Ten Years After ...

A few images from my first post, Monday, August 8, 2005 documenting a weekend family camping trip

I began this blog on August 8th, 2005 determined to document my life's journey on a daily basis no matter how boring or how tedious it might become. The idea fascinated me. After all, I figured, how cool will it be for my kids, grandkids, & great grandkids to have a first person peak into my daily life many years removed from its initial writing. Of course, I included photos most days too.  Not only would it serve as a rudimentary memoir, it would also provide a means for those far and near, assuming they wanted, to stay in touch with my day to day affairs.

The idea, however, of keeping a daily blog wasn't new. Nope! Instead, I pretty much stole or borrowed it from my older brother Glenn who'd been "journaling" about his daily routine for many years prior.

For me, daily blogging became a cathartic exercise and also provided a little comedy, as well as way to stay connected to the immediate past. Many times I've used it as a point of reference to validate an event, a date, weather, etc. Very handy! Another unexpected benefit was the mental aspect - the ability to recall each day's events with great detail, and sometimes four or five days removed. The secret was often recalling one single nugget of truth then the rest would begin to flow like a faucet.  Yikes! Of course some days my writing was better than others and with far greater detail. I guess it just depended on my mood at the time of writing.

One glitch, which I hadn't counted on was blogspot, the blog hosting service of choice, changing formatting periodically, which over the years altered or removed the formatting from countless entries leaving me with what now look like long run-on paragraphs. Geesh! I'd gone to great pains to keep my paragraphs short so not to bore a reader.

And sandwiched somewhere in the middle for a period of two or three years, I would painstakingly edit each post  before publishing, but that became too cumbersome so I eventually decided to write and publish without benefit of a proofread or edit, which all but guaranteed grammatical errors. Meh!

It must've been about two years ago when writing my daily post began to feel more like work than pleasure. Simply put, it felt more like a job -something I had to do - rather something I wanted to do. However, despite the angst, I kept at it, making sure to fill all the gaps the best I could up through mid-August 2015, though the last several months were written and posted in large chunks rather than daily morsels.

So, today I am officially walking away from my daily blogging. It's time for something new. But just what that will be, who knows? We'll just have to see. Perhaps I will spend a little more time reading or with another passion of mine, photography.

And while one streak officially ends, another continues. I am thrilled to report that my running streak is still going strong, having just recently blown by 18.5 years of running every single day. See you on the running trail!

August Steamy & Hot

Saturday, August 1 – Pins & Needles

Another warm and gorgeous sunny day. Didn’t head out for a run until 930am or so.  Ran three miles.  It was a kidless weekend. Sadly, I couldn’t relax too much with a looming deployment to Texas hanging over my head. I wouldn’t know for sure until the wee hours of Sunday morning. As it was, I treated as if it was a foregone conclusion that I was going.

Our plans for the day included Josh & Rachel’s house warming party up in Dublin. It was an open house beginning at 3pm and going until 7pm. We planned to stay for an hour or two. During the late morning and early afternoon, I finished packing for Texas double checking my list in hopes of not forgetting anything essential. Of course, with an open ended length of stay, it was difficult if not impossible to pack everything I might need. I resigned myself to packing relatively light – almost like a week’s vacation.

Mindy asked me to spackle a crack and a few holes in the master bedroom wall before my potential departure so she could move forward with the bedroom redo. While I had the ladder  and spackling out, I took care of a couple drywall nail-pops on the vaulted ceiling that have literally been there for the last 10-15 years.

We readied for an afternoon away and left for Josh & Rachel’s near 3pm. Easy drive around 270 and north on Sawmill for a few miles. Nice place. Neat and tidy, just as we expected. They don’t have any children … yet, though Rachel’s pregnant with their first.

Having partied with Josh & Rachel numerous times past, there were lots of familiar faces. Lot of good eats too. Rachel (Ben’s sister) is one heck of a cook. Matter of fact, it runs in their family.

Eventually kicked back on their backyard shaded patio. Very nice. A little drama ensued when neighbor Chrissy confiscated her step-daughter’s iPhone for texting drama. Caused quite the stir, at least for a little while. I went out to talk Chrissy off the ledge when she briefly retreated to Kenny’s Jeep. We talked for maybe 15 minutes. Nobody said being a step-parent would be easy.

I drank only ice water for not knowing for certain how my Sunday would unfold. We left for home around 5pm. Mindy asked that we stop at Pier 1 on Sawmill Rd. She’s looking for some unique, old-fashioned cabinets for our basement. We didn’t find anything we liked at Pier 1. I suggested we stop at World Market at Tuttle mall next. They didn’t have anything that fit the bill either.

After 6pm by the time we arrived at home. Thinking it was near 730pm when I chose to do dinner at Barley’s. Since I was potentially leaving town for an undetermined amount of time, Mindy left it entirely up to me. And of all the places we like to frequent, it’s usually Barley’s I still crave most when away.

Next to no one there when we showed up. Jersey was working the bar. Started with a ZIPA then ordered a Smokehouse Reuben – yum. Haven’t enjoyed one of those for a really long time. Jersey pointed out that their annual Hop-IPA-looza was coming up the following Thursday. Dang it! Sadly, there was a strong chance I’d miss it.

Enjoyed another IPA but this time a Warped Wing Space Food. Very good! Mindy ordered one too. We were about to leave when our peeps John & Carolyn stopped in. I was in the restroom when they showed up and could hear Mindy hooting and hollering when they surprised her. We ended up sticking around for another beer.

Had to be near 1030-11pm when we finally headed home.

Sunday, August 2 – No go!

Four years ago, I forced myself to wake near 3am just to check on my deployment status. This year, however, I decided to wait and wake naturally. I woke around 640am and headed downstairs to learn my fate. Before checking, I made a cup of coffee and settled into my office chair. I took a deep breath and popped open my email. No go! Wahoo!

I sense of calm and relief befell me. I opted to enjoy my first cup of coffee before heading up to notify Mindy. Despite the coffee, I was sleepy again so after sharing the good news with Mindy I briefly tried going back to sleep. Might’ve slept lightly for another 1—15 minutes but that’s it. Back downstairs to enjoy the sunny morning.

Headed out on the run around 9am. Because of the situation, I had absolutely nothing on the agenda. my day was a blank slate. Mindy was up around 10am. We spent a little time on the deck eventually agreeing to spend the day kayaking Darby Creek at the Darby Battelle Park put-in. Mindy wasn’t as eager as me, but seemed to warm to the idea once we continued with our ready.

I think it was near noon when we arrived at the D.B. put-in. Not knowing the current conditions, we opted to leave the kayaks in the Pilot and walked down to the water’s edge first. Apparently Darby Creek was a flood stage while we were away on vacation. Today, however, the water level looked normal and the flow leisurely.

Soon we were paddling, and at first a little ways up stream. I left it up to Mindy which direction we would go. She suggested we paddle south since we’ve spent so much time hiking along the creek to the north many times past. That also meant we’d be paddling with the flow, which made for a very leisure ride.

Couldn’t really ask for a better day. Nothing but blue skies, warm temps and a slight breeze. I loved it! We kayaked for perhaps a mile or two south taking on three sets of shallows and mini-rapids. We might’ve had to get out once to pull the kayak a few feet to deep waters, but that’s it.

After the third shallow rapids, Mindy suggested we not go much further for having to paddle upstream the entire way back. I could have gone all day but agreed. We turned for our return. Paddling against the usual current was no big deal, especially once some momentum was gained. The shallow rapids presented a bit of a challenge. At each one Mindy simply got out to pull her kayak through em. I opted for the challenge. I made it through one of the three without vacation the kayak. Once you go sideways, I learned, you’re done!  And rowing through the rapids was an incredible workout.

The last shallow wasn’t really navigable, especially since we had to take the shallowest fork in the creek to avoid a large faming of swimmers. Most of happened upon a dozen or so other kayakers out that afternoon too. All totaled, it was about a two-hour adventure and one well worth the effort.

Arrived home near 4pm. Mindy helped me stow the kayaks in the shed before any relaxing.

Monday, August 3

It was nice to have a normal Monday work morning. I was up around 630am to exercise, meditate, stretch and run. Had I gone to Texas, my tentative plan was to run in the evenings since I was expected to be in the office by 6am. Ugh! To maintain my current rhythm and routine meant I would’ve needed to wake at 3am. No way!

Enjoyed everything about my morning prep. As usual, I ran 4 miles. Worked from home for the first couple hours. Headed into the office near 10am. All things considered, a relatively easy work day.

Tuesday, August 4

Ran 4 miles. Worked across town for most of the day. Stopped at Lowes before jumping on the freeway to buy window film for the master bedroom half-moon window. Stopped in Target, too, which is right next door where I bought a permanent filter for our Kuerig 2.0.

Mindy was busy painting the master bedroom. Made decent progress – first coat applied to main bedroom area.

Once she finished for the day, she and the kids suggested we have dinner out at Barley’s. Had just one beer with dinner, which was a plate of wings for me. Stopped by dad’s to water and walk Archie on the way home.

Wednesday, August 5

Ran 4 miles. Still a painful right hamstring but slowly but surely getting better. Worked across town. At lunch time I made a Home Depot run. Above all, I finally got around to returning about $20 worth of plumbing parts I bought but didn’t need or use in the basement. No questions asked. Pretty sure these were all April purchases. Yikes! Didn’t head for home until almost 5pm.

Despite the late hour, I opted to give 670W a try despite knowing that a 670/70W back-up was inevitable. Arrived home just after the kids left with Jimaken. Mindy was busy painting our bedroom. Around 6pm she came downstairs insisting we head out somewhere for dinner. Given that we were out to dinner the evening before, and really no wanting to eat out or drink alcohol, I requested we not go anywhere. She wasn’t too thrilled.

Thursday, August 6

Ran 4 miles. Hamstring still tight. Worked from the Hilliard office.  Mindy still painting the master bedroom. Mindy enlisted Bella’s help and she seemed to be doing a good job. Working in the water closet. Nothing left but a clean-up coat.

Friday, August 7

Ran 3 miles. Worked from home. Took lunch break around noon and drove over to Dad’s house where I walked Archie and ripped a small channel in a piece of door trim to accept the insulation strip. The piece will replace a rotted section on our side entry door.

Stayed busy until almost 515pm. As usual, the late afternoon was the busiest part of my day. Around 530pm, while Mindy ran out to pick-up more paint and also to drop the kids at the St Brenndan’s festival, I cut the lawn. Finished the entire job in less than an hour. With the exceptionally dry weather over the past week, I didn’t have to edge. I did blow though.

With the kids at the festival, Mindy and I planned to go out for a while, though we’d have to pick up Bella and her friend around 930pm. I suggested we try Zauber Brewing again. Haven’t been there since late June 2014 with Glenn. Neither one of us was too thrilled with it back then but hearing nothing but good things about it lately. They were quick to open perhaps even before they should’ve last year. We also wanted to stop in at Sideswipe if time permitted.

We left the house near 7pm, best guess. Enjoyed two Belgian IPAs – Mindy only one. Also enjoyed some grub from the Food Truck. I had two chicken tacos while Mindy had the meatloaf sandwich. Both very good. The bartender, Oliver, bought Mindy and I a shot of our choice. I went with Jack while Mindy went with Capt’n Morgan’s.

Just before we left, we spotted Sideswipe pal, Paul at the other end of the bar. Talked with him for a few. Surprisingly, he wasn’t going to make it to Sideswipe that night. He lives in Valleyview, which is right around the corner.

We both enjoyed Zauber. Glad we decided to give it another try. Onto St. Brenndan’s to pick-up Bella. Took a few minutes for Bella and her friend to come to the car. Mindy had been texting with her for the past few minutes. We dropped her friend at home, which wasn’t too far away at all. Near my office, in fact. Arrived home around 10pm. Mindy headed almost directly to bed while I cracked open another beer, this time a Big Vic – a double IPA from Elevator. Not very good. After about half, I dumped it and headed for bed.

Jacob was still at the festival but expected home around 1130pm. I heard him come in just about the time he was expected home.

Saturday, August 8 – Syzygy & Sideswipe

It’s that that time of year, the grand reopening of Aspen Ski & board and their annual summer sale. We planned on heading up to the Polaris store with Bella. Jacob couldn’t go due to a soccer game. After a run and a little breakfast, me, Mindy and Bella headed north.

The crowd was large. Not a lot of wiggle room. While Mindy and Bella looked for a pair of ski pants, I checked out the deals on last years (14/15) skis. More specifically, I was eager to see if they had Amphibio xti82’s in a 168cm. They didn’t. The Elan guy saw me looking and urged me to check out the new 15/16 model inside. I did.

Ran into Scott, one of the managers who I deal with most often. So crowded and busy. No time to talk. Checked out the new Amphibios. Supposedly better technology. This year’s model 2mm wider under foot. In the end, we just looked. Bella, meanwhile, found a great deal on a pair of 5K ski pants.

Sometime midafternoon we received word that grandpa Al, Kelly’s father, passed away quietly at home. I was saddened by the news and offered to help in any way possible. I sent Kelly a text expressing my condolences. I’d talked with Ashley a day or two prior. According to her, it was immenent.

Installed the window tinting on the master bedroom half moon window. Not nearly as easy as the instructions implied, but the fact that it’s a half moon shaped, I think, was the biggest challenge. Made a couple mistakes but in the end it looks OK.

The opportunity to visit Barley’s presented itself. Mindy and I headed there around 8pm. Opted for Seventh Son’s new double IPA – Syzygy. Wow! All the sudden Bodhi has some serious competition. Not only is the Syzygy very drinkable, but it’s also stronger, and by quite a bit. In fact, it’s a whopping 10.9%. I enjoyed a couple of them along with a Cuban with bacon. Yum!

Sunday,  August 9

After some coffee, a banana, and a run, we once again readied for a drive up to ASBCO. This time, however, Jacob was with us. He wants new ski pants too – waterproof this goa round. The last pair we bought him were barely water resistant.

Crowded, but nearly as much as Saturday, which made shopping a bit easier. Ran into manager Scott again. He had time to chat. I soon asked if he wanted to sell Mindy and I new skis. Heck yeah!
I decided to buy the 15/16 Amphibio 84xti. Mindy wanted the Elan Delights – lightest, nimblest new ski on the market. We demo’d both last March and both of us loved what we skied. The Amphibio comes flat or with an integrated binding. I opted for the flat with the Attack bindings. By most accounts, the flat supposedly gives one more control.

Jacob and I found new ski pants, too. I found a pair of bright lime green Descente 10K ski pants that fit perfectly and 50% off list. Sweet! Jacob found some gray 20K ski pants, which should be perfect for him.
Scott took care of getting our entire purchase together. I agreed to buy Mindy’s new skis too. Happy birthday, dear! While I took care of all that, she and headed out to the MRM tent to purchase our family membership. We talked about not buying the kids a season pass this year since they didn’t go nearly as much last winter, but in the end we renewed theirs too.

Talked with GM Greg’s wife, who was the one processing the new memberships. Shared that she and Greg are moving on. He was promoted to Peak Resorts premier resort in Vermont – Mt. Snow. That’s where they’re from anyway, so it’ll be a homecoming of sorts. In turn, there will be a new GM in charge at MRM this year.

Now after 12noon, all of us were really hungry. I suggested gyros at Kabob’s and everyone agreed. I’d been craving one of their gyros for a long while. Haven’t been there since David visited first week of June.

Me, Mindy and Jacob each ordered a gyro combo. In fact, Jacob ended up eating two gyros. Their gyros might be the best in the entire world. Bella decided to not eating anything. Man, was it delicious!

Sunday evening, we headed over to dad’s to walk Archie. We weren’t there too long, maybe 30 minutes.

Sunday evening was the Hall of Fame football game featuring the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers. I was much looking forward to the game despite a meaningless outcome. The Vikings won easily. Defense looked awesome.

Monday, August 10

After a 4 mile run, I headed into the Hilliard office. Scattered but severe thunderstorms rolled into the central Ohio area midafternoon. Lots of lightning and heavy rain, though very brief.

Daughter Ashley called and asked if I would serve as a pallbearer for grandpa. I was honored to do so. I let my boss know that I’d be taking Thursday as a bereavement day.

Tuesday, August 11

The stormy weather from the overnight moved out of the area leaving in its wake slightly cooler temps and lots of sunshine. Ran 4 miles. Worked across town.

That afternoon, Mindy took a large pan of rigatoni and another pan of salad to Rosemary’s to help feed the extended family expected in town for Al’s funeral. We got the recipe from neighbor Teri, who did the same for us back in June for dad.

Wednesday, August 12

Gorgeous sunny day.  Ran 4 miles then headed across town. Headed home a little early to finish my work day so I could get ready for Al’s calling hours. It was a Jimaken night for the kids. He picked the kids up around 5pm. Mindy and I left for Scheodinger’s in Grove City around 515pm.

Arrived before anyone else. Had a few minutes to see Al with just Mindy and I there. Looked really good. Lots of beautiful flowers, including those from us. Displayed proudly at his side was a letter from the OSU department of athletics. How thoughtful.

Soon Kelly’s extended family showed up. Beyond Rosemary, I hadn’t seen most of her aunts and uncles for almost 20 years. Many of the Connecticut contingent came in town. Good to see everyone. Sad it was for such an event. Suppose that’s how it often goes.

We stayed at the funeral home until 730pm or so. After leaving, we drove a couple block south and parked along Broadway (rt. 62) right across from Plank’s Grove City and walked another block to Hop Yard 62. A guy I work with owns the place. Just so happened, he was there. Said hello and introduced Mindy. We enjoyed a couple big IPAs – 10% from Stone. Very good! Several folks were in from the Grove City running club after a run, or course. And it just so happened that Mindy recognized one of them as the mother of a former student. We talked with her at length. She’s actually been to our house. She also knows some of our neighbors.

We left the Hop Yard happy but hungry agreeing to make a pits stop at Kabob’s on West Broad near the casino. It was date night but the kids were staying the night with Jimaken. I kept forgetting that. And because we didn’t need to be home at any particular time, we opted to eat-in. We weren’t disappointed either. Easily the best gyros ever! The Greek salads were good too, but the gyro’s, out of this world!

Thursday, August 13 – Goodbye to Al

Ashley and family asked that I be at the funeral home by 915am to serve as a pall bearer. To that end, I wanted to be there by 9am allowing a little time for the unexpected. With that in mind, I was up by 630am to allow myself plenty of time to exercise, meditate, stretch and run.  Mindy had to attend school retreat, the official kick-off to the new school year. She planned to meet me at the church (OLPH) during her lunch hour.

The early AM went as planned. Left the house for the funeral home at 840am. Made great time arriving just ahead of 9am. First one there. I headed inside and had my last look and chat with Al all by myself. Rosemary and one of her sibs actually pulled up as I was walking in. They must’ve waited outside for a few minutes to greet others.

I wasn’t quite sure of the plan but did know they’d be taking Al to OLPH for the actual funeral. Turns out, there was a brief and semi-informal ceremony at the funeral home first. Me, Joey, Steven, along with three of Kelly’s older uncles served as the pall bearers. They made sure that us younger guys were on the end.

I had grandson Landon step up and help me as we placed Al into the hearse. He did a good job. The ride to OLPH was quick. It’s less than a mile up the road. We did the pall bearer duties once more, getting Al into the church sanctuary. I opted to sit in the 2nd row with Ashley and family. I wanted to video Ashley delivering her tribute to grandpa. There ceremony was very nice. As Rosemary said more than once, Al would’ve loved it. I am sure he DID love it. He was there. I could feel him.

As nervous as she was, Ashley delivered a beautiful tribute to Al (Grandfather). I decided to take part in the holy communion, though like many others, opted out of the wine. Landon rode with me to the cemetery – St. Joseph’s which is a few miles south of Scioto Downs on rt. 23. Al’s resting place is way in the back under a big shady tree and as it turns out, directly across from Guy Ferelli, the founder of Minelli’s Pizza. I took a photo of his grave. Al received a military graveside service after serving in the Air Force. Very touching as they formally removed the flag from the casket, folded it, then handed it to Rosemary.

There was a wake immediately after the cemetery service back at OLPH. Mindy met me in the parking lot. We headed in and conversed with Kelly’s extended family as well as Shelly and Joey and kids. Enjoyed a little food too, but I was careful not to over eat. Very much enjoy Kelly’s extended family.

Mindy needed to get back to her school retreat. I left about the same time as Mindy, choosing to make a rather quiet exit.

I had the house all to myself for most of the afternoon, or until Mindy and the kids got home. Can’t recall what time that actually was.

Friday, August 14 – Ben & Ryan dinner

Absolutely gorgeous weather on Friday. Expected a high of 82 with oodles of sunshine. Back to work after a bereavement day.

Stayed very busy during the work day. During lunch, I spent about 15 minutes wrecking out the rotted wood on the garage side entry door jam and exterior trim. I made the same repair to the deck entry door some years back so I knew exactly what to do. I cut the jam off about 18” above the sill. I spent another 5 minutes fabricating the replacement jam piece, which entailed ripping a ¼’ wide – 1/2” deep grove in the door stop to allow for the insulation. I then glued and nailed that with brads to the new piece of jam. I still needed to cut the new piece to fit snuggly into the area cut away, but planned to do that over the weekend. I was just happy to get started on the repair after ignoring it for the past two years.

Work kept me busy through 445pm. Shortly after that, I headed out to mow the lawn. Took about an hour and fifteen minutes soup to nuts. The kids left with Jimaken in there somewhere. Mindy and I had plans to have dinner with friends Ben & Ryan. We asked what we needed to bring. Even though they said nothing, I insisted on taking something. Figured we’d stop at Giant Eagle and pick-up a dessert and also make a stop at 7th Son brewing to fill a growler or two with Syzygy.

We didn’t leave the house until 615pm. Headed to 7th Son. I wasn’t sure they would sell growlers of Syzygy but they did. Agreed to do it but shared they’re no longer supposed to given that it’s available in rockets. We each sipped one on site too from a comfy leather sofa. While there, we chatted with a neighbor whom we see at other brew pubs on occasion.

We stopped at Giant Eagle Market District at Grandview Yard where we picked up a cheesecake and hummus for Ben & Ryan’s, too. We were gonna get some stuff for brother Bob’s Saturday cookout but couldn’t agree on what to get from there. On our way out we decided to make a Sam’s Club stop on Saturday to get brownies and all the fixins for green bean casserole.

Arrived at Ben & Ryan’s around 715pm. Ben was off to the drive-thru to get some beer. We enjoyed Ryan’s company until he returned while also sipping some fresh Syzygy – yum!!

Last of Vacation @ Home - Ending July

Tuesday, July 21 – Return to Routine

Nice to wake at home, enjoy coffee from the Kuerig, and take a leisurely 4 mile run through the subdivision. Mid-morning we got a call from Lindsey asking if we could pick-up Rocky from day cap (Hilltop YMCA). Yes.

I drove the BM’er to pick him up. During my drive there, I listened to NPR radio. The program was the formal launch of  Governor Kasich’s presidential campaign. I called Mindy asking that she DVR it. Despite anyone’s feelings or perceptions, I wanted to hear what he had to say for myself.

Rocky was elated to not only be coming to our house but also to be riding in the convertible. We had a mostly leisurely day around the yard and house. Mindy headed off to drop Jacob at soccer practice near 130pm. Bella, meanwhile, left to go visit her boyfriend. His mom picked Bella up. I agreed to fetch her at their house before 4pm.  While they were away, Rocky and I played ball. While passing the football, I tried to run hard after an errant throw. Doing so wasn’t a good idea as I tweaked my right hamstring. Ouch! It hurt so bad that I couldn’t walk it off. From that point forward, I was walking with a painful and noticeable limp.

Rocky and I headed to Whole Foods where I bought some Patagonian Tooth fish (AKA Chilean sea bass) as well as some of that yummy peach mango salsa. Left to fetch Bella at 345pm after struggling to find Eli’s address. Had to text Kayla who sent him a text to get it.

Mindy grilled the fish and steamed some rice. Delicious! The best Chilean sea bass in a long time. Mindy and I enjoyed a beer from the deck that evening.

Wednesday, July 22 – Tommy at 54 @ Wolf’s Ridge

Another hot sunny day at the house. Ran just three miles with an awfully painful hamstring. In fact, it hurt some much at the outset that I wasn’t sure that I would be able to finish but I did. Tommy and I agreed to meet at dad’s place near 11am to mow the lawn as a team while Mindy and the kids headed to lunch with mawmaw and nephew Joe.

I took my trimmer and blower as well as 5 gallons of gas. Arrived before Tommy. Got started with the push mowing ahead of his arrival. Never used dad’s old tractor.

Cut about half the front before Tommy arrived. Once he got the tractor going, he gave me a quick overview and let me take it while he finished push mowing. After about 60 minute, the tractor was over heating (it’s been doing that all summer). We left it sit awhile and then added more coolant mix. Probably just another 25-30 minutes of mowing to finish the job.

Couldn’t get it to start again. Mindy, mawmaw, and the kids stopped by dad’s after lunch. Headed home a short time later. We confirmed plans to take Tommy to dinner later that evening for his 54th birthday. The plan was to visit Wolf’s Ridge.

I fooled around with Bella’s iPhone, the same one that’s been out of commission since mid-June. Been out of service for six weeks. But all the sudden it started working after a hard reset, though it had done the same thing shortly after it failed but completely dead for the last 4 weeks. I was skeptical but also excited that it was working again. I planned to put it through its paces, including several power off’s and  power on’s. That’s when it would usually fail.

That afternoon, I washed my Accord, giving it a much needed bath. After some lunch and a brief nap, I headed back over to dad’s hoping to get the tractor running and subsequently to finish the lawn. Started right up, so I was able to finish the lawn. By the time I arrived back at the house, Tommy was there. After a shower, we left for Wolf’s Ridge.

We enjoyed a pint from the tap room before making our way to the restaurant. We opted for bar seating there too, and that’s where we enjoyed a very nice dinner. All three of us went with the restaurant week special, which was a pork shank, salad, and dessert. Very well-prepared and very delicious! I enjoyed a high octane IPA too.  Tommy’s dinner was on us. Happy birthday, Tom!

Thursday, July 23 – Rocky’s 12th b-day

Another hot sunny day at home. Ran 3 miles with a still painful hamstring, but it was somewhat better than Wednesday. That was certainly an encouraging sign.

The day’s plan was to celebrate Rocky’s b-day and have he, Landon and Olivia overnight. They wouldn’t be there until after Lindsey got off work. Ahead of that, I had the kids help me wash and detail Mindy’s Pilot. Jacob helped wash the outside. Bella vacuumed the inside and did a very good job. She’s a good cleaner when focused.

Can’t remember what else we did during the day. Bella’s phone was still working after putting it through all sorts of tests that prior would produce a fail. She was now aware that I had it working but suggested I needed another day to continue testing before possibly giving it back.

Mindy baked brownies for Rocky’s b-day celebration and we planned on ordering pizzas too. They got there around 5pm. We ordered pizzas and wings from Minelli’s. Hadn’t had a Minelli’s pizza in quite a while. Man, was it delicious!

Rocky was very excited with his b-day gift - $100 cash! After celebrating, Mindy and I sat n the deck while the kids all played. It wasn’t too long after we took a seat out back that we heard several cars honking out front. After a couple minutes Mindy went to scope it out. She returned with both wee ones on tow (Livy and Landon). And Olivia was in tears. Apparently she and Landon were trying to get passing cars to honk their horns and eventually decided that it was a good idea to sit in the middle of the street to shock oncoming cars! Holy cow!!!!!

I was scared and angry and let Livy know how disappointed I was. I called Ashley to tell her. That rattled me to my core because I know how fast and how most drivers in our subdivision drive without paying attention. She could have been killed! Still rattles me to think about it. Ashley initially insisted on coming to get her, but I talked her out of it.  I made it clear in no uncertain terms that that could never happen again. Equally, we banned the two eight year olds from playing out front without one of us (me or Mindy) out there too.

We stayed up not much later than 10pm.

Friday, July 24

Another hot sunny day in CMH. Generally, Friday’s represent the beginning of the weekend and are therefore a very happy day, but with the weekend upon us, I could feel my 17 day vacation coming to an end. Honestly, I was dreading the thought of returning to work. I ran three miles, but that’s normal for most Friday’s. My hamstring was feeling a little better but still an issue. From past experience, I know it’s going to ache for quite a while.

The day’s agenda included me mowing the lawn again. It also included all of us going to watch Jacob’s H.S. soccer team scrimmage in Dublin. He had two games, one at 3pm and the other at 6pm. The plan was for me and Bella to meet Mindy there for the evening game, after all the g-kids were gone. Mindy left with Jacob around 130pm while I was busy with the lawn.

All the gkids and daughters were going camping at Alum Creek. As you might guess, they were much looking forward to it. Steven came to pick-up Olivia around 1pm. I promised Bella she could have a friend spend the night. She opted to invite Elaina who Mindy and I really enjoy. Very good kid.
We gave Bella her phone that day, too. She was very excited.

Bella and I left for the soccer match shortly after Lindsey picked up the boys around 5pm. The soccer field was very hot and sunny. We watched about ¾’s of the match before taking off to pick-up Elaina, who lives in Hilliard very near the H.S. We planned to meet Mindy & Jacob at the Rusty Bucket for dinner soon after.

Our timing really couldn’t have been better. We arrived at the Rusty Bucket just a minute or two after Mindy. Joe greeted us and seated us with Ryan as our server. I ordered a White Rajah. Yum! Went with the chicken parm for my dinner entrée’ and enjoyed a 2nd White Rajah, too. Delicious!

By the time we finished dinner and arrived home, it was well after 9pm and dark. I headed next door after hearing Kenny and Trena chatting from her deck. I hung out with the two of them for a couple hours. Went home briefly in an attempt to get Mindy to join us but she was already in bed and didn’t want to play.

While hanging out, Trena treated us to two different shots – one moonshine (lemon peel infused Everclear), the other fireball. Ugh! Combine that with two or three beers, I had all the makings of a bad Saturday morning. J It was fun Friday night though. The three of us shot pool in Trena’s recently finished basement. Very nicely done, I might add, save for the Steelers décor’.

It was after 1am when I headed for home and bed.

Saturday, July 25 - This time it's my Personal Republic

Who coulda predicted this? I woke around 8am feelin' OK, but definitely not a 100%. A little coffee, an English muffin, and some internet, figured I'd be OK. Around 915am I headed off on a routine 3 mile run. I was fine through my run, but afterwards I wasn't feelin' so hot. To make matters a little worse, Mindy was shared that she was annoyed with me for ignoring her the evening prior. I wanted nothing more than to lie around and heal. :)

Our plans for the day included two events. First, we had the neighbors son, Jake's 17th b-day yard party, and then the St Margaret's festival - the Catholic church next to dad's place. There we planned ot meet Darwin to see his son, Jordan's band play. After a couple brief naps I felt marginally better, and from that point forward it was simply a matter of feelin' sluggish and tired. The only thing that would cure it was a good night's sleep.

We headed to the neighbors around 3 or 4pm. Enjoyed seeing folks we haven't seen in many months as well as some of the yummy food. I tried to eat healthfully, chomping on salad and veggies and washing all down with water.

Headed for the festival near 530pm.I was wrong about the start time. It was 6pm. Very hot and sunny, by the way. We parked at dad's and happened upon brother Bob and Tommy. Bob asked me to sign some papers relative to dad's estate. We chatted for a while catching up on all the particulars. We wisely brought a cooler of our own craft beers to enjoy in lieu of paying $5-6 each at the festival. Of course I brought some Solo cups too.

Entered the festival grounds from dad's deep backyard. There wasn't a cover charge but walking in with carry-in beer wasn't allowed. We quickly hooked up with Darwin and his brother-in-law, Brian who were sitting at a table a few deep from the stage listening to Jordan's band, Personal Republic. We sat with them for a bit but the hot sun was too much. We begged off seeking cover and shade, though still within close proximity of the stage.

Rather than head back to the car for another "free' beer, we caved and bought beer tickets. At least this year they had a couple craft beers. Seems everybody's come of age relative to beer selection. Thirsty Dog IPA. Decent!

We hung out for perhaps another hour, now sitting with Connie - Darwin's wife. She invited us to go to the Outer Banks with their family in two short weeks. Appreciated the invite but gracefully declined. There was a strong chance that I'd be working in Texas covering a strike. Found our kids who were milling about the festival on their own. Jacob had a girl friend with him - Alex. He won two cakes via the cakewalk/spin. thingy. Bella and her friends opted to stay. Jacob and Alex headed home with us. Neighbor Mike agreed to go back later to fetch the girls.

Once home, we fairly quickly rejoined the neighbors yard party. Enjoyed another beer but soon called it quits for not having the will or desire to party too late for a second night in a row. Headed home around 930pm. At the time, Bella and her friends were still at the festival.  Alex's parents came to get her around 11pm. Mike and Kenny went after the girls about the time that Mindy and I headed home.

Sunday, July 26 - Lat vacation day :(

Big surprise, I woke Sunday feeling considerably better than I did the morning before. Usual run and fun. The day's plans included attending good friend Rene's wedding. Wedding slated for 3-4pm at the Greek Orthodox Church downtown. Rene - she's as Greek as they come. :)

Leading up to our ready, I lounged and tinkered around the house. Opted to wear my newish suit to the wedding. Overcast skies dominated the afternoon. Still quite stick. If you've ever been to a Greek Orthodox wedding, you know that they're generally much different than what we've come to expect. The two priest pretty much sang the wedding, and the couple - Vaughn and Rene spoke no words. And the ceremony itself drug on for a painful 40 minutes, though I must admit that it was mildly entertaining and the venue extraordinarily ornate. We love Rene so we endure!

The reception was on prem, which is the way to do it. Good food, good fun. We were seated at a table with like families: teacher peers of Mindy and Rene, along with their hubbies and children. We had a nice time. The food was good. I opted to pass on the open bar. Instead, drinking only water. For me, it was time to escape the drinking every night and get back on the fine horse that had gotten me to my summer vacation in the first place. :)

Enjoyed most of the formal wedding stuff, like the speeches, toasts, and dancing. We left for home sometime near 8pm. Rene looked as happy as I've ever seen her.

Just as I worried I might, sleep was difficult, I tossed and turned until I eventually got up and headed back downstairs. I finally fell asleep somewhere close to 1230am.

Monday, July 27 - Return to Work

I wisely logged onto my laptop Sunday evening before going to bed, not only to get a feel for what the work week might bring but also to make sure all of my passwords worked and then to clean-up email. That helped considerably.

As usual, I did a 4 mile run in the subdivision around 730am. Felt good getting back on that horse. Hamstring still sore but tolerable. Headed into the office arriving near 930am. Stuck around until almost 5pm. Worked from home that evening.

Tuesday, July 28 Work Cleveland Brandi

Ran 4 miles from home. Worked across town at my customer's campus. Shortly after I arrived I learned that our 1pm meeting would be canceled. I stuck around until almost 2pm anyway.

Headed for home. Mindy and I left for Cleveland shortly thereafter. Lindey was coming over late that afternoon to spend the night with the kids. We left them pizza money and made sure the rules were clear - no one in the house until Lindey arrives - no exceptions.

The drive up 71N was easy and clean as a whistle - no traffic snarls whatsoever. Adding that 3rd lane in that 21 mile stretch between Mt Vernon and Mansfield makes all the difference. Arrived at our hotel around 430pm. Our hotel - Hyatt Regency Cleveland at the Arcade downtown - was/is gorgeous. Until then, I didn't really know what an arcade was. Wow! As soon as we checked in our room, I logged into work to make sure everything was quiet. It was. Around 5pm, we headed out. The concert venue, Cleveland House of Blues was literally right across the street. No Ubering necessary. :)

Around the corner from the House of Blues main entrance lies a hopping popular alley called 4th St, I believe. It appears as though it's permanently closed to traffic and instead comprised of several sidewalk cafes. We opted for The Butcher and the Brewer. We weren't disappointed. Great craft beers and excellent food.  The architecture was as interesting as both the beer and food. We both loved the place. We met a handful of folks, some of which were also taking in the Brandi Carlile show. Don't go to Cleveland and miss this place. It's a must visit locale. We opted to eat lightly, choosing appetizers - the bacon wrapped dates and the mini burgers. Both were delicious. I must say, however, for our money, Columbus' 229 does the bacon wrapped dates better than anybody.

Headed to the concert venue where we stood in line for about 5 minutes awaiting the opening. Tickets said show started at 7pm. Doors opened around 705pm. The House of Blues is a small venue. I believe the maximum capacity is 700. Most seats were standing room only, though there is a small balcony with seats. Our standing room seats behind lighting and sound couldn't have been more than 40-50 feet from the stage. Very intimate venue, very colorful, with lots of local art on the walls. Loved it!

Anderson East opened for Brandi. Man can that dude sing. Very strong, moving vocals. Enjoyed him much. Brandi came on around 9pm. She was incredible. Very talented, engaging, and full of energy. She did a nice job mixing up her song list, too. Played both old and new. We enjoyed the show very much. She wrapped it up after two encores around 11pm. Through the show, I enjoyed 2 beers - both White Rajahs.

Headed across the street to our hotel where I snacked on the Chex Mix Mindy brought for me. I checked in with work then hit the sack.

Wednesday, July 29 - Bad McD Coffee - Date Night

Woke near 7am. Checked my work laptop. Sent a couple emails. Soon dressed and out the door for a run. MY hamstring was extra stiff. Didn't give myself the benefit of a healthy stretch. That certainly didn't help. Our hotel was near 9th St, the street where the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame is located. I ran through downtown to the lakefront along and behind the HOF.  It was an absolutely perfect summer morning. Blue skies, warm temps, slight cool breeze. Like downtown Cincy, Cleveland has preserved much of their 19th/20th century architecture. Gorgeous! Nothing but props for Cleveland!

Back at the hotel I jumped in the shower then logged into work. Asked Mindy if we could hit the road pretty quickly. We checked out and hit the road near 9am. Our plan was to stop for coffee once out of the morning rush. We exited @ route 42 and headed east looking for coffee. Ended up at a McD's. - certainly not what either of us had in mind. The service was exceptional. The coffee - unfortunately bad!

The drive home went as well and fast as the drive up. I had Mindy drop me at my customer's campus near 1130am. Asked that she be prepared to come back and pick me up around 330-4pm. Was at my desk and working by noon. Talked with my boss shortly thereafter via cell phone.

Worked through the afternoon, texting, calling Mindy for a ride home around 330pm. We already knew that despite making our house rules clear before leaving the house for Cleveland Tuesday afternoon, Bella broke 'em shortly after we left by allowing her friend and neighbor Kayla in the house, and not just once but twice. Jacob booted her out both times and sent Mindy a text accordingly.

Bella was with Mindy when she picked me up across town. Said Bella was grounded from everything save for TV. Filled me in on all the details of her latest transgression. Oh boy! Buckle up!

Once home, I got right back to work and stayed busy until 6pm or so. Mindy and I headed out for date night shortly thereafter. I hadn't been to CBC for more than a month. I suggested we go there, and Mindy excitedly agreed.

Arrived to a sparsely populated parking lot. Wow, that doesn't happen too much. Kate was tending bar. I haven't enjoyed Kate's company for several months or ever since she moved to days and the lunch shift. It wasn't on the official beer list but they had Bodhi on tap. We both opted for one. I haven't had one  for a really long time. Yum!

Ordered risotto balls then joked that Kate would forget. What do you know, she didn't! While relaxing at the bar, a quick but heavy storm rolled through town. Rained so hard we couldn't see the Miranova building immediately to our north. Needed the rain. Sun came back out even before we left for home an hour later. Before that, I enjoyed a 2nd Bodhi and a plate of wings. Mindy had a steak.

Thursday, July 30 - Bunches of Hairs Cut

Ran four miles but not without sharp hamstring pain for the first 1/2 mile or so. Ouchy! Loosens up after a while but never completely stops.

Sunny and warm. Drove the BM'er and worked from the main office. At lunch I headed to the bank and then to Saturday's to get a haircut. It had been about 6 weeks since my last. Interesting note, I asked for a #2 guard for the back and sides, which I do more often than not. But this time it seemed far shorter than most others. I like it that short, just different.

I thought I would work the rest of the day from home, but remembered that I left my yummy salad in the fridge at work, and since I likely wouldn't be back to the office for several weeks, I decided to head back and get it.

Got home around 3pm where I worked for the remainder of the day. Mindy grilled pork ribs for dinner. Very good. After dinner the family piled into the Accord and drove to the Dairy Queen in Grandview where we went through the drive-thru buying 4 blizzards. For each blizzard purchased on Thursday, $1 went to Children's Hospital - a worthy cause and a win-win.

Friday, July 31 - Knotty Pine & Sideswipe

Worked from home. Ran three miles. I was covering for a peer. Still, a fairly easy day until mid-afternoon. Ended up covering for another peer as well. Had my hands full until well after 6pm. I was on a conference call when the kids left with Jimaken. Kind of sad given that there was a very strong chance that I'd be leaving Sunday morning for Texas with an undetermined return home, and almost certainly at least a few weeks. I gave them both a quick hug on their way out the door.

Took a little while to decompress from the late afternoon barrage but eventually did. Had been in contact with Darwin since Thursday evening about hooking up Friday evening for some beers. Agreed to do dinner and beers at the new Knotty Pine in Grandview, a revamped neighborhood bar and restaurant which is now a microbrew house too. How cool is that?

We picked up Darwin at his place. He was just getting home from work when we showed up. Connie was there with the young boys. They'd just gotten home from the hilltop pool. Said it was chaotic and a mess. Like the Wright's, Connie's family grew up going to the hilltop pool.

Connie opted not to go with. Let Darwin head out alone with the two of us. Later, Mindy emphasized how depressing it is to always be the only girl. Kept on Darwin to prod Connie into joining us. Almost worked.

We enjoyed a couple beers at the Knotty Pine as well as some appetizers. Darwin had wings, I had mussels, and Mindy had their fish dinner. The bartender's name escapes me at the present, but he looked so much like Chris Rock it wasn't funny. Had the personality to boot, too.

After about 90 minutes at the KP we headed for Sideswipe, which we hadn't been to for a couple/few weeks due to vacation. Decent crowd for the tiny venue and a familiar one too. Our new Sideswipe peeps were there: Paul, Daniel and a host of her peeps. Enjoyed two more beers - Fisticuff IPA's.  Hung there until 1140pm - well past Craig's documented closing time. He's a gracious owner/host.

Summer Vacation 2015 - July 10-20

Friday, July 10    D.C. bound

Up early Friday morning to exercise and run. Finished a 3 mile run by 745am. My stated goal was to be on the road by 9am. That said, in the back of my mind, I was good with getting out of town before 10am. I’ve learned to manage the family by giving them an earlier stated goal.

We hit the road at roughly 930am. And just like most trips, I shouted out the current mileage for Bella to recall later so we could track our total vacation mileage. Yeah, I know, we could simply use the trip indicator, but that takes the fun out of it.

It rained for the next 3 or 4 hours, or until we crossed over from PA to MD. It seemed like we hadn’t seen a long stretch of sunny weather for several weeks. We were aching for some sunshine. Like magic, as soon as we dipped a little south of 70E into Maryland the skies cleared and the temps soared into the 80s. Ahh, summer!

The first leg of our vacation was 2 night stay in D.C. We pulled into town near 4pm. Funny how we seemingly came out of the woods along the Potomac and the next thing we knew we were on Embassy row –Massachusetts Ave. Very cool! Our hotel was on that same street but a few miles further into town. In fact, our hotel – Homewood Suites – was just a few blocks from the White House. We found it rather easily.

The kids were more than thrilled that we had a suite – essentially a living room and bedroom, though the living room would double as their shared bedroom. We didn’t spend but maybe 20-25 minutes in the room before setting out about the town. Just before we heading out, I placed a call to cousin Mike C. to hopefully arrange a visit and dinner venue for Saturday evening. We discussed a couple options, one going to their place, and two, meeting in town for dinner. We left it open ended.

All were hungry so our first priority was something to eat. Just a few blocks from the White House we found a Mediterranean version of Chipotle where we all agreed to dine. Decent food, but not out of this world. Still, it did the trick!

First stop, the White House from Pennsylvania Ave. I’d seen the White House before but only from the rear or Constitution Ave. Very cool! Hot too, by the way. Felt like almost 90 and nothing but blue skies. And since we were sun deprived in Columbus, the bright sun was almost too much to take.

After a walk by the White House, we took in the Eisenhower Building directly adjacent or to the west. From there we headed to the National Mall where we took in all the memorials, including the Washington monument, World War II, Vietnam War, Lincoln, and lastly the Korean War.

It’s fair to say, that Mindy was a little sore with the three of us. Jacob I understand, all he did was complain. I’d said or done nothing to deserve her scorn.  She seemed to mellow as the evening progressed. Cousin Mike was right, my legs were cramping by the time we made it back to our hotel, which was probably close to 9pm. All totaled, I’ll bet we walked a good 4 miles.

By then the kids were hungry again and wanted to order pizza. Mindy wasn’t to hip to the idea but I, however, was eager to please and found the flyer left under our door and ordered a pizza and some fried rice. Long story, but we eventually got our pizza and fried rice. The pizza wasn’t much more than a frozen pizza warmed. The fried rice was good, though.

Lights out by 1030pm.

Saturday, July 11  - Cousin Mike and family

Up bright and early Saturday morning and out for a run around the Washington Monument. Again, it was pleasantly sunny! Very much enjoyed the run about town. Much to my surprise, Mindy was in the hotel lobby enjoying complimentary breakfast upon my return. We enjoyed some time together before heading back to the room where the kids opted to sleep in.

Mindy suggested that we leave them sleep and take off for some site seeing of our own. That way we could visit a few of the Smithsonian museums without any complaining. We set out around 10am, best guess. Gorgeous morning. We headed to the National Archives where we spent the next couple hours. It must’ve been near noon when the kids sent a text sharing that they were up, ready and on their way to meet us. We met them near the National Mall, but not before taking a quick stroll through the Art museum’s sculpture garden. Very cool!

From there we lunched with the kids from the many food trucks lining the street before eventually heading to the Natural History museum. The Natural History museum we took in several exhibits, including the Hope diamond, evolution of mankind, ocean animals, dinosaurs, etc. Before we knew it, it was after 4pm. We had ideas on seeing the space and flight museum too, but we were running out of gas
and time.

I got a hold of Mike once we were back at the hotel. Via text, we’d already agreed to take the train (subway) out to his place for dinner. I was much looking forward to hooking up with Mike and meeting his wife and kids, whom we’ve never met. We guesstimated our arrival to be around 7pm. Mike gave me directions for subwaying to his neighborhood, which was NW, I believe from downtown D.C. We picked up the subway at DuPont Circle. Very fun. Frist subway ride for both kids. Mike met us at the Grosvenor/Strathmore stop. Pretty sure he lives in Bethesda.

As close as he is to town, his home is tucked away in a very nice older neighborhood with mature trees and large lawns – very close to the Potomac.  We met Barbara, Andrew and Rebecca (Becca). His oldest daughter, Katy, was working. We had a lovely time visiting, talking and getting to know the family. Barbara was a very gracious host, and their kids very polite and helpful. Before dinner, I enjoyed a beer on their covered deck on the east side of the house (I think). Chatted with the two kids while Mike grilled salmon, burgers and dogs. They put on quite a spread with so little warning. We very much appreciated their kindness. The kids all hit it off really well. Later, after dinner and dessert, Katie finally got home from work. She seems very nice too, and will soon be finding her way to Ohio where she’ll attend college. We offered our home as a weekend refuge should she need to get away any time she’s in Ohio.

The plan all along was for Mike to drive us back to the city (to our hotel) after our visit. That was really fun too, and the kids had a ball yuck it up from the back of their Honda minivan. Andrew seemed a little shy at first but was quite the entertainer once they got to know one another.

Before dropping us at our hotel, Mike drove us around the National Mall and closer to the Capital building, which we didn’t get a chance to see earlier in the day. Gave us some historical context too, which helped better understand the lay of the land. Again, we can’t thank Mike and Barb enough for hosting us, especially so last minute. We thoroughly enjoyed their company. Guessing we were back at the hotel near 1045-11pm.

Sunday, July 12  - Davanita Beach house

Eager to get to the beach, I was up near 7am and soon out the door for my run. This time I opted to run away from town and through the residential district in and around DuPont Circle. Very cool! Lovely homes with lovely landscaping. Gone about 40-45 minutes. Took Mindy coffee and then promptly hit the shower. We headed to breakfast without the kids around 8am.

I hoped to be on the road for Garden City by 9am. Bella was moving slow. We didn’t get on the road until 935am. No biggie. The drive to the beach was expected to be about the same as the drive from CMH to DC. Mike gave us some cursory directions to I-95 before dropping us the night before. We found the freeway with little to no trouble. What we weren’t expecting was the hour long traffic snarl outside and south of DC and well into VA. Actually even a bit longer. Bumper to bumper for about 40 miles. Ugh!!

We stopped for gas and food somewhere in VA. Finally the traffic opened up and was never an issue again. Long time on I-95 – pretty much all the way down and well into NC or 360+ miles of the 440 mile trip. The last 30 miles included numerous jogs on old two lane highways. Arrived at David & Anita’s Garden City beach home at 6pm on the nose. Ahhh … after a couple quick hugs we ventured across the street and onto the beach just to get a sniff of the fresh ocean air.  Very pleasant.

2-story, 4-bedroom, 2-bath beach house. Nice, quaint. Older décor but ideal for the locale. After luggin’ in our luggage and a quick peek at the beach, we headed off to dinner at the Gulfstream restaurant, which sits on the marsh side of the strip, and a couple miles further south in the quiet end of Garden City Beach. Coming from such crappy weather, Mindy and I requested outdoor seating, In hindsight, that probably was a mistake given the bright sun, warm temps, and high humidity, but hey! We enjoyed a very nice seafood dinner. I had mussels and Alaskan King crab legs. Yum!

Back at the beach house, we headed out for a night time stroll on the beach. Gave Bella my flashlight so she could chase crabs. David and I walked all the way to the pier and then up the stairs to the retail district of Garden City Beach. The girls and Jacob walked back on the beach.

We weren’t up too much later, tired from another day of driving.

Monday, July 13 – Front nine & Drunken Jacks

I ran Waccamaw Dr. to Atlantic Ave. then along the Marsh then back to the house via the beach, but not before a jaunt out on the pier to check out what it was all about. Very warm running in the warm, muggy sun on the beach. The ocean breeze made it tolerable.

David and I planned to golf and wasted little time getting ready. I threw my clubs in his car. Think we were on the links by 930am. A little pricey - $98 for the two of us to play 18 holes, but also a very nice course.  Unfortunately, the course backed up in a hurry, in fact so much so that we opted to skip a hole in an effort to get out from of a couple slow groups just in front of us. The starter on the golf cart encouraged us to do so. By the time we finished the 9th hole, it was all backed up again. We opted to bag it for the day, now about 1130am and scorching hot (low 90s and sunny). David headed inside the club house requesting a rain check for another nine holes. Surprisingly, they were most gracious and granted the request. We planned to come back Tuesday or Wednesday a bit earlier to finish.

We stopped for ice, beer and a few other things at the Kroger at the beach connector. Very convenient. The girls were just back from the beach but planned to head back with us. Jacob & Bella were still down there. David & I met them there. We hung out on the beach for a good couple hours. He skies soon turned overcast and later stormy. By then, however, we were back at the beach house on the lovely front porch, where we enjoyed a few more beers and some tunes. David suggested we head to Murrells Inlet for dinner. We let the kids stay back at the beach house after fetching them a pizza.

We dined on appetizers at Drunken Jack’s while also enjoying a few more local craft beers. We soon ventured out along the marsh boardwalk where we took in a two man band playing some bug music at an outdoor bar. Very cool! Enjoyed that very much! Guessing it was near 11pm by the time we headed back to the beach house.

Tuesday, July 14 – Wicked Tuna

After a lovely morning run along the strip and beach, we opted for a leisurely day hanging out at the beach. Lower key day, no drinking at the beach or beach house for me. Threw the Frisbee with the kids and David at the beach. We had three variations on the flying disc: traditional Frisbee, hollow, round ring, and then another that resembled the lid off of a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket, though translucent top with a stiff edge. Surprisingly, it was easiest to fly/guide through the stiff ocean breeze.

David suggested we dine at Murrell’s Inlet again, only this time at Wicked Tuna, a newer place along the marsh walk. This time the kids went along for the dining experience. All the restaurants along the boardwalk were crowded. Hard to find parking but we managed. Directly attached to wicked tuna was Crazy Sister’s marina, which offers all sorts of water sports. And since Mindy and the kids had been talking about going parasailing, I went to enquire about it while waiting on drinks and appetizers. Would be about $165 for the three of them. Offered to pay for all of them to go if they were game. They were. Gave Mindy my ccard for booking. She returned a few minutes later but sharing that the price was a bit higher than what they quoted me moments earlier. She and I walked back to ask what gave. They apologized, and cited that they forgot to deduct the special discount they quoted me. They quickly resolved the matter.

Dinner was delightful. I had broiled grouper – expensive too. Dinner for 6, including tip, was over $400, but that included appetizers and drinks too. Not sure it was worth that price! Meh – vacation.
With full bellies, we headed back to the beach house. We sat on the front porch where I sipped a Jack & Coke. Through the large side window in the neighbors house, I could see the MLB All-Star game going on, live from Cincy. I didn’t have much interest in watching the game for real. Thinking we were in bed by 10pm. David and I planned to golf Wednesday morning, taking advantage of the rain check we got Monday.

Wednesday, July 15 – Back nine & Parasail

Already the last full day on the beach. Once again, I ran to the north along the strip and beyond and then back along the beach. Despite begin out early – before 730am, the sun was still very warm. Good run! Before leaving for golf, this time in the Pilot, I delivered a cup of coffee to Mindy’s bedside. David and I planned to stop at Lowes after golf to pick-up a new gas grill and new rocker for the front porch.

David arranged for us to tee off the back nine in lieu of following the many groups already out. The idea was that we would have to wait until we spotted the first group teeing off hole #9. At that point we were told we could tee of off #10 so we could get in the back nine. They guessed that it would be a 10-15 wait. In reality, it was more like 30 minutes, but still well worth it. We wouldn’t have anyone out in front of us, so there would be no waiting which both of us hate.

I played OK and within myself. My driving was something less than spectacular, but my second shots were decent. I think I carded bogey golf. David beat me by a handful of strokes. Finished up by 1030am and headed directly across the street to Lowes where David picked out a new gas grill. Got a great deal after having to engage the manager to honor their poorly documented sale. He picked up all the necessary accoutrements as well – a full tank of propane, cover, mat, and utensils. They didn’t have more of the white rockers in their circular. But David had another idea. Asked that we stop at Cracker Barrel which was directly across the street. There he bought a fine wooden rocker. The price was notably higher than Lowes but more than likely of higher quality too.

We stopped at Kroger for a few grocery items, including ice, and then at the new growler fill place on the beach connector. Back at the beach house we quickly ate some lunch then headed over to the beach. I was going to drive to Murrell’s Inlet with Mindy and the kids for their parasailing adventure but Mindy assured me that they’d be fine and that she knew how to get there. That way I wouldn’t have to wait around while they parasailed. Cool.

David, Anita and I hung at the sunny beach, David and I sippin’ beers. Good times! I could see Mindy and the kids parasailing way out in the ocean. However, I only knew it was them due to the time and general area. Only two parasailing outfits heading out of the Inlet.

We moved our beach chairs back twice that afternoon as the high tide was moving in. Late afternoon David and I were greeted on the beach by three young men from Minnesota wanting to share the good news of Christ. We engaged them in some light discussion, which was likely a little bit more than they bargained for. I encouraged applauded their endeavor but asked that they too keep an open mind as they move forward in life.

Back at the house I took a brief nap while David prepped and grilled dinner – grilled chicken thighs and breasts. He also whipped up yellow rice and black beans along with a tasty salad. Very good!! Jacob met a girl from Ohio while parasailing, and she and her family invited him to join them at putt-putt on Murrell’s Inlet. They picked him up on a golf cart, which is a popular mode of transportation all along the grand strand. I think he was back around 1030-11pm.

Thursday, July 16 – Beach to the Lake Wateree in 3 hours

Time for David and I to head to the lake house, while Anita, Mindy and the kids stuck around Garden City beach for one more night, but not at the beach house. Apparently a scheduling snafu with the family beach house for which Anita opted not to make a fuss or scene. Instead, she and David graciously paid for a room at a popular Myrtle Beach resort for one night. The reason they needed to stay an additional night is because we booked a flight home for Jacob way back in mid-May when we thought we had the beach house through Sunday.

Up early – by about 615am, I finally got a glimpse and photos of the lovely sunrise over the ocean. Of course impromptu photos meant a steamed up camera lens. This time I decided to run south towards the Gulfstream restaurant – to the quieter end of the strand. Nicer homes down there too. Very nice, in fact! A little further than I imagined, probably 2 miles. I ran the beach on the run back. Nice!

David said we should plan to be out of the house by 11am. Still before 8am, he was rearing and eager to go. Mindy and I were all but packed by 815am. We took our coffee and went for a walk on the beach. Nice! David was chomping at the bit to hit the road. J Had all the stuff setting alongside the Pilot, since we’d be leaving the Prius for the girls and kids.

Anita’s daughter was expected at the house near noon. However, Anita didn’t really want to have an unpleasant run in so we cleaned up the place and pulled out well before 10am (closer to 915am). I suggested we have lunch with the girls, but David said we needed to get on the road. Anita quickly reminded him that he agreed to visit the beach flea market with her. Too funny!

We headed to highway 17, I think it is, and to the north just a spit to the beach flea market. Rows and rows of tents of vendors selling their wares. Jacob misplaced his iPhone charger so Mindy bought him a new one there. Ended up being faulty. Of course we didn’t know it at the time. Like all the other days that week, it was hot! And the tents had no AC. I couldn’t take it anymore and headed to the car to wait. Jacob came with me.

Agreed to head to Murrell’s Inlet to get some lunch with the family before heading our separate ways. The girls couldn’t check into their Myrtle Beach resort until 3pm anyway. Because Drunken Jack’s wasn’t yet open, we headed across the street to a gift shop. Spent too much time there. Mindy bought a few things. Headed across the street to Drunken Jack’s again near 1050am. Seated us even though they weren’t technically opened until 11am.

Enjoyed some lunch – more seafood for me, a fish sandwich. Proud to say, we’d eaten nothing from a chain while on vacation, and mostly seafood for me. Finished lunch around noon. Gave the kids and Mindy a hug and wished Jacob a safe flight home Friday afternoon. Wouldn’t see him until Monday or Tuesday evening in CMH. The girls headed with the kids to Myrtle Beach while David and I headed to Lake Wateree. The plan was to be there before 4pm so we could pick-up his newly acquired boat at the nearby marina repair shop. Brother Tommy and Wally were driving down too, and they expected to arrive sometime near 4pm as well.

We made good time heading west with a few brief jogs to the north. Arrived at the Wateree marina around 340pm. David headed inside to settle up for the work on his new used runabout while I waited in the car. We hitched the boat to the Pilot and headed off to David’s lake house, just another mile or two up the road.

Tommy & Wally were already there but had only recently arrived. They were out back on the dock awaiting our arrival. We’d been in touch via text for the past couple hours. Took a while to unload all our beach gear. And because David was showing Tommy around the place, I carried in most of it.  By the time we finished I was beat from the heat.

We hung out inside for a while relaxing until  I received a call from our home security alarm company sharing that they received another phone line cut alarm. Funny, I had just been thinking about that over the past couple days. At about the same time, I started experiencing issues with my cell phone. Inexplicably stopped working. Long story short, ended up being an issue after paring with David’s JBL Charge 2 wireless speaker. After an hour of calls with VZW HD we figured it out on our own. Once the pairing was torn down, my phone started working again. Weird!

Wasn’t too much later when launched David’s new boat from the nearby boat launch on June Creek. David headed straight to his dock before we all headed out for its maiden voyage. We sipped a few beers and enjoyed leftovers for dinner – the same fare we had Wednesday evening at the beach – chicken, black beans and rice. Delicious again. All week, David and I had loosely discussed partying like rock stars Thursday night. But in reality, we did anything but. All very tame. I guess we can blame Wally’s presence for that. J

Friday, July 17 - Retreat

Despite and rainless forecast, I woke to overcast skies. Thinking I was up near 720am, which for years has my natural rise time barring any outlandish drinking/partying the night before. David was already up, of course, always is. After some coffee, I headed out on a run. Ran to River Rd. and back, and did so at a decent pace and without completely depleting my energy stores. Will all the hills, it’s a true test of my health and endurance.  I’m in better shape than the year prior when those same hills kicked my ever lovin’ arse! J

After an early morning boat ride fruitlessly looking for bald eagles, we spent most of the day playing/swimming off of the dock. After a few beers David wanted to rearrange the plastic puzzle dock pieces he has to better accommodate his growing fleet of water toys (pontoon, runabout, and 2 jet skis). It wasn’t a pleasant experience having David curtly barking orders at us, but we eventually achieved the desired results.

We were expecting the girls to arrive around 4pm after dropping Jacob at the Myrtle Beach airport around noon. Mindy and I were texting back and forth until she sent what seemed like a rude comment. No more of that! I guess that’s the danger of texts … context.

They arrived near 430pm. By then, we’d had plenty of time in the sun and plenty of beers. After a brief rest, we got cleaned up and pontooned to dinner at the Retreat. Packed house and only one dock space available for mooring. We enjoyed a beer from the covered patio before our table for seven was ready.

Good meal! Always is. Mindy and I both enjoyed tips and grits. Lovely sunset on the drive there. Dark for the drive back. Good times!

Saturday, July 18 – Pork Butt

Another good, hot and sunny run, but this time the opposite direction, to and past Suede Ln. Tommy, Wally, David and I took off around 930am to fuel the jet skis and pontoon at Beaver Creek marina. Partied from the dock most of the day, taking off in the jet skis a time or two. Good times! Had just a couple brews before moving on to water. Got lots and lots of sun, probably too much. It was very warm and sunny, just what us Ohioans ordered.

David smoke a couple pork butts beginning early that morning. We picked at the smaller of the two from the dock. He pulled off the larger, more meaty butt later for dinner.

Headed in too cool off and possibly nap around 430pm. About the same time, clouds and an eventual storm moved in. While Mindy slept, I watched TV. It poured rain. Could hear it beating against the roof and windows. Lasted something less than an hour, but still a lot of rain in a short amount of time.

The 2nd pork butt was exceptionally tender and delicious.  I pieced on it after my nap and shower. By then the sun was out though about to set. David and I went out to check his new boat since we knew the bilge pump wasn’t working. A whole lot of water on board and enough to have the lower half of the engine block submerged. The only way to drain would be to pull it out. David promptly drove over to the June Creek boat launch where I met him with the trailer.

Said it would only go slightly above idle the whole way. Uh-oh! Once on the trailer, we let it drain from the ramp for a solid 10 minutes. We took it back to his place. Enjoyed a Jack & Coke while watching some TV – a program highlighting session musicians from the 60s/70s. Pretty much one group of musicians played on just about all the hits from that era. Who knew? We also watched a foodie program from New Orleans.

Sunday, July 19 – Last full day on the lake

Another run to River Rd and back. I was out a little earlier so the sun had little impact. Still plenty hot and humid though. Temps and humidity both above 80%.

The days plan included going on a eagle watch boat cruise and then lunch (hamburgers) at one of the lake Wateree marinas with great burgers. I was skeptical about seeing a bald eagle. After all, this was our fifth visit and we’ve yet to see one. But see one, we did. Kind of hard to distinguish and eagle from other local birds of prey with the naked eye, but David’s zoom lens doesn’t lie. Gorgeous bird!

I drove the boat allowing David to relax and enjoy a little time with his wife. Hot & sunny. Bella and Wally tubed all the way to the marina, where we docked and enjoyed lunch. Yum, yum!

Back at the lake house, we played on the jet skis. I didn’t drink but one beer all day. David and I pulled the runabout out of the lake again as a chance of thunderstorms loomed on the horizon. We knew it would hit if we left it in the water. Just how things work. Of course it never did rain.

David cooked up a New Orleans style dinner – crawfish, corn on the cob, tater boil. He & Tommy partook big. The rest of us enjoyed a nice, fresh salad.  The plan was to head home Monday morning. Gone from home for 10 days. Was looking forward to some downtime at home.

Monday, July 20 – Home

Up early. Thinking it was near 630am. Ran to and past Suede Ln again. Nice run, and early enough that the sun didn’t play too large a role. Mindy & Anita stayed on top of laundry during our entire stay, which made packing for home easy. Clothes wise, we didn’t bring that much anyway.

Tommy left a note in the visitors book. Did a group photo before heading out. Had a great time both at the beach and lake, a much needed break from the recent stress and ugly Ohio weather. Hit the road near 930am.

Perhaps the easiest drive home ever. No weather issues and no traffic snarls. And while GPS had us taking 64 to Rt 35 west , we defied its direction and headed further north on I-77 to Rt 33. Lovely drive towards home. Sunny when we arrived very near 6pm, or 8.5 hours. A couple hundred miles from home Mindy and I discussed our arrival. I suggested we stop first at home to unload and then I would stay behind to mow the lawn while she and Bella went after Eiknarf. Our lawn hadn’t been cut for 11 days. I knew it would be long.

The lawn wasn’t as out of control as I expected, but it was wet, long and lush. In fact, it looked more like spring lush rather than late summer lush. I was in shorts and mowing within 20 minutes of arriving home. I push mowed the entire front and most of the back to avoid tractor tire ruts.

Looked good by my finish. Of course Mindy and the kids were back by the time I finished. Jacob was home then, too. Jimaken dropped him after soccer practice. After a shower, the family headed off to Barley’s. Nice to be home and nice to have a familiar beer and wings. Yum!
