Only She Screams for Ice Cream

Was up and out of bed by 540am. Downstairs I stepped out on the deck to sauna-like conditions. Brutal! And after calisthenics I got the skiing from Yahoo. It was 75 degrees and near 90% humidity. Not exactly September type weather. Moreover, the day’s high was forecasted to reach a balmy 93. Good thing Mindy planned on staying home with Jacoby since her classroom doesn’t have AC.

Carried on with my usual routine short of waking Mindy and delivering coffee. Since she wasn’t going to school didn’t make any sense to wake her up. I did my full pre run agenda. After exercise, I enjoyed coffee and internet then did a thorough meditation and stretching session. It was 655am when I left for my run.

Due to the extreme weather conditions, I ran without a shirt. Any time I do that I can’t help but think back to Chris Speilman’s radio rant about older men running without shirts in Arlington. Says there’s no need for it with wicking technology. Not sure that he had a good pulse on that one, but I sure do. Feels like an extra and unwanted layer of skin. Sorry neighbors!

I ran the full 4.1 miles without any issues. Worked up quite a lather too, but never once felt too warm. The sun was just beginning to clear the rooftops when I hit the halfway mark. Days are getting noticeably shorter in a hurry. Heck, only 11 more days of summer. No matter, I am ready for autumn and winter. Think snow!

Back at home I was a little surprised to find Mindy up and in the kitchen. She even made my breakfast. I guess she did have to wake Bella for school. It was already 740am. I hurried through breakfast. Heard Bella ask Mindy to come to join us at the bus stop. Mindy headed up to change out of her PJs and robe. I barely finished my breakfast when it was time to head out. The three of us and the pug headed out together. The others were already there. Mindy hugged Chrissy and described in great detail Jacob’s illness/virus. The bus showed up a few minutes later. No worries. I walked the pug after the bus left.

Back at home I enjoyed a bit more coffee then spent a little time on the deck. Mindy was still outside talking with Chrissy. She wasn’t long, though. Soon she came out on the deck where I was checking out our plants. I didn’t hang out long. I needed to get in the shower and on my way to work.

I was showered and dressed to leave by 840am. Left for work near 845am. I was working across town and was hopeful that the traffic would cooperate. It did. Easy drive across town. Arrived shortly after 9am. Had to park in the extremities of the 3rd parking lot. Long walk to the building but one I don’t really mind. Time to think and appreciate the late summer beauty.

Soon I was completely immersed in work. Had to throw together a last minute conference call to resolve an ongoing issue. The call lasted almost two hours. Because I was basically just facilitating, I was able to multitask and complete some other stuff, too. However, I missed a regular scheduled call because of the call. I pinged a peer to cover me. She did so willingly.

The morning flew by. Soon it was 1pm and time for out Tuesday afternoon tech meeting. That went reasonably well but took the full hour. I spent the rest of the afternoon creating a presentation for my monthly report as well as taking care of a couple urgent escalations. Was 5pm in a hurry. I packed up and headed for home.

Once I was safely on 270 I gave Mindy a call. She was multitasking in the kitchen, trying to pack Jacob’s school lunch for Wednesday while also preparing our dinner. Mentioned she was about to leave to take Bella to gymnastics for the first time since mid-May. Back in the throes of our autumn schedule: soccer practice, games, gymnastics practices and meets.

Mindy was still on the road when I arrived home and dinner was simmering on the stove. I assumed Jacob was home and upstairs but he didn’t reveal himself or make a peep. While awaiting her return I checked email and internet. She wasn’t home but 5 minutes before our dinner was on the table – spaghetti and meat sauce. More often than not, we have meatballs. This time she apparently decided to do the meat sauce thing. Said it contained a full pound of beef.

It was good. I chased it down with a glass of milk. For the past year or more, I’ve been craving whole white milk, especially with spicy dinners like spaghetti. My assumption being my body wants it. Jacob joined us for dinner and shared that he was feeling better. Mindy concurred, back to his annoying ways. Yep, he’s better. Even though he joined us for dinner, he didn’t have pasta. Instead, he had leftover Chipotle that Mindy fetched for lunch.

Clean up took me until 655pm. I had 15 minutes before I needed to bolt after Bella. I agreed to do the pick-up, which is far more palatable than the drop off. At 545pm, the traffic is still horrendous and stressful, not to mention still being in work mode. With the little time I had, I wrote for my blog. Had to put it aside at 710pm and head off to get the peanut. Was 716pm as I backed out the drive. Arrived eight minutes later. Didn't take long at all.

Gotta Flip is located in a strip of warehouse space off Georgesville & 270, and one of the adjacent spaces caught fire over the summer effectively shutting down the gym for the summer's remainder. We, of course, we unaffected as we opted out of gymnastics for the entire summer. Gotta Flip was exposed to significant smoke damage and went through a fairly in-depth remodel. Looks a lot better both in the front office as well as in the gym. Still hotter that Hades, though. No AC. Noticed a sign on the wall sharing plans for a huge expansion in the coming year - doubling in size.

Bella's class was let out almost as soon as I entered the gym. I walked out front to meet my sweaty peanut. She immediately began working me over, pleading for an ice cream stop. I denied her repeated request, but that didn't stop the asking - begging. In fact, she kept the pressure on to the point where I was getting irritated. Finally asked where she got the impression that asking the same question repeatedly would net a different response. Her quick answer was "mom'! Really? I suggested we ask Mindy once home. No, she pleaded. And just like old times, she asked that I change the radio from the Reds game to something more palatable to her tastes. I largely ignored the request. We were home by 740pm.

Bella, Mindy & I shared time together in the living room (my office). We laughed about the ride home and shared with Mindy Bella's belief that she can work us over by repeated asking. She even admitted to her mom that she's often successful by "breaking her down". :) Mindy had another beef to pick with Bella. Apparently the vitamins she was supposed to take Tuesday morning were found stashed on the neighboring chair cushion. Mindy pressed Bella for input on punishment. Having worked Bella pretty hard for the incessant begging for ice cream, I suggested just a warning. Mindy thought that was too easy but agreed. She did, however, make Bella take the vitamins then.

Mindy was soon off to bed while Bella and remained up and downstairs. I spent time writing in my blog while Bella watched trash TV in the family room. Her bed time was already established at 930pm. Come that time, I headed in to shut her down. I then took over the TV watching the NFL network - a special on the life and career of Don Shula, former Miami Dolphins super bowl winning coach. Very cool program.
I headed up for bed near 10pm.
