that he's had them short of their annual summer trip to the Outer Banks. Bella was very excited to share the gift she received from her dad - a Surface. Dropped it on the floor twice in the first 30 minutes she was home. Oh boy!

It must've been around 8-830pm when Me, Mindy, mom & dad settled in the family room and watched It's a Wonderful Life. Love that movie. Neither of the kids were interested in watching the movie. They were off to bed fairly early, at least for them. Dad left soon after the movie ended, and Mom soon headed off to bed. Shortly thereafter, Mindy and I did the Santa thing. We only did the kids. I figured I would place Mindy's packages around the tree early AM. With few exceptions, me being the first one up is a given.

Finished up around 11pm. Mindy was soon off to bed. I stayed up a while longer finishing a beer and watching part of the Vatican Xmas - an annual tradition. I soon joined Mindy in bed where we watched it together. I fell asleep maybe 45 minutes in. Good thing I DVR'd it. Merry Xmas!

Dewey's Steel Balls

I was up and out of bed around 620am. It was a work day but didn't feel like it, at least not until I was downstairs banging out calisthenics. By the time push-ups were behind me and I had a cup of coffee in hand, it felt like any other work day. This one would be a little different, however. For one, I was scheduled to take my Cisco cert test at 230pm at the CSCC campus.

I spent most of the time I usually spend playing on the computer taking more practice tests. I headed out for a run near 9am after making sure work was quiet. Ran the full 4 miles. As for the weather, it was back to winter and presently 32 degrees. There was even a few snow flurries during the run. I was happy to see it.

Back home near 940am, I thought it wise to get the Thule loaded on top of the Pilot for any inclement weather hits (supposed to get really cold again Tuesday). Went to the shed to retrieve it. Went up about as easy as ever, though I did struggle with the lock mechanism once it was mounted. A little WD-40 later and it was fine.

I'd already relocked the shed, but from the garage I realized that the deck furniture cushions were still in front of the BM'er stowed in large trash bags. Rather than procrastinate further, I reopened the shed then carried and stowed the three large bags containing the deck cushions.

Mindy was up by the time I got back inside. I got back to work while also reviewing course material. Mindy was up near 10am. She was leaving to run errands, including a stop at the grocery store. Can't remember where else. Anyway, she didn't figure to be home before I left at 130pm to take my test. She wished me luck. I was concerned but knew that I studied as hard as I could. And sink or swim, I felt like I had as a good of an understanding of the material as I could.

The work day was especially quiet, which was a blessing in its own right. I was able to use most of the morning for review. I showered around noon and then reviewed the material one last time, being careful to leave myself a solid 15 minutes before my planned to departure to clear my mind and then meditate. Mindy got home from her errands right at 130pm, or just as I was jacketing up to depart. She wished me luck again. Since I wouldn't be permitted to carry in any personal belongings, I took just my wallet and cell phones, which I knew I'd be asked to secure in a locker.

Traffic was minimal. I made it downtown via 670E in 10 minutes. Was parked and inside by 145pm. My testing time wasn't actually set to begin until 230pm. They request that testers arrive at least 15 minutes early. At the time, there were several people there in front of me. In fact, the staff seemed a little overwhelmed. The CSCC testing center is a testing proctor for several organizations. A crusty older gentleman did his best to manage the temporary chaos. Told all of us more than once to take seats. I had to chuckle when I heard another guy tell him that he didn't want to sit, because that's how I felt too.

Son enough the crusty gentleman called me to the counter and got me started with the sign-in process. He gave me a locker key and had me stow all of my personal belongings in there before he ushered me to the computer testing room and set-up the Cisco cert program. He handed me a grease pencil and two blank laminated sheets for scribbling. I had 90 minutes to answer 50 questions, a combination of multiple choice, simulations, and simulets.
I knew from the class I took that the three simulations were a must to pass the overall test. Without doing well on them, even a 100% on all else would still net a fail.

The first 5 or 6 questions were all multiple guess, and covered material I felt comfortable with. However, that said, the available answers were worded far differently than in the actual material. In other words. you better really understand the concept or else. The first simulation was a challenge, but seemingly not impossible. It took me a few minutes to figure how to do it. It was a challenge, however, and I was taking a lot of time just on it. I had to answer four questions none of which I felt more than about 70% confident with my answers. Can't dwell. No time. I had to move on.

After a few more tricky multiple choice questions, the 2nd simulation popped up. I blew it big time. More than that, I wasted at least 20 minutes simply trying to get a handle on the questions, commands, and results. I simply had to move on, but not before making a blind educated guess at all four of the questions. Hey, can't dance! More questions and simulets. Soon looked at the timer in the upper right hand corner revealing that I had only 13 minutes to go and still had 14 questions remaining, plus one more simulation. Wow! Where had all the time gone? By then, I figured I had blown the overall test, but remained determined to give it my best. Bottom line, I finished the test - answered every question with just under a minute to go.

Having certified some 12 years prior, I knew that the program would let me know if I passed or failed even before leaving my chair. Somehow or another, I managed to booger up the feedback process that followed the survey/ feedback section. I find it somewhat funny that they ask you to complete the survey before showing you your results. Probably a good plan. :)

I walked out and to the counter to get my results, my driver's license, and sign out. The young woman working the counter handed me my results printed on a sheet of paper. I didn't bother looking. I was all but certain I had failed. I gathered my belongings from the locker (cell phone an coat) then stopped in the bathroom to pee before heading out. I waited until I was in the Accord to review my official results. Failed! I believe my score was 642 out of 1000. Needed 810 to pass. In my world, I missed it by a mile. I was a little discouraged but not for lack of effort. I knew that I tried my best. Once I was driving home, I phoned Mindy to give her an update and let her know that I was on my way home. Even though I didn't get the cert, I felt a sense of relief having the testing process behind me. However, I wasn't really looking forward to sharing my failure with my boss.

Got home near 3pm. Mindy was busy upstairs giving the master bath a thorough cleaning, its first in quite a while. Needed it bad! While she did that, I got busy again with regular work. There was a work issue needing my attention. I spent the next couple hours involved in that. Meanwhile, we had dinner plans with the Jump's. We were supposed to meet at Dewey's in Grandview at 6pm. Mindy asked if I was going to be able to go given my predicament. I planned to, and worked hard to get all my ducks in a row before it was time to depart.

Turned out, things were in a good place near 530pm when we left for Dewey's. At least there wasn't much more I could do. Arrived at Dewey's near 6pm, just as we had planned. The Jump's were already inside watching pizzas being made through the glass wall. Cute! We were soon guided to a table. Been a while since I've been to Dewey's. Think it was shortly after they opened a few years ago that I was last there. Not only do they serve up some really good pizza, but they also have some decent draft beers on tap. Courtney & Jeremy & kids had a busy day. Spent the early part with family in Willard and then the afternoon at the pool at their hotel. I was a little surprised when they shared that they were flying home on Tuesday (Xmas Eve) around noon.

I ordered their guest draft a porter/stout mix. Not sure the brewery, but it was really good. At the same time, Jeremy went with a Fat Head's Head Hunter IPA - popular and good! Mindy & Courtney only water. The two kids, Porter and Ella each had Root beer. Very cute kids! Ella is 4 and a handful. I think it's fair to say, all the two of them can handle. :) Mindy gifted the kids chocolate santas. Ella was eager to eat hers even before our pies arrived. In retrospect, probably should've held off on giving them chocolate until after our dinner arrived.

Pizzas arrived about 20 minutes later, and we ordered 3: the special, which was a meat lovers, a buffalo chicken, and lastly a small cheese. I ordered a 2nd beer, too. Yum! The company, pizza, and beer was good. By the time we finished dinner, the place was packed - several families waiting in the smallish lobby. We said our goodbyes and wished the Jump's a merry Xmas. Lastly, they extended an invite for us to come and visit them in Ft. Lauderdale.

Mindy and I had talked about the possibility of stopping at Barley's on the way home for one beer, and while it was still relatively early, Mindy cited being tired and had a stronger desire to rest at home. I agreed. We had plenty of beer at home. I planned to try one of the Twelve Dogs of Xmas she picked up earlier that day at the grocery store.

One the drive home, I called Lindsey asking that she go ahead and bring the boys over at 830pm. The original plan had her bringing them over around 530am so she could be at work by 6am. The boys were very excited to be coming over to spend the night. And that way, we wouldn't have to get up some dang early. Home by 8pm, I poured a pint of Xmas ale while Mindy enjoyed water. She did, however, try the 12 Dogs.

As expected, Lindsey dropped the boys off at 830pm. Once they were settled we put in a Xmas movie - Chevy Chase, Xmas Vacation, which is one of my all-time favorite movies. I've seen it no less than 50 times and still laugh. The boys loved it too, at least while they were awake. Landon fell asleep no more than 30 minutes into the movie. And by the end, Rocky was asleep, too. Mindy suggested rather than waking them for bed, that we simply make them comfortable in the family room. She went for extra blankets. Rocky slept on the sofa. Landon slept on the floor. Mindy and I were in bed by 11pm.

World in My Fingers

Bella's snowman meets untimely demise

Not sure of the exact time I rolled out of bed, but I know it was somewhere close to 8am. It was partly sunny and looked warm. After starting coffee, I checked the temperature. It was a balmy 61 degrees. I played around online for a while and also enjoyed coffee. I didn't set out on a run until about 930am. It was so nice that I didn't even need a jacket. I did, however, wear a winter-weight compression wicking shirt. Immediately out the door it remained partly sunny, but just to the west there was nothing but clear blue skies. And by the time I finished the three mile run those blue skies were only minutes away.

Mindy was up and out sitting on the deck with the pug. I topped off my coffee and joined her there much like I would most summer mornings. I pointed out that the sun was just about to clear the last of the clouds. Once that happened it was a gorgeous spring-like morning. We hung out on the deck for nearly an hour.

Near 11am I headed inside where I made a quick omelet for the three of us. I didn't add any fixin's until I'd parsed off a section for the pug. I then added only spinach and garlic salt to Mindy's. Added cheese, spinach and garlic to my own. It was tasty. My plan was to once again spend the day studying. While I did that, Mindy wrapped presents for the kids.

I studied from the family room all afternoon, though at1pm I tuned to Fox NFL coverage to catch at least some of the Bengals and Vikings game. I watched without much emotion and with the volume completely down. Studying was my priority 1.

Earlier, Mindy suggested we grill steaks on the grill for dinner, but as the afternoon progressed I sensed that the desire had faded. For one, the clear blue skies turned cloudy again and Mindy's cold/cough was seemingly taking its toll. Sure enough, by later afternoon, she no longer was interested in that idea. Instead, she suggested we have cream of chicken over rice. By then it was 630pm. I was still studying and did so until almost 8pm. I did, however, slip off upstairs for a shower around 530pm. Felt nice. Mindy spent her entire day wrapping presents. And by the way, the Vikings got crushed by the Bengals 42-14.

We are cream of chicken over rice around 7pm. Just as Mindy hoped, it hit the spot - comfort food. I studied for another hour or so before calling it a night. I got through almost all of the course material as well as the labs. I still wasn't feeling that confident about Monday's test, however, especially if it was anything like the practice tests I was subscribed to. I was averaging only about 65% with an occasional 80% sprinkled in. Mindy headed to bed early. I stayed up taking practice tests pretty much with the same results referenced above. Headed for bed somewhere close to 11pm.

Rain Rain Rain

I woke to rain and the expectation of much more to come. I wasn't troubled in the least, however, as my plan all along was to spend this day and the next studying for the CCENT certification test which I scheduled for Monday. Had plenty of time to enjoy coffee and play ahead of a run. Didn't plan to dig into the books until noon or so. I needed some time for me, too.

Along with the rain, the temperature was really warm - at the time almost 60 degrees - and an expected afternoon high near 65. I headed out for a run near 10am in a light rain that varied in intensity more than once during the three mile run. I didn't get soaked but wet enough that I put my running shoes on a heat vent upon my return. I did my best to avoid the many puddles along my running trail, most of which were formed not so much by the falling rain, but instead by the sudden snow meltage.

Mindy was up shortly after my return. Her plans were to get her hair colored (highlighted) purple and then go to Jacob's basketball game and possibly even some more Xmas shopping. That worked for me. I figured the more alone time the better my studying would go - no distractions. Periodically, the it rained mid-summer hard to where the water poured off the roof like a waterfall. A glance out the back door revealed major ponding in the low spots and a stream running across the stone patio I built for Mindy near the creek's edge.

Long after Mindy left and during a break from studying, I slipped into my snow boots and headed out to the backyard where I unclogged the drain that should've been carrying water under the patio. It was clogged with leaves. I also retrieved a large purple plastic pail that Bella had down near the water, once about a foot above the water level. As it was, it was about to float off in the swell of water.

I studied all afternoon. And just as one might expect, time flew by. It was 430pm in a hurry. I only got about half as far as I hoped I might. Good thing I still had all day Sunday to study too. And actually, I studied on and off again Saturday up until the time Mindy & I left for dinner at CBC. Speaking of Mindy, she was home from her hair appointment and Jacob's game around 545pm. BY then I had showered and returned to the books. And even though I'd gotten through only about half the material, I felt really good about what I managed to glean from it.

Mindy took a shower soon after she got home. I guess it's not a good idea to shower (wash) your hair before coloring. Instead, they recommend waiting until after. Hmmmm? We left for CBC near 7pm. By then the day's heavy rains had all but subsided. Figured we'd gotten a couple inches easy.

Not too big a crowd at CBC at all. Lots of seating available both at the bar as well as the restaurant. We took our two favorite stools along the west side of the bar. Vince & Emily were working the bar. Vince started pouring a Bodhi right away. I suggested he pass that one off to Mindy and then pour me an Orthodox's from Actual Brewing Co. Mindy was hungry and asked for bread. Vince let us know that our first two beers were on our friends John & Carolyn who were in an hour or so earlier, but left for the casino before we arrived. Cool. Thanks guys!

Mindy stayed busy passing out gift bags to all of our CBC peeps. By the end of the night, I think she passed out ten of them. Vince or Emily, can't recall which, brought us some risotto balls. And then a little bit later, some of their bread. It wasn't baked all the way, or hadn't risen properly. Not sure exactly what was wrong with it, but it still tasted good. We didn't complain.

Mindy eventually ordered dinner, the nightly special, which consisted of Mahi, sticky rice and veggies. I thought I might order something too, but never did. I wasn't that hungry or ready when Mindy placed her order. I did have a few bites of Mindy's rice. Through dinner and drinks, we passively watched most of the Buckeye basketball game against Notre Dame. We held a slim lead for most of the first half, but managed to squander the lead mid way through the 2nd half due to some very poor shooting, which for whatever the reason, is what happens almost every time I watch them. In fact, with under two minutes to play, we trailed by 8 points. All but over. I briefly turned my attention elsewhere and stopped watching. Next thing I know, with 40 seconds left to play, we were within 2 points. Apparently we managed to quick steals and converted both to points. Another 20 seconds or so passed and we managed to take the lead. Bam! Just like that they won. Reminded me of a Bob Knight coached Indiana team that had a reputation for pulling out games like that.

Still battling a cough and cold, Mindy was fading. We left for home around 930pm, but not before having a growler filled with Bodhi. We left a decent tip for our CBC friends. Mindy didn't want to stay up too late. She headed to bed while I stayed. I eventually turned on the TV to watch SNL but made it through only the opening monologue before getting sleepy and heading up to bed.

Tooth Pain Finally Meets its Demise

The Jump's Do pre-XMAS CMH

Let myself sleep in until 540am. Soon downstairs for exercise which consisted of sit-ups, windmills, and push-ups. It was warm - 48 degrees warm, and expected to climb all the way into the mid 50s for the next three days. Also expecting heavy rain. Of course the bright spot for me was that it would allow me to study/cram all weekend without feeling a sense of loss for lack of ski time.

Poured coffee and headed to my desk. Played on my PC until 620 before giving a look and see at my work laptop. Sandwiched in between was the delivery of Mindy's coffee. Said she was tired. She coughed many times through the night. Jacob was in much better spirits before heading out the door to school. It was the last day of school before Xmas break and he was counting on getting his phone back later that evening. I told Mindy that I thought it was a mistake to give it back so soon, but would support whatever she decided.

I planned to leave for a run before 7am to ensure that I'd be ready to head off to my endo appointment around 915am (actual appt was set for 945am). Due to the freakish warmth, I didn't bother with hand and ear covers, though I still wore a winter weight compression wicking shirt and jacket. I used the zipper for airflow control. Like most Friday's, I ran just 3 miles. Felt good, too. Ran strong. Gone were almost all of the ice obstacles throughout the subdivision save for the very back of the three cul-de-sacs I encounter on a daily basis.

Ran up a really good sweat. No doubt, I could've gotten by with a lighter-weight shirt. Wasn't sure if Mindy would still be home when I returned but she was. Not for too long, though. Said our goodbyes while heading out with the pug. Bella was excited, this her last day of school prior to Xmas break. Her bag of gifts for teachers and bus driver were waiting by the door so she wouldn't forget. Mindy made eggs. Bella and I each had one. First time Bella's had eggs in several months. Bella asked if I realized that her mother went to school in PJs. I did. She went on to share how much it would embarrass her if she were there at her mom's school. Hoped she remembered to wear a bra. Too funny!

We headed out to the bus stop at 755am. Prior to that, I worked on a report I typically put together each Friday AM. Little snow remained on the ground, only a few piles were the sun doesn't hit. I tossed a couple snow balls above Bella and Makayla who stood near neighbor Trena's garage door. Ryan, the kindergartner, who lives just down the road picked up on my misbehavior and tossed some snow at me. Only problem, Ryan picked up chunks of hard ice and sent them hurtling my way. It hit my right hand just right effectively poking a small hole n my third finger which bled profusely. His mom thought I was kidding at first, but I wasn't. It hurt too. I plunged my hand deep into a shoveled snow bank still hanging on at the edge of Trena's driveway. That helped some but the bleeding continued. The bus showed up near 8am. I was little disappointed in Bella, the way she handed her bus driver her gift. She didn't even make eye contact, handed it to her as she passed, as if to day, hey, here, but not from me.

Back home, I washed my finger in the kitchen faucet then wrapped it tightly in a paper towel. Around 830am I headed for a shower. It was still bleeding. Thankfully, though, by the time I was out of the shower and dressed it had finally stopped. The wound itself was tiny. Must have hit me in the perfect spot for excessive bleeding. Spent time working until it was time to leave. Left the house for my root canal at 920am, an appointment that I was very much looking forward to.

Arrived at Jennifer's office early. Had to be before 935am. I sat in their cozy lobby for a few minutes before they called me back. I sat in the dental chair for no more than 2 or 3 minutes before Jennifer came in with one of her assistants. Discussed where we last left off a month or so prior. Took her a few to recollect the facts. Discussed what's changed and my suspicion of it being my upper left canine. Before proceeding, as any dentist worth their salt would do, she ran a few tests and took a new X-ray of the entire tooth tip to tail. Aside from the extreme sensitivity there was nothing unusual. Agreed to proceed with the root canal after I shared the occasional knife like pain in my left nostril (sinus cavity). Said that was a tell-tale sign of trouble with the canine. Great. Let's do this thing!

Jennifer numbed me up which I felt just a little stick. Let me sit with a magazine for maybe ten minutes while the numbing meds took effect. I was a tad nervous. Said she purposefully didn't numb the roof of my mouth. But as it turned out, there was no reason to be nervous. I didn't feel a dang thing. To boot, she was done with the actual procedure in less than 15 minutes. Impressive. Explained what she was doing each step along the way. Jennifer had a way about her that's very relaxing. I could've napped, it was so easy.

After the root canal. Jennifer patiently reviewed the follow-up care, and shared that I could likely expect swelling and discomfort, like a bruise. She gave me prescriptions for both an antibiotic as well as Tylenol #2 with Codeine. I wouldn't get either if I had my way, but I guess time would tell. I gave Jennifer a hug before leaving. I was surprised to see that it was only 1016am when I was in the Accord and heading for home. For some reason, I thought my entire morning might be shot and then even some of the afternoon due to pain. Though still locally numb, I felt great. I was back at home before 1030am and quickly at my desk and back to work.

Compared to most others, it was a pretty easy work day. Given that it was Friday as well as the Xmas season, I was very grateful for that. Warmed into the 50s by midafternoon. Some light rain during the afternoon too, but nothing significant. Expecting heavier rain by Saturday. We had our last official staff call of the year at 230pm. Nothing too heavy covered, just the typical year-end stuff as well as a reminder to set our out-of-office to our back-ups if applicable. Aside from Xmas day, I am scheduled to work each day next week.

Jacob was home from school just ahead of 3pm. As expected, he was in excellent spirits. Not 10-15 minutes passed before he was downstairs asking if he could go out and play. I asked if he had completed all his assigned tasks. Said he had. I let him go. Another hour passed before Bella was home. She was in a great mood as well. Mindy around that same time. She was on her way home, too. Talked for a while. I think it was close to 415pm when she actually arrived home.

Mindy, Bella, and her three amigos from the island planned to decorate Xmas cookies before Bella and Jacob left for the weekend with their dad. They got busy with all that while I put the wraps on my work day. It was after 5pm before I was ready to declare it the weekend. I spent the last 45 minutes of my day scheduling my certification test for Monday. In preparation for the exam, I planned to study all weekend, which is why I wasn't too bummed with the ugly weather forecast.

I popped in to check what the girls were up to. They were having fun decorating cookies and made one heck of a mess. It was largely contained to the kitchen table, however. They asked me to judge for best looking cookie. I took the easy way out declaring them all winners. :) Jimaken showed up around 530pm. They asked him to judge too. He picked perhaps the ugliest one of the bunch, which was decorated by Bella, though he didn't know it a the time. I later learned that Mindy had told Bella how bad it was and hurt her feelings. It was more a case of Bella not following directions, I think. Not a big deal.

Mindy and I planned to visit Barley's. We also had tentative arrangements to hook-up with neighbors Pat & Lisa, plans we sorta put together via text on Wednesday. Mindy still needed to shower. Since it was pajama day at school, she opted to wait and shower after school Ewh!

It was 645pm before we left the house. Over the past couple of days, Mindy's developed another ugly cough. I'm quite sure that it hasn't been even a month since her last cough/cold. Barley's was full. Parked in the back 40. No bar seating available but the high community tables had several stools available. We took a couple of those. I ordered a St Nick's nitro. Takes a good 5 minutes to pour and then have the head settle. Mindy went with St Joan's. Said she'd likely only have the one due mostly to her not feeling 100%. Said she'd drive.

Mindy passed out several small gift bags to our Barley peeps. She made a special one for Justin. They all contained a $10 Starbucks card, candy and an ornament. Justin's some additional cash. I think she gave out 8 or 9 in total. We have some at home for our CBC peeps. Plan to deliver those Saturday night. Once the Buckeye Sports Bulletin guy left the bar area, our friend Rick, who was sitting talking with him came over and joined us. Not to much time went by before Pat & Lisa showed up. They'd already had dinner with others. Rick very much enjoys Lisa's company. Remembers much about her. He's like that - strong memory.

Perhaps midway through my 2nd beer I caught a glimpse of Jeremy & Courtney slipping out the door, presumably after having dinner at one of the tables in the back. Holy smoke! Didn't know that they were home. I quickly alerted Mindy and insisted she go after them. She stopped whatever conversation she was in and bolted towards the exit to intercept them. The rest of us soon joined. Turns out they are in town for a few days for Xmas. Had both kids with them, Porter and Ella, who are 6 & 4 respectively. Talked for a while. Mindy & Courtney exchanged phone numbers so we can keep in touch and possibly even hook-up while they're in town. Recently moved from Boston to Ft. Lauderdale. We knew they moved to Florida after seeing something on FB, but weren't sure of the city/town until Friday.

About 30 minutes went by before Mindy got a text from Courtney sharing that they were coming back without the kids if we were gonna be there for a while. Heck yeah! I sent Bob & Mary Ann a text sharing as much and hoping that they could stop in too. M.A. responded promptly that she was working. Jeremy & Courtney were back a couple minutes later. I think his brother, who lives in Grandview, agreed to keep an eye on the kids.

Bob I. showed up a few minutes later, right about the time that Mindy was drafting him a text. She apparently didn't realize that I had already done so. Said he couldn't stay too long, just one beer. The dogs were waiting patiently out in the minivan. Wanted to stop in and see everyone before heading home for Xmas. Glad he stopped in. Funny thing occurred to all of us while hanging out. Pat & Lisa are from Norwalk, Jeremy & Courtney from Willard, and Bob & Mary Ann from Wadsworth. All from the Greater Cleveland area.

Bob stayed through one beer but ordered wings to-go. I ordered wings, fries, and onions straws for the table. Chelsea was our server, by the way. Turned out, the lone guy sitting at the table when Mindy and I originally walked up was none other than her new boyfriend, David. He was very quiet at first but eventually warmed to all of us. Not too much of the food I ordered was eaten by anyone other than me. I was hungry and knew that I really needed to eat. I had three of those St. Nick's over the course of the evening which spanned about 3.5 hours. Called it a night just before 11pm and crated our leftover for home. What a good time. Good to see all of our friends in one happy place.

Mindy was more than surprised to find that it was 11pm. As agreed earlier, she drove us home. Once there, she quickly headed for bed. I stayed up a few extra minutes reading and responding to a couple emails from David who was trying to book our Tahoe accommodations. I wanted to make sure we were booking the property that he and I agreed on earlier. From email it was difficult to decipher, at least with certainty.
