As a result of my insomnia, I slept in until almost 630am. I half expected to hear the boys knocking at the front door. That didn't happen, but they were there shortly after I was up and downstairs. I had just enough time to complete calisthenics and pour coffee before they arrived. It was colder -9 degrees officially, and a windchill in the -30 range. Pretty much the same drill as the morning before with the boys.
My plan all along was to work at home through the morning but then head across town to a customer location for the afternoon. Once again, I didn't plan to run until the sun was up, although quite often that's the coldest part of the day. Still, I figured it safer to run in broad daylight. After meditation and stretch, I got out for my run around 845am. This time I was a little wiser, adding an additional bottom layer, wearing long johns that I typically use for snow skiing. I had it out, but this time I forgot to put on the additional pullover fleece, so I ended up with just three rather thin upper wicking layers. But as it turned out, that proved more than adequate. Like the morning before, a mile or so into the run and I was toasty as ever. And once I had the rising sun in my face I warmed even more so. A very nice day all in all.
Mindy was up a little earlier than the morning before and seemingly in a much better mood. Just as I planned, I spent the morning working from home but got a shower and left for New Albany near 1130am. The temperature was still below zero but was expected to warm to near 10 above by midafternoon. That sounded like a heat wave considering where we were.
I hadn't driven my car for well over a week. I headed out to start it 25 minutes before my departure. I was quickly reminded that I needed to stop for gas. Had something less than a quarter tank. Figures! The Accord started just fine, especially after sitting for more than 10 days and in the bitter cold. Filled up at the Circle K. Took a little more than 14 gallons. It was an easy drive across town. Traffic was extremely light. I'm sure that had as much to do with the time of day as it did with the closures due to the extreme cold. Mindy noted that even OSU was closed, which has always been a very rare thing.
Arrived cross town near noon. Quickly discovered that my old cube was vacant. Apparently the account manager, who a few months back pulled rank and took the space, was working from home. I took full advantage and set up shop there for the rest of the day. Did about an hour's worth of work before heading off to our standing 1pm meeting, which ran its usual hour. A lot of good stuff. Worth my time driving across town. Spent the rest of my work day there. Didn't take a lunch. Used the time to further along my monthly report as well as a couple other dangling concerns. Wasn't until almost 4pm when I remembered our weekly staff call at 415pm. Oops! Ended up at the office until almost 6pm.
It was already dark and back down into the single digits by my departure. Still warmer than the morning, however. Called Mindy, who shared that we were keeping Bella home from gymnastics whether it was cancelled or not. Too cold. She was busy making dinner, Jean's chicken. Didn't get home until just after 630pm. By then the boys were long gone. Mindy said they played better together, but that there still were a few issues, mostly between Jacob & Rocky. The neighbor kids were still all at the house, but left once I was home and dinner was ready.
The chicken was especially good. She nuked Bob Evans mashed potatoes and gravy, too. Can't recall how we spent our after dinner and clean-up time, but everybody was in bed really early. I'm talking 9pm early. After staying to watch the national championship game the night before, I really needed a good, long night of sleep.
