Dainty Filet

This question came up after Saturday's Buckeye game... What is the difference between a bull and a steer, and what are the ones called that have no horns? A steer has been castrated, a bull has not. A Steer are preferred over bulls because of their calmer demeaner and placement of body mass. The majority of the body mass of a bull is up by its neck, where as, the prime cuts of meat develop in the back half of the steer. Surprisingly—for us city folks at least—cows (that is, mature female cattle) can have horns! In fact, there are several cattle breeds in which the cows have horns. To name just a few: the Danish Red, the White Park, and the Texas Longhorn.Having horns works both ways; that is, cattle without horns can be bulls. The Angus and the Red Poll are examples of breeds that are hornless, be they cow or be they bull!To make cattle gender identification even trickier, horns can be artificially removed. This is a common safety practice, as horns can be dangerous to humans, to other cattle, and to the horn-bearing cattle themselves. Methods of de-horning include chemicals, hot irons, clipping, and sawing. To put it all in perspective: if someone points out a group of cattle—horned or unhorned—and insists that it’s a herd of cows, it just might be. Maybe. But then again, it might be a bunch of bull! I was up about 15 minutes early, and once again all credit to the recent time change. I felt really good and quickly jumped head first into my 55 sit-ups. Then, after checking the weather, I whipped out 53 push-ups just before heading out with Ykraps. It was nice – about 54 degrees under mostly clear skies. We were back at home by 5:42am. I poured some coffee and kicked back in front of the PC. I had plenty of time. I read a few NFL game reviews and checked brother Glenn’s blog. At 610am I broke away, woke Mindy, and delivered her coffee. I had no need for more PC time, so I moved immediately to meditation and stretching. I needed both! Because of the nice weather, I skipped a jacket and instead wore a thick wicking shirt but no gloves. I felt really good, so I ran the full four miles. Mindy knew that I ran four based simply on my return time. Breakfast was already at the table. I sat down to enjoy my eggs and fruit. Mindy added some of Sunday’s leftover bacon too. BACON! Mindy left for school and I headed up for a shower. The kids and I were ready to go by 7:55am. As is typical, the kids headed out a minute or two in front of me. As soon as I was in site, Bella ran to me tattling that Jacob had just spit on her. Not good! I calmly asked for an explanation. He said it was simply an accident happening while he spoke to her. Bella didn’t balk at his explanation. I didn’t see it, so I pursued it no further. Kids! Soon I was off to work. It was a gloriously beautiful drive, but too short! I picked up right where I left off at home. In fact, I felt as though I didn’t have much of a weekend. But, that’s my job. I stayed busy all day and never did take a formal lunch break. Mindy suggested we grill steaks for dinner. I didn’t get out of work until just after 530pm. She agreed to get the grill going. We had loose arrangements to have Chrissy & the kids for dinner since Kenny was out of town but Chrissy changed plans after Makayla got sick. Jacob and I walked Ykraps. Mindy was on the phone inviting my friend Tom Clark to dinner when we got back. I wasn’t that excited about company. Our house looked a wreck and I was tired. But that’s Mindy. The steaks were ready. I believe she put them in the oven while we waited on Tom – said he’d be about 20 minutes. I used the time somewhat constructively working in my blog. Tom arrived at or near 6:30pm. Finally, we sat to eat. We had filet mignon, baked potatoes, and rolls - no veggies. The steaks were OK but slightly overdone. Mindy tends to over cook them. Me, I tend to under cook them. Dinner was good. The kids seem to enjoy Tom’s company. He’s got a million stories that always keep the kids entertained. He asked to see my hot water tank project. I showed him that and the “hole in the wall” project, too. After dinner, we sat in the family room watching pre-MNF programming. While everyone else chatted, I sanded the mudded drywall then applied another coat to the obvious imperfections. Best guess, Tom headed out around 8pm. We all headed upstairs to slip into our PJ’s before the actual game began. Mindy allowed the kids to stay up and watch the first quarter of the game. That carried us through to 9pm. Bella secretly asked me to pop some popcorn. She’s no doubt addicted. When I tucked her in, she emphasized that she would use her ‘sniffer’ to detect the scent should I change my mind. Very cute!
