Ancient Chinese Secret ... We're Open on Easter
Slept in until after 8am again. This time, however, Mindy was already up and downstairs with coffee started. That might happen 3 or 4 times a year. I must’ve been really tired. It looked like a damp and dreary day in the offing, the skies gray and the streets wet from a gentle rain. The only consolation being that it was 51 degrees. I walked Eiknarf while the coffee finished brewing. I didn’t bother with an umbrella and consequently got more than a little wet.
Mindy asked what time I finally came to bed. She must’ve been out cold. Told her that it wasn’t too long after she headed up. We sipped coffee and then hid just two eggs we filled with cash for the kids. They wouldn’t be home until later that evening but wanted that taken care of early on.
We didn’t have much if anything planned until heading to her mom’s at 330pm. And with the weather being like it was, neither of us had much motivation. Around 10am Mindy headed back up to bed again. About the same time, I did a stretch and then dressed for a run. By then the rain had all but ended but the clouds lingered behind. And because it was 51 degrees, I didn’t bother wearing long johns or hand and ear covers. Felt freer, lighter. Before heading out, I went upstairs to alert Mindy of my whereabouts. I lifted the pug back into bed too.
Like most Sunday’s, I ran just three miles. Felt good. Got back home around 1045am. Aside from getting showers, we didn’t do much of anything over the course of the next couple hours. Around 1230pm, I suggested we head out to lunch. At that point neither one of us had anything to eat. Cognizant of the Easter holiday, we weren’t too sure what if anything would be open. I offered up The Big Fat and Mindy concurred. If we found it closed, we simply venture on elsewhere until we found something that suited our fancy.
Despite an ‘open seven days a week’ sign in the window, the Big Fat was closed. We headed east on Fishinger Rd. to Tremont Rd. As we passed a desolate Tremont Center, I suggested the former Ding Ho, or Dragon Palace. Mindy liked that idea too. Chinese restaurants are almost always opened. Just the talk of food had both of our tummy’s growling. We showed up at the Dragon Palace near 1pm. As hoped, their open sign was illuminated and flashing!
Like our last visit in February, we were their only customer. Same server, too. Very pleasant and attentive. We ordered within minutes. Mindy ordered something different than before – fried rice with beef, chicken , pork and shrimp. I ordered the War Sui Gai. And we both ordered won-ton soup and an egg roll. The soup arrived first and it was really good. Always is. The egg roll was super good, too. Mindy says they’re the best anywhere.
Mindy’s entrée arrived well before mine, which is odd. Looked and smelt terrific. Of course it didn’t help that I was so darn hungry. My entrée arrived a few minutes later. Mindy slowed down to wait for my entrée to show up. Might’ve been the best War Sui Gai ever. And there was enough to feed at least two people, and probably three. I was able to eat only about a 1/3 of what they served me. Mindy about half hers. There for about 45 minutes, we got our leftovers boxed to go.
We talked about heading across the street to Targhetto to get more Easter stuff but on closer inspection we could see that it was closed. Not a car in the lot. We headed for home arriving near 2pm. Mindy headed upstairs for a nap while I cuddled up in the family room chair with my book. I figured I might read until sleep came over me. Worked like a charm. Slowly but surely by eyes got super heavy and soon I was out. Slept until 310pm. Headed up stairs soon after to wake Mindy knowing that she wanted to leave for her mom’s around 330pm. We both did a quick brush up, Mindy citing that better sleep than she got all night.
As we prepared to leave, we opted to take and deliver Landon and Rocky’s Easter baskets on our way. I sent Lindsey a text letting her know that we were on our way. Left the house at 320pm. We decided last second to take Eiknarf too. She was very happy to be traveling. Lindsey came out to greet us at the car and to get the two baskets. Without much fanfare we were finally on our way to Gloria’s.
Arrived at Gloria’s near 345p. Joe, Craig & Jeff, Jodie &Larry already there. Been a while since we had a formal sit down dinner there. In fact, I’m guessing it was TG. Of course we were there for Xmas and then Bella’s adoption day event too, not to mention dropping off and picking up the pug for our most recent HV trip.
Still waiting on Pat & Mel, Lindy, Julie & Katie, Missy and the girls. Todd was on duty. Our contribution was a cheese and pickle tray. All the others arrived in due time and soon we were gathered for dinner. As usual, the options were plenty. There was chicken, ham, a macaroni salad, au gratin potatoes, corn pudding, cucumber salad, and much, much more. I was careful not to overdo it. Everything was tasty and delicious.
After dinner, a few of us spent some time outback. We were blessed with some late afternoon/early evening sunshine. Several folks went on a neighborhood stroll while the rest of us lounged in the livingroom.
Come 6pm, we were expecting our children to arrive anytime. I think it was about 620p when they finally showed up. Soon after they arrived we returned to the table for desert – icebox cookies and strawberry flan cake. Yum! I had icebox cookies. By the time desert was finished, it was well after 7pm and time to organize ourselves for home. The kids needed showers and Monday was return to school day for both the kids and Mindy after a week off. Before we left, Gloria gave the kids Easter baskets.
Arrived home between 730-8pm. I asked Bella to walk the pug while we carried everything inside. As soon as we were settled inside, we had the kids hunt the two eggs we hid earlier that morning. Jacob was to find the black one, Bella the dark purple egg. Other than where they were hidden, not sure the big deal since they both contained the same thing - $10. We had them hid rather well and it took them about ten minutes to find them. Neither was too excited with the $10. We try. Of course, we had Easter baskets for them too.
I soon changed into my PJs then tuned to the final two hours of The Bible. Once again, Mindy cringed at the site and sound. Had Bella citing how sick it was for me to watch something like that. The producers did a good job conveying the passion – the story. Mindy went as far as to move her laptop to the island so she couldn’t see the TV. She and Bella headed to bed around 10p. I wasn’t too far behind, maybe 1030pm. Unfortunately, I ate too much candy during our mini Easter celebration. I was paying for it, lying there in bed feeling wired. Took a while to fall asleep.

Making the Most of the Weather
Ashley sent this pic of Olivia on Ft Meyers Beach
Perhaps a little short slept, I was up and downstairs by 830am. Those that know me, know that I can’t stand sleeping that late. I wake feeling like I’ve missed perhaps the best part of the day. I started a pot of coffee then played around online while waiting for it to finish brewing. It was mostly clear and cool – about 36 degrees. Supposed to be a fairly nice day – 57 and sunny.
Enjoyed coffee and internet for quite a while. Didn’t head out for a run until just after 10am. Neighbor Pat Shultz was walking by just beginning his morning walk as I made my way to the foot of the drive. We chatted ever so briefly before heading our separate ways. It felt warmer than I expected. I opted to leave my hand covers in my jacket pocket and left my ear covers up around my hat versus covering my ears. Still a little crisp but not a hint of cold. I ran the usual three mile weekend route, passing Pat again at about the 2.25 mile mark.
Once at home, I took Mindy some coffee then pulled the pug down from the our bed and took her out for a walk. By the time we were back at home Mindy was up and in the kitchen. She reminded me that she had a graduation party to attend. She planned to grocery shop immediately after. Suggested we shop for the grandkids Easter baskets later that afternoon.
After enjoying a little more coffee and making an egg sandwich, I headed to the garage. There, I fiddled with the mower again. After hitting the carburetor & linkage with lots of carb cleaner I got it running smoothly. I used a chip clip to keep the throttle closed to keep it running while I multitasked. While the mower ran, I cleaned and stowed our snow skis for the 2nd time in the last few weeks. This time for keeps. I shut the mower down then attempted restart. Started first pull – easy.
Left 6 or 7 bags of giant red cannas bulbs in the garage all winter even though I intended to carry them to the basement. A few weeks ago I noticed moisture gathering in the bags which I knew wouldn’t bode well for their long-term survival. Regardless, I failed once again to get them to the basement. But since it was sunny, I unfolded a 9X12’ tarp on the deck and dump them out to dry again, much like I did the day I pulled them out of the ground last fall. I left them there and headed back to the garage.
Mindy left for the graduation party while I was busy finishing up with the skis. Next up, I tired starting the BM’er again after jumping it a few weeks ago. It was completely dead but close enough. Click, click, click. I got out my handy dandy new 12v jumper again. Only this time I let it run in neutral for at least thirty minutes. While the BM’er ran, I tuned, cleaned the weed whacker and blower. Got all my lawn tools in working, running order. Both started with ease.
Before closing up the garage, the used the blower to sweep the garage of winter debris. Blew some wet leaves from the front flower beds and front stoop too. Tried starting my mower one more time too. Started right up. Cool! Removed the blade and placed with the two Deere blades that I plan to take in for sharpening as soon as Monday.
I took a quick water break then headed to the back yard with the electric hedge trimmers & extension cord so I could cut back the ornamental grasses. I had to get my 2nd tarp from the shed for the clippings. And while I was in there, I started the Deere after charging the battery a few weeks ago. Started fine. I let it run all the while I trimmed back the grasses.
All totaled, probably took 30-40 minutes cutting all the ornamental grasses back. Kenny was out doing some yard work too. Stopped over to chat. Asked about the basement project and offered up his truck to go get supplies. Shared more than once that he’s ready to get after it. I just need to go get the material and get moving on the project. We talked about the fake swan that drifted back by the island. Thought he might slip into his hip waders and go out and get it.
Spent another half hour raking the ornamental grass clippings onto a tarp and then dragging it to the compost pile. It always feels good to get the springs first major yard work taken care of. Shut the tractor down after finishing with the ornamental grasses. I guess I could easily have done more work, but I was tired, sweaty, and ready to get a shower and a snack. I headed inside feeling great about all I accomplished. For the time being, I left the cannas bulbs still drying in the sunshine. I planned to rebag them shortly though since rain was forecasted for Easter Sunday.
Inside, I poured a Gatorade. Boy, that hit the spot! Woofed down a couple sugar cookies too. Before taking a shower I Windexed the front and back doors and then watered all the houseplants. I took a shower and then washed my running clothes. I’m thinking that it was close to 4pm when Mindy got home from the party and the grocery store. I helped carry in the haul.
While Mindy put groceries away, I trimmed back the large geranium I’ve had growing indoors since about ’98. When the stems get too long and begin to droop, I cut them back and transplant them right back into the potting soil. I trimmed back the dead shedding’s as well, and then what I couldn’t readily pick-up by hand, I sucked up with the Dyson. And while I had it out, I dust vacuumed the Bose speakers and crevasses behind the plant and chair, too.
Mindy and I chatted about dinner plans. I was happy simply going to Barley’s. I think it was near 530pm when she and I left for Target to get Easter stuff for the kids. We opted to visit the one on Hilliard Rome Rd.
Holy smoke! I haven’t seen Target that crowded since Xmas time, and even then I don’t think it was quite as bad as Saturday evening. It must have been ‘big people’ night, too. To Target’s credit, not a whole lot of Easter inventory remained. Everything was picked over. We still managed to get enough good stuff to fill all the grandkids baskets. Mindy already had stuff for Jacobella, though she did pick-up a few more things for them, too, like a bathing suit for Bella, and a short sleeved wicking Buckeye shirt for Jacob. I picked up some more almonds and Chex Mix for me. All totaled, we dumped $135. Yikes!
Now after 7pm, we decided to trunk all the goodies and head straight to Barley’s. Arrived near 730p. Not that crowded. We took two seats at the bar that were vacated by two former work peeps of mine. They moved to a table. I drank a Centennial while Mindy vacillated over her own beer choice. She eventually settled on a Russian.
Not long after we got settled, the Buckeye NCAA game started. We were trailing Wichita St. from the outset and it never got better. We ordered food shortly thereafter, me ordering a Cuban, and Mindy ordering a Carnivore platter. Watchin the game left me agitated, which is why I rarely if ever watch. I think I watched a total of 3 games this season and in all three cases we played very poorly – hard to watch. The two prior, we still managed to pull out a win. Still, not worth the damage.
We trailed by as many as 20 points halfway through the 2nd half. Somehow or another, we managed a comeback and pulled within 3 points. The crowd in Barley’s erupted, but it was all for not. We lost. Season over. We weren’t at Barley’s too late. We both had two beers. I drove us home. We carried in the Easter stuff from Target then changed into PJs. Mindy quickly put together the grandkids Eater baskets while I poured what remained of that Bodhi growler. Probably about 2/3s of a pint.
Mindy wasn’t pleased that I tuned the TV to The Bible. Claims it’s too violent, disturbing. She headed somewhat angrily off to bed. I didn’t stay up too late and fell asleep after about 30 minutes. Headed up to join Mindy in bed near 11pm.

Wyoming in my Life
Boy, Friday sure came around fast. Of course it didn’t hurt that my work week didn’t begin until Tuesday. I was up and out of bed by 6am after a than restful night sleep. The moon was shining brightly in our bedroom window. Downstairs I quickly whipped out calisthenics, including 50 push-ups. Was at my PC with coffee a couple minutes later.
I played around online until 650am when I peeled myself away for meditation and a stretch. Landon was awake early and peering at me from the balcony while I went through my stretch routine. He ducked back into the bedroom while I headed off on my run near 710am. It was cold – about 27 degrees but under perfectly clear skies. I ran 4.1 miles without issue.
After my run I made myself a couple eggs. Mindy was up around 8am and Landon was downstairs too. He asked for an eggs, peanut butter toast and kiddie coffee (coffee, chocolate milk, whipped cream). I made his egg while Mindy made him some toast. Before I could head upstairs for a shower, Lane and Rocky were up and downstairs. Mindy offered them the waffles she made a day earlier.
I was downstairs again after a shower by 9am. Mindy’s spirits were as high as they’ve been in some time. I am sure the colonoscopy thing was weighing on her some. Said she planned to make cookies and color eggs with all the kids during the day. She planned to finish Lindsey’s laundry too. All of that would afford us a quiet, uninterrupted kidless weekend. While paying bills online, I was pleasantly surprised to see that our tax return deposited, and that after only one week. Before heading off to work I confirmed what time Mindy expected her college friend Krista to be at our home that evening. 630pm. She asked Landon and Rocky to walk Eiknarf. Landon was more than eager to do it. Rocky, on the other hand, was pushing back. Mindy asserted herself and he jumped into action.
I let the Accord warm for a couple minutes before heading out. The boys were already on their way back with the pug as I backed down the driveway. Arrived at the office near 935am. Because I worked about 11 hours on Wednesday, I planned to work only 6 or 7 on Friday. The office was really quiet. It seems most folks planned a four day weekend for the Easter holiday. A couple others were working from home. I felt like I had the entire 6th floor to myself.
I did the usual Friday reports as well as taking care of a few urgent escalations, too. The early part of my day was more than challenging. Mindy sent a text and pic near 2pm of all the kids making cut-out cookies. I stayed focused and busy all afternoon, finding time to squeeze in all my administrative tasks starting at around 3pm. As planned, I was able to leave the office for home around 420pm.
Talked with Mindy on my drive home. Lindsey and the boys were already gone as were the other overnight guests. Jacob & Bella were still at home, but Jimaken was on his way. We talked though most of my brief commute. Mindy had the house in ship shape. You’d be hard pressed to believe there were 7 kids there that day.
Jimaken was there in short order to get the kids. He planned to drop the kids off at Gloria’s place near 6pm on Sunday. It was somewhere close to 5pm. After some snacks, I told Mindy that I wanted to take a nap. At the same time, she got changed into clothes more fitting for dinner out with friends. I laid in bed for as long as 30 minutes, but actually slept for no more than 10 minutes. Regardless, I felt refreshed.
I changed into my black cashmere sweater but decided to stay in the jeans I wore to work.
It was 610pm. Mindy and I hung out in the kitchen waiting for Krista and Shane to show up. They showed up real close to 630pm. We haven’t seen Krista since July 2011, the week I bought my Accord. First time meeting her husband Shane. Mindy made dinner reservations for 730pm at 229. Mindy, Krista and Shane enjoyed a glass of wine while chatting. I stuck with water. Mindy walked Shane out back to see the kids treehouse. We left for dinner around 705pm. I drove us in the Accord.
We parked at a meter at the southend of Bicentennial Park. We walked to the waterfront before heading inside the restaurant. We chose 229 so they could get some sense of our downtown renaissance. Natascia was our server. I’d seen her there before but this was her first time taking care of us. We were seated at or close to the same table we sat at the last time we were in with David and Anita.
Mindy and I ordered the 2X Southern Tier Stout they had on tap. Shane selected the Great Lakes seasonal. Krista went with a glass of wine. Mindy ordered appetizers for all of us to share – 4 friends and pretzel bread. They changed up the four friends a little. Now, instead of deviled eggs, it comes with Greek meatballs and sauce to complement the stuffed dates, peppered cashews, pepperoni and spicy pickled veggies.
Entrée-wise, Mindy went with the scallops, Shane the seafood trio, me the blackened mahi, and Krista the fried chicken. I stuck with the one beer since we planned to stop at CBC before heading home. My dinner was delicious. Everybody enjoyed their meal. It must’ve been somewhere close to 9pm when we paid our bill (I picked up the check) and headed around the corner to CBC.
Given the hour, the dinner rush was over at CBC. As a consequence, we got a up close parking spot and four sets next to one another at the bar. Add to that, Kate and Vince were tending bar, our two favorites. After introducing our friends, Vince poured us three Bodhi’s and a fru-fru drink for Krista. She’s not a beer girl.
Talked with Shane at length. I found him interesting, wise, and with varied tastes, a real pleasure to be around. With their only son a junior in high school, they’re in the process of weighing the pro and cons of many different cities to relocate to once he’s off to college. We selfishly campaigned for Salt Lake.
Passively, we watched the end of both Friday night NCAA tournament games. Michigan won a thriller that with only a few minutes remaining looked like they were going down easily. We ended up closing down the place. I had a total of three Bodhi’s after Mindy shared that she was driving us home.
Krista and Shane came in for a night cap where we talked and polished off the last of a growler of Bodhi from two weeks ago. I think it was close to 2am when they headed for Westerville where they’re staying with her sister and brother-in-law. Mindy and I headed right to bed.

Peaking at her Innards
I decided the night before that 6am was the time I needed to be up and out of bed in order to carry out my morning routine and still get Mindy to Riverside hospital by 815am. To that end, I was up just before that at 555am. I quickly started some coffee then whipped out calisthenics. It was 615am when I headed to the PC with coffee.
I spent more time fooling around online than perhaps I should’ve. I had to rush through a stretch and meditation to get out the door for my run by 650am. I didn’t bother taking Mindy coffee. She wasn’t allowed any. During my run I decided to trim it back a mile to just three. It was clear but still chilly and below freezing, about 28 degrees.
Back at the house by 720a, Mindy was out of the shower and getting dressed. I took a quick shower and was dressed and ready by 740am. I asked Mindy what time we needed to leave. She suggested 750am. Yikes! I woofed down a leftover waffle and then packed a very light lunch. Since I planned to work from the waiting room, I packed up all my gear as though I was leaving for work.
At Mindy’s prompting, I warmed the Accord. We left the house at 750am just as she suggested. We took the back way purposefully avoiding the freeway, taking Trabue to Riverside Dr to Lane and then Tremont to Kenny to North Broadway. We encountered only one tiny slowdown on Tremont near a school. Not a problem, though. Got Mindy to the hospital right on time. The green parking garage was very contiguous to the building and wing she needed to visit. They have a nice Tim Horton’s right inside the door. We didn’t stop.
The wait wasn’t long at all. Called Mindy back after 5 minutes. I went ahead and logged onto my laptop. There was a 930a call that I needed to join and several important issues going on that I needed to help address. One of the nurses came after me 10-15 minutes later. I was rejoined with Mindy who was prepped and just about ready to be wheeled off. We visited for a few, me still joking about the smiley face we drew on her butt. Wouldn’t the doctor be surprised! Soon the nurse returned to fetch Mindy and told me that I needed to go to the bar, uh, I mean the waiting room. Said she’d come get me as soon as they were done.
While Mindy was in having her smiley face evaluated, I joined that call as well as placing a couple others. I was busy working away when they came after me again approximately 30 minutes later. They explained that Mindy would almost certainly have some amnesia and might ask the same things over. Sure enough. She was stoned and barely conscious. The actual doctor was there to greet me and share that she was all clear. No polyps and no cancer. That was relief.
I checked out and then photo’d her vitals displayed on a monitor next to her rolling bed. I noted that they anesthetized her with 5mg versed and 100mg of Fentanyl. Took a photo of Mindy to show her later. The nurse returned about every ten minutes as the meds began to wear off. Slowly but surely Mindy became more and more coherent. She asked me more than once if I talked with the doctor. Soon they had Mindy sitting up in the bed. I was surprised when Mindy asked for the coffee the doctor poured for actually before the procedure and promised she could have it waiting when she came to. That was sweet!
The nurse went over all the details of the colonoscopy, including answering all of Mindy’s questions. Apparently the only thing they found was some very small diverticula on the large intestine, but said they were not the source of her issues. They took a biopsy of tissue to have it analyzed for anything cellular or possibly even microscopic. Immediately my thoughts turned to all the antibiotics Mindy’s taken over the years I’ve known her. That could very well be the source of her issues. Antibiotics destroy good (necessary) bacteria too. According to the nurse, we’ll know in about two weeks. I was pleased to see that photos accompanied Mindy’s packet. Now we can compare colons. Personally, I think mine is much better looking.
It was around 1115a when Mindy was able to get dressed and walk out on her own power. Of course they said she couldn’t drive, drink, or operate machinery until the following day. That’s good because she’s got a lot of laundry to do. She seemed almost undaunted with the walk to the car, though complained of being tired. Of course she also complained of being hungry. Asked that I make her macaroni and cheese once at home. She hadn’t eaten anything since Tuesday’s dinner.
Mindy called her mom asking if she could bring Bella home sometime during the afternoon. She agreed to. At home, I quickly started Mindy’s mac & cheese. Jacob soon joined us downstairs. Took about 20 minutes to prep the mac and cheese. I left for the office once Mindy was set with her lunch. I’m thinking that was near 1215pm.
Arrived at the office and immediately kicked into gear. Talked with both my boss and a peer. Despite the late arrival into the office, the afternoon seemed to drag. But it wasn’t because I wasn’t busy. No sir! I was very busy. Mindy called late afternoon but I was in the middle of a conference call. I had a lot going on and ended up at the office until after 530pm. Called Mindy on my way home. Darwin agreed to take Bella to gymnastics. I would then pick both kids up at 8pm. Mindy reminded me that I needed to pick Jacob up from soccer too. Oh yeah. Forgot that she couldn’t drive. Arrived home around 6pm.
Mindy heated some of the leftover chicken and pasta - Tuesday’s dinner. That didn’t sound good to me. But eventually I decided to stuff some of in a burrito shell adding cheese, sour cream, and green hot sauce. It was very tasty.
It was about 645pm. The evening was very sunny though still a little chilly -46 degrees. Mindy suggested we take a walk. Why not? We leashed up the pug and headed out. Walked for about 15-20 minutes. Lots of people out for a stroll. Asked Mindy what time we needed to leave for Jacob. Soccer practice over at 730pm. We left the house near 712pm taking the Pilot.
Arrived at the Hilliard Soccer complex at 733pm. Almost empty save for a girls’ team just finishing up their practice. Uh-oh! Mindy suggested we drive over to the other soccer field just east of where we were. Sure enough, that’s where Jacob was. One of the parents was giving him a ride over to the complex we just left. Apparently others made the same mistake.
Jacob espoused how hungry he was. Mindy suggested that we might be able to stop but not until after we picked up Bella and Lane. By then it was 740pm. We figured to be a few minutes late getting to the gym. We took Hilliard-Rome to 70E to 270S. A little slow but we managed to get to the gym right at 8pm. The kids seemed in no hurry to end the open gym session, at least not until Kelly declared the gym closed and turned off the lights. Mindy chatted with Kelly a little while Bella and Lane dashed out to the car.
Stopped at Wendy’s on the drive home. Fed all the kids. Jacob and Lane both ordered a spicy chicken sandwich. Bella ordered chicken nuggets. We were expecting Lindsey to drop the boys at the house at 830pm. They would be staying the night and then all day Friday while Lindsey works. Mindy felt it far easier for them to stay the night thus not being dropped off at 615am and waking everyone. She also suggested Lindsey bring her laundry so she could knock it out too. That’s a lot of work but will afford us a completely kid free weekend.
Jacob invited Lane to spend the night as well. In turn, Bella asked if Makayla could stay. Yes and yes. We dropped Lane at home so he could ask his parents and then get a shower. Said he needed one badly. It wasn’t long before we had a house full of kids, seven to be exact: Jacob, Bella, Rocky, Landon, Lane, Makayla, Emily. I fell asleep watching some Jesus show on History Channel. I think it was called something like, Jesus, How he got his Power. Headed for bed at 1010p.

Internal Cleansing Begins
I purposefully let myself sleep a little late, or until 545am. Other than me, no one else needed to be up. Completed a full complement of exercises, including push-ups. Headed to the PC with coffee near 6am
Where I spent a solid 30 minutes online. Meditation and stretching were next. Finished both of those by 645am and then dressed and left for a run.
It was 32 degrees with light snow, close to an inch of fresh stuff. Ran the full 4.1 miles despite slightly tired legs. Little wonder after three days of skiing. I felt alright though. Back home close to 730am. Started breakfast and packed a light lunch. Headed to the shower near 8am. Took Mindy a cup of coffee.
Mindy opted to remain in bed after my shower. I enjoyed another cup of coffee while the Accord warmed in the driveway. Left for New Albany near 840am. Made good time zooming across town and then north on 270. Arrived near 910am.
Customer cancelled the 10am call. No pressing issues, which was extremely good news. Still had a very busy day. Didn’t even take lunch. Worked straight through. Left the office near 5pm. Called Mindy once I was safely merged onto 270NW. Mindy shared that she was starting her colonoscopy prep as planned and wouldn’t be making dinner. She took Bella to her mom’s where she planned to spend the night. Jacob elected to stay home. Would be home alone Thursday AM while she an I headed to the appointment at Riverside hospital.
Once home I snacked on nuts and cheese, but then made a turkey brat covered with leftover taco meat and shredded cheese. It was really good! It wasn’t long before Mindy drank the first batch of prep juice! I suggested that I might end up sleeping in the guest room to avoid the inevitable. She laughed. It wasn’t too long before she was giving all the commodes a real workout.
At some point fairly early she headed to the bedroom to watch TV from bed. She came downstairs several times to visit. I spent most of the early evening playing around online until I got a work related escalation. Somewhat surprisingly, Jacob joined his momma in bed watching TV. More than once he shared how bored he was. I ended up working from home until after 10pm. By then my mind was fried. I wanted nothing more than my pillow. I headed up to bed where Mindy and Jacob were still watching TV.
Jacob soon bailed for his own room and I jumped into bed even while Mindy kept watching TV. I was out within 10 minutes.

Normalcy's Return
I was up at 535am feeling rested and ready to go. Amazing what 8 hours of sleep along with no alcoholic beverages the night before will do. I was downstairs a few minutes later fully engaged in calisthenics. Perhaps the 5+ hour drive home, not real sure, but my neck and shoulder were stiff again too.
After exercise I poured some coffee then played on my PC for 25 minutes. Felt good to relax and play. Because neither Mindy nor the kids needed to be up, I didn’t wake them. I did meditation and a stretch near 645a. Dressed and left for a run around 7a. Ran the full 4.1 miles. My legs/feet might’ve been a tad tired but all in all in pretty good shape. The trash truck was by while I was off on my run.
Back at the house I pulled the trash can back to its resting place then headed in to start my breakfast. Fried three eggs despite Eiknarf still sleeping upstairs with Bella. I set her egg aside for later. After packing a light lunch I headed upstairs for a shower. I took coffee for Mindy as well.
I was showered and dressed by 820a. Mindy got up and joined me downstairs for a few minutes before I left for work. I asked about gas in the Accord after remembering that it was low before she took it to work last Friday. She shared that the low fuel light came on just before she arrived home on Friday. Oops! I was worried about needing to warm and defrost the car, let alone making it to the gas station. I had no choice but to warm the car as it was coated in frozen snow. I let it warm only long enough to scrape away the bulk of it before leaving for the office.
I left concerned about making it to the gas station. Out of the subdivision I opted for Thornton’s, which is a little further than Circle K but on my way. Aside from a lady driving ridiculously slow, there wasn’t any traffic. Move it, lady!
Felt a sense of relief as I pulled into Thornton’s and up to the pumps. Fiddled with my card before I realized that the pump I was at had a cash-only stickem’ on it. Dang it! I quickly pulled my car around to another pump other side of the island. Same damn thing! Are you kidding me? This never happens. A cursory glance around revealed the same sign hanging on every single pump. Damn it! Actually, I let a couple f bombs fly. What are the odds? Somebody somewhere had to be getting a kick out of all this.
I drove off back towards home and Circle K. I called Mindy along the way just in case I ran out of gas. Wanted her to be ready to help me. She didn’t immediately answer, and I was sure I was going to VM when she finally answered. She obviously found my predicament a bit more humorous than I did. She was in the middle of walking the pug, but offered to come after me should I need her.
I made it to Circle K for a fill-up. The car took 16.2 gallons for a 16 gallon tank. I had to be running on fumes! Off to work. I called Mindy again just to let her know that the crisis was averted. Arrived at the office near 9am.
Even though I was off for just one work day, it felt more like a week. Took a while it get back into the swing of things. In fact, it took almost the entire day. The word of the day was catch-up. Lucky for me, a regularly scheduled customer call got cancelled. That provided me a little breathing room.
The day went fast. By late afternoon I noticed that cloudy skies had given way to sunshine and most of the snow had melted. That’s what happens with spring snow - easy come easy go. Talked with Mindy mid-day. We talked mostly about how to address some of the issues we had with Jacob over the weekend.
I called Darwin around 4pm to remind him that I was taking Lane to gymnastics when picking up Bella. He shared that Lane was going at the same time as Bella this week – spring break hours. I offered that we would take and pick-up. He was at work at Home Depot. Suggested we call Connie to sort it out. I called Mindy real quick and asked her to call Connie.
I left the office near 5pm and called Mindy along the way. Said she left a message for Connie to call her back. Mindy was busy with dinner. We didn’t talk long. Arrived home by 515pm. Like everywhere else. almost all of the snow had melted away. And while it was chilly, it still felt a bit like spring with the late afternoon sunshine.
Mindy was busy at the stove whipping up some chicken concoction. The house was gleaming. She obviously spent some time cleaning during the day. She shared that she got a hold of Connie. Connie agreed to run the kids to gymnastics of we would do the pick-up. Said that would work far better for her. Connie planned to stop at Chipotle along the way. Mindy planned to send Bella with her own money.
Connie showed up around 535pm. Jacob was soon home from playing outside. The three of us sat for dinner around 545pm. Dinner was really good; penne pasta, chicken breast, tomato and spinach. Yum! Jacob was off to play with his friends again soon after dinner. Mindy helped with clean-up while I toiled with Jacob’s new Nerf basketball hoop. Mindy took over attaching the net while took over washing the dinner pans.
During dinner, Mindy mentioned that Joe-Joe was stopping by for a visit. He showed up just as we finished cleaning up the kitchen. He and Mindy partook in some wine. Had I not needed to go after the kids at gymnastics, I might’ve poured myself a pint of beer. Instead, I enjoyed only water. We visited with Joe until I needed to leave. It was 720p when I walked out the door. Made good time, arriving at 731pm. I wondered if the kids thought I forgot them.
Inside, it was everything but. Instead, they were playing around on the gym equipment. I soon learned that it was open gym – no real practice. I called for Bella and Lane to leave. Lane let me know that practice was until 8pm. Not wanting to disappoint, I agreed to wait while they continued playing. That made Bella happy too. As for Lane, he seemed to be doing more flirting than real gymnastics. Though I did see him do some amazing stuff on the mini-tramp. He’s a natural.
Come 8p, Kelly had to holler to the kids to stop. They were having fun. We left for home around 805pm. Joe-Joe was still at the house as we passed on our way to drop Lane. Bella asked that I drop her at home first. I could only laugh. Dropped Lane then headed for home. By then it was approaching 830pm. I was tired. Mindy and Joe were still working on a bottle of wine. Bella asked if she could have Kayla spend the night. After Mindy agreed, Bella gave Kayla a call. Sounded like it was a go. Mindy shared that Jacob was staying the night with one of his neighborhood friends. Cody, I think. Joe stuck around visiting until almost 10p. We’ll see him along with the rest of the family on Easter Sunday.
Mindy and I headed to be as soon as Joe pulled away. I was really tired.

The Completion of a 3 month Ski Season
Was up at 730am after sleeping rather well. I might’ve woken once or twice during the overnight to use the bathroom. I brushed my teeth then slipped into my running clothes. I gave Mindy a hug then headed to the Tamarack lobby where I enjoyed a cup of coffee before heading out for a run.
It was cloudy and 27 degrees with just a trace of fresh snow on the sidewalk. I felt really good as I proceeded down Holiday Valley Rd to 219N and into Ellicottville. Encountered a few slippery spots but all in all the walks were in great shape for running. The last ¼ mile back up the hill to the Tamarack was trying just as was the two previous mornings. Was gone for about 40 minutes total.
Back in the room, Mindy was still asleep in bed. No coffee brewed. I took a few minutes to get the coffee going then ducked into the shower. The plan was to check out of our room, load the Pilot, then ski for a while. We didn’t have a specific departure time in mind. Instead, whenever we felt like it.
Jacob moaned about skiing. Asked if we could simply go home. Nope! Took us about an hour to ready for a day on the slopes, pack, and load. Mindy went to the lobby to redeem our free ski coupons while Jacob and I loaded to the Pilot with everything minus our immediate ski gear. While everyone else headed to ski check, I checked out of our condo via the front desk. It was near 1015am when we headed up an almost empty Mardi Gras lift for the day’s first run.
It had been snowing very lightly all morning but almost on queue, it got much heavier. Felt like a fresh inch or more on the slopes. No grinding ice sound! We skied Independence first. It was fun but perhaps a little slow due to the fresh untracked snow. There were only six lifts in operation: Mardi Gras, Sunrise, Cindy’s, Morning Star, Yodeler, and Creekside. We skied Laurel just to see if they might’ve decided to open Tannenbaum. Nope! We skied Champagne and Yodeler several times. Awesome! The snow was once again amazing!
We did Morning Star then the new Moonshadow roller/terrain trail. It was an absolute hoot! We skied for about 1.75 hours before taking a lunch break at the HV Lodge. Before heading in for food, we popped in the gift shop where I bought an ‘EVL’ sticker for the Thule. We were some of the first to populate the HV Lodge cafeteria, but it filled up fast just after we sat down. There we enjoyed burgers, fries, and drink. After about 45 minutes we were back out for our last runs of the season.
We skied Champagne and Yodeler a few more times and then one last run down Mardi Gras, though the kids took Northwind. And just like that, we were done. No regrets! By all accounts, an excellent ski season. Carried our skis into the Tamarack and out to the underground parking garage where we degeared, loaded the Thule, changed into comfy commute clothes, then hit the road for home.
We hit the road at 117pm and stopped 10 miles up the road in Salamanca to fill the gas tank. It snowed but never coated the highway all way into Erie. Even still, we were able to maintain about 70mph on I-86/I-90. We didn’t stop again until the rest area just south of Alum Creek and rt 36. Once on 270, we encountered bumper to bumper traffic due to a rush hour collision near the Rt 23 exit. Mindy phoned Gloria from Delaware to let her know that we were about 30 minutes out. Our plan was to pick-up the pug before heading home.
We arrived at Gloria’s house near 630pm. Eiknarf was elated to see us. After a brief visit, we headed for home, but not before Mindy ordered a Minelli’s pizza for pick-up. The pizza was ready when we got there, though the forgot the extra cheese, Gave us a $3.50 discount. Before digging into dinner, Mindy insisted that everybody help carry in the gear. And just like our Xmas HV trip. We had to shovel the driveway first. Still about an inch of fresh slippery snow.
We made a human chain to make the unloading efficient. I unloaded the Pilot and handed off to Jacob who carried to Bella waiting just inside the door. She and Mindy toted ski gear to the basement. All that took no more than 15-20 minutes. While the kids dug into the pizza, Mindy headed upstairs for a shower. And while she showered, I carried the heavy suitcase and duffle up the stairs.
I enjoyed some pizza, too, but then continued our unpacking effort unloading the two coolers then unpacking my personal electronics from the back pack. When I finished, everything was put away. Just a few remnants for Mindy to deal with on Tuesday. I unloaded all of my clothes and put away anything unused and clean and even washed my running clothes for a fresh start the following morning.
Just like that we were back in our groove. Makayla called Bella soon after we arrived home asking her to spend the night. Mindy and I agreed that she needed to stay home and get a good night’s rest but agreed to a sleepover the following night. Bella was OK with that.
I poured a glass of ice water and sunk into the sofa for a little Science Channel. It was 9pm in a hurry. Mindy was playing on her laptop when I declared it my bedtime. Despite being on spring break, she soon followed. I am certain that we were both out cold before 930pm.

Lovin' Life in the Valley
I woke several times during the night. At one point I woke with reflux, no doubt a byproduct of those extra hot wings. But I remembered to try the rollover on the left side trick. That worked like a charm. Like the day before, I slipped off to the bathroom to brush my teeth and change into my running clothes sometime between 7-730am.
I enjoyed a quick cup of coffee in the lobby before heading off on my run. It was a gorgeous clear morning, the sun just beginning to creep up over the eastern hills. The runs looked awesome completely groomed and ready for another day of skiing. I ran the same trail into town and by the EBC and Balloons then back. There were a few icy patches on the sidewalk but all in all a very clean surface.
Back in the room shortly after 8am, Mindy once again had a pot of coffee on and was up and in the shower. Our plan was similar to the day before. We would ski for a while then head to one of the lodges for a meal. I woofed down a banana and a cheese stick in the room. Bottom line, we were on our way up Mardi Gras by 930am.
We joked about not taking Holiday Run. Can’t recall in what order, but we skied for 2.5 hours before taking a break. Much like the day before, we were all over the park, including back on the Eagle lift runs. I even talked Mindy into skiing the trees. She did well. This time we took our break in Yodeler. It wasn’t quite noon so the women working the bar told me I’d have to wait before she could pour a beer. OK. We went downstairs after food. By the time were back up with our trays it was after 12noon. I bought a EBC Pale Ale for me and a Cabernet for Mindy.
I was hungry and woofed down a cheese burger and fries. I also ate half of a giant chocolate chip cookie. Mindy insisted we head up Tannenbaum and get a few family pictures. And unlike most other times, she wanted to be the photographer so I could be in the pictures. You’d think we were pulling the kids teeth, especially Jacob. He was a pill to say the least.
He made an awfully disparaging remark to his mother when she asked that he move into the frame. Frankly, I couldn’t believe my ears. I opted not to say anything, fairly certain Mindy didn’t hear it. I planned to talk to him about it later. I’m quite sure that had I said something to her about it then she might’ve clocked him. He was trying that hard to get on her nerves.
After a few more runs the kids were fussing about whatever runs we took them on. I suggested that we simply unleash the kids to go ski some on their own. That way we could have fun and so could they. As it was, no one was enjoying the company. Mindy agreed and so did the kids. Mindy and I skied Moonshadow with its new terrain features, which include the old roller but with a twisting turning trail that includes high banking turns. Awesome! We skied in tentatively, having never skied it before, but enjoyed the heck out of it. At some point I shared with Mindy the comment Jacob made when she was taking photos. Said she didn’t hear it exactly, but knew he said something not so nice. Wanted to know why I didn’t deal with it on the spot then asked for my help dealing with it moving forward. I shared that I didn’t want to deal with it while angry. Instead, think about the best approach to bring about change. She agreed. Promised I would handle it while alone with Jacob later. If I’ve learned anything about his nature, he responds far better when I talk to him one on one and give him the space to make the right choice on his own.
By coincidence, we ended up in line with the kids after about an hour skiing by ourselves. They were in far better spirits an eager to share the runs they had made. Jacob asked about the Buckeye game. Wanted to know who won. I eventually shared that the Buckeyes won, but only after teasing him about the score a little. They decided to stick with us again, so we skied Champagne, Edelweiss and Yodeler. All were superfast and fun! Convinced them to try Moonshadow with us, but Jacob was pooh-poohing all the way there. I think Mindy and I knew what was going to happen. Essentially he was bent on it not being fun, and for him, and Bella who was watching his every response, it wasn’t.
Back to Edelweiss where were all skied fast. At the bottom it’s very difficult to get back in line and on the lift due to no room. Apparently some older guy gave Bella an earful about ditching and being rude as she tried to hurry into line with the rest of us. She was flustered and damn near fell off the lift. It was all I could do to snatch her up to safety. But once she was safely in the seat she bit my head off by telling me not to touch her. Yikes! What? I grabbed her leg and curtly shared that I was only trying to save her from imminent peril. At the top of the lift, the kids skied away from the two of us again. I suggested we just let them. Mindy concurred. Told them to meet us at the condo near 430pm.
Mindy and I enjoyed the rest of our afternoon of skiing. We did Falcon again, this time both of us taking a spill, me near the bottom after waiting for Mindy to collect herself after falling near the top. We talked about the kids quite a bit. Mindy was worried about Jacob taking good care of Bella while they’re off alone. I assured her that when they’re alone he does in fact take good care of her. It’s only in front of us that he picks on her almost incessantly. They’re getting to the age where they need a little space. What kids wants to hang with their parents all day long, especially Jacob? It’s live and learn, balancing the right amount of family time and alone time. Of course nothing justifies the rude comments Jacob’s likes to toss out like darts towards Mindy.
Mindy and I bagged it as the fun lifts (Yodeler, Eagle) closed at 4pm. Rather than ride Mardi Gras and Cindy’s till 430pm, we headed back to the room. We looked around for the kids and didn’t see them anywhere. Actually, we expected to find them waiting on the bench by ski check since both talked about being tired much earlier. Much to our surprise, no kids. We spent about a half hour in the room before we headed out in our comfy clothes where we could see Mardi Gras and Cindy’s. All the lifts were about to close. Sure enough, they were some of the last batch of skier to come down the mountain – Northwind, one of their favorite runs.
We waited on the ski check bench. Back in the room Mindy, Bella and I prepared for the hot tub. Jacob didn’t want to go this time. He was more interested in the NCAA tournament. I understood that. This time we figured out that the farther hot tub was much warmer than the other. We got in it. There we met a guy and his two boys from Cleveland. We also met a mom and daughter from West Virginia. This girl was really beautiful and seemingly had all the tools (pretty, smart, and determined). Wants to go into law.
The two teenage boys were speechless. Learned she’s a competitive skier. Been all over, including our own Mad River Mt.for competitions. She also spent time at Wendell’ski camp in Oregon.
After an hour of hot tub and sauna we headed back to our room. While Mindy took a shower, I took the opportunity to talk to both kids about the way they acted towards their mom earlier – with a lack of gratitude and disrespect. Bella tried pinning it all on Jacob, but soon confessed to her part. I only suggested to Jacob that he owed his mother a hart felt apology fort the disparaging comments he made on Tannenbaum. He knew which one I meant, but told me he didn’t have a heartfelt apology. I only added that he needs to be a positive role model for Bella and how it was obvious he was influencing her negatively with his earlier actions. I could tell that I was getting through. Again, I wasn’t forcing an apology. Instead, merely suggesting it a wise idea.
Later, while I was brushing up, Mindy shared that Jacob apologized for his behavior. I was pleased to learn that and I know how much it meant to Mindy. Bella, of course, apologized too. It’s not an excuse, but she’s at an age where she follows Jacob’s lead. We headed to John Harvard’s for dinner.
We were seated at a corner table, one we sat at over Xmas with brother Glenn Xmas 2010. Bailey was our server. She told us that this was her first day. Yikes! She was very pleasant but also slow and forgetful. We ordered drinks then calamari as an appetizer. We appreciate Bailey’s honesty, telling us she forgot this but would make it up to us.
Finally came around for our food order. Mindy and I ordered one of their specials – the filet mignon. We didn’t even ask the price, though perhaps we should’ve. Bella ordered the grilled cheese from the kids menu. Jacob ordered a quesadilla. We saw that other customers were given bread with dipping sauce. When I ordered a 2nd beer, Mindy asked for some of the yummy bread for our table too.
We became a little disenfranchised when others who came in as much as 2030 minutes after us were already served their dinners. By then we had gotten two apologies from Bailey and then one from the restaurant manager. We politely dismissed their offer for some sort of compensation, he suggesting possibly a free desert. When our entrées finally arrived they looked terrific! The filets were large and extra thick served over a bed of smashed potatoes with some lovely Brussels sprouts.
We each ordered our filets medium rare. That as it turned out, was a big mistake. Mindy’s was almost purple in the center. She calmly flagged down Bailey to have her steak cooked a bit more. I opted to stick with mine. It was cooked far more than Mindy’s but even still a bit too raw in the center. The manager brought her steak back once again apologizing profusely and offering some compensation for our trouble – perhaps even a desert. Really? Desert! Come on, dude!
Mindy’s steak was now cut in half but still purple. She couldn’t eat anymore. We’d been there now for about 90 minutes. We simply asked for a box and our check. I was a little surprised to see that the steaks were $35. We agreed that the undercooked steaks weren’t Bailey’s fault. Her problem was that she was new. Didn’t know the ropes. We tipped her well given the circumstances but not the typical Jimindy tip. Meanwhile, I was more than happy to take the filet back to our room thinking it would make a delicious breakfast after microwaving it for a minute or two.
Bella asked if I would take her to the pool after dinner. Mindy said she needed to sleep. Mindy hoped in bed. I headed to the pool with Bella. I took a beer in a plastic cup. Bella swam for about 30 minutes indoors and out. The indoor pool area was too warm and steamy. Twice I had to head outside to get fresh air. Ahh, that felt heavenly.
Back in the room, Mindy was all but asleep. We watched a little TV but quickly fell asleep. Again, lights out before 10pm.

Fabulous Snow - Great Skiing - Clear Goggle Day
Woke a few times during the night but managed to get quickly back to sleep. Jacob was on the sleeper sofa and Bella at the foot of that bed preferring to use to the sofa cushions as her own private bed. I got up for keeps around 7am and headed into the bathroom to brush my teeth then garb up for a run. Twenty minutes later I headed out the door after alerting Mindy that I was heading out.
I noticed they had two large carafe’s of Starbucks in the lobby. I couldn’t resist. I poured and enjoyed a quick cup before heading out for a run. It was good! I briefly stretched my legs on a bench just outside the Tamarack door then trotted off on my run figuring to take the sidewalk route into town. There was little more than a dusting of snow covering the walk for most of the way. Ellicottville is one of the few towns that actually provides snow removal for the city’s main sidewalks.
The run was enjoyable and the view quite picturesque. The town looks like a Xmas card and in mid-winter form. Had to be between 12-18” of snow piled up in the yards. Was back in the room near 8am. I was pleasantly surprised to find Mindy not only up, but that she’d also made a pot of coffee. She was already prepping for a day on the slopes.
The kids were another story, though Bella was up shortly thereafter. Both, however, were slow to motivate into their ski gear. Originally, we talked about walking next door to get breakfast from the cafeteria at the new HV lodge. But the more we discussed it, it made more sense to eat a banana in the room, go ski a few runs, and then end up at the lodge for food. Bella and I each ate a little bit of leftover pizza in the room.
Jacob and I headed out to the Pilot at 915am to unload our skis. Everybody else was already in their full gear. I was in my ski gear too save for ski boots. I needed to stay in street shoes so I could climb up to the Thule. Mindy hung with my skis while I ran my shoes back to the room, which was just down the hall from ski check – convenient!
We were in line and heading up Mardi Gras by 945am. Not bad. By the way, it was 26 degrees and snowing lightly. We let the kids pick the first run. Somewhat surprisingly, they picked Mardi Gras to Holiday Run. It wouldn’t have been my pick but hey. I reminded them that we’d either have to take the Chute lift back up or peg to Yodeler since everybody wanted to do Independence and Champagne.
First run down Mardi Gras to Holiday Run. The snow was awesome, groomed with a soft surface about 3-4” deep. A little slow, however. We didn’t have near the speed to ski to Yodeler. Instead, we had to peg. Jacob insisted we simply take the Chute, but that would mean we’d have to ski down Chute or Edelweiss. I didn’t think Mindy would be ready for that just yet. We laughed about our tough peg to Yodeler – lessoned learned.
At Yodeler they were setting up for the afternoon’s pond skimming event. And as a result, there was already a large contingent of skiers riding up the lift. The kids and I skied Independence then headed over to Morning Star to find Mindy, who despite confirming we were skiing Independence headed over to Morning Star. The kids guessed that she was upset, though that wasn’t the case. Instead, she had a brain fart.
After our run down Independence we headed back up and then over to Morning Star. We didn’t find Mindy until our 2nd run there. After one more run down M.S, we rode up Eagle and skied Falcon and Eagle a handful of times. The snow was ideal, soft and moderately fast. And being a veteran of HV, I knew that I could find the powder caches along the edges of those trails. It was absolutely like heaven over there!
Before taking a break, we skied Fidler’s Elbow, one of only a few runs we’d never tried before. It was fun. Ends up back at M.S. and Eagle. From there we skied another never previously before skied, Day’s End back to the base lodge area and a break in HV lodge. We skied fairly hard for about 2.5 -3hours.
We sad and surprised to learn that the T-Bar was shut down for the season. That’s the bar on the top floor. However, the ULR bar was opened, which is down by the cafeteria. I ordered two spicy bloody Mary’s, watching carefully what she used to spice ‘em up. The secret ingredient was horseradish. Ah-hah!
The kids and Mindy headed for food. I decided not to order anything to eat, knowing all too well that Bella wouldn’t finish hers, whatever it was. I drank about a third of my bloody Mary then gave the rest to Mindy. It was good, just wasn’t hitting the spot. I went back to the bar for a Southern Tier IPA. Now we’re talking!
As expected, Bella didn’t finish her cheese burger and barely touched her curly fries. I also had a bite or two of Mindy’s pork tenderloin sandwich. A friendly guy from the Buffalo area came over to chat with us. A bit too forward – too chatty for me. But in the end, he was harmless. We took about an hour’s break then headed out again.
We skied most of the black chutes off Mardi Gras, spending a lot of time on Champagne, Edelweiss, and Yodeler. And for the first time ever, we skied in the trees top to bottom. That was fun & invigorating. I can’t say enough about the conditions, for my money perhaps the best all-around snow conditions ever at HV. And we’ve compiled quite the number of HV ski days over the past five years (about 30). Mindy and I polished off a flask of sumpin-sumpin’. Yum!!!
We took another break around 230pm only this time in the room. Indy and I both drank a quick beer. The kids opted to stay in the room. Mindy and I headed back out for more fun. Told the kids to call if they had a change of heart. We did countless runs leading up to 430pm when they closed Morning Star on us after we skied to the base. We took Day’s End back thinking we’d do Mardi Gras since we knew all the smaller lifts closed at 4-430pm. We were shocked then when they shut down Mardi Gras at 430pm too. What a bummer. That left only Cindy’s and Sunrise open until 7pm. Obviously they didn’t plan for such great spring conditions let alone the number of people.
Suddenly, the line for Cindy’s was longer than I’ve ever seen it. No thanks. We took it in stride deciding to call it a day and head back to the room and then to the hot tub. After some cajoling, the kids opted to join us in the hot tub. Mindy wanted to take wine but we didn’t have a wine opener in our room She settled for a beer.
Both hot tubs were darn near full. We invaded the one least crowded. Jacob and I were in five minutes before Mindy. Bella diverted for the indoor/outdoor pool. Met lots of fun, interesting folks. Lots of ski trip conversations. Met a couple from Warren Ohio that know Mindy’s bff, Teri G.N., or at least her family. Hung in the hot tub for at least an hour or until we were pruned. Spent a few minutes in the sauna before heading back to the room.
Now about 6pm, we got cleaned up for dinner. Mindy and the kids showered. Because I showered after my run, I simply rewet and dried my hair. Our goal was to dine at Cadillac Jack’s. Mindy insisted we walk. I was down with that, though the kids tried desperately to get Mindy to change her mind and drive. Turned out, Cadillac Jack’s was closed. Happens a lot. Must’ve planned for next to no crowds. Faced with a decision, do we walk back and dine at John Harvard’s, or do we cross the street and dine at the Depot. I voted for the Depot thinking we’d eat at J.V.s Sunday night. It’s not that much farther and it wasn’t that cold – about 32 degrees.
We were seated right away and at a table away from the entrance door, which if seated nearby can leave you cold when others come in and out. Sweet! We arrived just in the nick of time. The place was full in the next 10 minutes and there were lots of people waiting for a table.
We opted for a pitcher of Southern Tier IPA while the kids drank Dr Pepper. I ordered XSFH wings. Can’t recall what the others ordered, though I know that Mindy and Jacob had onion wings with their entrees. We had a really attentive server. It took some doing, but Mindy and I polished off the pitcher of Southern Tier. Well, actually I walked home with the last cup. We were all tired even though it couldn’t have been later than 830pm. Before we settled our check, both kids enjoyed desert - Klondike bars.
Back in the room, it wasn’t long before everybody was in their PJs and in bed. And like a lot of snow ski nights, the lights were out well ahead of 10pm.

Driving the Snow Belt
Was up around 545am. The kids were off school for spring break, but Mindy still had one day to go. I completed calisthenics then enjoyed coffee at the PC for a few. After waking Mindy, I got my laptop fired up for a work at home day. From my home computer, I checked the updated weather conditions for HV. Still snowing and expecting a 3-4 more inches before it’s all said and done. A slight chance of flurries through the weekend too. I was more than happy with the HV forecast. As for home, it was expected to be clear and in the low 40s, chilly but still pleasant. However, at the time it was cold, only 23 degrees.
Bella and Makayla were going into school with Mindy. She woke them around 7am. Mindy suggested I give her mom a call before taking the pug over at lunchtime. I spent about an hour working before heading out for a run. By then Mindy and the girls had left. It was a cold run. I ran three miles and was back home close to 815am. I didn’t plan to dig into work again until 9am. I was very productive using the next 45 minutes to organize for our trip, including carrying our skis to the livingroom then all of our ski bags and boots. I also carried up a tub to use for dry goods and then brought in two small cooler we planned to take.
Spent the morning doing what I do most Fridays, working on reports. Took another break around 1030am and loaded all of our skis into the Thule. That didn’t take long at all, five minutes tops. At some point I went upstairs to check on Jacob. He was in his room lying in bed listening to music on his iTouch. Let him know that I’d be taking lunch around noon and then he and I would take the pug over to Gloria’s.
Got stuck on a work issue until about 1215pm. Hollered for Jacob then he and I headed out with the pug, but not before giving a Gloria a heads up call. I don’t call Gloria very often, so I made sure to let her know that it was me calling. Yikes, she replied by asking “what do you want?” A couple million dollars, a new battery for my tractor, and fun weekend at HV. I let her know that Jacob and I were about to head over with the pug.
Showed up at Gloria’s place about 10 minutes later. After a brief greeting, I struck up a conversation about the embezzlement fiasco currently being investigated at her church. We visited for about 10-15 minutes before heading back towards home.
We made two stops on the way home. One, at the bank drive-thru so I could get a little cash. Two, we stopped at Circle K to fill the Pilot’s gas tank, get a bag of ice, and also pick-up the winning Power Ball ticket. The Saturday drawing was for $330 million.
Jacob mentioned being hungry, and I would’ve taken him to lunch had I not been working. We just didn’t have the time to spend another hour away. We got back to the house after being gone something less than 40 minutes.
Thankfully, the afternoon was fairly quiet. Was able to take care of several administrative tasks. Around 230pm Jacob and I took five minutes to load everything into the back of the Pilot. Aside from our typical ski gear, there was only one suitcase, my large NIKE gym bag tote, a cooler, the dry good tote, and drinks. I topped off the windshield fluid too. The only things we’d need to load were personal effects and travel snacks.
I spent the rest of the afternoon working while Jacob played in his room. Mindy and the girls got home from school around 320-325pm. I asked Mindy if Makayla had somewhere to go. She reminded me that Chrissy was home. I was a little antsy about our drive to HV but not too bad. I waited to the last minute to stop working and power down. We walked out the door at 345pm. I had my Blackberry in tow just in case someone needed me for something between then and 530pm.
This time we packed enough snacks, including 4 large Wal-Mart subs to prevent any unnecessary stops. Everybody went to the potty before we left, too. As we buzzed around 270, Mindy called my dad to let him know we’d be gone for three days. He offered to put our recycling out on Monday morning. She also sent Lindsey a text letting her know we’d be gone.
Traffic got heavy as we neared the I-71 interchange. We guessed that would be the best chance for travel delays, that and the 20 mile stretch of 71N that goes from three lanes to two. Turns out, neither was an issue. We were making excellent time and the weather was ideal for driving – clear and 42 degrees. We were averaging 65mph and going 70 mph for the most part. The stretch between Columbus and 271 is longest single stretch (120 miles) and always seems to take longer than it should. After that the trip goes fast and is broken down into smaller increments (271 corridor – 40 miles, 90east to Pennsylvania stateline – 50 miles, Erie – 20 miles, 86e into NY & Lake Chautauqua – 35 miles, James town – 10 miles, Salamanca – 30 miles, and finally Ellicottville – 10 miles).
The weather began to change as we crossed over into NY state. No longer was the nice weather following from the west. Instead, there were winter clouds coming in off the lake. It helped that it stayed daylight until we reached Jamestown, NY. That’s about where it started snowing, too. Thankfully, though, it didn’t get too bad and we were able to maintain a pace of about 60 mph for the final 40 miles into Salamanca. I was shocked that no one asked to stop for a bathroom break. Bella slept for darn near the first 3 hours. Jacob, on and off. Mindy napped only briefly. The subs did the trick. They appeased everybody’s hunger.
Bottom line, we made excellent time (5 hours exactly) pulling into the Tamarack at HV at 845pm. Bella went with me inside for check-in. Room #213 actually one level below the main desk, which is on floor #3. Turned out, our slopeside room was on the same level as the underground parking. Sweet! And also just down the hallway from ski check as well as the fitness center and swimming pool. I sent Jacob for a baggage cart. He came back empty handed. I could tell he felt bad. I guess I should’ve gone with him. He’s so big I just expect him to be a lot wiser/smarter about those sort of things. Unlike his mother, he’s never one to ask.
I went back to the lobby and found one in the entrance breezeway. It only required one trip from the Pilot. Mindy was already in the room with a few carriable items. The room seemed a little small but would be just fine for its intended purpose. It didn’t take us long to get organized. Mindy unpacked her and the kids clothes into drawers. The only thing I unpacked was my running clothes, which I wisely stowed in the bathroom for an easy change come morning. Oh, I hung my shower kit in the bathroom too. Mindy I headed to John Harvard’s for a beer (up one floor). The kids didn’t want to go, but asked that we bring food back.
Felt great to pull up a stool at a somewhat crowded bar. There were 24 taps to choose from. I opted for the EBC nitrous IPA that was smooth, creamy, and best of all, hoppy! I think Mindy had wine. We spent about an hour there talking sipping beers. All totaled, I drank three pints. After the EBC nitrous, I enjoyed two Southern Tier IPAs. We also ordered a large pepperoni pizza to go. They also gave me a plastic cup to take what was left of my 3rd pint back to the room.
Back in the room the kids were quite pleased that we brought them a pizza. It was delicious. Far better than any of us expected. I don’t think we saw 11pm. Was out pretty quick after a long day and a long drive. Was very excited about the prospect of skiing in what everyone was touting as epic snow.

Spring Can Wait
I slept in late by design. Mindy wasn't going to school due to an early doctor's appointment and agreed to see Bella onto the school bus. That allowed me to sleep an extra 30 minutes without harming my schedule. I was up and downstairs just before 6am feeling fairly well rested. Whipped out sit-ups, windmills, and curls then headed to the computer with a cup of coffee. I wasn't sure what time Mindy's appointment was, so I didn't bother waking her with coffee. Figured she'd much prefer to wake naturally.
Played around online for almost an hour before I did meditation and stretch. Mindy was up and in the kitchen pouring her own coffee just after 7am. She shared that her appointment was at 930am. I dressed warmly for a run. It was a chilly 23 degrees and there was about an inch or so of snow on the ground. In fact, it started snowing again just before I headed out the door around 720am.
I felt fine, but decided to cut my run to only three miles. I was back at the house around 750am. I walked the pug who was up and seemingly eager to head outside. As soon as we were back Mindy asked what time Bella needed to be on the bus. 810am. I headed out with the two of them. Bella shared her joy that both parents were taking her to the bus stop. It was a cold wait. The sweat from my run still trapped between my jacket and wicking shirt was quickly child by the cold air. Makayla joined us at the bus stop.
We saw Rachel pull up at Chrissy's. Haven't seen her for several months. Said hello and asked if she was there to change Chrissy, who's still convalescing after recent knee surgery. :) Bus arrived around 820am. Mindy, Eiknarf and I hustled back to the house where I whipped up a three egg plain omelet while Mindy hit the shower. After my breakfast, I got a shower. I was dressed and ready to leave the house around 915am. Mindy left before me, though we were ready around the same time. I stopped at the bank on my way into the office to deposit a check from Mindy.
Arrived at the office near 940am. Didn't take long to get settled. With no meetings/calls on my calendar, I dedicated most of my day to sharpening the saw - taking an online technical training class that I've been interested in for a couple years. It was supposed to be a 2.5 hour class but with a handful of interruptions and several pauses so I could take copious notes, It took about 5.5 hours. Took care of a handful of important emails after I finished the training.
In the background, I kept a browser aimed at Mt Bachelor hoping to see my buddy Chris who was in Bend for a week's vacation. I knew he'd be excited. They received more than a foot of fresh snow and issued the proverbial powder alert - exactly the conditions he'd been hoping for. I never did see him, but then again, I couldn't keep an eye on it all day.
I talked with Mindy mid/late afternoon. She shared how excited she was about our weekend ski trip. She also shared that Jacob's soccer practice was canceled again, though didn't give a specific reason. Wet fields? Reminded me that Bella had gymnastics at 6pm. I assumed she would take and I would pick-up. Didn't say anything about dinner.
I wrapped up my day by 445pm then headed for home. Called Mindy again on my drive home. We talked only briefly, her sharing that we could eat leftovers for dinner. Got home just after 5pm. Saw neighbor Mike barreling down the road just as I was entering the house. Inside, Bella with playing Wii with friends Makayla and Alena. I snatched up the Pilot keys then drove down to Mike's to get the Thule. I sent him a text earlier in the day sharing that I wanted to pick it up.
Teri was just backing out of their driveway when I parked out front. Mike met me in the garage. We talked for a few as he cleared a few items away from the Thule that's been in their garage since they got back from Snow Shoe early February. When I asked for the key he shared that it left with Teri. It was on her key chain. Crap! Not a big deal, though. I have an extra key. I left the Pilot sitting and ran home to get it. By the time i got back, Mike had the Thule sitting next to the Pilot ready to open and mount.
He helped me lift it on. A lot easier with two people, I can tell you that. He showed me a video clip of his dogs coming upon a goose nest earlier that afternoon in the woods. Hilarious. They went at it for a couple minutes. In the end the goose slapped the Jack Russell's away with her wings. I wished that they ate the damn goose and its eggs. Mike was curious if we were going somewhere. Yep, HV. We talked about that for a few before i headed back home.
Back home, Mindy stopped working on report cards to run Bella to gymnastics. While she was away I worked on my blog and packed and prepared a bit more for our ski trip. When she got back she made dinner for herself and Jacob. I wasn't that hungry having snacked on cashews and chips a bit earlier. She made Jacob a burrito and also sliced off a section from one of the Wal-Mart subs intended for our drive to HV. She made herself a taco meat and rice bowl. She couldn't finish. I ate her leftovers.
We discussed our Friday departure plans, which hinged on my working from home and her taking the Accord to school. That way I could load the Pilot and deliver the dog to Gloria's along with Jacob's help. Bella & Makayla were planning to go to school with Mindy (our kids are already on Spring break). The idea is to leave pretty much as soon as Mindy gets home from school.
As the time to leave for Bella drew near, Mindy suggested I offer to take Lane saving the McVey's a trip. Good idea! I sent Darwin a text offering as much. He responded quickly offering that he would pick-up Bella, hoping that we could take Lane next Tuesday when both he and Connie have other commitments. Worked for us. Agreed and thanked him.
Once that was solidified, I headed upstairs to slip into my PJs and then back to the kitchen where I poured a pint of Great Lakes Alchemy IIPA. Yum! Enjoyed that and some TV, tuning into The Universe on the History Channel at 8pm. Thursday's episode was all about the speed of the universe and how everything in the universe is in motion. Cool stuff! I finished off my pint fairly fast and then poured a 2nd, only this time a Bodhi. Without question, the CBC jugs and caps fare so much better than the others, keeping the beer fresher longer.
Bella was expecting Makayla to come down to spend the night, but not until Alena's mom arrived to pick her up. Makayla called around 9pm to share that Alena's mom was running late. Mindy peeled off to bed. Asked if I minded staying up until Makayla arrived. No, not at all. I started getting sleepy as I polished off that 2nd pint. (30pm came and went and still no Makayla. I told Bella that I was staying up until 945pm but then heading to bed. Makayla still wasn't there when 945pm arrived. I headed to bed as promised reminding Bella to secure the home and turn off the lights. She agreed. I heard Makayla arrive even before I was under the bed covers. And it wasn't too much longer before I was out for the night.

Hello Spring ... Hello HV!
I was up and out of bed a few minutes after 530am. I felt decent, though my neck and shoulder a little stiff. But after calisthenics it loosened up significantly. Was at my PC with coffee by 550am. Checked the weather. It was below freezing and not expected to warm up too much throughout the day, or for the next few for that matter. While checking the local weather, I noticed a winter storm warning hovering over Ellicottville icon. Wow, they’re in the midst of a huge later winter dumping. Looking at the details, they had gotten about a foot over the last day or two and were expecting that much again through Friday. Hmmm? I guess winter isn’t over just yet.
I woke Mindy near 610am with the usual cup of coffee. Downstairs again, I poured a little more coffee but then quickly moved on to meditation and stretching. Both went well. It was cold so I wore full winter running gear. Headed out near 645am. These days it’s almost completely dark at the run’s outset but day light by my return. I ran the full 4.1 miles, my legs feeling reenergized.
Mindy was just coming out the door to depart as I made my way up the driveway. In passing I shared how much snow they’re getting and expecting at HV and how the weekend there looks incredibly wintery. She smiled and told me to look into it. Hmm? Inside, I leashed up the pug and headed out for a walk. She took care of business pretty quick.
Back at the house I got busy making my eggs. I asked Bell what she thought about spending the weekend at HV. It didn’t take but a second for her to express her strong opinion – “No. Ski season is over!” While the pan heated, I went back to the HV website checking their webcams first to double check the existing snow pack. About as good as it gets, and all runs and lifts opened. I planned to check for lodging options too, but needed to get moving with my work prep. Finished frying some eggs then enjoyed a relaxing breakfast.
By then, Bella was up in her room. I hollered up to make sure she brushed her teeth and hair. I didn’t expect her response. She told me that she couldn’t because she had to clean her room. I could only laugh. Mindy told both kids the night before that there’s a new rule. You don’t get to use your screens if your room isn’t clean when she gets home from school. Apparently Bella took it to heart and wasn’t about to lose screens to the point of making it a priority over personal hygiene.
It was 755a by the time I finished breakfast and packing a light lunch. I planned to shower after seeing Bella onto the school bus. With 15 minutes to kill, I headed back to the HV website to look into lodging options. Not only were they getting some of the best snow of the season, but the lodging and lift tickets dropped to spring rates this week too. They had a couple rooms available in the Inn and a few in the Tamarack. The prices looked to be about 67% of winter rates. I did a couple what ifs, looking at Friday – Monday or 3 nights. Wow! Great rates! I was energized and suddenly overcome with the desire to take a long three day weekend and head to the Valley! I couldn’t pull the trigger, however. Would still need to talk with Mindy, my boss, and then iron out logistics.
I moved forward with my day, heading out to the bus with Bella at 810am. The bus was there at 815am. Right on time. Back at the house I quickly rushed off to the shower. Was downstairs and ready to go by 840am. It was a new Albany day, but with a spare mouse and power supply I no longer need to check to make sure I have them in my backpack. I left the house at 845am. It was a fast, easy drive across town to New Albany. Made it in about 20 minutes. Listened to XM’s Blue Collar comedy most of the way.
Easy work day. Our 10am weekly call was canceled since there were no pressing matters. That’s always good news. Sent Mindy a text early on asking that she give me call when she had a minute to talk about HV. Spent some face to face time with both of the managers I interact most with. Mindy called me sooner than I expected. Had to be around 1030am. Said she was on a break. I shared the details regarding a potential HV weekend – the cost and availability. Agreed on 3 nights – Fri – Sun, coming home on Monday afternoon. She said to book it. She would ask her mom to keep Eiknarf. I planned to let my boss know that I wanted to keep Monday as a scheduled day off but cancel the rest of the next week’s vacation. It’s something he and I had already discussed a couple weeks ago. The only concern I shared with Mindy was that the two rooms available at the Inn might be gone by the day’s end, especially given the wintry forecast. Come what may. If it is meant to be then the rooms will still be available. I didn’t want to mess with it during the work day.
I quickly snapped off an email to my peer making sure he would cover me on Monday. Said he would.
Spent the rest of my day working on mostly reactive measures. I didn’t bother taking a lunch break. The day moved fast. It was after 4pm in a hurry. I stayed busy until 435pm then packed for home. Aside from a couple bathroom breaks, I didn’t budge from my desk all day.
Called Mindy once I was safely on 270. She confirmed that he mom agreed to keep the pug for the weekend. I asked how the kids were about the possible ski trip. Said Bella was still a bit negative and that she hadn’t had the opportunity to talk about it with Jacob since he was off playing basketball with friends. She wasn’t too worried about their opinions. They’ll go and like it!
I made good time barreling around 270. Arrived home before 510pm. Mindy was in middle of making tacos, actually she had just started. Said it would be about 30 minutes. After unpacking my work gear I went to my PC to try and book one of the rooms available earlier. As a matter of fact, I still had the reservation page up. However, after a refresh, the rooms at the Inn were no longer showing available. They did, however, have rooms at the Tamarack, which the rooms there are newer, nicer, and with more amenities, not to mention more centrally located. But even though they market as ski in ski out, it’s a lot more like the condo we stayed at in Utah. Ski storage and an elevator ride to your floor. Still, very nice, and they had a liftview room available too. I consulted with Mindy. As expected, she expressed sadness that the Inn was full, but was good with the Tamarack. I suggested I call their central reservations desk to double check on the Inn.
Good move. According to the women, they still had two rooms at the Inn, but both smoking and one only Saturday and Sunday night. The other Friday and Saturday. Suggested we could do the move thing. Nah, not interested. Actually. I was liking the idea of the Tamarack. The women shared that I could get a much better rate by booking online. OK. I booked the room at the Tamarack – a Deluxe hotel room overlooking Mardi Gras and Cindy’s lifts.
Felt good having it booked. We could turn our attention to prep. Love it when a spontaneous plan comes together like that. No fretting, counting down the days, no sir. Instead, Bam! While dinner simmered, Mindy talked with Bella who was already warming to the idea. But when she told Jacob, who had just come inside from playing basketball, he was adamant about not going. I didn’t say a word. Let Mindy handle it. He was fine with the idea once we sat down to dinner.
The tacos were decent. I had a burrito and a taco. After that I was full. Clean-up was a snap since we used paper plates. Clean-up consisted mostly of putting away leftovers and then washing pans. Dinner and clean-up were behind us by 630pm. We spent the evening hours organizing our gear for our impromptu ski trip. Sent a note to all of our local ski peeps encouraging them to join us.
Settled down in the family room around 730pm tuning into In Through the Worm Hole. Watched more than two hours of it. Great programming. Really makes one think. Mindy graciously worked on my back, neck and shoulder again, finishing up by rubbing some Bengay into the small knot at the epicenter. She headed to bed around 915-930pm. I stayed up a while longer or until 1010pm.
