I'm Going Mentel

I woke about ten minutes late for the first time in weeks. I was troubled by this for just a minute. In the end, however, only my pride was damaged. I moved on with my morning like any other. Ykraps and I didn’t make it back form our walk until 6:15am. For the first time in recent memory I felt a sudden sense of urgency about my morning. No longer do I have time to squander on frivolous activities. If I don’t stay on task I will impact others. I need to be out the door running by no later than 6:40am other wise I risk Mindy being late. That’s a lot of pressure I didn’t realize until now.

With that in mind I pressed forward with my morning agenda. I downed my first cup of coffee and checked the weather forecast online. I poured Mindy a cup of coffee and delivered it shower side. The one consolation was that Mindy slept in by fifteen minutes too. It was already 6:30am and I wasn’t even dressed for my run. That same ten minutes was impacting my morning, indeed. I dressed and stretched for a run fast. I could tell just by the morning sky that I was leaving later than usual. The sky was already brightening in the eastern sky.

It was already 7:20 when I made it back to the house. Mindy was running around trying to tie up loose ends before departing for work. She apologized for not making my eggs but I was happy to make my own. I fried myself two. Just before leaving she asked if I would still try to make it to Jacob’s walk-a-thon. I agreed to make it a priority. I woofed down my eggs and saw to it that Jacob had breakfast before descending on the shower.

I sped through my shower and dressing process enough to allow a few minutes to ready Jacob for the bus stop. While he dashed off to the bus stop I threw my golf clubs into the Trooper to ready for the evenings golf. I was at the bus stop along with Pat, Alena, and Jacob right at 8:05am.

I made it to work at my usual time. I let my two peers know that I needed to leave for an early lunch around 9:30am to attend Jacob’s walk-a-thon. I want to support Jacob but don’t know that I agree with the idea of a “PTA fundraiser”. Why?

I left for Beacon Elementary at 930am sharp. I arrived a few minutes before his class was scheduled to walk. The school grounds were well prepared for such an event as they had the playfield and playground nicely decorated and marked off. In addition, they had fun music blaring and a bubble & fog machine working. A look around, there weren’t that many other parents present, and even fewer of them were men. But I didn’t mind. Jacob spotted me right away. He seemed very happy to see me and was eager to give me a hug.

It wasn’t long before we were given our instructions and started our walking. The kindergarten team was already 15 minutes into their walk. And judging by the itinerary, each grade would start 15 minutes after the prior. I walked with Jacob and a couple of his buddies. We had fun. Soon it was obvious that the girls in Jacob’s class like him quite a bit. He sheepishly played off their youthful advances and explained how they always chase him on the playground. Yep, that’s where it ALL begins! We completed seven laps around the trail in about 35 minutes before I had to depart. Jacob seemed happy when I left. I’m glad that I made time for him. I arrived back at the office by 10:30am just like I planned.

I didn’t take another break throughout the day. We did have our weekly staff meeting that went until 12:45pm. That helped the day speed along. I received an email form Bob Imber around that same time about the evening’s golf. Later we decided on Mentel Memorial (formerly Bolton). I haven’t golfed there in probably 15 years.

I stayed profusely busy right up until 4:15pm when I prepared to leave for golf. I departed at exactly 430pm. A quick glance at the freeway traffic looked sparse. For this I was thankful. But spares it was not, at least by the time I made it on. Instead, I was cast into the biggest traffic jam I have been part of in quite awhile. It was bumper to bumper – stop & go from Cemetery Rd all the way to the Broad St East exit I decided to exit on. That ended up costing me, though. Surprisingly, by the time I made it to Georgesville Rd and i-270 I could see that the freeway & exit were clear. That never happens!

I made it to Bolton by 5:12pm. On any other day I would’ve been there just before 5pm, I’d guess. But truthfully, the traffic cost only the frustration. I was certain that both Bob’s were stuck in it too. And they were. We were seemingly in no hurry. There wasn’t anyone immediately in front of us or behind. Just how we like it. We tee’d off just before 5:30pm.

I hit a typical first tee drive – poorly, but recovered and was on the 400 yard par 4 in three. I two putted to take a bogey – five. And I pared the next long par five. Setting me up for what I hoped would be a good round. The next hole had other ideas, however. I hit my tee shot into a pond about 175 yards out on the right. After dropping and hitting three my next shot went slightly of course and disappeared in a little dip about 100 yards in front of me. We all looked for my ball but couldn’t find it anywhere. We moved on believing that it must’ve went down an open 5 inch drain just off in the rough. I ended up taking a seven, having to sink a nice putt to salvage that. Shake it off!

I played reasonably well for the next five holes paring one more and bogeying the rest. I was hitting some very nice shots indeed. On hole number nine I hit a somewhat poor tee shot but certainly not one I couldn’t recover from. Sadly, though, I duffed my next shot, and then put my approach shot about 20 yards left of the green. Four on – three putt – seven! Ouch! And by the way, we played hole number 4 twice after allowing a fast moving twosome behind us to play through.

The sun was setting as we finished. In fact, it was difficult to judge the balls flight or distance on the last hole in the dusky conditions. I checked my Trooper clock once on board for home. It was only 7:30pm. I arrived home well before 8pm. Mindy and the kids were snuggled up in Bella’s bed watching a movie on her new TV/DVD combo. In the meantime, I went back downstairs to feed my overzealous hunger. Wanting something fast, but tasty, I decided to whip up some nachos with melted cheese. After nuking them, I topped with sour cream and some of my hot homemade salsa. They were unbelievably delicious.

Mindy came downstairs after putting the kids in bed. Taking that as my queue, I went up and tucked them in.
