River Front Beers - the Couv - Chart House Dinner

For the duration of our trip, my rise varied little, waking most days between 630-645am. Saturday was no exception. I was the first one up and quickly in the kitchen prepping a pot of coffee using what remained of the Mt Hood gourmet coffee I bought while on the mountain.

It should be noted that up to that point, I hadn’t done a single sit-up or push-up for the entire trip. The way I look at it, the break was well deserved. I enjoyed some coffee then delivered some to Mindy just before taking off on my run. I’m pretty sure that Darwin was up just before I set out on my run.

I checked the local temp via my Droid. It was 40 degrees under partly clear skies (nice). I ran all the way to the river trail past Who-Song & Larry’s. I’ve encountered lots of  runners years past, but this time there were scores more out enjoying the nice, mild weather.

I made it back to Glenn’s place still ahead of 8am. It wasn’t too long before everybody else was up and at it. Mindy said her knee was feeling a lot better. While she showered I got busy making omelets for the house. I used red onion, tomato, and shredded cheddar cheese along with tortilla chips. That gave the omelet some texture as well as a slight crunch. Everybody liked ‘em.

Aside from Darwin, the rest of us didn’t have any firm plans until dinner, which wouldn’t be until 830pm. Darwin’s cousin that he hadn’t seen for 30 years was coming by to pick him up around 130pm so they could spend the day together. After showers, Darwin, Mindy & I packed for Sunday’s trip home minus what we’d need through Sunday morning.

Darwin’s cousin Eric showed up around 130pm as planned. After a quick meet and greet they took off. We talked about seeing the Body exhibit at OMSI but the $25 admission and the fact that we’d seen it before in Seattle made us reconsider. Besides, we felt it a shame to not spend the time outdoors given the lovely early spring like weather. We opted for a river walk and lunch. Of course, given Mindy’s knee situation, we drove to the Columbia riverfront.

Just like my run earlier that day, there were people out in droves walking along the river and the scenic park that runs along the Vancouver shore. After an hour or so, I suggested we lunch at the McMennamin’s along the river stopping to see the bronze Ilchee statue along the way.

We opted for a table outside along the river front under the canvas awning which also sported heaters. There we shared a pitcher of beer and some food. I ate and drank light keeping in mind our dinner reservations later. I had tried calling mom several times earlier in the day getting a busy signal. I called again from the water front. This time I got through. Said she was on the computer earlier but wasn’t feeling well, side hurt. At first mom insisted that we were already home from Oregon. I explained that we were still there. To prove it, I passed the phone around to everyone else.
Before heading back to Glenn’s we took in Officer’s Row, and old military installment now housing a private airfield, an air museum, and many businesses. I’ve been there a time or two past. Back at Glenn’s, Mindy went for a nap. Come to think of it, so did Glenn, though he didn’t sleep nearly as long as Mindy. I’m thinking it was around 5pm or so when Glenn, Tommy and I headed out for a walk around the neighborhood. I went in and told Mindy so she wouldn’t wake and wonder.

We walked about a mile and a half I’m guessing taking in the many restored homes and then the businesses along
Main St
. Huge improvements since my first trip to Vancouver  many years ago. Glenn shared that he’s been living in the ‘couv for 20 years now in 3 different residences.

Our dinner reservations were at 830pm at the Chart House in the western hills in Southwest Portland. Ahead of leaving for dinner, I did some writing for my blog getting caught up through Friday. And then, after freshening up, we left for dinner around 745pm. Glenn had the directions scrawled out on paper even though we easily could have used my GPS.

Arrived at the Chart House around 810pm. It’s nestled into the hillside overlooking downtown Portland. It was packed. We used their valet service. However, any concern about being undressed was quickly dashed when I saw many others sporting jeans. The plan was to meet Darwin and Eric and possibility Tom Shepherd. I texted Darwin to let him know we were there. Responded quickly that they were on their way, would be a few minutes late.

The restaurant has two levels, both sporting views over looking downtown Portland. We headed to the lower level bar area to await our table, which we were advised was running behind. We sat near a fireplace with a grouping of sofas. Very nice! We all ordered drinks. Tommy & Mindy ordered wine. I went with Jack & Coke, and Glenn went with … not sure. Darwin & Eric showed ten minutes later, and Tom Shepherd ten minutes after them. I’m thinking it was 845pm when we were seated on the lower level near the window overlooking downtown.

The manager came over to chat after learning we had some interest in the names of the buttes and/or hills just outside our window. He did his best to help clarify the names. Meanwhile, Tyler, our server, boasted about their excellent prime rib. Must admit, he did a good enough job selling it that most of us wanted some. Five minutes later the manger stepped over to tell us they were all out!

I opted for my original choice, broiled scallops and a bowl of lobster bisque. Several others went with the steelhead special, including Mindy. But she changed her mind when I shared that it’s salmon, which is what she had for lunch. She changed her order to a filet topped with blue cheese.

My dinner was sinfully delicious. And from listening to the others, theirs was equally scrumptious. After diner we stuck around yucking it up while enjoying the spectacular view of the city and the moon rising over Mt Tabor. Awesome! It was after 10pm and many of us getting incredibly sleepy. After all, it was after 1am CMH time. We split the check four ways with me covering my own and Mindy. Glenn paid the valet parking attendant. We took the back way to the freeway winding our way through the west hills and finally down into the city. Nice drive, though a bit scary rounding blind curves in the dark.

Not sure who did, but someone in the minivan reminded me to stop for gas so we wouldn’t have to come morning. I asked to be reminded at least 5 or 6 times. J We stopped at the ARCO near Safeway on
39th St.
Darwin
covered the gas and also picked up a 6 pack of IPA. Arrived back at Glenn’s near 11pm where Mindy & I headed straight to bed. Good night moon.

Last Day on the Mountain - Blue Moon

Our last day on the mountain, I slept in until 7am, which was the latest I slept all week. And sadly it was another gray and drippy morning in Govy Camp. We were out of coffee, so the plan called for me to stop and pick some up at the Govy Camp General Store after my run. Lucky for me, there was nearly a full cup of Thursday’s coffee still resting in the carafe. I reheated it in the microwave then enjoyed it just before heading off on a run. I took my wallet along so I could stop at the general store.
To accommodate the stop for coffee, I changed my running strategy a bit. This time I headed down hill towards the brewery first, then ran up to the rest stop and back to the Govy Camp General Store. Felt good to have my run behind me, but also a little sad, this my last in Govy Camp for perhaps another year. I couldn’t find any Folgers coffee and ended up buying some gourmet Hood River roasted coffee beans. Used their onsite grinder, too. Picked up a dozen donuts as well.
Even though it was well past 8am, the condo remained eerily quiet. Guess everybody was sleeping in. After brewing some fresh coffee I went to wake Mindy. She was out cold. Startled her even. I apologized then headed back downstairs. At the time I wasn’t 100% certain of the Collins Lake check-out time but guessed it to be 11am. Now after 9am, figured I’d better confirm. Yep, 11am.  While the others showered, I packed up the kitchen (food & drink). And when I headed up for shower I discovered that Mindy was already packed up.
Our plan was to check-out of the condo but still ski Timberline. That meant we needed to leave our ski gear accessible. Getting all our gear and five people in the minivan was a trick but we figured it out.  I made one last pass through the condo before locking up once last time. At the office I turned on our keys and bought discounted Timberline lift tickets. Tommy declared his intentions not to ski. He’d keep Mindy company.
It was an easy drive up Timberline Rd to the lodge. The temperature was something like 37 degrees. Dropped Mindy at the main lodge then headed back to the day lodge parking lot to gear up for skiing. Darwin cited begin a little hung over and needing to eat something substantial before embarking on the mountain. Said he’d meet us out there. Glenn and I headed out into a fog and mushy snow. It wasn’t pretty. We skied to the bottom of Flood twice, both of us skiing tentatively, me out of fear of injury, Glenn for boot pain and tired, sore legs. Started to rain fairly hard on a ride up Pucci. I declared my intentions to head in, but was quickly reminded that would require a fairly difficult uphill peg. We skied down to Molly’s or Flood, can’t recall then back up. About the time we made it back to the day lodge the rain changed to snow. But we were wet and needed a break. We checked our skis then headed over to the main lodge to meet Mindy, who shared that Darwin, she and Tommy were in the Ram’s Head overlooking the mountain.
We joined them there, but had to remove our ski boots to walk on the original rustic wood floors. I ordered a 20 ounce porter and a bowl of clam chowder. It was really good. Darwin had just finished his meal and had all but decided to skip skiing all together. He looked rough and tired. I encouraged him to go down a level to the fireplaces and sofas and steal a nap. Mindy cited being sleepy too and did just that. I remember looking over the rail and seeing her sleeping.
After our beers, Glenn and I headed out to give it another go. We might’ve skied two runs before both of us declared ourselves done. Sadly, the conditions were too unbearable to keep going and risk injury. I checked my skis then went for the others. Glenn decided to wait in the day lodge. It was only 230pm.
Took a while to corral everyone but I eventually did. We stowed our gear then drove over to the main lodge to pick-up Mindy so she wouldn’t have to navigate the parking lot.  I’m thinking that it was 310pm when we descended Timberline Rd for Route 26 into Portland. It’s only 54 miles to Portland but Glenn said it would take a good 90 minutes. It rained heavily at times as we made our way back to his place. And we were within eye shot of the Portland International airport in something less than one hour. However, from there it took at least another 30 minutes to get to Glenn’s house in Vancouver due to ridiculously heavy traffic on Rt 84 & Rt 205.
Arrived at Glenn’s near 5pm or just before. Didn’t take long to unload the minivan. We took a brief rest, and some may have even napped. Collectively, we agreed to do dinner & beers at the Blue Moon Tavern in NW Portland, an old fave of ours. Planned to leave at 7pm.  Before then, Mindy and I repacked and organized a lot of our gear. The time went fast. Soon it was time to depart for the Blue Moon.
Parking is always at a premium in NW Portland. And because it was Friday night, it was even more difficult. I dropped Mindy near the entrance to Blue Moon, Darwin getting out and joining her. And actually, we got pretty lucky finding a parking spot only about two blocks away.
Mindy & Darwin were seated at our favorite spot, the fire ring table. The only problem being they were out of firewood. How can that happen? I was a little discouraged. Our server, though, was very attentive and rustled up several handfuls of kindling to help keep the embers glowing and warm. Mindy being the exception, we all ordered beers. Mindy tried their porter but opted only for water. When it came to food, I ordered wings. Can’t recall what Darwin and Mindy ordered. Glenn had a gyro, and Tommy some wrap.
I think we all had a second beer, but started fading fast, especially Mindy. I’m thinking we left the Blue moon near 9pm. Back at Glenn’s, we watched Darwin’s GoPro videos and then reviewed Glenn’s ski trip photos. He and Darwin were working on an exchange when I peeled off for bed. I’m thinking that was near 1030pm.

Happy Anniversary ... but not the one you might expect

Like the previous day, I was up right at 630am. I noticed right away that it was raining again but I didn’t let it dampen my spirits. The forecast called for early rain but then some clearing. The only problem was the temperature. It was expected to reach into the low 40s on the mountain. That meant slush. L
As the previous few days Darwin and Tommy were up soon after I got the coffee going. We hung out quietly until I set out on my run. The temperature was already about freezing. Water was dripping endlessly from the metal roofing. Despite above freezing temps, I ran in winter gear minus ear muffs.
I ran the same route, first running east uphill towards the village rest stop and then all the way down the hill to the Mt Hood Brewery. I was gone near 30 minutes getting back to the condo near 815am. Not real sure the time when Mindy got up, but she was in far better spirits than I expected.  She was more than agreeable to making a return to the mountain, but her plans would be far different than ours. She planned to read and laptop from the lodge while the rest of us skied. Meanwhile, Tom Shepherd was planning to head for home. After my run, Mindy handed me a card and gift in commemoration of my 15 year running streak. The gift, a runners ID bracelet that has my name , address, and emergency contacts (she and my dad). Thanks dear!
I’m thinking it was near noon by the time we made it to the mountain, the drive far less harrowing than the day before. The roads were only wet and no precipitation. I dropped Mindy at the Providence Hood River Hospital so she could give them her insurance info. She planned to camp out at the lodge after that. Insisted we go on and ready ourselves.
Glenn, Tommy, Darwin and I got into our ski gear then headed for the lifts. The lower mountain was socked in under heavy fog and cloud cover. However, by the time we made it up Hood Express the fog had cleared and some of the mountain was visible. We had our fingers crossed that Cascade Express would eventually open. Just as we were about to start our initial descent a gentleman rushed out of the Ski Patrol hut calling my name. It was Chris Garvey, the ski patrol who rescued Mindy. He asked of her status and seemed genuinely relieved to learn that she was comfortable down in the lodge. Thanked us for coming back to ski meadows again.
The conditions, meanwhile, were much the same as they were the morning before – wet, mushy snow. In addition, they did very little grooming overnight despite no additional snow fall. We all were a little surprised. We made the best of it, bent on finding our way back to the east to the area known as Hood River Meadows. Trusting Glenn’s knowledge of the terrain, I followed him. Darwin and Tommy took a right where we made a left. They ended up at Shooting Star. The runs were very sticky and grabby, a real work out for the knees and legs. It’s fair to say that I was still a little spooked with Mindy’s accident. We did our best to locate Tommy & Darwin but never did. I tried calling and texting but couldn’t get service. I think we did two more runs top to bottom before heading in for a break. I wanted to check on Mindy as well as giving my tired legs a much needed rest. The lower mountain remained socked in under fog.
Mindy was sitting comfortably at the last table overlooking the mountain with her laptop plugged in and being serviced by Jerrod. Within ten minutes the whole gang was there and we eventually ordered beers and food.
With Mindy’s blessing, we planned to ski into the night figuring that the conditions would only improve as the temperature dropped. And after our 90 minute break, I strapped on Darwin’s GoPro camera for the first time and did some filming of our runs. We somehow got separated from Glenn and Tommy but that didn’t stop us. We skied our butts off, once again at the Hood River Meadows area. It would close at 4pm. We wanted to take advantage of its beautiful terrain. We didn’t waste a single  minute, skiing over there until they started putting up the barricades.
We took another break, heading into the lodge around 415pm. I went to the ski shop and bought myself a Meadows ballcap. More beer and good times. Mindy, meanwhile, was making the best of her circumstances. Seemed to be enjoying herself. Glenn & Tommy stayed out until 5pm or so. Darwin and I commented that MRM would’ve had their lights on near 330pm. In contrast, Meadows didn’t begin turning on their lights until after 530pm.
We headed out I’m guessing near 6pm where we skied balls to the wall, doing Two Bowl and the Face multiple times. On my last run down Two Bowl I took a soft spill near the top after the snow under my edges gave way and slid down most of the run on my ass. Now near 7pm, I declared it time for me to head in. My legs were getting tired and we had just skied really hard. Didn’t want to risk injury. Glenn and Darwin opted to keep going. At the time, we weren’t real sure where Tommy was.
Mindy was still holed up in the same corner of the ski lodge. Tommy was there with her, apparently calling it a day a bit earlier. We waited patiently for Glenn and Darwin, me enjoying another beer since Tommy agreed to drive us home. It had to be near 8pm when Glenn & Darwin finally came in. Said they were having a ball and skiing their hardest of the day.
It was 815pm by the time we left the mountain agreeing to once again do dinner at the Ratskeller, but not before dropping Mindy at the condo. She was ready for an early bedtime but encouraged us to go have some fun.
The Ratskeller was once again sparsely populated. This time we bellied up the bar in lieu of getting a booth or table. We ordered pints and a pizza – half Rat & half Gyro. We chatted at length with a young girl who we assumed was there with her boyfriend. She was really cute and seemingly wise. Shortly before we headed for home, Jerrod, our server from the Meadows ski lodge, stopped in to get some beer. Shared once again his intentions of moving to Bend and Mt Bachelor. I’m thinking it was 945pm when we got back to the condo. Both Tommy & I peeled off for bed. Glenn and Darwin headed to the hot tub.

I Come to You on Twisted Knee

Chunky Swirly - 15 years Behind Me
Was up just after 630am after tossing and turning for the final hour. I started some coffee then did a little blogging ahead of the others waking. The weather conditions weren’t ideal, and the forecast was calling for mixed precipitation locally but snow flurries on the mountain. No accumulation expected. Our plan was to ski Meadows again and into the night. To that end, we weren’t as concerned with getting out of the condo that early.
I headed out for a run that would be the last of year 15 in a light but steady rain. It was much warmer than the previous two runs. Had to be in the 30s.  Ran the same trail as before. Was out about 30 minutes. Back at the condo, I enjoyed some leftover breakfast casserole then headed up for a shower.
While running, I noticed a sign at the foot of Timberline warning that traction devices were required. Uh-oh! Not too big a deal, though. We had a fall back plan, which would be Tom Shep shuttling everyone up the mountain in two trips.  However, checking Meadows site, they were only recommended, but not required.
Our pace to ready was a bit more leisurely given that our plan was to ski well into the evening. I’m thinking we left the condo for Meadows near 1030am. At the office I realized that I left my wallet in the condo. Had to drive back to get it while the others waited inside the office. Mindy paid for our lift tickets.
The rain started to changed to a snow mix soon after leaving Govy Camp and was all heavy snow about 4 miles up the road, and it was a white knuckler the rest of the way up. Mindy made mention that she knew we should’ve stopped for chains. I didn’t like the comment given that we had few options since Les Schwab was closed the day up. We made it up safely, Tom & Tommy still a few miles/minutes behind us.
The heavy snow continued as we geared up. We headed up the Hood Express near 1130am. I remember checking the clock atop the lift. We took the same cut that we did the day prior. The fresh snow, however, was thick, wet and grabby – very difficult to ski. We started down the aptly named run, Chunk Swirly with me leading the way.  I felt the thigh burn right away as I had to fight the snow rather than cruise it. I stopped to wait for the others immediately spotting Mindy on the ground and crying in pain. She’s cried after a fall before but this was different. I knew it wasn’t good. She was in excruciating pain. MY heart sank as I scrambled up the hill to her side. Darwin was already with her flagging others skiers to slow down and avoid her.
She said her right knee cracked and popped after her ski got caught in the chunky snow during a routine turn. I asked Glenn to go for help. He did. It wasn’t long before Chris Garvey, Mt Hood Meadows ski patrol arrived to help. He had another join him. By then I had Mindy’s other ski off and was sitting at her side simply to provide comfort and support. Good thing I had a bottle of water. She was crazy thirsty. Chris was cool, calm and confident as he began the triage on the mountain.
We eventually loaded Mindy onto the dreaded snow sled with her leg splinted. Chris and another skied her down to the onsite hospital. I skied down with her skis while Glenn and Darwin took the extra poles. Being the first run of the day along with the chunky ski conditions, even that was taxing. I met Glenn and Darwin at the hospital’s entrance. Darwin took her skis & boots back to the car while I headed in to be with Mindy.
The staff was friendly as they went about triage. The doctor, can’t recall his name, stopped over to check out her knee, and after an examination and Xrays guessed her MCL likely torn or sprained with potential ACL issue as well. The outfitted her with a soft splint and recommended she see an orthopedic specialist once back home. Gave her some Vicadin and recommended scheduled Ibuprofen. All things considered, Mindy was in good spirits and insisted we go out and ski while she hung out in the lodge. The hospital drove her to the lodge entrance and showed us to the elevator with direct access to the Alpenstube lodge.
Darwin, Glenn and Tommy were already there having beers. That sounded good. I ordered one too. Because she’d recently taken a Vicadin, Mindy ordered only water.  Eventually ordered food, too, me going with the soup and sandwich special. Good stuff!  After another hour or so we headed out to ski leaving Mindy alone in the lodge to make friends, which she was already doing a good of.
The snow was still chunky and the snow now changed to rain, but with all we’d been through none of us seemed to mind too much. Instead, we made the best of it. And perhaps a way of beating our demons, we skied down Chunky Swirly where I briefly paused near the spot where Mindy wrenched her knee.
After an hour or so of skiing headed back to the lodge to check on Mindy. As expected, she was doing good and hanging with the staff. After another beer or two we headed out for another round of skiing.  By then my ski pants had dried. It was still raining, but again, we made the best of it and did perhaps some of our best skiing, especially considering the conditions. By evening’s end we were soaked through to our cores. We left Meadows around 5pm knowing we needed to head into Sandy to fill Mindy’s Vicadon prescription. Tommy  would drive.
We dropped the others at the condo before heading into Sandy. Mindy called the Sandy’s Walgreen’s to make sure they had the Vicadin. They did. It’s about a 32 mile drive into Sandy, but a fairly easy. While Mindy hung at the pharmacy, I wandered the store picking up some more bottled water, jerky, almonds, and chocolates. Soon we were on our way back to Govy Camp. We called the others, who were having pizza at the Ratskeller. We agreed to meet them there rather than going back to the condo. They had a pizza waiting our arrival.
Must’ve been about 8pm when we pulled up, parked, and headed inside.  I ordered an Inversion IPA and then scarfed a couple pieces of pizza. It was delicious topped with bacon, sausage, pepperoni, black olives, and onions. We hung out for about 45 minutes before Tommy, Mindy & I headed for the condo. Glenn, Tom and Darwin stayed behind apparently for more beer.  I helped Mindy get situated in bed with the Suduko book she borrowed from Tommy. I headed back downstairs where I enjoyed a beer or two with the others while also watching Swamp People. I started to dose. About the time I peeled off for bed, Glenn and Darwin headed for the hot tub.

Another Bluebird Ski Day Only this Time @ Meadows

Woke at 630am. Still dark, I gathered my running clothes and headed down the stairs where I prepped coffee and put both breakfast casseroles in the oven. I delivered Mindy’s coffee and also verified the correct temp and time for the casserole. I was close. Adjusted the oven according to Mindy’s instruction then dressed for a run. It was 645am. I headed out shortly after 7am. Once again, I was greeted by a clear sky, cold temps, and a stiff westerly breeze.
I managed the day’s run much better being more attuned to the uphill terrain. The village was fairly quiet save for a few delivery trucks.  Was gone for about 30 minutes. The gang was up and enjoying breakfast. I enjoyed some too, but not before getting a much needed shower. To speed things along I encouraged those wanting/needing a shower it get on it.
The day’s plan was to ski Meadows. We left the condo around 930am. That might be a record! We stopped at the office for lift tickets. Mindy & I had already talked about it and bought Darwin’s – a birthday gift. Onward!
It was a sunny drive around the mountain to Meadows, which is about nine miles from Govy Camp. Once again, the lot was sparsely attended. Bad Ass! We were quickly geared up and at the base of Hood Express by 10am. It was gorgeous.
Glenn, Darwin, Mindy & I skied several runs eventually making our way up to the very top of the ski resort providing breath taking views of the resort and surrounding area. The skiing was incredible too, and even better than Timberline the previous day. Collectively, it was our best skiing ever, bar none.
We took our break as previously arranged near 1230pm visiting the Alpenstube overlooking the mountain. I drank a 22 ounce Ice Axe and ate the soup and sandwich special – wedding soup with meatballs and a chicken barbeque sandwich. Top notch ski food! Our break lasted about an hour. And by breaks end, the bluebird skiing we’d enjoyed since Sunday were gone. It was clouding over quickly, but the mountain remained unshrouded until the end of the day.
We headed over to the newest terrain, hood river meadows, and got there from the very top. Awesome. Glenn and I had the entire mountain to ourselves and many of the trails we took getting there looked freshly groomed. Absolutely  incredible. We met Mindy and the others at the lift. They took another route, not buying into Glenn’s insistence that the way we took was all blue. It was.
We skied over there until 345pm. Mindy and the others called it a day. Glenn and I headed out to do as many runs as we could, finishing on the face, the run that ate my lunch some five or so years ago. It’s funny how 6 hours of skiing out west takes its toll. By 4m I’m typically out of gas. Skiing Skibowl later was most likely not happening. J
We headed back to the condo where all the boys minus Tommy enjoyed Jack & Cokes while Mindy took a nap. Darwin made a batch of guacamole and then everybody Panini’s. They were delicious. After three stiff Jack & Cokes I was ready for bed. I think it was 9pm when Mindy & I headed to bed.

Bluebird Ski Day @ Timberline

Slept really good. The queen pillow-top bed was amazingly comfortable. I was up just before dawn, 645am. I gathered my running clothes from the closet where I had them strategically placed for easy access then tiptoed down the stairs to the kitchen. Glenn and Tommy were both crashed out on the two sofas. That meant one the four beds didn’t get used.
Started coffee then slipped into my running clothes. Darwin soon joined me, and not long after, Tommy was up. As soon as the coffee was ready I poured a cup for Mindy and ran it up to our room.  Not exactly sure the time when I headed off on my run but I’m thinking near 745am. I’d forgotten the uphill terrain heading towards Timberline through Gov’t Camp. In fact,  I was winded before making it out of Collins Lake. I paced myself heading east into a stiff cold wind. It was much colder than the 24 degree temperature I was quoted before heading out.
The downhill leg towards Mt Hood brewery was easy, fun. The uphill back to the condo, draining.  Darwin had breakfast ready, bacon and cheesy eggs. Nice to have someone else on board willing to jump in and cook. Thanks Darmada!
Breakfast was yummy. Can’t remember if I showered before or after eating. Thinking it was after. Regardless, it felt terrific. Everyone managed to ready themselves for a day at Timberline by 10am. We stopped by the office to pick-up our discounted lift tickets - $41 each. Not bad at all. It was a blue bird
Ski-day. Just gorgeous. Parking wasn’t an issue either. Can’t recall the lot so empty.  Tommy needed to pick-up rental gear so we waited just outside the day lodge for he and Tom Shep. Glenn guess Tom S. struggling to get into his ski boots. After several minutes I headed in to check on him. Not only was he struggling ,but he managed to slice open his middle finger on his ski boots, too. It was gushing blood. The girl at the counter freaked. Took him to get medical attention. We decided to head off and ski some runs after agreeing to meet in the lodge at 1230pm.
Skied Jeff Flood then up the Magic Mile. Repeated that plan several times. The snow was a little crsip (icy) atop the mile but nice and fast just below to the bottom of the mountain. The skiing was awesome. The views breathtaking.
Darwin wore his Go2 video camera filming several of the runs.  Two hours went by quickly. Soon we were heading in for mid-day break. No longer do they sell pitchers of beer in the day lodge. 16-22 ounce beers. I opted for a 22 ounce IPA. I figured I’d only have the one. Everybody else ordered big beers too, save for Mindy who had wine – an Oregon Obsidian Stout.  Mindy and I shared a bowl of chili too. It was good.
I’m guessing our break lasted about an hour. There was a little drama when both Darwin and I managed to misplace our ski check tags. We hustled down to ski check where Darwin found his sitting on the counter. Mine was nowhere to be found. I was a little amped up – animated even. Advised the girl that I’d kill anyone who took/touched my new skis – pointed them out. She went for a manager’s help.
All the sudden, here comes Mindy sharing that Glen had my ski check tag. Said he picked it up in the bathroom. Really? Didn’t he hear Darwin and I talking about it? By then the manager and the ski check clerk had already resolved the problem by checking my skis with Darwin’s.
More of the same skiing for the afternoon – the Mile to the lower mountain. At times it seemed we had the entire mountain to ourselves. Just incredible! The Mile closed at 3pm. We spent the final hour skiing Molly’s Run, which is one of the few black runs they have. We skied it hard too, and probably three or four times. We skied until they booted us from the lift – 4pm. On one of those runs we saw a guy skiing with his dog tailing/chasing him. And when the guy would board the lift the dog would chase after from below. We saw the dog several more times. Very cute! The dog had to be in incredible shape.
We headed to the minivan with our gear but without Darwin. He peeled off a run or two early citing tired legs. Mindy sent a text. He was in the main lodge having a beer. We agreed to meet him up in the Ram’s Head. We got the same table we had back in ’07-’08 with the Imber’s a huge picture window overlooking the south Cascades – Jefferson was out in all her glory. Awesome view. We witnessed the sunset from Ram’s Head.
It had to be about 6pm when we headed down the mountain and back to our Govy Camp condo. We made a pit stop at the General store to pick-up some necessities – more beer and snacks.  We hung at the condo and then headed to the hot tub where we met some folks from California. They were pleasant. Said they spent the day at Meadows. Said it was incredible.
Headed back to the condo near 9pm. Mindy peeled off for bed.  Tommy did too. The rest of us headed to Ratskeller for pizza. The flyer in the room said it was open until 2am. It was closed. In fact, the entire village looked closed. Charlie’s was open but with just a couple guests. We headed there for a beer and wings. Glenn had gizzards. Spent no more than 45 minutes there. Headed back to the room and ultimately to bed. Good night moon!

Super Skibowl Sunday

Woke at 7am Portland time. Started coffee then soon joined by Darwin. Enjoyed coffee with others ahead of a run. Except for Glenn, everybody was up and sitting around the breakfast table ahead of my run. Near 8am as I headed out down Columbia Ave towards town and the Columbia River.
Ran through Ester Short Park tapping the bronze  'rose giving girl' on the head and then along the river hoping to take the path and deck behind Joe’s Crab Shack. However, its entrance was barricaded. Unsafe, I presumed. Has felt and looked a little suspect for the past ten years. Ran along the river not going quite as far as in years past. Ran for 30+ minutes working up a pretty good sweat. It was a nice run – sunny, chilly, but not too cold
Back at Glenn's place folks started getting showered and dressed for our trip to the mountain. I think Mindy first. Glenn might’ve been up near 9am.
Called Tom Shepherd mid morning to detail our plans for heading to Hood. He spoke of leaving a day ahead of us so it made sense for him to drive separately. That would work great since we really needed a second rig anyway. Talked about meeting at Council Crest or Bridgeport Brewery in downtown Portland, would play it by ear.
Packed up the minivan and left Glenn’s near 1030am. It was Sunday so traffic was light. Made good time heading to Council Crest, the park where Mindy & I were married. Several others visiting the park as well. We took a bunch of mountain photos and then exchanged “I love you” at the very spot where we exchanged vows 5 years prior. I’m guessing we were up there for 25-30 minutes.
As planned, we called Tom S. again as we wound our way down the hill to the Bridgeport. Tom said he’d meet us there. Got the same table we sat in two years prior. John was our server. I ordered their double red ale. Mindy, I think, ordered their stout. Everybody ordered a beer. The menu looked good. I ordered the Cuban-type sandwich. Mindy had the Mediterranean platter. Tom & Tommy each ordered meatloaf.
The plan was to take the gorge to Hood stopping at Multnomah Falls. By the way, the plan was to stop at Les Schwab for tire chains but they were closed on Sunday’s. The weather forecast called for sun all week, so we weren’t too concerned about it.
The drive through the gorge was nice. It was really windy and brisk at the falls. Darwin first such visit. Mindy and I opted not to make the walk to the bridge. The others did. I was anxious to get back on the road. Must’ve been about 245pm when we pulled out onto 84. Made good time exited at Hood River onto route 35 winding our way through the apple/pear orchards. As we neared our destination all of us were excited. Lots of folks leaving town as we were coming in. That pleased us much. We were the party!
Checked in the office with Shannon near 345pm. She was kind, cute, and accommodating. Felt awesome to be ‘home’. After lugging everything up the stairs and then stowing our ski gear in the garage, we flipped on the TV to the Super Bowl already in progress. The Giants were ahead.
The plan was to ski Skibowl after a little break. At first it was just Darwin and I who planned to ski, but I talked Mindy into joining us too. We picked up lift tickets from Shannon just before they closed the office – near 5pm.  She reminded us that we had 10 free Skibowl lift tickets to use during the week, but couldn’t use then that night. No biggie!
I was excited but also a tad nervous, having only skied Skibowl on other time and that was during a big snow storm. Unfamiliar trails. It’s not even a quarter mile to the Skibowl parking lot. 15 minutes later we were heading up their rickety blue double lift. The lifts are downright spooky but the trails nice. I think we did 7 or 8 lift rides up. That might not seem like a lot but considering the length of the runs, it was plenty. Besides, the idea was to get our ski legs. The clear, moon lit sky was incredible. We could see hood shrouded in darkness but still visible. Breath taking!
We headed back to the condo around 830pm. The others: Glenn, Tom & Tommy were at the hot tub. After checking the outcome of the Super Bowl we changed out of our ski gear and joined the brothers at the hot tub. The Giants won, beat the pats. Can’t recall the final score. Might’ve stayed in the hot tub for 30 minutes until we were pruned.
Back to the condo, we hung out, talked, and drank beer until 11pm Oregon time. Most of us were dog tired.

And We're Off!

Taking Flight!

I woke around 430am feeling surprisingly well rested. I tried unsuccessfully to fall back asleep eventually realizing it fruitless. Somewhere near 5am I rolled out of bed, brushed my teeth, then headed downstairs. My breathing felt a little constricted, but somewhat better than it was the past few mornings. I thought about starting coffee but still wasn't convinced that I was done sleeping.
I logged onto my PC first checking email then editing my blog. After about 40 minutes online I headed to the sofa where I turned on the TV to the Science channel in anticipation of a program on the life of Einstein that was slated to begin at 6am. I got to see about the first 15 minutes before falling asleep. I slept until 715am and then fell asleep again until 745am when I got up once and for all.
I started some coffee then carried on with my morning like most other Saturday's by spending more time online and updating my blog with the entries I edited earlier. The girls had been making noise in Bella's room since around 6am. But sometime after 8am the noise stopped.  I guessed they fell back asleep.
Bella let Eiknarf out of her room and brought to me downstairs. I fooled around online until almost 9am when I took Mindy some coffee just before taking Eiknarf out for a walk. Mindy was grateful for the coffee. I shared that I had already checked us in for our late afternoon flight and was rewarded with group "A" boarding passes. I chose not to check Tommy in not knowing that we'd see him prior to the gate. You print a boarding pass and you're done. You can't get another at the ticket counter. Eiknarf I walked casually to the west where she took care of business. I saw that one of our neighbors has a 2010 Chevy Cobalt for sale. Says only 4300 miles. Odd! I may asked what they're asking if I see them. Can't hurt to ask. But if I've learned anything, it's buyer beware!
Mindy and the girls were up by 930am and all downstairs. I heard the girls ask Mindy to make pancakes. I dressed and left for a run around 10am. It had just started to rain and was expected to keep it up for t he better part of the day, the first such rain in about a week. Because it was raining, I opted to run in my old running shoes. No way I wanted the maiden voyage in my new ones would be in the rain.
I ran three miles in moderate rain wearing some back-up running gear. I actually have multiple sets. I was comfy throughout, the temperature near 37 degrees. Felt a little cooler. Back at home, the kids were finishing up their pancakes. I planned to have some but waited a while. While thinking about it, I sent Tommy & Darwin texts sharing that they may want to do an online check-in to insure preferred seating. Also reminding them that our seats from CMH to Chicago will be out seats all the way to Portland, too. Comfort is a priority on the final leg, especially.
Darwin responded quickly. Tommy did too, reminding me that his PC is down. I called him to ask if he wanted me to do it, but also shared the potential for problems. He opted that I not. He said he doesn't care where he sits. Reminds me of how dad talks about UK - doing all his prep last minute. Wasn't even sure about check-in bags. That's so not me. :)
I enjoyed a couple pancakes and leftover bacon form last Sunday around 11am. I started organizing my carry-on gear soon after, and then added some photos to my blog and even had time to write this entry. More later.

Wow, Now That's Fast

I woke around 5am happily realizing that there was more sleep to be had. I closed my eyes expecting to sleep for another 25-30 minutes, but didn't wake again until 545am. A tad disappointed in myself, I leaped from bed and headed to the master bath where I scrubbed my teeth and collected my running clothes before bolting downstairs to get my morning going.
I still had to prep coffee, having not done so the evening before. That took a couple minutes. It was 555am before I cranked out the first sit-up, and then after 6am by the time push-ups were completed. My lack of discipline resulted in a shortened internet interval. I had to get back a few minutes somewhere. Overnight I got a confirmation email from Finishline that my running shoes shipped. I guess that was good news, though receiving them prior to our departure seemed out of the question. I checked the weather. It was much colder than I imagined, only 27 degrees. I figured it below freezing after seeing frost covering our deck.
I did a brief but fulfilling meditation ahead of waking Mindy and delivering her coffee. As expected, she requested that I crank up the heat.  I should really buy a programmable thermostat. There not expensive and ideal for the way we manage the home's temperature. Note to self.
Downstairs for a stretch, it was already 630am. I ignored the clock instead taking the time I needed for a thorough stretch. I recently read a Yahoo article describing the benefits of a good stretch routine before exercise. It also defined two types of stretching that work well in tandem together - static and dynamic. Static is a stretch that is held in one position for a period of time, whereas dynamic is similar to rolling one's neck or ankles - movement. It was 640a or after when I finished and dressed for a run. I wore full winter attire. My running fleece was stinking to high heaven, especially the right arm pit. Really not sure why. You know it's bad when the wearer can't take it! P-U! I'm guessing it has something to do with what I've eaten because I don't recall sweating any worse lately. Begin Friday, there were only four days of running with it.
It was after 650am when I headed out the door. I knew I needed to clip my run back to three miles if I were to see Mindy before she departed. It was already dawn, a lovely sunrise was only minutes off. A tad chilly, but it was a gorgeous morning for a run. After curbing my run to only three miles I was home with enough time to start Mindy's car and walk the pug before she needed to leave.
Mindy was out the door before I even had a moment to sit. My eggs were waiting in the microwave. Lindsey sent a text earlier reminding me of parent/grandparent lunch with the students at St Mary Magdalene. It started at 11am. I agreed to do it, but was fretting somewhat about needing to be there at 11am. That would mean leaving work no later than 1030am. There's no simple/quick way to get there from Hilliard. I decided that working from home until time to leave for lunch would work well for all parties concerned. That way I wouldn't feel like I was just settled in at work before needing to leave. As soon as my breakfast was done I cranked up my work laptop. I took care of a few tasks including sending an email to my boss sharing my plan. He acknowledging soon after.
I worked until it was time to head out to the bus stop with the kids. There we met Kenny, who was out with Lilly and Makayla. He shared that his knee is doing lots better and that they didn't plan to visit MRM this weekend, so it would have even more time to heal. Reminded me that MRM was planning to have a giant outdoor screen set-up for Super Bowl viewing. Cool! Of course, Mindy & I will be on Mt Hood. The bus showed up on time, and Eiknarf and I headed back home. I did a little more work until about 830am then headed up for a shower. I did a little packing/organizing too.  I  suddenly remembered that it was a Rachel day. Funny, I didn't see a check left for her. I sent Mindy a text inquiring. I don't like being there when she's there to clean. And I know Rachel doesn't like it either. Seems to happen often - the day I choose to stay home is also her day to clean. Mindy soon sent a text back indicating that she attached the check to the fridge via magnet. Ahh, OK. Saw it.
I was showered and ready for work by 915am. Spent the rest of the morning balancing work and home. Left the house for lunch with the boys around 1035am. Meanwhile, it was a gorgeous morning - about 40 and sunny.
I should've expected it, but there were few parking spots anywhere close to the school. Lucky for me, I found one, though, across the street along the curb. I was early by five minutes.  I headed inside to the office where I was told what to do. They paged the boys for me. A woman in the cafeteria downstairs must've recognized me from picking up the boys a time or two from after school care. She asked if I was there to lunch with the boys. Yes. She suggested I simply wait there. She also asked for my $2.50 lunch fee. OK. I offered to pay for the boys lunch too, but she quickly shared that they were already taken care of.
Rocky showed up first and was genuinely happy to see me. No hug, though. That's just not his nature. instead, he was more concerned about whether or not I would give him money for the snack machine. Unfortunately, I see so much of Charles' Michael in him. It's going to take a lot of parenting to steer him down the right track in life. I know all too well that it starts with spending quality time at events such as this. Soon Landon showed up. By then, Rocky and I already had our lunches. I waited for Landon before digging in. He was happy to see me. Asked if his momma was coming too.  No. Not today. They both wanted to know if they could go home with me.  :) No, I've gotta go to work. They didn't want to believe it. We were some of the first to eat. The cafeteria filled up fast. Rocky ate only his pasta and meat sauce. Had no interest in the salad, roll, or Italian ice cream. Kept working me for candy machine money. I resisted.
Knowing that space was limited, I upped with the boys and went for a walkabout the school. In the hall, I happened upon Mrs. Dent. We chatted briefly. I learned only earlier that she's teaching 5th grade this year. I checked out all the graduating class photos fining both Courtney & Lindsey (class of 96 & 00). For some reason, Lindsey wasn't in the class of 98 photo. I soon remembered that she was asked to leave Magdalene and came to live with me and attended Hilliard Weaver instead.
I was impressed that Rocky wanted to talk to his math tutor. She was kind - a bit odd - and asked if we needed help. As a matter of fact, yes. Where and what do I do with the boys? I needed to leave for work. She advised that I should take Landon back to the preschool across the street. Rocky could stay back at the cafeteria. Rocky wanted to walk with me to the preschool. As he does with Lindsey, he darted off across the street without even looking for cars. I made sure he held my hand as we crossed back. Off to work at 1140am.
Arrived at the office close to noon. I hit the ground running, picking up where I left off earlier while at home. I had a 2pm conference call scheduled with a customer. I was away from my office and got sidetracked not realizing my miss until 245pm. I felt awful and scurried back to my office and gave home a call. He was very forgiving for my tardiness. We dealt with the business at hand in the matter of minutes. Afterwards, we exchanged a couple emails making sure we were in synch relative to January month-end numbers.
I spent the last hour or so if my work day tying up loose ends before vacation. These days are always the best. However, I am careful to plan as much for my return as I do for my absence. Nothing worse than coming home to a mess and avoidable chaos. Talked with my boss around 430 confirming that I'd be out of the office next week. Come to learn, two other co-workers (sales guys) are off on ski trips next week, too. One I understand is headed to Bachelor, while the other off to Colorado.
I left for home at 520pm. It was fairly bright on my drive home. I called Mindy as I wound my way towards Target where I planned to pick-up some cough syrup (Delsym). She reminded me that Bella would be going to see Disney on Ice with Chrissy and the girls. They'll be in the company suite. That ought to be fun. The Delsym was ridiculously expensive, almost $10 for a little bottle. I opted instead for Dayquil, which contains the same cough suppressant as well as an antihistamine and it's was $3 less expensive and contained at least twice as much. The Delsym didn't seem to be cutting through my cough anyways.

I arrived home around 540pm. Always feels good to put the badge away for a spell. Resting on my computer chair were my new running shoes. Wow! Now that was fast. That made me very happy! Discussed doing Barley's for dinner, but only after some packing. Bella wasn't home too long before heading to the neighbors and the show. Jacob, meanwhile, complained of a stuffy nose. Uh-oh, a cold, no doubt. He still wanted to do dinner, though.
Mindy and I did some packing over the course of the next 30 minutes. My large suitcase filled in a hurry. Most of it ski and running stuff. Taking only one other pair of jeans, a couple sweaters, undies, socks.  Still need to pack my carry-on but I won't do that until sometime Saturday. It was 620pm when we organized ourselves for dinner at Barley's.
The lot was chalked full. We had no choice but to park in the back 40. Mindy ordered a table, but I had no intentions of sitting. My plan was to stand. I'd been sitting all day long. The wait was significant. We headed to the bar where I ordered a Pale ale and talked with Calvin and Brie. Mindy greeted them, too but then made her way over to Jack & Leslie.  Jacob hung with me and ordered a Dr. Pepper. After 10 minutes or so he and I found our way over to Mindy, Jack & Leslie. I'm thinking we were there 30 minutes minimum before the hostess came calling that our booth was ready. I reiterated my intentions to stand. We already had two bar stools at our disposal, Jacob taking one of them. Mindy agreed and gave our table up to others.
She & Jacob ordered food. Mindy & I both ordered second beers, the last for me since I agreed to drive home. Mindy ordered a salad topped with smoked chicken. Jacob ordered chicken tenders. I snacked on Jacob's leftovers but didn't order an entree for myself. We talked with Jack & Leslie for quite a while. They're a lot of fun, just like us. :)
Mindy settled our tab before we left for home around 845pm. Jacob and I pulled up at the door while Mindy was inside doing what she does best - talk! Nobody likes to point that out more so than Jacob. Bella was home a half hour after we got home. She asked if she could have a sleepover hosting all the neighbors. Mindy agreed. Soon we had four girls in the house. Jacob, meanwhile, complained of feeling miserable all the way home. I suggested he take some of my daytime Nyquil. Mindy laughed at my naming convention. "You mean Dayquil". Yes. Mindy agreed to dose him some Nyquil once we arrived home. She warned him that he would be asleep in 30 minutes. He denied any such affect.
As usual, I was incredibly hungry once back at home. I devoured my leftover Chipotle burrito then poured what was left of the growler in our fridge. I retired to the sofa where I tuned the TV to the NAtGeo channel but can't recall what I watched. Jacob watched too, and made sure to point out that a half hour had passed since he took the Nyquil. Mindy peeled off to bed citing being crazy sleepy. I promised to join her soon.
I could drink about half my pint for falling asleep. As I peeled off for bed, the girls were up in Bella's room giggling and playing. They had Eiknarf with them too. I was in bed before 1045pm. It felt more like a work night. By the way, the Dayquil I took when I got home from work worked like a charm. Felt almost normal.

Shades of Being

I was up a little early again (that’s two days in a row) and downstairs byt 531am. I glanced out back where I could see a few stars then slipped into my exercise shoes just ahead of whipping out 50 sit-ups.

I waited a few minutes for the coffee to finish its brewing cycle then headed to the PC where I checked the weather. It was 34 degrees with an anticipated high near 50 degrees under partly cloudy skies. I played around online for quite awhile, not breaking away until after 6am. I’ve been battling a tight chest/throat since Monday and now a dry cough. I took some Delsym to hopefully curb the cough. The last thing I wanted was to vacation with a cold.

It was 615a when I finished a brief but good meditation. I headed upstairs to wake Mindy with her coffee in hand. She asked that I crank up the heat. Yes dear. I headed back downstairs, adjusted the heat, then completed a thorough stretch. The stretch felt great. I took a few extra minutes to roll a tennis ball under my left foot to help stretch the tendons.

I wore full winter attire for the run and headed out the door just before 640am. I ran the full 4.1 miles. I remembered that it was Ground Hogs day, and judging by the clear skies, I expected him to see his shadow, at least here in Columbus. It was completely clear with a beautiful sunrise coming. I was back at the house by 718am. Mindy hollered for the pug while I grabbed the leash and the Pilot keys. I headed out to start the Pilot before Eiknarf came downstairs, but she was waiting by the door when I got back inside. We headed out to the west where she took care of business in fairly short order. Mindy reminded me & the kids about her parent conferences and said she didn’t expect to be home until about 8pm. My dad was scheduled to get the kids off the bus and then stick around until I arrived home after work. She headed out at her usual time – 730am.

Bella and I finished our breakfasts then fed the pug. I headed to the shower and Bella to her room. Because of Wednesday’s internal strategy meeting, I rearranged my schedule so I could work at my customer’s site in New Albany today. I dressed accordingly. I was downstairs and ready ahead of 8am and quickly threw together a light lunch.

The kids and I headed to the bus stop at our usual time of 810am. Barely got a chance to talk with Kenny before the bus pulled up.  Just like that the kids were gone and Eiknarf and I were headed for home. The first thing I did was start the Accord. It was coated in frost. I then spent a few minutes making sure I had my access badge, mouse and power cord to my laptop. I enjoyed part of a 2nd cup of coffee then headed off to work. I knew leaving the house that I’d most likely need to join our weekly staff call from my car. It was slated to start at 9am.

It was a sunny drive east on 670 to 270N. Traffic wasn’t an issue. Arrived by 855am. There wasn’t anyway I could be in my office and settled before 9am, so I did our weekly staff call from my car in the lot. The call lasted beyond 30 minutes. Knowing that I had a 10am meeting with my customer, I sent my boss an IM letting him know that I was going to drop from the call for a greater good.
Things went pretty smoothly all day long. After finishing up our weekly meeting, I spent the rest of my day working on January monthly reports. Given that I’ll be out the first full week of February, it was critical that I got as much done before hand so I am not scrambling upon my return. I dealt with a couple escalations, too, but nothing out of the ordinary.

With the afternoon fairly calm, I was able to get out of the office somewhat early for a change, leaving for home by 430pm. I took 670W and didn’t experience heavy traffic until I neared the 670/70W split. It slowed to almost a standstill. Lucky for me, the slow down was just before the 33W exit off 670. I quickly diverted to that exit and took Riverside Dr. north to Trabue then home.

Must’ve gotten home just ahead of 5pm. My dad was there with Bella, both of them sitting in the familyroom with the TV on and Bella doing homework. Dad was helping her. I said nothing, just observed. Bella, I could see, was only half listening. I could see that one ear and eye was on the TV program. She knows doggone well that Mindy or I wouldn’t allow her to watch TV while doing homework.

Dad and I chatted briefly. Said Jacob was out playing with friends. Said he heard from mom, knew about her negative carotid artery test and then the cancelation of a bone scan. He didn’t hang out for too long. He asked for clarification on our travel plans, and then shared the days/evenings he would be there to help with the kids while Jimaken’s at school. I really appreciate him doing that for us. It’s nice that he’s so close and the kids like/enjoy him.

I took note that it didn’t get dark until about 610pm, but it comes on really fast. Days are getting noticeably longer. Bella ran off to play with her friends. I had the house to myself. I snacked on peanuts, cheese, and then a few potato chips. I watched perhaps the coolest program ever, A Journey to the Edge of the Universe on NatGeo. It didn’t dive too deep into any one thing but did a great job expressing the entire universe in terms most can relate to. I will recommend this program to many. It ran for about two hours. Later, when searching it via Google, I learned you can replay it from the web. Cool!

After the program, I changed out of my work clothes into my comfy night clothes and then took a brief nap on the sofa. Mindy called around 8pm to say that she was done with her conferences but was stopping at Target and then Chipotle for food. I asked that she call Chrissy and have her send Bella home. Said she would. Jacob had been home for a while and was up in his room playing video games with Evan, until his mother beckoned him. Bella was home a few minutes later and snuggled with me on the sofa while watching American Pickers. Jacob soon joined us.

Mindy got home around 840pm. She brought Jacob and I Chipotle. It was really good. Mindy asked me to check Bella’s homework. I was disappointed with her work, very careless mistakes. She needed to correct almost half the problems. I tried my best to put the problem in terms she could easily relate to. She struggles mightily with division.

No one asked about watching Idol, and I didn’t mention it. I cut my Chipotle burrito in half, and stowed what was left in the fridge. I ate darn near an entire bag of their chips, though. They’re so good! Mindy didn’t have anything. Said she ate earlier at school, a meal provided by the PTA, I believe.  She changed into her PJs then started a load of laundry.

She was online for a while and watched part of Swamp People with me (alligator hunters). That’s a cool show, too.  She was off to bed around 940pm. She asked if I was joining her. But having napped earlier, I got my second wind and certainly wasn’t ready for sleep. I figured to be along in 30 minutes or so. Can’t recall what I watched, but started getting sleepy within fifteen minutes of tucking Bella in. Fell asleep on the sofa and didn’t wake until somewhere near 11pm when I headed up to bed.

Meat Cache

For the first time in a while, I was up and downstairs prior to 530am. Felt good. The coffee maker was set to auto-on at 530am, but I went ahead and manually started the brew process at 529am. I glanced out back unable to see any stars – cloudy.

I headed to the livingroom where in the matter of about 2 minutes I whipped out 50 sit-ups. Loosening my neck, arms, and shoulders along the way, I headed to the familyroom/kitchen to complete 50 push-ups. Done by 540am. I had to wait a few minutes for the coffee to finish brewing.

I checked the current temperature then the forecast. It was 48 degrees with an expected high of 52 degrees under partly cloudy skies. Nice! Supposed to hit 50 each day through Friday with an abundance of sunshine. And looking ten days out there isn’t a spec of winter weather on the way, either. I zeroed in on Saturday’s weather, both here at home and then in Chicago. Both venues will be sporting the upper 30s around our scheduled flight time. That means no flight delays, at least on account of the weather.

Checked email, read headlines, and then bought a pair of running shoes from Finishline online. Hope they arrive before Saturday, but not going to sweat it if they don’t. Redeemed my $20-off coupon.

Delivered Mindy’s coffee near 615-620am. She asked that I bump up the heat. I cranked it up a couple degrees on my way in to meditate and stretch. Despite being up on time, I managed to get behind thanks in part to ordering new running shoes. I didn’t finish meditation and a stretch until 640am. And then it was almost 650am before I headed out the door for my run.

I ran the usual 4.1 miles, once again wearing early spring attire (no hand or ear cover). It was a good run and went really quick. My thoughts turned to our fast approaching ski trip and then how quickly the work week was moving. I promised myself that I would start the packing process later that evening, not allow myself to get complacent. My goal will be to relax Friday night.

I figured there a good chance that Mindy would be gone by the time I got home, but she was still there. I stated the Pilot then leashed up the pug.  We walked across the street where she spent about 5 minutes sniffing before finally doing her business. Mindy was backing out the drive as we made our way back to the house. She rolled down the window so we could exchange farewells and a kiss.

Inside, Mindy had fried eggs waiting in the microwave. Bella was still sitting at the breakfast table enjoying some peanut butter toast while Jacob was already off to his room. I finished my breakfast and fed the pug before heading up for a shower around 740am.

It was Wednesday and the sky was pretty much clear. What? Yeah, no rain! I would typically be spending Wednesday at a customer’s location, but our director was in town to go over our ’12 team strategy. I hadn’t met her prior and was looking forward to it. I dressed handsomely in black dress slacks and a purple button up dress shirt. Was back downstairs near 800am. Over the next few minutes I threw together a lunch then headed out to the bus stop with the kids at 810am. It was quite pleasant – sunny and mild, about 50 degrees. We met Kenny and the girls there. Kenny shared that his knee is now black & blue, but the swelling on the decline. Gave a full description of how it happened. Sounds like the tip of his board got caught in the snow after a small jump and threw him to the ground before he had much time to think. The inside of his left knee hit first. Said he thought it was bleeding immediately after the fall. Used adrenaline to board quickly to the lodge. Ouch!

Bus arrived on time. Kenny & I headed our separate ways. I was fairly quick to gather my things and head off to work leaving by 825am. I arrived at the office by 845am and was settled in ahead of 9am. Our all-day meeting wouldn’t start until 10am, so I made the most of the hour in front of me, pulling together all my monthly report data.

At 955am I headed to the large conference room where the regional team was already gathered. I saw introductions on the agenda, which made me cringe, but that never happened. I abhor that whole process. Our director got started around 1010am and spent the better part of 2 hours reviewing our organizational strategy and then road mapping how we’ll get there. She’s very passionate about the direction of our company as well as the role our team plays in achieving the desired results. That’s a very good thing!

We ordered lunch in, pizza and salad. We took about 30 minutes to eat before diving into some new tools and greater details for our road map. The entire session went until 345pm including closing concerns and questions. I was back in my office just ahead of 4pm where I worked through a couple issues I felt most important. It was 530pm before I knew it. I joined my boss and a peer in the hallway for an impromptu follow-up meeting to our earlier session. I ended up at the office until 6pm. Those two were still talking as I left for home. Told them my dinner was waiting.

Called Mindy as soon as I was on the road for home and out of the deadzone.  Mindy had only recently arrived home after parent conferences at school. Kenny got our kids off the bus. Mindy said dinner was leftovers, and we had a plethora of them: spaghetti & meatballs, pork roast, pizza, etc. I was craving cream of chicken over rice. Offered to make it myself. Mindy had a lot of school work to get completed before Friday. This was a gymnastics night for Bella. I agreed to do both the drop and pick-up.

Arrived home around 620pm. Mindy was prepping leftovers as well as making my cream of chicken over rice.  I thanked her, but also shared that I fully expected to make it. While she took care of warming dinner, I went ahead and packed our skis and ski boots for our trip. That took about 20 minutes. By the way, I decided to take just one pair of skis, my new ones.

It was almost 645pm and already time to run Bella to gymnastics. I planned to drop her off before having any dinner. We left the house near 650pm in the Pilot. Bella was pouting for most of the short drive. When I quizzed her why, she didn’t’ have an immediate response, but as we neared our destination she came clean. She told me that she was going to be 'dead meat'. Told her mom that she didn’t have any homework but just remembered that she had three math problems assigned that needed done along with reading a chapter in her book. First and foremost, I told her that she’d need to stay up until it was completed once we got back home later. And given Bella’s propensity to lie about such things, I let her know that she owned her behavior and would have to suffer any consequence. She repeated that she simply forgot. Oh boy!

DCW is located in a Hilliard strip mall. The place was completely dark when we pulled up. I was concerned that perhaps class was canceled. But Bella insisted this happens often. Said they’d show up soon. I glanced at the clock, it was still a couple minutes in front of 7pm. Sure enough, Emily, her instructor, pulled up in a pick-up along with another student. A pizza delivery guy pulled up at the same time. Apparently Emily ordered a pizza to be delivered to the studio. I confirmed everything was good then headed home.

Mindy was already finished eating and already sitting at her laptop busy making sub plans. My cream of chicken and rice was ready on the stove.  I had two small bowls, and it was delicious! I asked her to use brown rice. It was a little dry, but more flavorful than the white Minute rice. After dinner, I cleaned the entire kitchen and then some. The clutter was driving me crazy.

I had the kitchen/familyroom in order near 745pm. I went to my PC where I updated my blog from the day before and then responded to a couple emails. It was after 8pm and time to go after Bella in the blink of an eye. Mindy & Jacob were in the family room watching Idol. I’ve already bored of it. Don’t plan to get too involved in it this season. I left the house around 825pm. Bella was on the trampoline practicing her first ever front flip and being coached by Shelly. When the moment was right I told Shelly how good a job she did delivering a eulogy at her grandma Lucy’s funeral. I went on to share how it might’ve been the happiest funeral I’ve ever attended. It truly felt like a celebration of one’s life rather than a sad experience. I gave her a hug, too.

Bella was in a far better place after gymnastics. I only shared that I had her math problems laid out on the kitchen table for her to complete once we got back home. That was my way of helping ease a difficult situation. She sucked it up and headed in still very concerned what her mom might say, or worse yet, what punishment she might dole out. I made sure she got started on her work then left the two alone. I don’t think Mindy made too big a deal of it.

Come 9pm, I poured Mindy and I each a beer from the growler we bought two weeks ago from CBC. It had been opened only once, so it was still reasonably fresh. Glad we didn’t have to dump it. I soon found my way to the sofa and the remote hoping to find The Universe on the History Channel. It’s usually on Wednesdays. To my surprise, it wasn’t on. Crap! I ended up watching a program about wolly mammoth fossils they found near Snow Mass, Colorado. The interesting part was that they believed it to be a ‘meat cache’ from the native people. The controversy is that the bones and ground around were dated to be as much as 45,000 years old, far earlier than any other remnants of humans in America. As for now, it’s just a hypothesis. Time and testing will tell.

Mindy and the kid headed to bed around 920pm. After getting the kids settled and tucked in, I returned to the family room to watch a little more TV. This time I watched a program about Great White sharks. A group of scientists actually dissected one on the shore. It was very detailed, and very interesting. Learned quite a bit. I stayed up until near 1040pm. By then my eyes were heavy enough for sleep. Good night half moon.
