ONJ
Back on track, I was conscious and downstairs facing the new day by 5:35am. And I was thrilled to find myself in sync with the plan again.
Without any further thought I tucked my toes under the sofa and began my routine. Ten minutes later I finished and bundled for my walk with Ykraps. Again, it was very cold, and wearing a hat, gloves, and thick coat were definitely required equipment for dealing with the cold.
I was excited to be back before 6:05am. In fact, I had coffee at Mindy’s bedside even before that. Mindy wanted lunch today, so I made tuna salad for the both of us. We had fried eggs & fruit for breakfast. She and the children left the house at 7:23am. And before heading to the shower, I did a nice long meditation in a quiet home.
For no good reason I decided to make today a jean day. I warmed the Trooper, and it started like it had a fully charged battery. It does! After some brief guitar and minor picking up of the kitchen, I left for work.
The morning went very fast. It went fast in part because of our weekly staff meeting. That went until 12:45pm. Upon my return I didn’t wait too long before heading out for a run. After scratching the “new running trail” itch yesterday, I didn’t feel like running my usual trail again today either. So, as I set out to run, I chose to take my alternate route. I ran Britton Rd to Davidson, and Davidson to Trueman. Then, I took that all the way to Hilliard Cemetery Rd. It was liberating to run a different route. After today’s run, there would be only nine runs standing between me and my ten year anniversary. It’s a feather in my cap – that’s all.
After my shower and ultimate return to work, I hurried through my packed salad since I had a 2pm meeting looming just minutes away. I didn’t get a chance to eat my tuna salad. That meeting took us up until 3:45pm. And when I returned to my office I had a VM from Mindy requesting I call her to schedule a dinner out. Because of this, I put my tuna and fruit back in the fridge for Thursday. I called Mindy and made plans to pick her up after work and head to Ding-Ho for some Chinese.
The remainder of the day, what little there was, went as planned. I left for home by 5:10pm. I called Mindy to let her know that I was on my way. She told me that she had already walked Ykraps and had coffee prepped for the following morning. I asked her to be at he door and ready when I pulled up. The reason being, Jim brings the kids home at 7pm sharp. That leaves us a very tight window to enjoy a quiet dinner. It’s very doable, however, as long as we’re efficient with our time. We were.
We were at Ding-Ho somewhere near 5:45pm. We were quickly seated. I already knew what I was ordering and so did Mindy. Our soup and appetizers arrived first, and we enjoyed them immensely. Minutes after we finished our main entrees arrived. They were piping hot and delicious. And just as we’ve come to expect, there was more than twice the amount we can consume in one sitting so we always leave with another meal for later.
We headed home directly. After arriving we both changed into our comfy clothes first thing. It wasn’t too long before the children were at the door ringing the door bell. Keeping with the times, Jacob asked if I would play with him seconds after his daddy departed. But Mindy quickly put the kabosh on that plan by rushing both kids upstairs to ready for bed.
The kids were in bed not too long after the initial rush. The Buckeyes were playing basketball against Purdue and I was watching some of that. Eventually I chose to watch only passively in favor of reading. Come 8pm Mindy changed the channel to watch what she thought would be American Idol. But for whatever reason, it didn’t come on until 9pm. While I read, she watched a show called Bones. At 9pm Idol came on. Again, I watched only passively, keeping a nose to my book. At the halfway point I put down my book to watch with Mindy. Olivia Newton John was a guest judge this evening. And she still looks damn good and doesn’t appear to have “overdone” herself. These days you see very few of the contestants that make the cut. Instead, we see the most entertaining rejects. It’s what sells!
After Idol we headed to bed in hopes of a restful and rewarding night’s sleep.

Salt & Battery
I was up and at my routine by 5:40am. And happily, by the time I finished phase one, it was still before 6:05am. I was officially back on track!
It was Tuesday and it was again brutally cold, at least by this winter’s standards. It was 12 degrees and windy when I was walking Ykraps. But believe me, I haven’t lost sight of the fact that during a normal winter, temperatures like these would qualify as nothing more than normal. Fact is, we’ve been spoiled with two exceptionally warm winters in a row. Now when the temperature dips below 20 degrees it's news.
I started the Trooper before leaving the house. And the slow cranking of the engine just reaffirmed what I already knew. I needed to get a new battery - stat!
As soon as I arrived at work I logged on to Sears.com and perused their battery selection. I knew that one could get cheaper batteries, but I have always been partial to Diehards. Yes, I too, fall for marketing! The proper SUV battery would cost me $100. Next, I called the Tuttle Sears to discuss and schedule an appointment. Rich seemed knowledgeable and kind. He told me that he could get me in and out quick and would charge only an additional $13 for install. That sounded good on such a cold day. While I had him, I asked if he could do my serpentine belt, too, since being informed twice during routine oil changes that it was dangerously worn. And I could see with my own eyes that it was. Ever since then it has been bugging me.
Rich willing agreed to do so it for what seemed reasonable but still slightly more than Jiffy Lube. But the convenience of having it all done at once was more attractive. However, not having the exact belt in stock, he’d have to get it in. He was upfront about not having the exact price, but he gave me ballpark figures that seemed reasonable based on my research.
Come my usual run time I dressed as usual in the gym. But instead of leaving for a run, I drove my Trooper to Sears. The plan all along was for me to drop the Trooper and run from there. The thought of blazing anew trail excited me. Rich implied that he could do all the work in about 50 minutes. That would be almost perfect!
When I arrived the place was all but barren. They addressed me right away. They prepared the written estimate and shared the charges with me. There were no surprises with the battery, but there were with the belt. The quoted “ballpark” price for the belt changed from being between $19 - 44 to being $73. Plus, the labor to put it on increased, too. That was suddenly $46 rather than the $30 or 40 he quoted. Nix the belt, I said. Can’t see paying $120 for a belt when it’s not broke. I’ll do it myself.
I let them know, too, that I had been out to NAPA’s webpage and verified the price. They were quoting me the same – $20 – 45 he originally did. He called to confirm and told me he was quoted $70. Not to argue, I told him that Jiffy Lube would do it for $69 total and in 10 minutes. If anything, I’d have them do it. Not wanting to be stuck with the belt, he offered to do it for $56, but he still hadn’t added the install fee. I asked again how much for labor and he once again quoted me $46. Sorry – no deal. I kindly asked that they simply do the battery.
I left for my run and Rich said that he should be done by the time I returned. I was looking forward to this running adventure. I headed down Tuttle Rd to Franz Rd then north to Rt. 161. That proved longer than I remembered. Plus, it was brutally cold with a very cold wind seemingly in my face on the out and in. It was very invigorating! Forty minutes later I returned to Sears. Inside I confirmed that they hadn’t even began on my Trooper. Bastards!
I was kind, however, and displayed great patience. No worries, I said. I’ll just head over to Cord Camera right next door and shop a little. I spent about twenty minutes in there. When I returned they had just pulled my car into the repair bay. Suddenly, I felt vulnerable. The thought occurred to me that they might take advantage of me. The work took a very long time. I had been there now a total of 1.75 hrs. Finally, after sitting in the waiting room perusing their tool catalog, they finished (about 15 minutes later) and I was on my way back to work.
Reviewing the ordeal, I was happy that I didn’t allow procrastination to overcome me and find myself stranded somewhere with a bum battery. I should be good to go for about 5 years. I made the original battery last 6.5 years. However, the belt thing still loomed in the back of my mind. So, once back at work, I called Jiffy Lube to confirm their price and whether they would do it outside of a routine oil change. Yes. $69 and done in ten minutes. I hung up from that call feeling good about my decision. I’ll stop in there at my convenience over the next week or so to ‘get ‘er done’.
The rest of my work day was uneventful after all of that. I worked hard until I left for the day.
Mindy had dinner on the stove when I arrived home. She made cream of chicken with broccoli casserole. I walked Ykraps as soon as I unloaded my gear. It was another chilly walk.
Dinner was exceptionally good. Between the two of us, we managed to eat almost the entire 9X12” casserole. The kids, as you might’ve already guessed, had alternative entrees. After dinner I agreed to once again play with Jacoby. We played in the basement for almost one hour. He plays rather rough. Mindy called the kids upstairs around 7:15pm. That was my cue to get busy on my blog.
In email, I received word back from Timberline with the contract corrections requested along with a humorous apology. I was bent on getting that done this week. Mindy addressed getting the kids ready for bed almost entirely on her own, although I did deliver some water and do the final tuck and hug for each. Afterwards, Mindy pretty much readied herself for bed. I grabbed my book and plopped into the overstuffed family room chair. I read for a solid hour or more enjoying a bag of popcorn to boot. Mindy came in to see if I was ready for bed around 10pm. She wanted some attention. I was equally tired so we went to bed.

Burr Lives
It was 5:50am when I forced myself out bed. Recently, it seems that my body’s winning the battle over my mind. I was 20 minutes off queue. And to add even more to the delay, I didn’t have coffee in the making having gone to bed the night before without tending to the matter. But I quickly righted that wrong. That ate another three minutes. But int he end, all that really meant was that I needed to move a bit swifter through my morning routine and with a mind towards the clock. I kindly obeyed.
It wasn’t long before Ykraps and I were bundled warmly for our morning walk. I noticed it being 6:06am as we headed out the door. Uncharacteristically, we walked towards the east. I allowed Ykraps to lead. I encouraged him to make quick work of his business to help cut into our time deficit and to escape the morning chill. He was most cooperative.
After hanging up my coat, gloves, and hat it was already 6:18am. I was 13 minutes behind the desired schedule. And just as I assumed, Mindy was already getting in the shower when I delivered the morning’s coffee. Better late than never!
Back downstairs I read the Daily OM, checked the morning’s Yahoo headlines, and did a short meditation. Mindy reminded me before going to bed that she needed/wanted only fruit on Monday. That would happily shave a few minutes off of my food prep time. In fact, I made up the entire deficit during food prep. Breakfast was served just after 7am – just like always. Today I whipped up fried non-embryonic chicken eggs.
Mindy bought more Toaster Strudels over the weekend to appease Jacoby. She bought cinnamon roll flavored. And while that sounded better than the blueberry and the strawberry, Jacob threw a mini fit when the cinnamon roll strudel was served. He wanted his strawberry strudel. Wah! Bella chose cheese – peanut butter crackers to-go. They were all out the door by 7:22am.
Before heading to the shower, I chose to meditate in total peace. I spent another ten solid minutes doing so. It was worth the time spent. I continued with my daily preparation only in a much better place mentally.
I loaded my gear and warmed the Trooper five minutes before leaving. I took a mental note about getting a new battery for the Trooper after another somewhat sluggish start. The battery is original equipment – 6.5 years old, and I don’t want to push the envelope too far. I really thought I should’ve replaced it last winter. I’m very fortunate.
I left for work knowingly late. It was 8:15am when I left the house. I was comfortable, however, arriving by 8:30am. It was like any Monday at work – quiet and serious. It’s often a challenge making the transition from weekend mode to work. The challenge was met, and soon I was completely immersed in my work. There was plenty to do. With everything going on, the morning went very quickly. The one on one scheduled with my boss got moved to late afternoon to make way for another meeting he had to attend. That happens often. No worries!
Later than late, it was 1:15 by the time I made to the gym. And it was cold. It was only 20 degrees with a stiff SW breeze. Because of its direction, I was hopeful that it might be warmer than the NW breeze so typical of this time of year, but it wasn’t. It was cold! Out the door I wished I had brought flannel boxers for that added layer over me private parts. Note to self!
I knew that once I hit the halfway point that the rest would be a cinch. That was all the motivation I needed to master the brutal chill. The run back was easy. I even had to vent a little. The hot shower felt very good slapping against my cold body, yet I still kept the shower short. I was eager to get back to my office and eat my packed lunch.
I ate my lunch while doing a little work. It was twenty minutes shy of meeting time. I used this time to review our condo contract for Mt Hood. I found yet another mistake and sent an email requesting the verbiage be changed. They mistakenly added an extra zero to the base rental cost. And even though the total charge was correct below, I didn’t want to sign my name to anything that far off. Shame on me if I did. That’s why it’s called a contract.
I left for my boss’ office just a minute after 3pm. We discussed a number of things: interviewing, hiring, processes, and the Philippines. I've expressed an interest in doing a temporary assignment there but wanted more information. Our meeting carried on for almost 1.5 hours due in part to two relevant visitors.
By the time I was back at my desk I had just enough time to tie up a few loose ends before departing. I left at 5:10pm. My goal was to stop at Home Depot to price out our closet shelving project. I was there for about 30 minutes making sure they had all the pieces & parts as well as getting prices. It looks like it will be about a $125 project. Not too terrible!
It wasn’t long before I was headed home eager to get there and get warm. Via cell, Mindy mentioned that dinner was all but ready. She was making bunless burgers, brussel sprouts, and salad. The kids were having something more kid-like. Bella was having leftover pizza and Jacob, some Mexican microwave meal. Not wanting to relax before my work was done, I leashed up Ykraps for a walk as soon as I got home. Another bone chilling walk!
Back in the door, dinner smelt terrific. It must have been the red onions that were so odorous. Mindy fried Black Angus burgers and topped them with sautéed red onions, and then she capped that with mounds of cheese. They were uncommonly delicious! As we ate, Jacob asked if I would play with him after dinner. I gave him the standard answer; as soon as your mother gets off her derriere and does these daggone supper dishes. :) O.K., that’s not even true. I told him that I’d play with him after we finished cleaning up. Mindy managed his timetable by declaring a 7:30pm bedtime, and that included the read and tuck.
It was nearly 6:45pm when we finished cleaning up. I hurried upstairs to change into my PJ’s before our play time. We played some basketball and then a game of knee football. The rules for the football game are getting out of hand. He won 49-48. ;)
Mindy called Jacob upstairs by 7:10pm. I took that as my queue to update my blog. Sometime after 7:30pm I was asked to do the tuck-in honors. I willing did.
Bella went right to sleep. Jacob, uncharacteristically, didn’t. He called for his mother a number of times sharing his inability to fall asleep. That must be a scary thing for him. He’s usually out cold in less than three minutes – no kidding!
While Mindy read my long winded Saturday blog, I began reading my book. She came in the family room around 8:50 and excused herself for an early bedtime. I told her that I’d be up soon. I continued reading for a while longer. Come 9:15pm I headed up to bed eager to get a good night’s sleep myself.

Chicken Little
1) Chicken Embryo
2) I named him 'Chicken Little'
3) Edgar Winter - Shock Treatment
4) Tyler - the ugly dog
5) Gloria dancing to some song I had never heard
We both slept well, but Mindy was up and downstairs much earlier than me. My best guess is that she was up somewhere near 8:30. I slept a half hour longer. It was just after 9am when I found my way to the kitchen. Mindy already had coffee on the make, so I selfishly began my morning exercise routine.
It didn’t take me long to work through my exercises. I was done in less than ten minutes. By 9:15am, I was heading out for a walk with Ykraps. And just like Sunday last, it was snowing, albeit lightly. It was cold again, too. I could tell that the temperature was below 20 degrees.
Finding myself back inside for coffee seemed like a real treat. Although it was 9:30, Mindy still wasn’t certain if she was going to church. My guess was that she wasn’t. Soon, however, it was clear. She wasn't. It must have been around 10:15 when she finally declared, and in celebration I readied and left for a run. Mindy promised to have some eggs ready upon my return.
The snow came down hard during my run. At times my black running gear was completely blanketed in white. I wisely decided to restrict my run to the confines of the subdivision.
The snow let up just as I finished. Before going inside I grabbed one of my cheap plastic snow shovels to remove the ½” of snow from the drive and walks. It didn’t take long. Again, if I don’t shovel, even the smallest amount, one can slide immediately after backing out of the garage and onto the sloping drive. It wasn’t worth the risk.
Mindy beckoned for my attention just as I was finishing up. She said she had something she wanted to show me inside. She reported finding a chicken in one of the many eggs she had cracked. I, of course, was skeptical. But sure enough, there swimming amongst the scrambled egg batter was an embryonic chicken. It looked more like a piece of used chewing gum, but it didn’t take much imagination to see the beginnings of a chicken. I immediately went to the PC to learn more about such a find.
Sure enough, on line I found lots of info regarding embryonic chickens. Although, I didn’t find any detail regarding the odds of finding one in a “farm fresh chicken egg” meant for human consumption. However, she bought the eggs at Wal-Mart, and we all know that they're not looking to build a reputation on quality. By the looks of my initial research, this embryo was about ten days old. At some point, assuming that life begins at conception, this little chicken was probably looking forward to life on a farm, perhaps waking his/her humans at sunrise, or possibly even starring in a cartoon. At a minimum, he/she would certainly have had a chance to cross the proverbial road only to have his/her intentions questioned. Instead, one of the Walton boys plucked him from his mothers nest and threw him in an egg cartoon with eleven other sterile eggs. The journey which culminated in a bumpy ride to my house probably killed him/her.
I came to the conclusion that it was actually edible and gave careful consideration to doing so, but Mindy would have nothing of it.. Ultimately, I decided it would be better as a science project. I took a number of photos in various poses then placed it in a zip lock baggie for safe keeping.
Meanwhile, Mindy whipped up an entirely new batch of eggs. She was determined not to eat the white and yoke from which he/she came. She made southwestern omelets. They were ready in no time at all. She got out sour cream and salsa to top them off. While enjoying mine, I stumbled upon another embryo lurking amongst the onions and tomatoes. Mindy could eat no more despite my insistence that it was simply chicken. We moved on.
Mindy decided that her free day would be spent shopping for that still elusive little black dress. I would stay home, clean, and relax. She reported that Jim Manken would be bringing the kids home at 2:30pm instead of the usual 3:00pm. While she was gone, I vacuumed the entire downstairs including the playroom in the basement (changed out the overstuffed bag, too). In addition, I folded a load of towels, measured for our master closet overhaul, and watered all of the house plants. While working away, I listened to some music not so recent to my ears. I listened to Edgar Winter’s, Shock Treatment & Elton John’s, Love Songs.
The afternoon passed in a jiffy. Just after 2:30pm, Jim Manken pulled up with the kids. And just as I was opening the front door to let everyone in, Mindy pulled up, too. Good timing! Jim didn’t stay long. He wasn’t gone one minute before Jacob asked me to play with him. We went to the basement to play some hockey, basketball, and then some football. I asked Mindy to call when I needed to get a shower. She called me around 3:10pm. After a quick shower and jumping into my jeans and sweater, we loaded the Trooper destined for Gloria’s. I remembered to grab my volt meter so I could troubleshoot her failing garage door opener.
We arrived at Gloria’s before anyone else. After a quick greeting, I took some tools to the garage to investigate the trouble. I determined and validated that the battery was definitely being prematurely drained. For that to be the case, something had to be shorted within the opener and most likely within the exterior keypad since it is exposed to the brutal elements. I wasn’t prepared to tear that apart, and didn’t. Besides, it was getting colder by the minute. My fingers were frozen. I decided that I'd work on it further on a warmer day.
Back inside, others began arriving. Mindy asked me to take a look at her mother’s oven since it didn’t seem to be working. We checked the breaker and it was fine. We later learned that the top burners & broiler were operative, so it couldn't be the breaker. On closer inspection, I could see that the heating element was blown. It was charred and had a decent size hole in it. I asked that she get me the model number so that I could find one online. Mindy’s sister, Jody, talked to hubby Larry, who asked that I give her the model number so he could pick one up at his father’s old parts depot. Just before leaving, I did.
Everyone was present minus Larry, Todd, Missy, and Mia. Too, we met Julie’s new girlfriend, Tara, and her lil’ dog. His name is Toto! O.K., I’m kidding. This dog was way uglier than Toto. His real name is Tyler, and he’s a miniature greyhound. Next to me, he might have the longest nose this side of the Persian Gulf. And by the way, Tara’s very cute too!
Because Gloria’s oven was on the fritz, there would be no roasted chicken as planned. Instead, Gloria had to recover the meat and place it back in the freezer. And since Jody had to take daughter Lindy to work at Flyer’s Pizza, we decided to have their pizza for dinner.
It wasn’t long before Jody was back with the four pies. And just because the oven wasn’t working didn’t mean that we didn’t have chicken dinner sides. We still had mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, and stuffing. I don’t know that I’ve ever had such sides with pizza, but it was all very good! For dessert, Mindy brought Bella’s adoption day cake. But before partaking in all of its sugar, we sang happy adoption day. Bella was quite pleased. We are blessed to have each of our lives touched by such an angel – and a loud one at that!
We left just after 7pm. Just before hand, Mindy whispered in my ear that daughter Ashley would be at our house when we arrived home. She called Mindy earlier in some sort of despair. My three drama queens!
Once at home we all hurried inside to escape the mounting cold. I had the fun task of walking Ykraps. I bundled accordingly, which rendered the cold an non-factor. Finally, back inside, and after giving quick hugs to Ash and Olivia, I rushed upstairs to change into my comfy jammies. Now I was ready to hold Olivia. She seems to be gaining weight very quickly. She’s getting rounder by the day, but still very, very beautiful!
After tucking Jacob and Bella into bed I returned downstairs to feed Olivia. I see now why she’s gaining so much weight. She drank a 6 ounce bottle in a matter of five minutes. I think it’s time to move onto solid foods – perhaps even steak!
Before they left, we briefly discussed Ashley’s recent quest to enter “beauty school” and her pursuit of financial aid. She indicated that she was awaiting word back on her FAFSA password and PIN. That’s a familiar story, I thought. I gave a wink and a nod to Mindy since I had projected she’d tell me that. I know my daughters all to well.
After Ashley departed, Mindy and I watched some Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. Mindy, however, grew tired before its end and went to bed. I stayed up and read while passively watching the rest. I went to be at 10:40pm. Mindy was numb to the world.

The Elusive Little Black Dress
1) Could this be the one?
I wondered while I slept if I would wake with a headache. After all, four beers and not getting to sleep until after 1am, it was a good bet. However, I was smart enough to take two Advil just before jumping in bed.
I woke initially around 6am and didn’t feel that great. I slept a couple hours longer only to wake feeling fine. In fear of wasting away a perfectly good morning, I leaped to my feet at 8am sharp ready to begin my day. Mindy acknowledged my rising but opted to sleep a little longer.
I closed the bedroom door behind me in hopes of shielding her from any noise that have might otherwise woke her. I put on some coffee and then jumped head first into my morning exercise routine. I felt a little sluggish – almost assuredly from the Friday night beers.
I managed through my workout then bundled up for a walk with Ykraps. It wasn’t nearly as cold as I thought it might be. In fact, it felt mild in contrast to the last few mornings. Upon our return and a quick check of the weather, today looked to be a fluke warm-up that would be sandwiched between another dramatic cold snap.
Even though rain was forecasted, Bob was going skiing and invited us to go along. But the potential for rain and the desire to have a “do nothing” day were a greater pull on our psyche. For the next 1.5 hours I sat at the PC with coffee in hand updating my Friday blog.
Mindy didn’t get out of bed until sometime between 10-10:30am. I was just prepping to run when she came downstairs. We chatted briefly before I departed, including confirming that we weren’t going skiing. She asked if I wanted breakfast, and if so, what. She agreed to make bacon and pancakes while I ran.
I took the outer loop this morning putting myself in traffic’s way for the better part of it. However, I was careful to venture deep into the easement as cars approached. I was back just after 11am. The smell of maple bacon and pancakes encompassed the entire home. It smelt wonderful, and I was very hungry! It wasn’t long before we were eating at the island counter.
While eating we discussed our day and what we hoped to accomplish aside from rest. I wanted to visit the mall to get a new pair of running shoes. Mindy wanted to look for a new special occasions dress along with getting Bella an adoption day cake and gift.
The day was moving fairly fast. It was already afternoon. I took a shower first while Mindy played on the PC. While Mindy showered, I played guitar and took care of a few other miscellaneous deeds. We left for Tuttle around 12:30-1pm.
At the mall, we parked by Macy’s. And since we entered by the juniors dress section, Mindy looked at dresses right out of the shoot. We spent the next hour or more looking at, and trying on dresses. We found some really pretty ones, but each ended up not being the one for this reason or that.
Finally, she threw in the towel and we made our way towards the Finish Line. But we had to cut through the Men’s department at Macy’s along the way, where I looked briefly at jeans but only for a few minutes. We were at the Finish Line in no time at all.
While I shopped running shoes, Mindy looked at Buckeye jersey’s for Jacoby. I found what I needed quickly. The same running shoes I have right now were on sale for $59, plus I had a $10 off coupon. As long as they had my size, I was in business. And besides, it was too early to consider white running shoes. They’d just get sloppy dirty over the next two months. Black holds up well in wet and wintry conditions.
They had my size, so I was set. I went to find Mindy. She found a #10 Buckeye jersey for Jacoby. He’s wanted one for a long time. We proceeded to checkout. Our total was $99.98, and my coupon was $10 off of a $50 purchase, or $15 off a $100 purchase. The young lady was nice enough to charge me the extra $.02 to allow me to use the $15 off coupon. No prompting either!
After buying the shoes we found our way to Ruby Tuesday’s. Mindy was feeling “protein deprived”, and I was hungry too. We both ordered the same thing – The Smokehouse burger. It was very good but also very messy. We were there about 45 minutes. After leaving there I suggested we visit the Tuttle furniture stores on Britton Rd. We stopped in all four. We stopped in Sofa Express, Kittles, Macys, and Front Room Furnishings. Above all else, we saw lots of nasty looking furniture, and very few pieces we both liked. We learned that our tastes differ significantly, especially when it comes to accessorizing (art).
Somehow, though, I know that in the end we’ll come to agreement.
It was hard to believe but it was already just short of 5pm. We headed home. I was tired and thought that I might read & nap. Mindy suggested going tanning, dress shopping, and to Kroger to get Bella’s cake and a few missed grocery items. I walked Ykraps before she left. Once we were back, Mindy called the neighbors, Pat & Lisa to invite them over later. She didn’t get an answer so she left a VM.
I sat down at the PC to work on my 2006 highlights. With beer in hand, I got to writing. Last visited, I left off in August. I picked up right where I left off and got the entire year, minus December in draft. I worked on it much longer than I originally wanted. Next thing I knew, Mindy was home. So much for my reading and nap!
Mindy informed me that she heard back from the Shultz’s and that they’d be stopping by sometime after 7:30pm. It was 6:45pm. Where did our free day go? We figured we’d have a simple gathering with the neighbors – no laborious appetizers. We’d simply order a pizza after they arrived.
It wasn’t long before they were at our door. And even though they live only three houses away, they drove! We all got a big laugh out of that. Alena, their 10 year old daughter, came along too. She’s so grown up and participated in a lot of our conversation. Lisa brought their new laptop to keep her somewhat entertained. We never did get around to cards or a movie. We sat and talked. Something each of us are very good at. :)
Come 10:30pm, the Shultz’s left. We agreed to do it again some time soon. I had forgotten about the Buckeye basketball game, but remembered after they left. There were just a few minutes left when I joined. We blew a 20 point lead in the second half, but squeaked out a two point victory.
Mindy was tired and went to bed after the game and just a few minutes into Mad TV. I stayed up a little longer only to dose while watching TV. Twenty minutes later I was in bed, too. Unlike normal, Mindy didn’t budge! She was out cold.

A Quiet Mind
Today I was sent one of those silly emails asking all sorts of personal questions such as my favorite food, where I was born, and what my favorite day of the week is. Well my favorite day of the week is and has always been Friday. Friday's represent the end of one thing yet the birth of something better. What ends is the grueling work week whether you like your job or not. What begins is an opportunity to unwind, retool, and simply be yourself.
Friday morning I rose at 5:35am after a very satisfying 8 hours of sleep. It turns out that Mindy coaxing me to bed early worked wonders preparing me for a the weekend. After al, who wants to head into the weekend exhausted? Feeling back in the game, I pushed through my morning exercises like a man on a mission. I was done so early that even Ykraps wasn't quite ready for our morning walk. He wanted to wait a few minutes but I insisted we be out the door by 5:50am. Ultimately, I imposed my will.
"We walked so fast that time and youth at last ran out. We never stopped to think what our lives were all about.. And now, all that's is left is Yesterday when I was young." Holy crap! Where'd that come from? We were back inside where I quickly removed my coat., gloves, and hat. A glance at the stove top clock revealed 6:02am. Goal met!
I moved swiftly towards the cupboard housing our coffee mugs where I quickly grabbed two. I pulled all of the making for our fru-fru coffee out of the fridge and got busy. Once again, I delivered Mindy's to her bedside.
Back downstairs the house was quiet save for the "soundscapes" oozing softly from the stereo. Very nice! I read the Daily OM, some email, and then took to meditation. I recently changed my morning mantra in a effort to more easily quiet my mind. Admittedly, I have had some difficulty finding that peaceful space for the last couple of months. Talking to those that meditate, you'll likely hear countless ways to get there. No one way is best. Rather, it's whatever works for you. For me, simply repeating my ultimate goal - quiet ... mind - is working fabulously. In between those two words comes the calm. These cluttered thoughts that swirl endlessly in my mind are often based on fears or projections of a future event, or a repeat of something that occurred in the recent past that perhaps I wished had gone differently. In either case, it's such a waste of precious energy, and if nothing else, a day killer. Left alone, these thoughts will negatively shape my day and all of my encounters. On the other hand, finding that peace first thing in the morning has life altering potential. Each encounter from that point forward starts from a positive, peaceful, & happy beginning. It's that simple!
Onward! It was Friday so there was an extra skip in my giddyup. It was 6:30am. I prepared lunch for Mindy and I. And with a bit of a twist, I made Mindy sliced turkey over a bed of lettuce along with several chunks of cheese - my usual lunch. For myself, I packed the back half of my gyro sub leftover from Wednesday's dinner at the Big Fat Greek Cuisina. For breakfast I made the usual scrambled eggs with cut fruit. And when Jacoby came down he ordered his favorite - a toaster strudel. Bella is often hit or miss with breakfast. I don't recall her eating this morning. She did profess not wanting to spend the weekend with her daddy. instead, she insisted on staying home with us. She, somewhat matter of factly, told Mindy not to bother packing her overnight bag because she wasn't going. ... Really?
They left the house at their usual time - maybe a few minutes late. Like always, I headed for the shower. I was back downstairs doing final prep by 7:45am. I started & loaded the Trooper then returned to the house to grab my personal electronics and to play some guitar. I left for work at 7:55am.
Gas, I noticed, was down a few pennies passing by Thornton's. I didn't stop, though I do need to fill-up soon. I arrived to work shortly after 8am. I detected slightly warmer morning air as I made my way from the parking lot to the building. Indeed a warming trend is in our immediate future, albeit slight. On the fifth floor and into my center and ultimately my office, I unpacked my lunch and loaded it into my work fridge cooler. I grabbed my water pitcher then made my way to the ice machine and fridge. As I settled a my desk, I think I let out the audible sigh, Ahh - It's Friday!
Everyone was in a good mood and the work load was tame compared to most Friday's. The morning went by quick as I kept myself very busy. I left for a run at 12:50pm. The temperature was hovering around 28 degrees and the sun was shining. And there was the ever present NW breeze blowing at about 10 mph. I dressed accordingly, and once again used my zippers to regulate my body heat. I never did remove my gloves today. I enjoyed a very peaceful run - no trauma to mull over today. Nope, just peaceful thoughts!
After an exceptionally hot shower I was back at my desk with lunch in hand and ready to eat. I really enjoyed that gyro sub along with my salad and fruit. It was a nice change of pace. To further my relaxation, I let some music whirl on my hard drive. I listened to Jimmy Jenkins, Pink Floyd, & David Gilmour. I was determined to have a calm afternoon despite the air about me.
I talked with Mindy sometime between 3-4pm. She was at Applebee's with her teacher peeps I assumed having drinks and appetizers. She seemed to be in good spirits and mentioned feeling as good as she's felt all week. We were both looking forward to a quiet & kidless weekend.
I buttoned up my work week and headed out the office door at 5:30pm. I took special notice of the lengthening & lingering day light . That makes me happy! I pulled away choosing not to make any calls but instead to simply enjoy a peaceful drive home.
I arrived home around 5:45pm. The house was quiet, and the kids were gone. Mindy was milling around in the kitchen with a Friday smile on her face. We walked Ykraps together all while talking about the silly '40 question' email she sent me earlier in the day. She never guessed me to reply, but I did. Back at home we briefly discussed our timing for Barleys as well as a few other logistics for our coming trip. Mindy's very good about taking care of details, which relieves me of further stress. I like that!
She asked if I wanted a beer. I did not. Instead, I requested some coffee, which was leftover from this morning, but still warm in our new stainless steel carafe. It hit the spot! After enjoying the coffee I did a little reading while Mindy primped for an evening out. I read until 7:15pm when I headed upstairs to do some quick primping of my own. We left for Barleys just after 7:30pm.
We arrived at Barleys to find a full lot, which doesn't always equate to a full bar. But tonight the bar was packed, and packed with lots of unfamiliar faces. We did, however, encounter our friend Steve sitting at his usual corner seat. We talked with him for quite a while and ended up making some new friends, although I can't readily recall their names. I do remember that he graduated from OSU, lived in Seattle, moved back to CMH, and was heading to Vegas for a Super Bowl party next week. We had lots of speaking points.
Just as they left and sacrificed their seats, Bob arrived, but without Mary Ann. We're beginning to wonder if she left him. I mean, we haven't seen her in weeks. Even though he speaks as if she's still around, he could just be fooling us. Truthfully, she was at work. Her hours have changed and I think she works until 9pm. Ahh the life of a pharmacist! She sells pills down by the seashore.
As the evening wore on, familiar faces began to surface. Later, Josh, Rick, Rebecca, and Dan showed up, and so did Thad and Monica. Monica shared a little of her family heritage - being Latvian - as well as a funny story about her dad giving his car to a couple of teenage Latvian girls selling books in their neighborhood. Thad and I got a huge laugh at Mindy's expense when she suggested that he might want to read this success story about an artist/illustrator to his high school art students. In fact, just thinking about it now is making me chuckle!
We hadn't seen Jan, the railroad dude in quite some time. He stopped in along with another railroad dude named Tim, who was a Barleys first timer (they didn't know each other and didn't come together). He just moved here from Georgia. I ate a quesadilla and Mindy had a southwestern salad. Over the course of the evening,I had four beers - mostly IPA's. Mindy had two glasses of wine. Brother Tommy was supposed to show but didn't. We discussed some details surrounding our ski trip with Bob, and we ended up leaving at the same time. By the time we left only one patron remained, Tim, our new friend from Georgia.
We headed home and quickly got ourselves ready for bed. Good night waxing gibbous moon!

11 months till XMAS
What does Santa Claus do for
the eleven months leading up to Xmas?
He drinks beer at Barleys off the firkin, of course!!
Perhaps a new habit is forming. Once again, I didn’t find myself out of bed until almost 5:45am. It seems that my sleep requirements are changing, especially over the last few months. It used to be, if got between 6.75 & 7.25 hrs I woke feeling more than rested. Of late, that’s changed to 7.5 to 8 hrs. Is it age? Is it Mindy? Hmmm. What’s clear is that I get my sleep on a more consistent basis these days, so one would naturally assume the opposite to be true.
On with my day. Without much thought, I pushed through my morning calisthenics and was out the door with Ykraps by 6:05am. I was bundled snuggly leaving the elements not a chance in hell of dragging me down. The local weather forecasters had intimated snow overnight but there was nothing more than a few sparsely spaced flying flurries.
After returning home, I made two cups of coffee; one was for Mindy, and the other for was me. I sat hers on the lingerie dresser since once again, she was already up and in the shower – another byproduct of my sleeping a bit late.
Downstairs I read some email, the Daily OM, and checked sports scores from the night before. The Buckeyes won their game against Northwestern, but not by nearly as much as last week when they beat them by 32 points. Also, word from friend Bob was that his dad was seemingly out of the woods from his recent fall but did suffer a broken hip.
I started making lunch bent on having sliced turkey. But after getting out the turkey I realized that it was beginning to spoil prematurely. Not wanting to risk getting sick, I threw it out. So, in lieu of turkey, I made tuna salad again. I made some for Mindy, too. She always appreciates it.
Fried eggs were on the breakfast menu - Mindy one and me two. Jacob had his usual toaster strudel. Bella settled for a pack of peanut butter on cheese crackers that she could easily take along on the morning commute.
They all left a little late – about 7:25am. After they were gone I did my shower and got dressed in all of about 15 minutes. I left for work by 7:50am. I first went by the neighbor’s house to drop mail that was mistakenly placed in our mailbox. They looked like important tax documents that would’ve been otherwise missed. Onward towards work. Along the way, I was sad to see that gas prices had risen $.18 overnight.
I arrived at work by 8:10am. The morning promised to be busy, my time taken up mostly with several interviews. The interviews went well past 11am. By the time I got settled in my office and everything else under control, it was run time. The temperature was only 23 degrees and according to the AOL weather bug, stiff winds blowing out of the N – N/W. I bundled accordingly and headed out feeling physically better than recent days.
The extra chill was almost ideal for my attire meaning that I didn’t over heat much at all on the return, although I did remove my gloves at the three mile marker. I often say the key to running warmth is tied to the ears and hands. One easy way to moderate is to remove one or the other, and for me it’s always gloves first.
I was back in my office by 2pm ready to eat and carry on with all of my afternoon activities. I returned a VM left by Mindy to discuss some logistics surrounding our coming ski trip. She also reminded me that she was stopping at the grocery after school this evening. I had nothing else to add to our big list.
I left the office at 5:10pm, which is just about my usual departure time. A call to Mindy revealed that she wasn’t yet home from the grocery but in transit. She arrived home a few minutes before me, and long enough to get most of the groceries carried in before I pulled up. Perfect! :)
I casually unloaded my gear and tossed my running clothes into the dryer. I leashed up Ykraps and headed out for our evening walk. I remembered to grab a new “poop” sack, too. Mindy began making dinner while we walked. We were all having leftovers or hot dogs. I had leftover chili & cornbread – the last of it. It was still very tasty.
After dinner Jacob guilted me into playing another game of nerf basketball. He said that I never play with him and that I’m always busy with work. Ouch! We played until Mindy called him for a bath. Some how or another, he earned himself three wacks with the wooden spoon. I guess he threatened Bella with bodily harm while in the tub and had been a bit lippy with both Mindy and I. Overall, he’s a very dear boy, but tends to allow his elevated levels of testosterone to drive his thinking and actions from time to time.
A few minutes after his wacks, I visited him in his room where I gave him a short pep talk. He was otherwise upset. After our talk we watched a few minutes of an ESPN basketball game together. He calmed nicely. I returned downstairs where I updated my blog. It was only 8pm but I thought I heard Mindy going to bed. I headed up to check. Sure enough, she was. She reported being exhausted. I laid down with her for a spell and exchanged back rubs with a wooden knot removal tool. By 9pm I was sleepy too. I went back downstairs to secure the house, get some water, and turn off lights. We were both sound asleep before 9:30pm.

Saganaki Opa
1) Saganaki
2) Mindy's latest batch of flowers posing pretty
It took a little self-prodding to get up and out of bed this morning, but once up I felt just fine. For whatever reason, I have been waking somewhere between 4 and 5am the past few days feeling well rested. However, I go back to sleep for one last blast only to wake past my desired rise time of 5:30am.
I was downstairs face to face with the stovetop clock at 5:48am. After choking down a horse pill (vitamin), I wasted little time getting my exercise routine underway. The sit-ups were tough again today, but I managed through. My energy reserves were running low after I finished the entire routine. I was happy to be done.
Ykraps and I bundled up well for our walk. For whatever reason, he didn’t seem to care for wearing the toboggan and tried desperately to shake it off, but quite frankly, I don’t care. I pay the damn vet bills! He wore the damn hat.
Back inside I poured two cups of coffee. I made Mindy’s just like she likes it then took it upstairs. Minutes later I returned to the kitchen to enjoy my own cup. For our lunch I made tuna salad. For breakfast I whipped up some scrambled eggs and fruit. Jacob had his new love, a toaster pastry. The few minutes we spent together went quickly, just like always. Mindy and the kids were out of the house a few minutes later than usual - about 7:23am.
I spent the next few quiet moments showering and dressing for work. After loading and warming the Trooper, I departed for work sometime near 7:50am. I took our December/ January electric bill with me to work so that I could debate the meter reading, which was off by more than 1000 KWHs in their favor. After getting settled in, I called AEP. I got right through to a live body after only one button push. That in and of itself was a refreshing change. The young woman who took my call was polite and efficient, and was more than happy to adjust my account. She asked for the current reading that I took this morning and then quickly returned with a new billable amount, which she said would come to my home via a new revised statement. Less than five minutes later, that was history. Incidentally, the errant electric bill was for $175!
I spent more time setting up Thursday interviews along with my usual workload. The first half of my day went fast. I left for a run just before 1pm. It was around 28 degrees with a 7mph breeze blowing in from the NW ( I know I sound like a broken record). The sun was out and I took notice of its position moving noticeably higher in the southern sky. Today was the 33rd day after the solstice. There are only 56 more days until the spring equinox, and eleven days from now winter will be half over! I finished my run in a pretty good sweat. I was both happy and winded at its conclusion.
After a hot shower I felt like a million dollars. I couldn't wait to get back to my office and eat my lunch. The afternoon went by in the blink of an eye. It seemed the next time I glanced up at the clock 5:00pm was upon me. Mindy and I had already made loose plans to meet at the Big Fat Greek Cuisina for dinner. She was already up north off Sawmill Rd for an appointment. I called Mindy just as I left the office to firm our plans. She was just leaving her appointment. My office is pretty darn close to the Greek Cuisina, so I naturally beat her there.
It wasn't very crowded at all. But then again, I didn't expect it to be. Mindy arrived a few minutes later and we were quickly seated. We met Maria, who we later learned was the daughter of the owner. She was very sweet, pretty, and animated. Her and Mindy bonded after talking about there common friend, Rene, who teaches with Mindy. They brought us some pita bread and some very tasty spread made with vinegar, olives, and other spices. We then ordered our entrees. Mindy ordered the grouper dinner and I ordered a gyro submarine. As an appetizer, we ordered some Saganaki Opa, a highly recommended flaming cheese appetizer. It was very rich and tangy cheese. I was sure that Mindy wouldn't like it given that she's such a fan of mild cheeses, at least judging by our cheese selection at home. We couldn't finish it.
Our food arrived minutes later. Both of us were happy with our food and the very attentive service. After we finished and got our leftovers boxed up we asked for a check. Maria came back by our table with a big piece of cake which she quipped was on her and fat free. Even though both of us were stuffed, we dug into the cake. It was very good. Just as we finished the last bite Maria came by again to tell us that it was only fat free because we didn't have to pay for the fat! Cute!
It was nice getting out for dinner. We hadn't been out for a mid-week dinner in two weeks, or since Ding-Ho. We arrived home just before Jim brought the kids home. The kids seemed happy to be home, and after Jim left, Jacob and I played nerf basketball in the basement for about twenty minutes. We were celebrating Jacob's outstanding report card. After the basketball, Jacob was called upstairs to ready for bed. I took that as my queue to update my blog. Even after tucking in the children I continued working on my blog until I had it current. That meant I missed the first 40 minutes of American Idol. The were in New York City this week, and it was over the top entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed the auditions. At the shows conclusion we went to bed pretty much together.

State of the Union
I was up and downstairs by 5:40am. I got almost 7.5 hours sleep but still felt a little tired. I think it's the cold temps and dark skies.
I pushed through my exercises rather quickly eventhough my body really didn't want to do them. But doing this every single day for almost ten years, one encounters days like this. I just suck it up and do it anyhow!
It wasn’t long before I was bundled up in my parka, hat, and gloves with Ykraps tethered on a 16’ retractable leash. We walked through the remnants of the Sunday snow which by now was almost entirely gone from the walks, save for the bridge over the stream.
We were back by 6:05am – my normal return time. I know all’s right with the world when I am pouring coffee at or before 6:05am.
After delivering Mindy’s coffee, I started phase II of the routine – read, meditate, and food prep. Mindy reminded me not to pack her lunch since I guess her and friends were doing Mitchell’s for lunch (and she wonders why I am always complaining about her high dollar lunches). I had breakfast on the table by 7:00am. Mindy passed on morning eggs today, too, instead opting only for fruit.
Mindy and the kids departed at their usual time. I did my shower and dressed before 7:40am. But by the time that I had warmed and loaded the Trooper, it was almost 7:55am. I arrived to work at 8:10am.
My morning wasn’t as busy as Monday but still the activity was high. I continued screening resumes. Ashley checked in with me to let me know that she was headed out to get her flat tire repaired. She also reminded me that she and Olivia were coming over tonight. I left for my run at 1pm. A tad behind, I was.
Once again, the weather was cold. It was no more than 28 degrees with yet another cold breeze blowing from the NW. I bundled up accordingly. The run was physically demanding, and admittedly wore me out, especially into the wind. Even still, on the return I got a little warm since the middle layer I wore didn’t breathe. I used the two zippers to let in some cool air, which helped a little. Still, I was soaked with sweat upon my return.
Back in my office by 2:10pm I tore into my food. While eating I contacted several applicants that I wanted to interview. I set up a mini-job fair for Thursday. The rest of the afternoon was dedicated to resolving countless customer issues. Come 5:00 I was ready to head home. I got out of the office by 5:15pm. Ashley wasn't there yet but had called Mindy to let her know she was on her way. I forgot to mention that Ashley called me again the afternoon to tell me that her and Olivia damn near were crushed by a train on Georgesville Rd while heading to the bank. She complained about no cross bars at the RR crossing and said that the sun was so bright that she couldn't see the lights flashing. Too, she said the train never bothered to blow its horn so she blindly was following other traffic. As she casually turned her head to the right she was shocked to see a train approaching. She accelerated and luckily made it across the tracks. I was a bit taken back and almost speechless thinking about what she was saying. Meanwhile, she was going off about the negligent Railroad commission whom she had already called and ripped a new one. I couldn't help but think about her own negligence and even told her as much. I reminded her that if she would've been hurt, nothing could've made it right, and that in the end, she has to be more careful and watchful, especially with Olivia in tow.
Soon I was home. I could see pulling down Newell that Ashley was already there. After greeting everyone, Jacob and I took Ykraps on a walk. Jacob just needed to get out again in the snow. We threw snowballs at one another along the walk. He's really into that sorta thing. This is stuff my girls never really sunk their teeth into like he does and I did when I was a young lad. We had fun despite the bitter cold.
By the time we got home, Mindy had our dinner on the table. Ashley had chili, and Mindy and I both had Gloria's leftover meatloaf from Sunday. The kids had other delights. Jacob had microwavable breaded shrimp, and Bella had cereal. After dinner I held Olivia for a spell and then played a game of football with Jacob in the basement. Mindy called them for a bath at 7:15pm. She was eager to have them in bed early. She stated 7:30pm. And we pretty much met that. After they were asleep, Mindy and I talked with Ashley about her "plan". She didn't care for some of our questions, or for that matter, some of our answers. It seems she expected us to figure out how she would pull off the job, school, and childcare thing. She ended up in tears. But I can't say I didn't see that coming. For whatever reason, each of my girls have this notion that I am rich and can and will pay for each and every one of their whims. I will help but won't be a checkbook. This is why young girls shouldn't have babies. They should get their life on firm ground first. She left still upset, but there was nothing I could do. We told her that we loved her and not to give up hope. But I'm not so sure she got the message.
After she departed we added some levity to our evening by watching American Idol. And if that wasn't entertainment enough, we followed that with the presidents State of the Union address. Mindy went to bed half way through his rambling. I wanted to hear and watch. Half the fun is watching the senators and congress members fiddling, fidgeting, and some even sleeping. Hillary looked great sitting there listening to Bush ramble on. At it's end, I headed up to bed. In bed, Mindy placed her ice cold hands on my bare chest. It was almost shocking how cold they were.

Fix A Flat
As is often the case, I got up a little late even though I woke two or three times between 4:30 & 5:30am to glance at the clock. I guess that last little blast of sleep was a sound one!
The morning had all the makings of a typical Monday. My mood was gloomy, the weather cold, and five long work days lied ahead. I know that’s a pessimistic viewpoint but that’s often how I feel anymore come Monday morning.
Before thinking too heavily about it, I began my exercise routine and whipped it out before 5:55am. Soon, Ykraps and I were out the door walking in the cold wintry morning air. There was yet another light coating of snow on the driveway meaning that it snowed again a little over night. And since my Trooper was parked on the driveway right next to Mindy’s backing lane, I had no choice but to shovel again to help ensure she doesn’t slide into my parked vehicle. Because if she did, I don’t know that I could ever for give her. :)
I was back inside cold and ready for coffee by 6:15am. Mindy was already awake & in the shower when I took hers upstairs, but due to the time I wasn’t surprised. I simply placed her coffee on her lingerie dresser while she showered. I returned to the downstairs to begin phase II of my morning prep.
I read the Daily OM, meditated, packed lunch, and made breakfast. We were all eating as a family by 7:05am. Like always, Mindy and the children left for school at 7:20am. I went up & took a shower.
I was downstairs and ready to go by 7:45am. I warmed the Trooper and scraped the windows several minutes before leaving the house. I was on the road by 7:52am.
It smelt like a Monday at work. But it was nice being off of on-call. I spent the morning screening resumes as well as dealing with a few escalations. I didn’t leave for a run until slightly after 1pm. It was cold so I bundled up with an extra warm under layer. In addition to the cold, there was a very stiff and chilly breeze coming out of the NW. Let’s just say that I was happy to make it to the turnaround and have the wind at my back.
After a shower and before returning to my office, I poked my head in the boss’ office. We chatted for a few. I informed him that I needed to leave early, like 3pm. I had to go rescue daughter Ashley’s car that sat in Grovetucky with a flat tire since she abandoned it Saturday night. The remainder of my work day was brief. I had time to eat lunch and tie up a few loose ends before departing. That's it. I called my dad to see if I could stop by to borrow his hydraulic jack to make the tire change easier. And speaking with Ashley, she didn’t even know if she had a spare.
When I got to my dad’s it was almost 3:20pm. He had everything already sitting out. He had two hydraulic jacks, two tire irons, and an old pillow for me to sit on. Because I knew about it this morning, I already had my winter Carhart’s and gloves packed in the Trooper.
Before driving to Grovetucky, I had to stop at Ashley’s to get the car key. I arrived at the Get-n'-Go on Stringtown Rd a little after 4pm. There it was, sitting covered in fresh snow with a flat on the rear driver’s side. I opened the trunk and moved a ton of miscellaneous crap out of the way to hopefully expose a spare tire. And indeed there was a spare tire under it all. Good deal! I quickly changed into my Carharts then loosened the four lug nuts holding the tire.
After loosening the lugs I jacked up the rear of the car and wedged the cheap little come-with-the-car jack under the passenger side rear wheel to prevent any subsequent sliding. Five minutes after arriving we were cooking with gas, or so I thought. I tried and tried to pull the tire from the brake drum. But no matter what I did it would not budge. It was seized up. I looked for some sort of locking device but there was none. I even resorted to beating the wheel with the heaviest of the two tire irons my dad sent with me. No luck! I called my dad for suggestions. He suggested I sit on my ass in front of the tire and pray! Not really! He suggested that I kick the wheel left then right until it falls off. I tried but again it didn’t budge.
Before giving up, I tried putting air in the tire thinking that I might get lucky. And since the air machine was just a few feet away, that made total sense. But that didn't help either. Last option was to ‘phone a friend’. I called Ken See, a friend and work peer who I remembered lives right around the corner. He is very handy with stuff like this. He was there in five minutes – bless his heart. He suggested a hammer and pry bar, and brought those thigns along. We beat on that thing for ten solid minutes without it budging. We looked again for a locking device of some sort but there wasn’t anything we could see. Out of desperation, I tried beating it one last time. Suddenly, a very minute gap appeared between the wheel and the drum. We kept at it, rotating the wheel a quarter turn or so until we had it loose. Finally!
We put the donut spare in place and that was that- right? Nope!
Rightfully so, Ken suggested checking the pressure in the donut which looked admittedly low. He was right, it had only 15lbs PSI and required about 60lbs PSI. No problem. I started the car then got out to scrape the snow so I could back closer to the air machine. But when I got out I closed the door. But Ashley’s car automatically locks the doors when you get out. Big problem! Now we had the tire fixed but no way to move the car. Oops! We tried all of the keys we each had but none worked.
I phoned Ashley who said that her mom has a spare and that she was at work, which was right around the corner from the Get-n'-Go. Now that’s living right! She called her mom and then called me back. According to Ashley, Kelly would be by in a matter of minutes. And, just like planned, she was there in a matter of minutes. I unlocked the car and backed it to the air pump. Kelly went on home. Ken left too after I thanked him profusely.
I filled all the tires to spec then headed towards Ashley’s house to drop her key or pick her up, which ever she preferred. She chose for me to simply drop the key, and said that her mother would bring her to pick-up the car later.
While driving out of Grovetucky, I happened upon an old co-worker, Chris Combs, at a traffic light. We chatted briefly. We both went on our merry way. I was going to head straight home for being cold and wet ,but last minute I decided to stop back by my dad’s to drop his tools. While doing so I discovered that I had inadvertently placed one of his tire irons in the back of Ashley’s car. I promised to get it at a later date, and the headed home.
Mindy was already home when I arrived. By now, she had already cleaned the house, walked Ykraps, prepped tomorrow’s coffee, and reheated the chili. For that I was most thankful. Before even sitting to eat, I got a warm fire crackling. By the time we finished eating, it was time for the kids to return home. While waiting, I got busy working on my blog. Once the kids arrived Mindy got them upstairs rather quickly and ready for bed. As always, I helped with the read and tuck.
Mindy went to bed earlier than me again tonight. I think that she was in bed by 9pm. I stayed up and read for another hour or so. By the time I went to bed she was out cold.

The first gathering of snow
1) Sunday evening as only a few flakes still fell
2) Jacoby posing with his rosey red cheeks - snow ball scars!
3) Bella pretending to enjoy snow
4) Kaileigh having fun - notice how symmetrical the snowball
I crawled out of bed at 7:30 feeling completely rested and rearing to go. It’s a good thing, too, because I had to get moving. Besides, the kids were up ridiculously early – somewhere close to 6am playing in their rooms and making a considerable amount of noise. Mindy planned for all of us to attend church meaning we’d have to leave the house by about 10:10am. Thinking in reverse, I knew I needed to be up and attacking my morning agenda early. I had to make coffee, exercise, walk Ykraps, relax, run, and shower.
I noticed snow beginning to fall out the window, and by the looks of it, it had just started. I made the coffee and pushed through my exercise routine. Admittedly, I was looking forward to walking Ykraps in the winter wonderland that was developing outside. Soon Ykraps and I were out amongst it. He loves being out in the snow. It must be in his blood. However, he doesn’t particularly care for extreme cold.
The snow was coming done fairly heavy, although it was what I call “little snow”. And probably more importantly, it was starting to accumulate. Back at home, the kids were very excited to see it snowing, and prematurely asked if we could sled and make snow balls with their new snowball maker. Mindy let them know that there wasn’t nearly enough snow for either activity at this point. Too, the last weather forecast I saw only indicated a chance of brief morning snow with little, if any, accumulation.
Over the course of the next hour it continued to snow and accumulate. By the time I left for my run we had just over and inch, and that’s an ideal amount for a run. It provides just enough extra padding to make the run a delight. The snow was soft and fluffy, too - not wet and sticky. By the time I was back home we had nearly two inches. Before even heading inside I shoveled the drive. My driveway is problematic with any amount of snow since it faces north and slopes significantly. It took about twenty five minutes to shovel the drive and walks. This was my first shoveling of the season and the first “real’ snowfall, too. Prior to today, I heard we had .3 inches for the season.
Mindy had eggs ready for me again this morning. After the run and the shoveling I was hungry. I ate my eggs and drank more coffee then checked in with work. I had an issue or two to deal with. At 9:40am I got in the shower and readied for church. Mindy had all three of the kids ready to go.
Mindy already had the Trooper warming when I made it down stairs. We left for church with the snow continuing to come down rather heavily. The streets were a mess. I was sure that church would be baron. It was not. The lot was about ¾’s full. Today’s sermon was about what it really means to be one with Jesus. Interesting!
Church ended earlier than usual. They went no more than about fifty minutes today. Mindy got up and sang one song with the choir. She was the only one out of robe. Oh my!
We left church and headed for home. The kids were pumped about the prospects of playing in the snow. After all, this not only was our first snowfall this winter season but our first appreciable accumulation since December 7 of 2005. The kids couldn’t wait to try out the sleds they got for Xmas 2005!
Once home, it seemed that the snow had finally stopped coming down. The driveway was once again covered in another two inches of fresh snow. I had no choice but to shovel again. Meanwhile, Mindy was inside getting the kids dressed for snow play and feeding them lunch. I went in an enjoyed a bowl of chili. And by the way, perfect timing on making chili!
After my tummy was satisfied, we all headed out to play in the snow. Everyone was fitted with snow gear. We got into a snowball fight right out of the shoot. Jacob either forgot or didn’t realize that it’s a two way thing. You throw you receive. I think he thought that I would simply receive. Nope – wrong! He wasn’t too please to get a handful of soft, cold snow to the face. Soon I had to fend off Jacob, Mindy, Bella, and Kaileigh. They were all after me. I took on more than one face full of snow. But to be fair, I dished it right back.
Bella was our first casualty. She was on the ground mitten-less an crying that she was cold and wanted to go in. Jacob and Kaileigh, on the other hand, were really in to it. After taking Bella back inside, Mindy returned for more snow in the face. I guess she didn’t get enough the first time! J We played outside until about 1:45pm. Jacob was the final Eskimo to go back in.
We tore off our snow gear and readied for Gloria’s in a hurry. I wanted to be there early to make the toilet repairs she requested two weeks ago. We had to stop at Home Depot to get parts, too. We stopped at Home Depot on W.Broad St. and I-270. Mindy and the kids waited in the car. I made quick work of my shopping and was back out in ten minutes or less. Once back in the car, I realized that I had left the toilet parts in the store. I had to go back in to retrieve them. Damn!
We arrived at Gloria’s around 2:40pm. I began working on the toilets pronto. I completed both gut replacements in less than an hour – no surprises. The Bears NFC championship was already playing out when I finished. I watched it until dinner was ready somewhere close to 4:30pm. Sadly, the Bears won the game easily after the Saints made a short run just after halftime.
We had meatloaf, potatoes and green beans, and pasta salad for dinner. It was very tasty. But then again, I always say that. For dessert, Gloria made me my own plate of chocolate chip cookies. She made her homemade chocolate peanut butter fudge for everyone else. I’ve never cared much for peanut butter fudge. We left Gloria’s just after 6:45pm and took Kaileigh home.
We dropped Kaileigh and were finally home somewhere close to 7:15pm. Mindy rallied the kids upstairs to ready for bed while I walked Ykraps. After walking him I shoveled a third coating of icy snow off the driveway. In fact, I had to park my Trooper on the street after sliding back down the drive. I used the shovel upside down to scrape the icy layer off the concrete then swept it clear with my shop broom. That exposed bare concrete. I was able to pull the Trooper into the drive before going in.
The Colts were trailing the Patriots 21-6 by the time I joined the game. Crap! But I was hopeful that they’d mount some sort of comeback. Long story short, they did. I was very happy for both Peyton Manning and even more so for Tony Dungy. After the thrilling finish we both went to bed.

Folks It's Chili
We were awakened by the kids wanting to get up and play as early as 7:00am. Mindy, being the good parent that she is, insisted they play quietly in their rooms. And for the most part, they did. We slept until about 8:15am. When I finally jumped out of bed, Iwas determined ot get going. And I am always like that. Mindy, however, wanted to snuggle. Instead, I gave her a quick hug and got going with my day. I was determined not to sleep what was left of the morning away.
By the time I finished my exercises I felt pretty darn good. Ykraps and I took off on our walk shortly after 8:30am. He was anxious to get outside. Once again, it was quite chilly. While I was making coffee after returning home, Mindy and the kids joined me downstairs. Unfortunately, I was really longing for more private, quiet time, although I knew that it wasn’t justified.
For whatever reason, my need for solitude ran counter to Mindy’s need for extra attention. I did my best to manage.
Come 9:30, it was time to ready for a run. I dawned my running gear then took off into temps still hovering in the low 20’s. I ran the Trabue Rd route having not gone that way for a couple of weeks. It was pleasant. Upon my return, Mindy had scrambled eggs ready for me. That was a bit of a surprise and made me happy!
We didn’t do much with the rest of our morning and early afternoon short of cleaning up a little. Although, I did get caught up in several work related matters. In between dealing with work, I began making the chili I had so looked forward to making and tasting. I had it in the new Crock Pot by 1pm.
Come 2:30pm, Mindy and the kids left for a birthday party at the Galaxy Golf Party house just down the road. I stayed home tending to work and the chili. And finally, after staring at a stack of paid bills and other miscellaneous receipts that had been piling up since before Xmas, I filed them away. That task lead to more organizational related chores. Next, I cleaned up the entertainment center. There were several CD cases that needed stowed away, and all the electronics needed cleaned & polished. I took the time to clean them well.
While organizing, I decided to put in an old VHS tape from the summer of 1990. It was titled Courtney’s b-day & camping trip. The video quality was surprisingly good. The video brought a tear to my eye seeing all three of my girls in their youthful joy. My how things have changed in the last 16-17 years. Included on the tape were shots of both of my grandmother’s sitting together pouring over my niece when she was a just baby. Everyone looked strikingly younger (go figure). I hadn’t seen this tape in maybe 10 years!
Four o’ clock came quickly. As asked, I had left a VM for Shelly, Kaileigh’s step mom, indicating that Mindy would be coming by around 4:15pm to pick her up. Mindy phoned around 4:25pm to let me know that she was there to pick-up Kaileigh but that no one was home. I called and left another message. Mindy headed home. Now, we weren’t sure whether Kaileigh would be joining us tonight or not.
Shelly called around 6pm to let us know that they were finally home and that Kaileigh still wanted to come over. I volunteered to drive over & pick her up. Bella agreed to join me. We left after pulling the corn bread out of the oven. We picked Kaileigh up around 6:30pm. She brought along a dress to wear to church as well as clothes to wear to Gloria’s tomorrow for Sunday dinner.
Back at home, I immediately walked Ykraps while the kids got acclimated to one another. Mindy made macaroni and cheese for the kids. They weren’t too interested in chili. We all sat down to eat shortly thereafter. At first, Kaileigh said she wasn’t hungry. But it wasn’t long before she asked for some mac & cheese anyhow. She ended up eating two plates full! :)
Mindy was getting very tired and had been dragging most of the day. I think she drank a bit too much the night before. She did have a couple glasses of wine and a heavy Stout at Barleys. After readying the kids for bed and tucking them in, she went to bed herself. It was no later than 8PM.
Bella and Kaileigh were high maintenance for the next hour or so. Kaileigh needed some cold medicine, and they both got out of bed at least three more times. Eventually, Kaileigh asked if she could come sleep on the sofa, or with the bedroom light on. She claimed that she often sleeps with the TV on as well as an over head light. But the light would’ve kept Bella up all night. I opted to let her sleep on the sofa while I read instead. Bella seemed fine with that idea in part because she was so tired herself. Kaileigh fell asleep within five minutes of lying on the sofa. I read until about 9:45pm when my eyes got too heavy. I headed to bed very early for a Saturday.

Ladies & Gentlemen ... The Weekend!
1) The Firkin
2) Olivia completely bedazzled
3) Me & Oliva talking
4) Katie at the Pointe
For no apparent reason, I woke feeling slightly under slept after nearly 8 hours of solid sleep. It didn’t take long, however, before the sleepies were behind me and my energy high. A vigorous round of exercise saw to that. It was still pretty chilly, the early morning temperature hovered around 20 degrees. I walked Ykraps then returned and made coffee, breakfast, and lunch.
Although it was Friday, I didn’t have the usual skip in my step that I might otherwise have since I would be on-call over the weekend. Still, I remained confident that it wouldn’t be a dreadful experience.
I left the house for work at 7:50am and arrived just after 8:00am. The first half of my day went about as smooth as one could hope for, although I didn’t get away for my run until 1:10pm.
It felt good wrapping up another week of running. During my run I inventoried the number of runs/days remaining until my ten year running streak anniversary. I have 21 more to complete. Too, I remembered that I need a new pair of running shoes. In fact, I am way over due.
The afternoon, for a lot of reasons, was much dicier than the morning. Things got very busy. We were hopping all afternoon. And that’s never good, especially heading into an on-call weekend. I did my best, and by the tiem I left I felt satisfied with where things stood heading int othe weekend. I left for home near 5:30pm.
I was home by 5:45pm feeling rather upbeat about the weekend regardless of my on-call status. As usual, the weekend was pretty much all planned out, albeit nothing too exciting. Tonight, we were heading to Barleys. Tomorrow, G.D. Kaileigh is spending the night, and we’re making chili. Sunday, we’re doing church and then dinner at Gloria’s.
Ashley arrived to watch the kids around 6:30pm. As usual, I snuck in a quick nap before getting ready to go. Olivia was chatting up a storm and entertaining all of us. The kids have really taken to Ashley. That’s because she interacts with them.
We didn’t leave for Barleys until just after 8pm. By the time we arrived, Tommy was already there but not anywhere in sight. We knew this because Jeremy & Courtney indicated as much. They were seated at a table in the bar area having some dinner and beer.
Bob & Mary Ann weren’t present because Bob’s father took a dangerous spill at home, so they headed to Wadsworth to spend time with the family over the weekend. I ordered a firkin and Mindy ordered a Shiraz. Tonight’s firkin was Jack Frost – Winter Warmer. I didn’t eat dinner. I wasn’t that hungry.
Mindy’s friends, Aaron & Steve, showed up just as planned. Our new friends, Mark & Trudy were there, too, as were other regulars, Rick, Steve, and Mark. We all got a bunch of laughs discussing this week’s American Idol. Most agreed that it's can’t miss television!
We hung at Barleys until about 11pm. On our way home we stopped at the Pointe Tavern, which is on our way home. I wanted to say hello to an old friend, Katie who bartends there. While there, Mindy had water and I had a Sam Adams. We stayed just long enough to chat briefly with Katie, take a picture, and finish my beer. I saw an old Time Warner cohort there, too – Steve Rittenberry.
We arrived home just before Midnight or there abouts. After Ashley departed for home we headed to bed. Both of us were tired.

Hair, Nails, & Feet
HAPPY 23RD BIRTHDAY LINDSEY ANN WRIGHT
I was on my feet gazing at the stovetop clock at 5:44am. I quickly refilled my water cup and choked down my One-A-Day vitamin. It was already Thursday. Boy the week’s going fast.
It wasn’t too long before my exercises were history and Ykraps and I were out the door for our morning walk. After being reunited with my parka liner, the cold had nothing on me. I was plenty toasty.
Back at the house I made Mindy her coffee. She was already up and in the closet selecting the day’s wardrobe. I left her coffee in the master bath on the lingerie dresser. I headed back down the stairs to carry on with my morning routine. The first thing I did was check my email to see if Bob had booked his flight and sent an itinerary. He hadn’t. Next, I read the Daily OM.
It was already after 7:30am. I had to move on. I quickly packed mine and Mindy’s lunch. I made fried eggs for breakfast. The kids were once again in jovial moods making everyone’s morning a little brighter. In what was a bit of a twist, they were both downstairs before their mother. I made them both breakfast, too.
They left for school at 7:20am. I headed to the shower. After my readying for work I spent a few minutes tidying up the kitchen and then left for work. It was nearly 8am when I left the house. Ten minutes later I was at work.
Work was rather busy right out of the shoot. No time to waste. If nothing else, that helped the morning fly by. I left for a run at 12:45pm. It was still cold and below freezing. There was just a slight breeze. The run went easy. After a fast shower I was back in my office before 2pm.
The afternoon was much like the morning. I learned via email that everyone was a go for our ski trip, but I chose to wait for final, final word from everyone before making the condo reservation since once we book it, we’re in it for the full amount – no cancellation policy within 45 days. I still wanted to hear back from Bob & MA to see if they had booked their flights. Tom Shep’s friends from San Fran apparently had no interest in sharing a condo with all of us. Whatever???
I left work around 5:20pm. Just before leaving my time-off approval came through. On the way home Mindy informed me that Ashley was coming over with Olivia. She wanted to share her “life plan” with us. Word has it that she’s wanting to attend Ohio State School of Cosmetology school. I was anxious to hear her plan.
As soon as I arrived home I placed my running clothes in the dryer and deposited my lunch container sink side. Next, I changed my shoes and grabbed Ykraps’ leash. We walked to the west in the cold bitter wind. As we walked up the walk back to our house, Ashley pulled up. I apparently startled her when she got out of the car and heard me talking to Olivia.
We hurried inside. It was cold. Ashley was in flip-flops and a light fleece shirt. Duh- it’s cold outside! Mindy and I decided to have a very simple dinner – chili dogs - no buns. I failed to mention that I called and checked on daughter Courtney before leaving work. She’s said to be doing well. That was a relief.
Before and after we ate I held Olivia. She loves hanging out with me. After dinner I got really sleepy, however, so Mindy took Olivia and held and played with her for about another hour. She had her totally relaxed when I came to. I guess I dozed for almost twenty minutes. Sometime around 8:15pm Ashley and Olivia left for home. But before Ashley left, she played a game of carpet hockey with Jacob. I could hear them down the basement. Ashley won something like 10-7. :)
The kids were already in bed. In fact, they were in bed before Ashley left. I spent the next half hour updating my blog and checking emails. I got official word from Bob to book the condo. I would do that tomorrow from work. Around 8:45pm, I popped some popcorn and moved to my reading chair. I read, ate, and dozed again. I woke near 9:30pm and headed straight to bed. Mindy stayed up and busy working on her students grade cards. Wouldn’t they be disappointed to know that Mindy lets me arbitrarily grade their papers and note their grades!
It seemed odd going to bed before and without Mindy. That has only happened a handful of times.

16 months - total bliss!
1) Us
2) Catching up on laundry
3) Bella and her Leapster
I slept a tad late as measured by the clock. It was 5:42 by the time I was downstairs and ready to get going. As usual, I took a vitamin, checked the coffee, and glanced out the back door. It was crystal clear and looked very cold.
I went to the sofa where I tucked my toes and whipped out my sit-ups. My back was noticeably loose and limber after all the attention Mindy’s given it of late. I noticed, too, that my thighs weren’t nearly as stiff as they were prior to her rubbing them last night. They became incredibly stiff after all the uphill running in Hocking Hills & my Tuesday afternoon run at work. It always hits two days later!
I made quick work of the rest of my regiment. I was out the door with Ykraps minutes later. I bundled up in my parka and gloves, and once again, I wore a fleece jacket under my parka to make-up for the missing winter liner. I was very comfy in the cold winter air.
Upon my return I made Mindy some coffee and delivered it bedside. She was pleased and greeted me accordingly. I returned downstairs where I got moving with the rest of my prep (meditation, reading, and food). I didn’t need to pack a lunch since we were having a chili potluck at work. I did pack some nuts and fruit for Mindy.
For breakfast, I whipped up scrambled eggs topped with sharp cheddar cheese served up with the usual cut fruit. The kids were up and downstairs a bit earlier than usual, and both were in good moods. That made the morning more pleasant for all of us. Right on queue, Mindy and kids departed at 7:20am.
Alone, I stripped off my clothes and darted from room to room aggressively marking my territory. I jumped on each of the already made beds, and wiped boogers on the hallway walls. If that wasn’t enough, I dumped out Ykraps’ fresh water and replaced it with some scooped up from the nearest commode. Lastly, in all my glory, I screamed profanities at several cars driving past the house. I felt much better.
As usual, I took a quick shower. I dressed in black Dockers and wore my favorite black wool sweater with a white t-shirt underneath. I was all but ready to leave the house. I carried my gym bag to the Trooper and started the engine and turned on the defroster. I let it set and run for ten minutes before heading out for good.
As I made my way towards work, I noticed that gas prices were even lower today. They were down to $1.94 at Thorntons. Once at work, I carried my chili cook-off dessert to the fridge and refilled my water pitcher. This being a staff meeting day, I knew the morning would go fast.
It was darn near 1pm before I knew it. With little hesitation, I left for the gym. The sky was as clear as it’s been at run time in many, many days. There wasn’t a cloud to be seen. It was awfully chilly, though. It was 30 degrees. And for the first time that I can recall in months, there was absolutely no breeze blowing. Very odd! The flags, all at half mass, lay limp against their poles. The run was very enjoyable. I could’ve run forever.
On my return I had a strange encounter with two scary looking characters driving by on Davidson Rd in a real egg beater of a car. They called me over pointing to a large white map asking for help. They looked like Bubba & Bubba's brother. I thought I heard one of them mutter that I had a pretty mouth. I made no effort to lend them a hand. Instead, I kept running forward keeping a watchful eye to my immediate surroundings all the while thinking how bad it is that I couldn’t trust them and offer help. I’d love to help a legitimately lost soul, but these two looked eerily suspicious.
Soon I was safely back in the gym. I headed directly to the hot shower. It felt like a million dollars. I was eager to get back to the center to sample some of the many crock pots full of chili. To my surprise, there were six empty crock pots and only one with any chili left when I made it back. Holy crap! These guys can eat, but I already knew that. I grabbed a bowl of the lone pot remaining and topped it off with some cheese and sour cream. It was darn good but nothing too spectacular. For dessert, I had a piece of my own contribution - chocolate chip cheesecake. A few minutes later, I had a piece of Don’s chewy butter cake. It was good too.
I worked through the remainder of the afternoon. During a break, I sent feelers out to the rest of the Oregon ski trip participants with the proposed travel dates and accommodations. I was now waiting to hear back from all of them. Mindy and I are set.
I left the office at 5:15pm. However, instead of heading directly home, I made a planned pit stop at Kroger to get some flowers and a card for Mindy. Today was our 16 month anniversary. While there, I grabbed a b-day card and gift certificate for Lindsey since her 23rd b-day is tomorrow.
I was back on the road by 5:34pm. A call to Mindy revealed that she was still in Grovetucky and prepping to pump some gas. She had a parent conference or something after school and took even more time to get some work done on report cards. I arrived home just before her. On the porch sat a Fedex package. Wow, could that be my parka liner already?
By the time I got settled and leashed up Ykraps, Mindy pulled in the garage. In fact, as we exited the house for our walk, she startled me getting out of her van. She joined me on our walk.
When we returned home, Mindy made herself some food and then we spent the next hour talking about our ski trip. We called Lindsey to wish her Happy B-day and to see if she was coming over tomorrow. I also took the opportunity to remind her about her insurance and phone bill. And, yes, that was my parka liner in the Fedex box! Wahoo!
Before long the kids were home. I greeted them at the door. Mindy was upstairs putting away clean clothes. Before Mindy insisted the kids get ready for bed, Jacob and I played another game of carpet hockey in the basement. I won 17-15.
When Mindy called them upstairs, I went right to blogging. I spent the next hour adding photos and updating text. In between, I did the read & tuck. We allowed Jacoby to watch fifteen minutes of the Buckeye basketball game before it was lights out.
After the kids were asleep, I spent the next hour nailing down our air reservations for Portland. I got tickets for $200 r/t. Amazing! I also called Bob to see what his final plans were. His dad took a dangerous spill at home earlier in the day, so Bob had been dealing with that. He said he was a go!
While printing off the itinerary, my printer jammed up and gave a faulty ink cartridge error message. That troubled me because the black ink cartridge it pointed to was practically new. It has been acting up for over a month, however. Damn HP!
While I took care of the travel arrangements, Mindy watched American Idol. I could here her hooting it up in there. It sounded funny. I joined her at 9:30 for the final half hour. Tonight they were in Seattle, and what a bunch of strange agents!!!! After Idol, we headed up to bed.
