Movin' Day
I woke once around 4:30am and then again around 5:30am, but I didn’t pull myself out of bed for good until 6:15am. I knew that if I wanted to be on schedule, I had to be up and on the ball. The goal was to complete exercises, walk Ykraps, have coffee, run, and pick-up the moving truck by 9am.
I achieved success. I was ready to fetch the moving van by 8:30am. Jacob asked if he could go along. I agreed. We arrived at Lee’s RV’s at 8:50am – ten minutes ahead of schedule and before they opened for business. To kill ten minutes, we walked around looking at campers. That did it. The next thing we knew they were opened.
We greeted Ed at the desk and began processing the paper work for our reservation. Unfortunately, Ed said they didn’t have an appliance dolly available despite his assistant telling us they did on Thursday. To ease matters, he called his buddy down the road who did have one. Day saved! We could not move without one. We have three refrigerators to move. As we headed down the road I realized that Ed hadn’t given us our furniture pads either. After picking up the appliance dolly, we returned for the pads. The truck was 24’ long and drove like a semi, although it was straight truck and had an automatic transmission. The cab was very clean & air-conditioned.
Back at home, I noticed that Tommy was already present. I woofed down some breakfast casserole before getting to work and Mindy told me that Lindsey called. I asked what the bad news was. She told me that she’d tell me later. I respectfully said, tell me now. Lindsey reports that her car is now leaking anti-freeze. I would blank that out for now. I can’t afford to think about it. Tommy and I got right to work lugging the old Frigidaire up and out of the basement. This is the old refrigerator that we had when I was a young boy. I brought it with me from Valleyview where it served as a basement beer fridge. I should’ve never brought it but I did. The plan was to load it on the truck and then dump it somewhere – hopefully in the dumpster in Mindy’s subdivision. Tommy and I learned a lot about moving refrigerators. It sucks! It took all the strength the two of us could muster to lug that beast up the stairs. It damn near killed me, and Tommy too. The load and ferocious grunting scared the begeezies out of Bella, She ran and hid.
A few battle scars later we finally had it on the truck. I was already soaked with sweat and dirty, and we’d just begun. We headed towards Mindy’s no more than 3 or 4 minutes behind schedule. When we came upon the dumpster Mindy told us about it was apparent that we couldn’t dump the fridge in it. Even if we could’ve, it would’ve taken up the entire thing and the neighbors would’ve freaked. I figured we’d resort to plan “B”. Problem was that I didn’t know what plan “B” was just yet. Larry and Todd were already at Mindy’s when we pulled up. Immediately we began loading stuff onto the truck. They were a bit surprised by the old nasty refrigerator on the truck. I told them it was mine from the kitchen. J
We loaded all the ‘big stuff’ with everything destined for my home first. Next, stuff for storage. We filled the truck end to end. The first stop was slated to be Gloria’s where we were dropping an old bed and table. We ended up putting those in Mindy’s van. We put some additional stuff destined for storage in both Todd & Larry’s pick-up beds. Next stop, our Secured Storage unit on Fisher Rd. We made quick work of the storage unit and before we knew it, we were on our way to my house.
At my house no time was wasted. We began the process of unloading. The plan was to place the large items exactly where they needed to go. No sense wasting energy moving things twice. The only complications were exchanging my washer & refrigerator. We moved mine out and Mindy’s in. We’d be taking my two to the storage unit. Mindy’s washer, while an inferior brand, has a significantly larger tub, and her fridge is newer, bigger, and prettier. We were done in less than an hour. Larry & Todd split around 1:30pm. Mindy headed back to her old house to ready for moving her ‘Xmas decorations’. Tommy and I were stopping at the storage unit to drop the washer and fridge. While there we finally settled on plan ‘B’ from earlier. We would not only place my existing fridge in storage, but we’d also leave the ‘old nasty’ there too. It still works and I figure that over the course of a year, someone will want/need it. To that end, we loaded it last leaving it the easiest to access.
Tommy had to be at work by 4pm. He left from there. I headed to Echo Park Dr. to meet Mindy. I figured the rest would be trivial after what we’d been through earlier. What I didn’t count on was Mindy having more Xmas decorations that Macy’s! She had upwards of 50 Rubbermaid totes with decorations! Not only is she a relative of Saint Nick, she’s also a heaving investor in Rubbermaid. We filled the 24’ truck half again with her totes and boxes. Holy shit Batman!
Finally, we had hit near bottom. Only trivial items remained on Echo Park bring an end to what must seem like a nightmare to Mindy. We met back at home and immediately began unloading all the boxes. I cut Mindy no slack. She had to carry her share of the 50 boxes to the basement just like me. Lindsey called mid-stream and asked if she could come over for me to look at the Honda now. I agreed. She was bringing Kaileigh, too. I haven’t seen Kaileigh since June 16th. Soon after, Mindy’s friend Tara called and made arrangements to drop the kids home. We weren’t done but they needed to get on with their day. We appreciated their help with keeping the kids. We kept working despite the kids and Lindsey being over. We knew that if we stopped, we wouldn’t finish. Lindsey helped by entertaining the kids while we worked. She ultimately took the kids to the neighborhood park for a short period. When she returned, Mindy went and fetched a couple of Minnelli’s pizzas.
I kept working away until I had the truck clean and ready for its return in the early AM. To add to the days stress, I was dealing with a work related escalation virtually all day long. I had work on my cell phone as the kids were making lots and lots of noise. My asking them to shush was apparently too much for Lindsey. She up and left in a huff! Luckily, I had peaked at her leaking coolant while she was at the park with the kids. She was right, it did seem to be coming from the bottom hose. I told her that we’d look at it more closely tomorrow at Grandpa Glenn’s where I’d feel much more comfortable and could use his jack and stands.
I felt bad that she left. I really wanted to spend some time with my GD Kaileigh. She and I haven’t been able to spend any quality time together lately. After they left, Mindy got he kids settled and ultimately ready for bed. It was well after their bed time. They went out quickly. Once they were soundly asleep, Mindy and I cracked some wine and beer. I was looking forward to a Raspberry Ale. Mindy started working on straightening up and decorating the living room. By the time she was finished for the night, our living room was looking much more livingroom-ish. I couldn’t believe it but we stayed up until 11pm, although both of us were ready to collapse. I had no strength whatsoever left in my arms or legs. Moving is a bitch!
