Pneumatics & Snowshoe

Monday, January 19 - Pneumatics

Below freezing at 630am – 28 degrees mostly clear skies. Got up to 39 later in the day. Felt nice!

Ran 4 miles

Worked from the main office.

Left for lunch and home near 145pm. Made arrangements to borrow Tom Clark’s pneumatic nailers for basement trim. Agreed to meet at his place near 2pm. Hadn’t seen Tom for an embarrassingly long time – at least 6 months, probably longer.

Said he’s gym’ng and running again. Good to hear! Showed me around the house. Not much progress since last visit. Says he’s lost motivation to complete the remodel. He does really good work.

Gave me two pneumatic nailers to use: a smaller nailer for the jamb side of the door trim and a larger nailer for the jackpost and floor trim. Demo’d loading both.

Tuesday, January 20

Another nice late January day, 32 degrees at 630am, 41 and sunny midafternoon.

Ran 4 miles

Worked across town.

Stopped at Home Depot on my drive home and picked up finish nails for Tom’s guns (1.25” 18 gauge for the jamb and 2” 16gauge for the floor trim).

Wednesday, January 21 – Date Night CBC

More mild weather. Partly clear most of the day. 36 degrees at 630am, 39 late afternoon.

Ran 4 miles

Worked across town.

Date night CBC – No Bodhi. Enjoyed a side salad and wings along with a couple guest IPAs

Thursday, January 22 -

Mostly cloudy. Temp remained near freezing- 32 degrees - for most of the day.

Ran 4 miles

Worked from home early AM and again later afternoon.

Midday, worked across town again – Quarterly presentation. Went well.

Mindy had an after-school event that didn’t get her home until sometime after 630pm. The original plan called for me to take the kids to dinner.

Ran Bella to and from gymnastics. Stopped at Steak n’ Shake on our drive home to get her some dinner. Mindy was already in bed when we got home.

Friday, January 23 – Firkin Friday

Partly sunny – 28 degrees at 630am – 34 by midafternoon.

Ran three miles.

Worked from home.

Installed door trim. Long time coming. Had to make a quick run to Home Depot to buy 1” 18 gauge brads. The 1.25” brads I bought earlier in the week were too long for the smaller gun.

Wow, what a difference a pneumatic nailer makes. Started out just hoping to get one door completed, but it went so well (fast) that I was able to do all four. Only two required both sides. Both closets just the exposed side.

Mindy the kids and I headed to Barley’s for dinner.

Saturday, January 24  - Pack, prep for Snowshoe trip

Weather almost a repeat of Friday - perhaps a bit cloudier.

Watched boys so Lindsey could work OT. She dropped them off at 745am.

Ran three miles around 9am or once Mindy was up

Cut floor trim for the front half of the basement and up the stairwell. Went better than expected though I made a couple errant cuts. A simple youtube video I watched a couple weeks ago gave me some very good (useful) tips.

Took the kids (gkids included) to dinner at Joe’s Rusty Bucket in Dublin. Enjoyed a torpedo and wedge salad. Shared an order of fried pickles too. Drank lemonade since I wanted to be up by 5am Sunday morning for my Snowshoe ski trip.

Landon didn’t care for his chicken tenders – pouted through dinner. I stopped and picked up McDonald’s chicken nuggets for him on the way home. That made him happy. Dropped the boys at home near 815pm.

Headed to bed at 855pm. Mindy wasn’t pleased when she found me in bed about 15 minutes later. She wanted some snuggle time. I was tired and eager for a good night’s sleep. Yes, I was in trouble!

Sunday, January 25 Snowshoe

Up at 445am. Partly cloudy near freezing – 34 degrees. After some coffee, a brief meditation and stretch, I headed out for a run near 505am Ran three miles.
Back at the house near 535am. Immediately loaded the Pilot for the ski trip. All I needed to do was shower and pack the travel cooler. Took a shower in the dark so to minimize disturbing Mindy’s sleep. Hustled through a shower. Dressed and ready to go by 550am. Gave Mindy hug and kiss goodbye. Expressed frustration for me not wanting to snuggle last night. Promised to call later.

On the road by 605am. Stopped at Circle K to fill-up the gas tank. Took about 5 gallons ($1.79 per).
Per Tommy’s suggestion, I took I-70 to 256 to Hill Rd. Passed his driveway. It’s very dark along that section of road. I could only roll my eyes when he shared that he misunderstood my arrival time. Said he thought I was leaving my house at 630am. Uh, no. Arriving at YOUR house at 630am. Wasted little time loading his gear. I was frustrated when my camera fell out of my inside jacket pocket. Seemed to work fine, however. Yikes!

Headed south on Hill Rd to route 33 (just a few miles). Gorgeous drive down 33 through Lancaster bypass, Hocking County, Athens etc. Lovely sunrise too and a few inches of soft fluffy snow coating the ground and trees.

Picked up route 50 once in Parkersburg, WV. Easy drive for the first 200 miles +/-. David called once we were about 87 miles out. We stopped for our 2nd pee break. David had just arrived at Snowshoe. Advised that there was zero VZW coverage on the mtn. Said he’d wait for us but might go ski a little. Although just 70 miles out, navigation said another 100 minutes. From that point it was a lot of 2-lane country highway eventually winding, twisting and turning up the mountain.

Being the passenger, Tommy got a case of motion sickness. Closed his eyes for the last 30-40 miles in. Arrived at Snowshoe resort at 1145am. Reminds me of Timberline Rd, the last couple miles. Yikes!
No cell service, we hoped to find David hanging out in the lodge restaurant or bar. Nope! At the desk the young woman shared that he left our names. Said he would either be skiing or eating. She checked, our room still wasn’t ready. I didn’t expect it to be. Still just before noon and check–in time wasn’t until 3pm.

We redeemed our lift ticket vouchers and headed to the Pilot to get our ski gear. Just as we were walking in the lodge to change, David appeared out of nowhere. On the slopes a few minutes later – the Silver Creek Lodge area (Snowshoe is split into three distinct areas – none snow ski contiguous). Skied 4 or 5 runs at Silver Creek before shuttling over to the Top of the Hill or the main ski area. Silver Creek is the only night skiing, which is why we opted to lodge there.

Short shuttle drive to the main area which is much newer and very much resembles thee town center at Park City – very nicely done! Very modern, lots of shops, restaurants, etc. I wanted to fetch a trail map but David was insistent about going ahead. Against my better judgment, I acquiesced. We pretty much winged it all afternoon.

Right away, the mountain vistas caught my eye. It was absolutely gorgeous – stunning even. Had much more of an out west look and feel to it. The snow was decent, with a fresh couple inches the night before, but most of the fresh stuff was skied off. The temps hovered just above or near freezing. And most of the runs I stayed along the trails edge in the deeper crud which I absolutely loved!

Pretty much all the ski trails are cut into a conifer forest, again gorgeous. I was loving it! It should also be noted that the resort begins at the top of the lifts, not at the base. That’s different than anywhere else I’ve been, though Timberline in midway.

Comparing the runs to HV, I give the nod to Snowshoe. As for the lifts and ease of getting around, well that nod goes to HV. Most of the Snowshoe lifts are older three-man chairs and slow. They do, however, have Ballhooter, which is the main high speed quad in the center of the main ski area. But it’s also the most crowded and the subsequently the lines were ridiculously long. I have to say, however, the lift cops were very efficient though.

Skied until 430pm then headed into the village for dinner and a beer. David lead us to a small restaurant recommended to him by a season pass holder. Decent food and beer. I had the special: ½ roasted chicken, red beans and rice along with a couple craft IPAs. Good stuff.

After dinner we shuttled back to the Silver Creek lodge and checked into our condo. Nice! 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, full kitchen, balcony on the 6th floor overlooking the tubing hill. David and I called home from the condo phone, apparently free of charge. Headed to the hot tub around 7-730pm. Surprised that the local help stood guard at the entrance door making sure we had no beverages, even those in plastic cups were against their rules. We stood near the door chatting until we finished.

Spent about 30 minutes in the hot tub with a group of college kids from Va. Beach. Did 10 minutes in the sauna before heading back to the condo. Enjoyed some popped corn and TV. Headed to bed before 10pm. Mindy requested I call her back just before heading to bed. Talked for just a couple minutes. Snowing hard.

Champions, Strong Water, Four Strings, MRM, Minelli's & a Flipin' Day in Cincy - Jan 12-18

Monday, Jan 12 – OSU Champs!! Bucks blast the Donald Ducks

Up near 615am, Very icy. Bella shared that our front stoop was crazy slippery as she and Jacob made their way out and down the driveway for the b us stop. No major school districts closed or delayed. A little surprised.

Exercise, coffee and internet. Meditation, stretch then run. Didn’t run until 815am or just after.
Ran 4 miles very carefully. Ran where cars had traveled before me, adequately roughing up the ice just enough that I could get a little traction. A couple less traveled off shoots sections were very slippery.

Despite the slippery roads, I still planned to work from the office but didn’t leave the house until 1015am. Once out of the subdivision the roads were in great shape. Worked from the office until 430pm. Temps headed back below freezing for most of the work week. By the way, a significant portion of last Monday night’s snow remains on the ground.

Believe we had burgers for dinner. For most of us in Ohio, it was a big night – the national championship game.  Earlier in the day I made tentative plans to watch the game with neighbors Pat & Lisa whom we haven’t hung with in a really long time. As a matter of fact, haven’t hung with any of our neighbors for a long time.

Those plans changed when Bella suddenly came down with a fever around dinner time. She was asleep on the sofa from my arrival home from work through dinner. Mindy dosed her up with Advil and then asked if I could work from home on Tuesday should her fever worsen, continue.

The game kicked off at 830pm. Before then, I did little more than fritter the time away. Sent Pat a text sharing that we wouldn’t be coming over for the game due to Bella’s not feeling well.

Buckeyes looked a little slow and mistake prone early on, and Oregon went right down and scored a TD. Jacob was beside himself. I reminded him that this was the third OSU national championship game that we shared together and while the Buckeyes started hot and scored first in the prior two, we ultimately lost and lost big. Perhaps this was just what we needed. Looking back, that was brilliant analysis. Despite numerous turnovers, the Buckeyes soon took over and really never looked back. We won 42-20 on the back of Ezekiel Elliot (rb) and Cardale Jones (3rd string QB) as well as a swarming defense. Oregon’s Heisman QB, Mariota looked confused most of the night.

Given that it was a work night and the fact that I was tired, I drank nothing more than ice water during the game. However, once it was over I popped open the rocket of Wee Heavy from Blind Squirrel Brewing that David sent. Sipped maybe 6 ounces, but no more.

Up till 1am watching the postgame celebration and then simply trying to calm my mind.

Tuesday, January 13 – Infirmary

Before going to bed, I already knew that I’d be working from home since Bella’s fever was up near 102 late the night before. To that end, I slept a few extra minutes not getting up and out of bed until almost 655am. I heard Jacob head out the front door for the bus. That was pretty much my queue to get up and moving.

All of us were slow to motivate after staying up so late watching the game. I tinkered with the thought of skipping calisthenics but thankfully didn’t let that slacker mentality take over. Did my full routine just 30-45 minutes later than usual. I had a dental appointment scheduled for 1030am – crown prep. Despite keeping an eye on Bella, I still planned to go. Before heading out for a run, I made sure to check on Bella and let her know that I was leaving. Said she wanted nothing. I made sure she had fresh water. Noted that her room smelt like an animal cage (gerbil!!). J

Cold. Only 18 degrees. Ran just three miles, but not at all because of the cold. Instead, I wanted to be back for Bella as well as getting an early start to my dental appointment. Back from my run, walked the pug, had breakfast, and then a shower before 940am. I checked on Bella then left for my dental appointment. Arrived at 1005am – a full 25 minutes early.

Despite my early arrival, Lora came to get me right away. As we often do, chit chatted about family, vacations, and what not. Soon she and Dr March had me good and numb. The plan was to remove a large filling in an upper left mouth molar and replace it with a crown. Dr March said there was lots of wear and a micro crack in the old filling. It’s an area that give me trouble or pain from time to time, so I didn’t push back, though I did ask if it simply made sense to try replacing the filling. He talked me into the crown.

I could feel the drilling a little so he stopped long enough to poke me a couple more times with more number stuff. When they resumed I couldn’t feel a thing. Unfortunately, with so many tooth problems as a young adult, I am all too familiar with the crown process, which has only gotten more precise, more technical over the years. Dr March is very adept at the prep. Lora does all of the molds and then make the temp crown. Used to be 3 weeks before the permanent crown would be in, but this time he said it would be just 2 weeks. I double checked that it would be all porcelain. Yes. He also shared that that technology has advanced since my last crown. Almost all are made of pressed porcelain now and very, very strong.

Before leaving, I joked with he and Lora about knowing I’d be coming back in a few days to have them re-glue the temp. Always comes off. Lora reminded me NOT to floss around the temp crown, or for that matter, pick at it. Was out of there well before 11am and on my way home. Arrived home near 11am.

Checked on Bella. Despite her not wanting any food or water, I insisted she eat and take more Advil. She soon came downstairs to watch. She eventually ate but only peanut butter and crackers. Said she felt markedly better. Felt cooler to the touch too. Mindy, by the way, planned to stay home with Bella on Wednesday. In fact, said was already making arrangements for coverage while at school that day.

During my lunch hour, I headed to the basement where I installed the door knobs on all four doors. Didn’t take too long at all, not even an hour. Cleaned up my paint roller and trays too. Must’ve been late in the day when Bella shared that Advil was a miracle drug. Indeed! Now she’s catching on! Mouth still numb.

Mindy put a beef roast in the crock pot before she left for work. Around 530 we had dinner: roast, cooked carrots and leftover baked potatoes. Had salad too. Because she was under the weather, Bella wasn’t going to gymnastics. I guess you’d say it made our evening that much easier. Not a long night. After staying up so late the night before, we were all in bed shortly after 9pm.

Wednesday, January 14 – date night @ Strong Water

Cold start. Only 8 degrees at rise time. Mindy was staying home with Bella so I didn’t bother waking her when I rolled out of bed near 630am. Did my usual exercise routine, coffee, and internet. Guessing it was near 8am when I headed out for a run, reverting once again to my extreme cold gear (long johns and extra fleece).  Ran four miles. Cold but beautiful morning.

Mindy was up by the time I was back and had eggs waiting for me. I walked the pug then enjoyed the food. When I left for work, we weren’t sure about date night. Felt there better chance that we’d bag it for Bella being sick. As it was, her fever was back middle of the night.

Arrived across town near 1030am. Despite a somewhat later arrival, once a couple work calls were out of the way, I left for a lunch near 1pm bent on making a run to Lowes to pick-up a couple things – wall plated for the basement switches and outlets. Bought a sconce fixture for the support post too. It’s the same one I picked out way back in late September.

Back to work by 2pm. By then it was mostly cloudy but still cold, only about 20 degrees. Left the office for home near 415pm. Called Mindy but talked less than a minute. Called Tommy next. Asked if he’d had a change of heart about our Utah trip. Said he’d thought about it more than once but that he wasn’t going. Instead, needs to focus on acquiring his new store in Lancaster. We talked for a while, including how much fun Wally had skiing at HV. Said he and Wally plan to meet up with us at MRM on Saturday.

We hadn’t yet nailed down dinner plans. The kids were still home when I arrived, which was still a little before 5pm. Shortly after Jimaken picked them up we decided on Strong Water, a bar in the gentrified area just west of COSI and right across the street from Land-Grant Brewpub.

We left the house relatively early – still before 530pm. Their lot was packed with far more cars than available bar space. What I didn’t’ realize is that they have some party areas in the back where they were hosting a large event. The main bar was pretty barren. We took two stools at the bar, pretty much where we sat last time in.

Met Mike, a bartender and wannabe artist. The artist/bartender we met last visit was there again too. He actually remembered our names. That had to be a couple months ago. Good memory, especially considering that we were there for no more than an hour. I went with a Dog Fish 60 minute IPA. Had two during our 90 minute visit. Enjoyed some food too. Started with some tiny sandwiches and later a couple tacos - one beef, one chicken. Mike shared that he also bartends at Four Strings brewery and tasting room in Grandview. The tasting room is open only Thursday and Friday evenings, and then Saturday afternoons. Been wanting to check it out. Told him we just might stop in over the coming weekend.

Before heading home, my curiosity got the best of me. After taking a pee, I slipped back to the event room to see what was going on. Must’ve been 100-150 people at the who’s who of Columbus event.

Arrived home near 8pm. Can’t remember if the kids were already home or not. To bed a short time later.

Thursday, January 15 - Steak n' Shake ... and bake

Started out cold but promised to pierce the freezing barrier by late afternoon. Only 15 degrees at rise time. Bella was finally heading back to school after staying home both Tuesday and Wednesday. Said she felt a whole lot better.

Planned to work from the office. Headed in after a run, breakfast, and shower. Arrived hear 10am.

Once again, I was the only person from my team in the office making for an incredibly quiet day. Took care of several calls and meetings. Remained at the office until lunch time. Worked from home the rest of the afternoon. Ended up working well past. In fact, engaged until almost 8pm, but on and off.

Mindy took Bella to gymnastics. I planned to handle the pick-up. Took a brief nap and played on my PC ahead of that. Left the house near 845pm.

Without her asking, I stopped in Steak n' Shake drive-thru to get Bella a milk shake. We were behind an SUV at the order signage where it seemed something wasn’t right with the driver. She must’ve sat there at the order entry point for 5-10 minutes. I was growing more and more impatient with each passing minute. She started to pull ahead more than once only to stop and speak into the microphone to apparently change her order. Ugh!

Once we got to the pick-up window, I asked the Steak n' Shake employee what took the prior customer  so long. Said she couldn’t decide what she wanted. Really? That long? Of course our drama with this woman didn’t end there. She stopped just ahead of us at the window, and then crept slowly out of the lot and onto the roadway. Yep, going the same way we were going. Swerving too. Yikes! Just before we get on the 270 on ramp she changed lanes. Bella could see her yacking on the phone. Ugh!

At home Mindy was already off to bed. Bella headed for a shower while I popped some popcorn and tuned into primetime on demand watching a couple recent Big Bang episodes. I really like the primetime on demand. To bed just before 11pm.

Friday, January 16 – Four Strings & Barleys

Slept in until 630am. By then Mindy was already out of bed, prepped her coffee and was getting into the shower. Downstairs I completed calisthenics then settled in front of my PC. By then the kids were out the door for school.

Weather-wise, it was another day just like Thursday. Temps started off in the low 20s but were expected to climb just above freezing by midafternoon. Unfortunately, was supposed to be even warmer over the weekend with highs in the low 40s. Mindy and I planned to ski on Saturday. Actually, I’ve come to appreciate the upper 30s and sunshine – mushy corn snow as long as it’s not knee deep.

Even though it was a Jimaken weekend, the kids were given option of skiing with us on Saturday but both declined. I was a little disappointed given that it was mid-January and they haven’t used their season pass even once. And because Bella has a gym meet on Sunday in Cincy, Jimaken would be bringing her home some time Saturday evening.

Took care of a few looming work issues ahead of my run. Got out the door near 815am. Ran just three miles. Good run.

After my run, breakfast and then a couple hours of work, I took care of a few nagging to-do’s, taking down the exterior Xmas decorations (lights and wreath). Needed the extension ladder for the wreath. Before hanging back in the garage,  I carried it inside to the vaulted family room where I washed those nasty drips of whatever the heck that was dripping down our walls in a couple of places. I also retrieved the burnt bulb from the track light fixture above the fireplace. I really thought that I’d make a Lowes run that after for replacement bulbs but never did. Got too busy with work.

By the way, I was covering for a peer who was vacationing. And as it turned out, most of my day was spent taking care of issues for him.

The kids were home around 3pm, Mindy around 430pm. Jimaken came after the kids around 5pm. Mindy made plans to visit Four Strings brewery taproom for happy hour. I was much looking forward to the new experience. Thinking it nearing 6pm when we finally headed out. We didn’t plan to stay too long. Instead, planned to end up at Barley’s. Shared our Steak & Shake drive-thru story with Mindy during our drive.

Found the brewery with little trouble. It’s across the street from the ever popular Brazenhead that sits on 5th avenue. Four Strings in actually on 6yj avenue which looks more like an alley in an old warehouse looking building. All brewery with a small taproom with a bar and a handful of tables – nothing fancy by any means.

Mike, the kid we met at Strong Water Wednesday date night, recognized us right away and sounded excited to see us. Said he was just talking about us. They had five beers on tap – 2 IPAs, a black ale, a pale ale, and a vanilla porter infused with chicory and hazelnut blonde. I went with one of the IPAs while Mindy went with a flight of four.

She opted for the 2 IPAs, the infused porter and the black ale. She really liked the infused porter. Too sweet for me. Mindy gave Mike one of brother Glenn’s figure drawings. Mike’s an aspiring artist, who shared some of his sketches with us on Wednesday. We weren’t there too long but enjoyed the visit.

Headed for Barley’s near 7pm. Not too many regulars on hand, especially for a Friday. However, getting there about the same time as us was one of the twins – Kurt or Kent. Charlie, who lives on Lake Choctaw was there too. We chatted with the two of them for a while. All three of us have a common current event – each of us in varying stages of finishing our basements. We talked about that for quite a while.

Mindy and I eventually settled on a sampler platter. It comes with wings, riblets, pita, hummus and sauerkraut balls. About the time that I was ready to order a 2nd Double Dog, Bob Imber showed up. We hung out for an hour or so talking about skiing, of course. We planned to meet at MRM the following day, too. It would be the first time all of us were there this season.

Thinking it was near 830pm when we headed for home. Once home, I poured a White Rajah, my 4th beer of the night but spread over the last 3 hours. We listened to some music, me playing my bongos. Fun! We headed for bed near 10pm or just after.

Saturday, January 17 – Another Bluebird MRM day & Minelli’s pizza

We planned on going to MRM but didn’t have a specific time we planned to be there. To that end, I slept until I was rested, which was somewhere close to 8am. Downstairs, I enjoyed coffee and internet before finally heading off on a run around 9am. As usual, ran three miles. It was mostly sunny and in the low 30s.

I knew Mindy was awake before I headed back inside. The giveaway being our bedroom blinds pulled opened. I was a little surprised however that she had most of our ski gear by the door and breakfast on the stove. That saved a lot of time. Thinking it was near 11am when we left for MRM. I opted to take my Mantras, the first time skiing on them since I bought the Sick Days last January. Wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the snow conditions, though I knew it was supposed to reach into the low 40s.

On our drive, learned we learned that the Imber’s weren’t too far behind us. Tested Tommy too, asking if he and Wally were on their way. Yep, just leaving Picktown. Thinking it was near 1130am when we parked. Not as crowded as I expected, which is good. It was 1145am by the time we were geared up and headed up Four Star. Did a run or two before we hooked up with the Imber’s and Cubra’s. Bob and Tina had been there for a couple hours already and were just finishing up a beer and food break. They always get there early.
Didn’t hook up with Tommy and Wally for a while. Aside from going after rental gear, not sure what took them so long. At any rate, we didn’t hook up until we took a deck break on the hill near 230pm. That was really fun. Broke out pocket beers and “medicine” bottles. Must’ve hung our up there for 30 minutes or so. Skied for another hour before heading in for some food. Mindy and I were hungry, and I was super thirsty for water.

The lodge was crowded but not overtly so. Got a small round table next to Chris and Tammy, who had her son Adler with ‘em. I fetched a pitcher of IPA while Mindy went after some food in the cafeteria. Soon we were joined by Bob and Mary Ann, the Cubra’s, who were getting ready to head home, and later Tommy and Wally. Good times. Before we headed out we caught up with Darwin and family. Even Connie was skiing! Darwin’s no fool. Gotta get momma on skis, and then addicted. Then he’ll have a built in winter family vacation like us. J

Darwin, Tommy and I did a few turns together after break. Asked Tommy if he’d be up for a three-day Snowshoe trip the following Sunday thru Tuesday – just he, me and David. He was very warm to the idea, but needed a day to work out coverage. Asked Darwin too. Said he’d love to but couldn’t.

Mindy and I stayed until 7-730pm. I was exhausted as we packed for home. Once again, agreed to order a Minelli’s pizza on our drive home and pick it up along the way. Mindy also sent Jimaken a text letting him know that we’d be home shortly so he could drop off Bella. Had to be near 830-845pm when he and Jacob dropped her off.

Once settled and after walking the pug, I sent David a text asking of his interest in Snowshoe Sun-Tues. Mindy and I devoured the pizza which was very delicious. Still had a slight buzz from our day at MRM.

Mindy and I headed to bed near 10pm, both of us really tired and sleepy.

Sunday, January 18th - Happy 33rd Birthday Lindsey

We needed to be in Cincy for Bella’s gym meet by 1130am, and by all accounts it would be a 2hr drive. So, to ensure I had enough time to enjoy coffee, meditate, stretch, run and shower, I figured to be up no later than 7am.

Actually up a few minutes before 7am, but wanted to sleep a lot longer. Such is life. But once I had a little coffee in me I was fine. It was around 740am before I was out the door for a run. Ran three miles. It was around 40 degrees and drizzling light rain.

Mindy was up and out of shower by my return. Bella was up too. Already 820am. Yikes, I felt a tad rushed to shower. Ready to go by 845am. We only had enough time for some peanut butter toast. Made a couple to-go coffees. Bella wasn’t in the highest of spirits. Not entirely sure why, though it should be noted that she’s going through some physiological changes that impact her mood (heh-um). I offered to stop somewhere to get her breakfast along the way I had Wendy’s or McDonald’s in mind. We needed to gas up too.

Left the house very near 9am sharp. Stopped at the Pilot/Wendy’s at the I-70 on ramp where we gassed up then went through the Wendy’s drive-thru getting Bella a breakfast combo. Boring drive down I-71. Exited onto 275 east around to Mason – about 10 miles – and then five miles down a few winding roads until we arrived at the gym.

The gym was perhaps the nicest one we’ve been in, a large gym with lots and lots of equipment. Had seating set up behind barrier tape. We sat right behind John and Carolyn, Kelly F’s parents and Callen and Laurel’s grandparents.

Bella’s first competition was trampoline, but it was very hard to see since it was a sunken trampoline. After her first event it was another hour before the next, mini tramp. I pulled my ballcap down over my eyes and took a brief nap. After that event which put us near 140pm, we decided it was time for food. We headed back towards the freeway in search of lunch. Until then, I’d only had one slice of peanut butter toast. I was hungry!

We took notice of a few food offerings on our way in. To mention a couple, there was a Gold Star Chili and a Quaker Steak & Lube. A few others too. Nothing was a slam dunk, and when  I offered that we do Gold Star Chili Bella quickly pooh-poohed it. And when she countered with Subway, I pooh-poohed that. Mindy agreed that Quaker Steak & Lube was the answer.

It wasn’t until we were seated that Bella gave me the stink eye and silent treatment, eventually sharing that she didn’t want anything on their menu. I ordered their wings and rings, Mindy their burger and rings. And after a little encouragement from her mother, Bella eventually opted for boneless wings medium.

Hadn’t had Quaker Steak wings since before the days of Mindy. Guessing it was 2002/03 time frame. Back then they were all the rage locally. Anyway, I wasn’t impressed. They were plenty big enough but chewy, unevenly cooked and sauced. On the other hand, the onion rings were super good. Mindy said her burger was delicious. As for Bella’s boneless wings, she hardly ate any of them. They weren’t boneless wings at all. Instead, unbreaded chicken strips. Probably better quality meat, but Bella wanted no part of them. In part, anyway, she was punishing me by not enjoying her lunch. J

Back to the gym arriving near 330pm. Bella’s 3rd and final event – floor - was at 4pm. And actually, they were running a little ahead. She did really well, especially given that this used to be her undoing. She placed 2nd.

It was after 430pm by the time we collected her awards and said our goodbyes. Still, we were on the road for home sooner than we figured to be. Listened to the 2nd half of the Seahawks/Packers championship game on the drive home. At the half, the Packers lead 16-0, and according to the ESPN pundits, Wilson was having the worst game of his career, tossing 2 or 3 interceptions before half.

The drive home went faster than the drive down, and that was probably due to the distraction of the game. 110 miles in total. Pretty sure that we were home near 6pm, or just in time to see the results of the Seattle onsides kick-off. Well publicized, they came back and won. Shocked the football world. Just when it seemed impossible.

Over the next hour David and I exchanged texts and eventually a phone call in an attempt to nail down lodging arrangements for Snowshoe. Eventually agreed on a 3 bedroom w/kitchen, which is complete overkill, but hey. My only must have was separate beds – no sharing a bed with Tommy and or David. J

Lodging prices are far more reasonable than HV. Got the 3 bedroom for about the same price as a regular room at the Inn at HV, which is the equivalent of standard hotel room. And split three-ways, the cost wasn’t bad at all – with taxes, about a $100 each per night.

Purchased lift tickets online next. David begged out of that deal since he gets a military discount, but must buy in person. Not sure how much if any he’ll save.

Watched the AFC title game next – Patriots/Colts. Sorry Sean! Your Colts were way overmatched. Maybe next year. Based on this year’s results, I am picking the Patriots to win it all. Had them from the outset of the playoffs.

Sub Zero Calamity - Jan 5 - 11

Monday, Jan 5 – Return to the office

Much colder Monday. Only 25 degrees at wake time. Snow storm on its way and temperatures continuing to drop into the single digits. Ran 4 miles after Mindy and the kids left for school. Was nice to be back to our normal schedule along with my quiet mornings. The pug and I enjoyed eggs for breakfast too. Yum!

Worked from the main office, arriving there just before 10am, though I’d been working from home since roughly 7am. Fairly quiet return to work. It didn’t hurt that I spent about an hour the evening from home sorting/filtering email catching up on what  took place during my one week absence. Already planning my next vacation. In fact, we’ve had it planned since October, I think. I sent a note to my peer asking if he’d be able to cover me. Said he could, but also asked that I cover him for a couple weeks prior. Sure. Felt good to have that taken care of.

At lunch time I made a run to Lowes. However, for the life of me, I can’t readily recall for what. At the office until almost 5pm. By the time I left for home it was in the lower teens – Brrrr! Still calling for 3-5” of snow overnight. Spent about an hour that evening monkeying with the rubbing basement door. Ugh!

Tuesday, Jan 6 – Puzzling Calamity Day

Cold and snowy. I woke sometime after midnight and noted that it hadn’t yet begun to snow. However, when I woke again near 4am I noticed that it was snowing. Sometime around 530am, Mindy got an alert via smart phone sharing that school was canceled. And by the time I was out of bed, which I am guessing was about 615am, we were blanketed in 3 or 4” of fresh fluffy snow. Still coming down, too. Not only that, but it was really cold too – only 18 degrees and continuing to drop.

I went through my usual work morning ritual – exercise, internet, coffee, etc. I figured I’d wait to run until it was daylight.
Headed out for a run near 8am. Ran just three miles, navigating mostly in tire ruts. Thankfully the snow was so light and fluffy that it provided little if any resistance. Fun! Still snowing quite heavily during my run. At home, I opted to shovel the drive and walks before heading inside. About halfway through, Mindy came out and helped. Thanks dear. Not too many wives/women are out shoveling snow. All totaled, we spent about 30 minutes shoveling. Mindy shared that my breakfast was waiting in the microwave.

Walked Eiknarf before eating breakfast. She struggled but found her way through the belly-deep snow. By then the snow had tapered to mere flurries. At some point one of my work peers agreed to cancel our on-site meeting and instead offered that we join remotely. Fine with me. It made little sense to attempt a cross town drive in the inclement weather.

Near noon, Rocky phoned asking if he could come over and play. Landon apparently didn’t want to come. Lindsey, by the way, called off to stay at home with the boys. I stayed busy with work while the kids (boys) played outside. I’ll bet that Jacob and Rocky were out there for 3-4 hours.

As the afternoon turned into early evening I went to the basement determined to pull the bathroom door out and do a rehang. To do so meant I’d have to remove the nails and shims. The jam was already looking like it was 20 years old. Still, I knew leaving it there would only mean trouble down the road. I decided to plow forward. To remove it, I carefully chiseled away at all the shims, effectively splintering all of them. Once I had all the nails exposed, I carefully pried it away from the framing.

When Mindy hollered down that dinner was ready, she was angry when I shared that I wasn’t hungry. She insisted I join them for dinner anyway. Yes dear! Probably needed the break. As it was, I was frustrated with the damn door thing. Can’t seem to make any real progress. After dinner I sent Kenny a text asking if he could come over and help me rehang it some time that week. He quickly replied that he would but just not that night. I was good with that. Needed to buy more shims and thicker, longer nails (10d – 3”).

Agreed to deliver and pick-up Bella from gymnastics saving Mindy a trip. My plan was to stop at Lowes in between the drop and pick-up and get those items. Mindy was appreciative. After dropping Bella, I called David to nail down whether or not he and Anita would be coming in for a weekend visit. We talked for a while, David sharing that they wouldn’t be able to make it.

Inside Lowes for about 30 minutes. Opted to take my time since I didn’t need to be back at the gym until 9pm. Hung at Lowes getting nails and shims until 820pm. Talked with Levon and Kelly upon my early arrival. Levon shared that we were in arrears for Bella’s gymnastics fees. Oh! Agreed to share the sheet with Mindy. Bella and I were home by 915pm.

Wednesday, Jan 7 – Work Across Town – Date Night @ Barley’s

Cold morning. Only 10 degrees at PC time. Kids and Mindy back to school. Expecting brutally cold temps during the overnight. Depending on where you got your forecast, the low was forecasted to hit as low as -11 before windchill. Ran 4 miles.

The plan was to work across town. Joined a call from home, however, first. Headed across town near 1045am. Stayed busy all afternoon choosing not to leave or take a lunch. Stuck around until 5pm or after. On the drive home, Mindy shared that school was already canceled for the following day due to extreme cold for she and the kids. We also agreed to have our date night at Barley’s. Kids were already gone.

Called my mom on the drive home. Talked for a while. She gave me an earful for not calling on Xmas. Huh-um, uh, I did call and talk to her on Xmas and reminded her as much. Also reminded her that she’s the one that declined the invitation to come stay with us and see the entire family together. Talked until I pulled in the driveway.

Inside, I had a package from David resting at my PC. I already knew what it was, a 22oz. bottle (rocket) of Blind Squirrel’s Wee Heavy brewed at their Beech Mtn brewpub.. Thanks David. Looking forward to giving it a try.  Mindy and I left for Barley’s near 610pm. Been a few weeks since we were last in – Sunday before Xmas I think.

Enjoyed a new beer – product from their new brew master – Cloistered Shadow. Had one of those and then a Double Dog Dare IPA. Enjoyed K.C. wings too. They were prepared perfectly. At the same time, Mindy had a Barley burger with greens. Hung at Barley’s until after 8pm. By the time we left the kids were home and calling wondering where in the heck we were.

Lindsey texted asking about watching the boys on Thursday since school was canceled. We hemmed and hawed about whether to have her bring them that night or on her way at 645am. Eventually settled on her bringing them in the early AM since I’d be up for work then anyway. That would prevent her from making an extra drive in the bitter cold too. Already it was approaching zero.

At home we enjoyed our toasty new gas logs while watching a little TV. The kids were very excited about the prospect of a 2nd calamity day in the same school week. Jacob said he could handle every other day school. J I’ll bet! I fell asleep from the sofa near 9pm.

Thursday, January 8th  -8 degrees with -21 windchill

Whenever it’s that cold, I find myself much looking forward to the challenge. To that end, I was up and out of bed around 625am and waiting for the boys to arrive at 645am. Once the boys showed up they predictably were eager to head right back to bed in the guest room. I opted to get a little more sleep too.

My boss, by the way, encouraged all of us to simply work from home on Thursday due to the extreme cold. Sweet! I headed out for a run around 830am. It was still reading -8 degrees according to Weather.com along with a gusting wind making it feel more like -21. I dressed wisely in layers and was comfortable throughout the entire run. The only time I felt a pinch of cold was the initial blast of cold wind in my face when running back towards the west. Otherwise, I was cozy. Not too cold and not too warm. Ran just three miles.

At home, I’d briefly forgotten that Bella had a sleepover hosting three friend from the island: Makayla, Lillian and Emily. With the boys, that meant we had a house full of kids – seven to be exact! Mindy was an excellent teacher making a griddle full of pancakes. The kids were well-behaved but got a little antsy when Mindy refused to allow them to go out and play due to the subzero temps. She also gave Bella an earful for sleeping with her bedroom window cracked. J

Mindy made sauerkraut and polish sausage for dinner, something we haven’t had for a really long time and one of my favorite dishes. The boys weren’t interested in dining with us. Lindsey picked them up around 530pm. By then it was in the positive single digits temperature-wise.

Mindy took Bella to gymnastics. I did the pick-up. I had to laugh when Bella asked if we could stop at Dairy Queen on the drive home. Not this time.

Friday, January 9 – Kidless weekend – the first since before Xmas.

Chilly morning but far warmer than it was the morning prior. Supposed to get really cold during the overnight again – predicting -4.

Rehung door by myself. Took my time. Used a slightly different technique/approach, one I picked up via YouTube.

CBC – Enjoyed a Stone Gratitude IPA, one brewed just for Columbus after they snubbed us and opted to move their east coast brewing operations to NC. Later enjoyed a Wangbar IPA from Hoof Hearted. – Yum!!!

Happy Birthday Jamie Young! 32?

Mindy enjoyed a salmon dinner. I ordered spinach artichoke dip.

Used Xmas gift money to cover our tab – most of it.

Cold drive home. Already down to 3 degrees. Home by 830pm.

Mindy worked on her jigsaw puzzle while I enjoyed a Jack & Coke by the gas log fire. Tuned into Big Bang reruns. Took just a couple sips before falling quickly asleep.

Saturday, January 10 – First MRM day

Slept in until 8am or so. Very cold, -2 officially.

Enjoyed coffee and internet until about 9am. Headed out for a run shortly thereafter. Bundled warmly and was quite cozy from the outset. I did, however, forget to add the winter shorts after my base layer. As a result my man parts got a tad colder than they otherwise would’ve.

Hoped to ski. Mindy was up about the time I returned from my run. I asked if she was still game for skiing. She said she was. We weren’t in any hurry, however. Instead, we took our dear old time. It was noon before we were out the door. It was cold, but also gorgeous. By then it was around 10 degrees under brilliant blue skies.  Arrived at MRM shortly before 1pm.

We were really sure what to expect crowd-wise. Turned out, we guessed correctly. Despite nice conditions the larger crowds chose to stay home apparently due to the ‘extreme’ cold temps. Good for us. AS a result, we got a premo parking space. Geared up and on the lift by 115pm. Nice having the new RFI technology embedded in our membership card, relieving us from having to go to the window or desk to get a daily lift ticket. Now, you proceed directly to the lift where they scan your pockets with a gizmo that displays your name and likeness.

We hooked up with the Cubra’s after a run or two. We skied for most of the afternoon with the two of them. Greeted and talked to their kids some too. The two boys, Cameron and Trevor, have grown quite a bit since we last saw them. My work peeps weren’t there, nor were the Imber’s.

The snow was nice, though perhaps a little over skied a couple of hours into our first visit. Skied until 330pm before taking a break. Inside, Bob C. found us a tall table by the bar. I was eager to checkout the many microbrews they have on tap. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one, but I sent the GM an email last season recommending that they vastly expand their beer selection from the tired Anheuser and Miller products. He listened. Not only that, but they expanded the food selection in the loft, too, adding wings, subs etc to the pizza and popcorn from the recent past. Like everything they’ve done, including moving ski-check to just beneath the loft area.

I enjoyed two IPAs – a Sierra Nevada IIIPA and then another, though can’t recall what it was. Mindy enjoyed a Bailey’s and coffee while Bob & Tina shared a Jack & Coke. Mindy went to the cafeteria looking for their yummy chicken and dumplings. Didn’t have it so she went with the next best option, chili.

Cubra’s stuck around until 5-530pm even though they stated that they planned to leave around 430pm. They had been there since 10am if I recall correctly. Mindy and I weren’t sure how long we would stay, but after a few more runs we decided to bag it too. Left by 6pm.

Agreed to order a pizza from Minelli’s and pick it up on our drive home. Waited till we got on 270 to place the order. Had to wait a few minutes once we arrived, which is good (ensures it’s hot and fresh).

Left most of our gear in the Pilot since we were 50/50 on a return trip to MRM on Sunday. My gut, however, told me that Mindy wouldn’t go. Before enjoying any pizza, I walked the pug. She wasn’t too eager to walk in the cold but by comparison, it was much warmer than the past few days. By then it was around 18 degrees.

Mindy made quick work of the large, extra crispy, double pep pizza. Just a couple slices remained when we finished. I pulled my leftover Jack & Coke from the fridge to sip. The ice had long since melted but it was still quite good. Fell asleep on the sofa by 8pm. Slept for at least an hour. When I woke, Mindy had already gone off to bed. I stayed up a while longer watching the end of the Carolina/Seattle game. Seahawks were too good for the Panthers. Started to watch SNL but it was a rerun. Opted for bed near 1140pm.

Sunday, January 11 – Back to MRM - Brief Warming Trend

I slept good and was up around 815am. It was cloudy but much, much warmer than it’s been over the last week. Already around 20 degrees and headed into the low 30s by later afternoon. The weather forecast was calling for mixed precipitation later that evening thanks to a warm, wet system from the gulf of Mexico pumping up our way into the cold.

I let Mindy sleep for quite a while before delivering the coffee she requested when I initially slipped out of bed. In no real hurry, I didn’t head out on a run near 10am. Pretty sure that Mindy was up by the time I was back from a three mile run. Because of the warmer temps, I skipped the base layer and extra fleece. I was comfy throughout.

At home I walked the pug then whipped up grits and an omelet. I made enough grits to last through the work week should I desire them. Asked Mindy about skiing. She was adamantly against it. I was torn, knowing that I could use the day to make some progress on the basement, something I haven’t done since before the Xmas holiday. But I also felt the desire to use our MRM membership having gone just once this season (the kids zero). In the end, I decided to go ski by myself.

I sent Bob I. a text just before I left. He didn’t’ respond until I was parked in the lot. J I’m guessing we got there about the same time. As I suspected, the place was packed, and as a result, it was very difficult to find a parking spot. I was fortunate and got a recently vacated spot in the 2nd row but way down by the rental equipment building. Met up with the Cubra’s and Bob I. in line at the deuce. Lines were crazy long for all the lifts, perhaps the biggest crowd I’ve seen there in a couple of years. The temps hovered around freezing – much warmer than the day before. But the groomed slopes were a bit over skied thus making it somewhat difficult to hold and edge, at least without fear. I skied cautiously all afternoon.

It must’ve been around 330pm when I headed into the lodge for a break. The lift lines were so long and I didn’t feel it worth the wait. Right away, I spotted Chris Edwards and fiancée Tammy. Bob C. was supposed to be in there too, but not immediately in my sights. Haven’t talked with Chris since the Monday after our Oregon ski trip last spring. A lot has changed for him: divorce, new job, a wedding date. Talked with the two of them for almost an hour while enjoying a .craft beer – this time a Ophelia from Breckenridge Brewing. It was very good, though later learned that it was only 5%.

I saw Bob I. only briefly in the lodge. He spent most of his time with his buddy Judd, the dentist. Headed back our for more skiing around 430pm. Got a text from Mindy checking on my status. Let her know that I was still skiing. Wasn’t sure of my departure time. Did a couple of runs before it started to spit ice and sleet. Ugh! Worse yet, the crowd was still an issue, too, especially after several ski club busses arrived. Opted to bag it.

While degearing, got a text from Bob I. sharing that he was doing the same. Listened to the analysis of the Packers/Cowboys game on the drive home. Apparently the Cowboys felt they were robbed by a bad call. Meanwhile, the Broncos/Colts were just underway. Arrived home near 540pm.
.
It wasn’t too much longer before dinner was ready – homemade cheeseburgers, salad, and macaroni. All really good stuff. Last divisional playoff game was close for most of the way. Kept expecting the Broncos to take control but they never did. Peyton Manning just didn’t seem to have it. They lost. Is it a new era – the Andrew Luck era? We’ll see.

After dinner I took a quick shower. Felt great, not only the shower but also simply getting out of the warm but clingy ski garb. Relaxed on the sofa with a fire roaring. Getting our money’s worth from the new gas logs, that’s for sure. Headed for bed even before 930pm. Mindy and the kids were hopeful that school would be canceled due to the ice and snow expected overnight.

Starting Another New Year in Ellicottville - Jan 1 - 4

First and Last ride were up the golden "50" chair - 3 in all.

Thursday, Jan 1 – Dawn of a New Year – Bluebird ski day - Bucks beat Bama

Here we are again, the start of the end, but there’s more.

Bluebird morning. Up near 8am and quickly into my running gear and off to the Inn. And just like last year, the usual 8am breakfast crowd was nonexistent. I guess lots of late night revelry. I enjoyed coffee and OJ ahead of a run. Gorgeous morning, lots of sunshine and really cold –somewhere near 10 degrees.

Ran the usual route into town and back. And like every other day this week, I took two cups of Starbucks back to the room. I woke Bella for breakfast, she wanted to go. Can’t recall if Mindy joined us or not.

Even though snow was originally forecasted, it was a bluebird ski day, and it stayed that way until almost 4pm when another system began moving in. And because it snowed during the overnight as well as the resort making snow, the runs were next to ideal. Champagne was opened though a little chunky, icy. We let the kids sleep in and meet us on their own.

We had a good time skiing. Mindy said she planned to give the kids some cash once they joined us but then turn them loose so she and I could ski at our leisure without needing to watch and wait much like we had done all week. Imagine then how surprised I was once we hooked up with the kids at Yodeler’s base when suddenly we were lunching together. Heck, they hadn’t even really skied – just left the room.  Oh well.

We had a nice time on our Yodeler lodge break. Mindy and kids went for food while I fetched drinks, me a beer and Mindy and run and Coke. I ate just a bowl of chili. It was really good, too. Our break wasn’t too long. Soon back out in the Bluebird tearing up Morning Star, Independence & Champagne, Tannenbaun was still out of commission but they did have Spruce Lake opened. We skied that once. Per the usual, very cold and windy at the top. The run was a more than little icy too. I suspect that they purposefully made wet snow to help form a solid base with hopes of fresh natural snow on top. That same thing held true park over.

Our plan all along was to stay in the room and order pizzas for dinner. We skied until 6pm or after having one heck of a time. Mardi Gras, Cindy’s and Sunrise were all in pristine condition, at least to my liking. Chomped up but loose enough to live on my edges. Felt like I was flying! Guessing it was near 530pm or just after when we called it a night.

Mindy and I headed to the hot tub while Jacob and Bella played in the room and watched the Oregon Fla. St. game. Oregon was leading when we left and still ahead when we returned. Met some nice folks from Canada. Busy hot tub, busy sauna.

Back in the room, we searched feverishly for the menu and phone number for Tim & Bonnie’s pizza, a highly regarded Ellicottville pizza shop. After a little time we found it, called them and ordered two pies for delivery. Our hopes were that it would far exceed that of the pizza from Depot.

It showed up ahead of the Buckeye game and it was incredible! Absolutely delicious. We ordered two large pies with double pepperoni. Oregon decimated the Seminoles – 59-20. The Buckeye/Bama game was next.

Jacob was frightened out of his own skin regarding the outcome, in fact so much so that he refused to watch at least directly. He put down about 6 bottled waters too. It’s well known by now that the Buckeyes won and will play Oregon on the National Championship game. Great game, and all sorts of key moments/plays.

In celebration, Jacob made a snow angel just outside our sliding door once the game was over. We stayed up until 1am winding down and watching the postgame  programming.

Friday, January 2nd – Home

Up at 8am. Snowing but much warmer. Already in the mid 20s.

In my running clothes and off to the Inn by 730am. Choked down a cup of coffee and OJ then dashed off on my run. Sidewalks where I run were scraped clear by the wonderful town of Ellicottville.

Before heading to breakfast but after taking Mindy coffee, I headed out to move and scrape the Pilot. As it was, it was covered in about 6 inches of fresh snow. I pulled it to the closest spot available for easier loading.

Mindy said she didn’t want breakfast but Bella opted to join me. Frankly, a little surprised that she got up. We weren’t too long.

We did most of our packing the night before during the Buckeye game so we didn’t have that much to do that AM. However, still and ordeal getting things consolidated and loaded with ski gear out for the day’s adventure.

Pilot loaded and on the lift at 11am. Getting out on the slopes early any day that week simply wasn’t in the cards. But aside from some missed corduroy, we got in more than enough skiing. Skied till 1245pm, before the kids desire to bolt for home took over. They simply weren’t in to it like Mindy and I were. The conditions were excellent but the lines crazy long at each and every lift. In fact, probably the busiest we’ve ever seen it. It was 115pm by the time we had our skis in the Thule, in our street clothes, and gased up in town.  By the way, gas prices were ridiculous in Ellicottville. Though $1.80 at home, they were a full dollar more there. Yikes!

Made excellent time, choosing to eat leftover Tim & Bonnie’s pizza on the drive home. We made one stop to pee, and that wasn’t until Lodi, Ohio. Our drive home was under mostly clear skies and dry pavement. Made it in 5 hours and 10 minutes. Arrive home at 625pm.

Immediately we went into unload mode though Mindy took a break for feeling nauseous over the last few miles of our drive home.  It quickly abated. Dad & Glenn showed up maybe 20-30 minutes after our arrival home. We hung out for an hour or so before dad said he’d be heading home promising to be back over near 4am to take Glenn to the airport for his 6am flight home. However, with dad suffering from vertigo symptoms, I suggested that I would get up and do the deed. He initially dismissed the offer but soon conveyed appreciation for me taking the deed. I didn’t mind at all, and certainly didn’t want dad getting up and out that early with his vertigo kicking in. Additionally, the weather forecast promised sleet/icy conditions during the overnight – hardly optimal conditions.

Enjoyed a couple pints of Bodhi thanks to the growler still in the fridge from Xmas eve. Until then it had gone untapped. It was fresh as new when I popped the top. Off to bed just after 10pm. Mindy said her goodbyes before bed since we’d be leaving for the airport while she and the kids slept.

Saturday, January 3 - Up Earlier than Dirt & Slip Slid'n Away.

4am came around fast. I set the alarm on my Galaxy III just in case I overslept, but woke just ahead of it going off. I started a pot of coffee then fooled around online before I heard Glenn stirring.  I didn’t plan to run until much later that morning. I checked the weather both online and then from the deck. Icing and slick! I backed the Pilot onto the street to make loading Glenn’s luggage a bit easier, though we still had to contend with a ridiculously slick driveway.

Left for the airport by 420am. Once out of the subdivision the roads were simply wet. We chatted about our companies tome off policies on the short drive across town. Dropped Glenn at the United Airlines drop-off near 440am. We’ll be hooking up once again in just a handful of weeks in SLC or Park City.

It rained even harder for the drive back home. The temperature was hovering around 33 degrees. Rather than risk pulling up our slick driveway, I parked the Pilot along the curb. Inside, I fooled around online however briefly then headed back to bed. Slept till 8-830am.

Finally feeling as though those pesky cold/cough symptoms were behind me. Lazy, rainy morning and day. Definitely no plans to do MRM. Sadly, their snowpack looked bleak – lots of green and just a narrow path down the main runs.

Mindy suggested we do dinner with the rest of the Thompson family at the U.A. Rusty Bucket – a goodbye dinner for Camilla, who’d be flying home to Copenhagen, Denmark Sunday evening. Ahead of that, I unloaded our skis from the Thule and then flipped and painted the last two doors for the basement. Did little else. Mindy went to pick-up Eiknarf near noon.

We headed for the Rusty Bucket on Lane Ave. near 630pm. We picked up Gloria, too. Immediately in the door I spotted Mr & Mrs Dooley at a booth just west of our long table. Went over to say hello. Say them last March when we were out to dinner for one of Mindy’s school teacher friends birthday’s. Talked with them for a while. They shared that Joey and his longtime girlfriend broke up and he was now in a Condo back on the westside. Need to look him up. Larry talked with the two of them for a while, too. He used to hang with Joey and the rest of the Holy Hill gang back in the middle school days.

Enjoyed dinner with Camilla and family. It was literally a laugh a minute. Guessing we were there until 8-830pm. Dropped Gloria at home before making our way to our own home. Felt good to crawl into my own knowing that I didn’t have to be up at any specific time.

Sunday, Jan 4 – last day of Xmas vacation

Cooler weather on the horizon but still not cold enough for snow. Day started out in the upper 50s but dropped steadily through the day until bottoming out near 30. Before leaving the Rusty Bucket the night before, we made plans to meet at Jodie and Larry’s house Sunday afternoon so we could see Camilla off as well as Jacob and I getting our haircut by niece Lindey.

Before any of that, we enjoyed a leisurely morning, not getting out of bed for good until almost 10am. Actually, though, I was up around 830am but got back into bed for a spell after delivering Mindy’s morning coffee near 9am. Once up for good, I headed out to run my three miles.

The big local news story was the possibility of a significant snow storm striking Monday evening into Tuesday morning. At the time they were predicting as much as 6” of snow with brutally cold temps right behind – subzero temps! The kids and Mindy were holding out hope for a snow day. Jacob wanted school to be canceled for his first day back after Xmas break. That, I suggested, wasn’t in the cards.

Headed over to Jodie & Larry’s near 1pm. It was a smaller gathering than dinner the night before, but all of their children were there along with their significant others. Joe & Camilla got there shortly after us. Lindey cut our hair in the basement. Had me bring my cordless trimmers. Guessing that we were there for almost 2 hours. They’d be leaving for the airport soon after we left. By the way, while running out to the Pilot to fetch the hair clippers, I saw Dan & Mary Elswick drive bye. Didn’t get an opportunity to chat but we did acknowledge one another.

Mindy invited dad over for dinner – homemade chicken and noodles At home we watched NFL playoffs. At some point I hung the two most recently painted doors back in their respective jams. Took some doing ( a lot of swearing) to get the bathroom door back into the hinges. Once done, I noticed that the door was rubbing ever so slightly in the upper left corner non hinge side. Dang it! I’ve adjusted it pre-paint and now after paint several times only to have it rub again. I was discouraged, and knew then that I needed to do something different or risk dealing with the same problems time and time again. I monkeyed with the jam until it was time for dinner. At the same time, I made the smart decision to install all of the doorknobs before trimming out any of the four doors just in case I need to redo any of the others. However, I wouldn’t be getting to that for a couple of days. I feel like we’ve been stuck in the same place with the basement since well before Xmas. Of course a lot of that has to do with the holidays and vacation, but still.

Dinner was terrific. The chicken & noodles really hit the spot. Dad thanked me again for getting Glenn to the airport. No worries! By days end, Mindy had almost all of Xmas down and put away. Was nice to have our house back to normal. The family room looks so spacious without the tree and all the other Xmas stuff. I could tell that Mindy was a bit stressed from it all. It didn’t help that Jacob procrastinated on some homework he was to complete over break. Waited until Sunday night to get on it and then tried making it our issue. J

Everybody in bed by 10pm.
