More Rain and a Broken Drain
photo: Jacob well & Jacob ill
Another Monday and another morning up on time. I brushed my teeth, grabbed my running clothes, then fumbled through yesterday’s jeans looking for my eye drops. After all that I was still downstairs before 535a.
While putting on my exercise tennies I glanced out the back door hoping for clear skies, but none were to be seen. It was still completely cloud covered. I promptly headed to the living room where I whipped out 55 sit-ups then hopped into my PC chair to check headlines and weather. It was 46 degrees with an expected high of only 58 later in the day. Where'd those 90’s go? I saw that the Bears lost to the Giants 17-3. That’s what I wanted to happen.
After five minutes on the PC I whipped out 55 push-ups then freed Frankie from her pen. Once again, I wasn’t feeling 100%, feeling slightly fatigued and maybe even a little dizzy, but I battled through it. I left my coffee sit while I took Frankie out back. She was fairly quick to do her business. We were back inside by 605a, and after providing a treat, I turned my attention to meditation and stretching. The stretching went better than the meditation.
Last second I decided to wear fresh running clothes instead of my smelly others. I took Frankie upstairs to Mindy, who was just out of bed, then returned downstairs to head out for my run. After another quick stretch from the stoop I was off. Given the early season chill, I could’ve stood to wear my thin running gloves at least for the first mile or two. Instead, I made like a turtle drawing my hands up into my fleece. That served me almost as well as the gloves.
I ran the full 4.1 mile track without a lick of difficulty. But then again, I didn’t expect any. It was still semi-dark by the time I made it back home. While catching my breath I surveyed the freshly laid sod. Still looking good. From a piece of sod's perspective, the weather has been ideal.
Both kids were up and downstairs. Mindy made cheesy scrambled eggs.. Bella was having scrambled eggs along with Mindy & I. Frankie wanted some too. I made a point to save a few bites for her. She loves her eggs, just like Sparky did. Jacob didn’t look or sound too good. I asked Mindy if she heard him moaning and groaning in the night. I know that I sure did. Mindy did not, and didn’t give it much thought. She left for school minutes later after reminding the kids to bus home with Noah.
I scraped the remnants of my scrambled eggs into Frankie’s bowl then headed off for a shower. It was already 755a by the time I was ready to go. The kids, meanwhile, were still slummin’ in their rooms. I gave them a quick holler. Soon they were down and ready to head out.
We met up with Kenny and the girls at the bus stop. Didn’t look like Kenny was in any hurry to head off to work. He was still in his PJ’s. He later shared that they’re doing work at a school and can’t start until 330p – after school’s let out. The kids were on the bus at the usual time – 805a. Frankie and I headed back home where I gave her one last opportunity to relieve herself and then made my final preparations for work. I took a couple minutes to start the dishwasher and put a few things away. The house was still a little out of sorts after Bella’s b-day party.
I left for work at 815a in the Trooper arriving just after 830a. I was feeling less than my best as the morning wore on. Once again, I was tired with a mildly upset stomach. I wonder if it’s the Dexilant. I only plan to take it through the first fill of my prescription. I thought I might call the water company back with the results of my water dilemma but wasn’t up to the challenge. Honestly, I wanted nothing more than to work quietly in my office. I spent a few hours of my work day with my door closed. And instead of a lunch, I tried taking a brief snooze. But wouldn’t you know it, someone came a knockin’. I didn’t wanna leave ‘em hang.
The afternoon was busy enough to pull me out of my internal funk. I still wasn’t feeling well but working hard took my mind off of it. I talked with Mindy late afternoon. She advised that Jacob was sick, even threw up once his daddy picked him up from Noah's. This was a Jimaken Monday. I have to wonder if there isn’t a bug floating around our house. Mindy hasn’t been feeling well lately either. Might be one of those ugly kid viruses that isn’t quite strong enough to get adults down completely. Takes a big horse to kick me!
Mindy asked how I felt about chicken & noodles. I wasn’t feeling that hungry at the time but also didn’t want to rule them out knowing too well that I might be hungry later when I got home. Mindy also shared that she was making arrangements for a sub tomorrow so she could stay home with Jacob. I asked if she could also get Bella’s b-day haul put away. But she countered that she’d have to clean her closet out first. As a third alternative, I suggested we move the huge pile of gift bags to the spare room thus giving us our family room back. She agreed with my logic.
The end of the work day came along soon enough. Soon it was 530p and time to head home. I thought about calling Ashley since I haven’t talked with her in a while but ended up calling my mom. I hadn’t talked with her in a week or two either. The call went straight to voice mail, but she picked it up in a hurry.
Mom sounded reasonably well, but shared that her toe was still ailing after having the bone replaced. Had the stitches removed a few days ago. I commented about her facebook page saying something about “maybe at Xmas”. I asked if she knew Glenn was coming home. She claimed not. I shared that it would be my Xmas present to the entire family. I was more than a little surprised with her response, although I don’t think she meant it like it sounded. She basically said she needed money more. We talked for the duration of my commute home.
Mindy was home alone and busy on her laptop, presumably completing sub plans. She had the chicken & noodles cooking on stove. I could tell right away that she had worked hard to get the house in order. All of Bella’s b-day gifts were upstairs. The rest of the clutter was picked up too. That calmed me almost instantly. Dinner needed to cook a bit longer, and since Mindy was busy on her laptop with school, I decided to use the time constructively updating my blog.
After finishing up around 630p I asked if the noodles were ready. They were. I dished up both of us a bowl while she took Frankie out for a romp.
Frankie’s learned to scratch at the door when she wants out, which is very good. The only problem is, she scratches when she wants out, and not necessarily to go potty. Sometimes just to play, or sometimes to head down to Woody’s. It’s cute, but also a pain. But we love our pug.
I seasoned my chicken & noodles really well. They were top notch delicious. I ended up having two bowls, although the second serving much smaller than the first. I didn’t completely stuff myself.
Mindy reminded me about the broken drain stopper in the kid’s bathroom. After finishing dinner I headed upstairs to get busy on it. I actually looked at it after getting the kids on the bus and before leaving for work earlier that morning, but quickly realized it would take more time than I had.
I had to take the trap apart to access the drain and push the stopper up from underneath. Ewh, that smell! Not good. It sounded like the kids arrived home just as I was getting started. The stopper was covered and caked with this black slimey smelly goo. Nasty! I quickly determined that the reason the stopper release stopped working was because the stopper shaft deteriorated. The last ½” was resting in the trap. I’d need to make a trip to Home Depot or Lowe’s to get a new one, but that wouldn’t be until Tuesday at lunch. I put it back together minus the stopper. It was usable as it was.
Like a lot of things in a 16 year old home, once you start working on one thing you see more things needing attention. I really want to replace all the toilet valves and water feeds lines as well as the hoses that feed the washer and dryer. I can do all the work for less than a $100. And I’d much rather do it proactively instead of reactively after a mishap.
Before heading back downstairs, I washed my hands, changed into my PJ’s, and brushed my teeth. Downstairs I settled into the familyroom chair to watch MNF with Jacob, who was lying quietly on the sofa. He wanted to watch football too.
It was still a few minutes ahead of kick-off, so we watched all the pregame hype. Kick-off wasn’t until 840p. It was the Dolphins vs. the Patriots. Mindy and the kids headed to be around 900-915p. I stayed up a while longer. Last I saw the Dolphins were ahead 7-3.
