Summer Vacation 2015 - July 10-20

Friday, July 10    D.C. bound

Up early Friday morning to exercise and run. Finished a 3 mile run by 745am. My stated goal was to be on the road by 9am. That said, in the back of my mind, I was good with getting out of town before 10am. I’ve learned to manage the family by giving them an earlier stated goal.

We hit the road at roughly 930am. And just like most trips, I shouted out the current mileage for Bella to recall later so we could track our total vacation mileage. Yeah, I know, we could simply use the trip indicator, but that takes the fun out of it.

It rained for the next 3 or 4 hours, or until we crossed over from PA to MD. It seemed like we hadn’t seen a long stretch of sunny weather for several weeks. We were aching for some sunshine. Like magic, as soon as we dipped a little south of 70E into Maryland the skies cleared and the temps soared into the 80s. Ahh, summer!

The first leg of our vacation was 2 night stay in D.C. We pulled into town near 4pm. Funny how we seemingly came out of the woods along the Potomac and the next thing we knew we were on Embassy row –Massachusetts Ave. Very cool! Our hotel was on that same street but a few miles further into town. In fact, our hotel – Homewood Suites – was just a few blocks from the White House. We found it rather easily.

The kids were more than thrilled that we had a suite – essentially a living room and bedroom, though the living room would double as their shared bedroom. We didn’t spend but maybe 20-25 minutes in the room before setting out about the town. Just before we heading out, I placed a call to cousin Mike C. to hopefully arrange a visit and dinner venue for Saturday evening. We discussed a couple options, one going to their place, and two, meeting in town for dinner. We left it open ended.

All were hungry so our first priority was something to eat. Just a few blocks from the White House we found a Mediterranean version of Chipotle where we all agreed to dine. Decent food, but not out of this world. Still, it did the trick!

First stop, the White House from Pennsylvania Ave. I’d seen the White House before but only from the rear or Constitution Ave. Very cool! Hot too, by the way. Felt like almost 90 and nothing but blue skies. And since we were sun deprived in Columbus, the bright sun was almost too much to take.

After a walk by the White House, we took in the Eisenhower Building directly adjacent or to the west. From there we headed to the National Mall where we took in all the memorials, including the Washington monument, World War II, Vietnam War, Lincoln, and lastly the Korean War.

It’s fair to say, that Mindy was a little sore with the three of us. Jacob I understand, all he did was complain. I’d said or done nothing to deserve her scorn.  She seemed to mellow as the evening progressed. Cousin Mike was right, my legs were cramping by the time we made it back to our hotel, which was probably close to 9pm. All totaled, I’ll bet we walked a good 4 miles.

By then the kids were hungry again and wanted to order pizza. Mindy wasn’t to hip to the idea but I, however, was eager to please and found the flyer left under our door and ordered a pizza and some fried rice. Long story, but we eventually got our pizza and fried rice. The pizza wasn’t much more than a frozen pizza warmed. The fried rice was good, though.

Lights out by 1030pm.

Saturday, July 11  - Cousin Mike and family

Up bright and early Saturday morning and out for a run around the Washington Monument. Again, it was pleasantly sunny! Very much enjoyed the run about town. Much to my surprise, Mindy was in the hotel lobby enjoying complimentary breakfast upon my return. We enjoyed some time together before heading back to the room where the kids opted to sleep in.

Mindy suggested that we leave them sleep and take off for some site seeing of our own. That way we could visit a few of the Smithsonian museums without any complaining. We set out around 10am, best guess. Gorgeous morning. We headed to the National Archives where we spent the next couple hours. It must’ve been near noon when the kids sent a text sharing that they were up, ready and on their way to meet us. We met them near the National Mall, but not before taking a quick stroll through the Art museum’s sculpture garden. Very cool!

From there we lunched with the kids from the many food trucks lining the street before eventually heading to the Natural History museum. The Natural History museum we took in several exhibits, including the Hope diamond, evolution of mankind, ocean animals, dinosaurs, etc. Before we knew it, it was after 4pm. We had ideas on seeing the space and flight museum too, but we were running out of gas
and time.

I got a hold of Mike once we were back at the hotel. Via text, we’d already agreed to take the train (subway) out to his place for dinner. I was much looking forward to hooking up with Mike and meeting his wife and kids, whom we’ve never met. We guesstimated our arrival to be around 7pm. Mike gave me directions for subwaying to his neighborhood, which was NW, I believe from downtown D.C. We picked up the subway at DuPont Circle. Very fun. Frist subway ride for both kids. Mike met us at the Grosvenor/Strathmore stop. Pretty sure he lives in Bethesda.

As close as he is to town, his home is tucked away in a very nice older neighborhood with mature trees and large lawns – very close to the Potomac.  We met Barbara, Andrew and Rebecca (Becca). His oldest daughter, Katy, was working. We had a lovely time visiting, talking and getting to know the family. Barbara was a very gracious host, and their kids very polite and helpful. Before dinner, I enjoyed a beer on their covered deck on the east side of the house (I think). Chatted with the two kids while Mike grilled salmon, burgers and dogs. They put on quite a spread with so little warning. We very much appreciated their kindness. The kids all hit it off really well. Later, after dinner and dessert, Katie finally got home from work. She seems very nice too, and will soon be finding her way to Ohio where she’ll attend college. We offered our home as a weekend refuge should she need to get away any time she’s in Ohio.

The plan all along was for Mike to drive us back to the city (to our hotel) after our visit. That was really fun too, and the kids had a ball yuck it up from the back of their Honda minivan. Andrew seemed a little shy at first but was quite the entertainer once they got to know one another.

Before dropping us at our hotel, Mike drove us around the National Mall and closer to the Capital building, which we didn’t get a chance to see earlier in the day. Gave us some historical context too, which helped better understand the lay of the land. Again, we can’t thank Mike and Barb enough for hosting us, especially so last minute. We thoroughly enjoyed their company. Guessing we were back at the hotel near 1045-11pm.

Sunday, July 12  - Davanita Beach house

Eager to get to the beach, I was up near 7am and soon out the door for my run. This time I opted to run away from town and through the residential district in and around DuPont Circle. Very cool! Lovely homes with lovely landscaping. Gone about 40-45 minutes. Took Mindy coffee and then promptly hit the shower. We headed to breakfast without the kids around 8am.

I hoped to be on the road for Garden City by 9am. Bella was moving slow. We didn’t get on the road until 935am. No biggie. The drive to the beach was expected to be about the same as the drive from CMH to DC. Mike gave us some cursory directions to I-95 before dropping us the night before. We found the freeway with little to no trouble. What we weren’t expecting was the hour long traffic snarl outside and south of DC and well into VA. Actually even a bit longer. Bumper to bumper for about 40 miles. Ugh!!

We stopped for gas and food somewhere in VA. Finally the traffic opened up and was never an issue again. Long time on I-95 – pretty much all the way down and well into NC or 360+ miles of the 440 mile trip. The last 30 miles included numerous jogs on old two lane highways. Arrived at David & Anita’s Garden City beach home at 6pm on the nose. Ahhh … after a couple quick hugs we ventured across the street and onto the beach just to get a sniff of the fresh ocean air.  Very pleasant.

2-story, 4-bedroom, 2-bath beach house. Nice, quaint. Older décor but ideal for the locale. After luggin’ in our luggage and a quick peek at the beach, we headed off to dinner at the Gulfstream restaurant, which sits on the marsh side of the strip, and a couple miles further south in the quiet end of Garden City Beach. Coming from such crappy weather, Mindy and I requested outdoor seating, In hindsight, that probably was a mistake given the bright sun, warm temps, and high humidity, but hey! We enjoyed a very nice seafood dinner. I had mussels and Alaskan King crab legs. Yum!

Back at the beach house, we headed out for a night time stroll on the beach. Gave Bella my flashlight so she could chase crabs. David and I walked all the way to the pier and then up the stairs to the retail district of Garden City Beach. The girls and Jacob walked back on the beach.

We weren’t up too much later, tired from another day of driving.

Monday, July 13 – Front nine & Drunken Jacks

I ran Waccamaw Dr. to Atlantic Ave. then along the Marsh then back to the house via the beach, but not before a jaunt out on the pier to check out what it was all about. Very warm running in the warm, muggy sun on the beach. The ocean breeze made it tolerable.

David and I planned to golf and wasted little time getting ready. I threw my clubs in his car. Think we were on the links by 930am. A little pricey - $98 for the two of us to play 18 holes, but also a very nice course.  Unfortunately, the course backed up in a hurry, in fact so much so that we opted to skip a hole in an effort to get out from of a couple slow groups just in front of us. The starter on the golf cart encouraged us to do so. By the time we finished the 9th hole, it was all backed up again. We opted to bag it for the day, now about 1130am and scorching hot (low 90s and sunny). David headed inside the club house requesting a rain check for another nine holes. Surprisingly, they were most gracious and granted the request. We planned to come back Tuesday or Wednesday a bit earlier to finish.

We stopped for ice, beer and a few other things at the Kroger at the beach connector. Very convenient. The girls were just back from the beach but planned to head back with us. Jacob & Bella were still down there. David & I met them there. We hung out on the beach for a good couple hours. He skies soon turned overcast and later stormy. By then, however, we were back at the beach house on the lovely front porch, where we enjoyed a few more beers and some tunes. David suggested we head to Murrells Inlet for dinner. We let the kids stay back at the beach house after fetching them a pizza.

We dined on appetizers at Drunken Jack’s while also enjoying a few more local craft beers. We soon ventured out along the marsh boardwalk where we took in a two man band playing some bug music at an outdoor bar. Very cool! Enjoyed that very much! Guessing it was near 11pm by the time we headed back to the beach house.

Tuesday, July 14 – Wicked Tuna

After a lovely morning run along the strip and beach, we opted for a leisurely day hanging out at the beach. Lower key day, no drinking at the beach or beach house for me. Threw the Frisbee with the kids and David at the beach. We had three variations on the flying disc: traditional Frisbee, hollow, round ring, and then another that resembled the lid off of a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket, though translucent top with a stiff edge. Surprisingly, it was easiest to fly/guide through the stiff ocean breeze.

David suggested we dine at Murrell’s Inlet again, only this time at Wicked Tuna, a newer place along the marsh walk. This time the kids went along for the dining experience. All the restaurants along the boardwalk were crowded. Hard to find parking but we managed. Directly attached to wicked tuna was Crazy Sister’s marina, which offers all sorts of water sports. And since Mindy and the kids had been talking about going parasailing, I went to enquire about it while waiting on drinks and appetizers. Would be about $165 for the three of them. Offered to pay for all of them to go if they were game. They were. Gave Mindy my ccard for booking. She returned a few minutes later but sharing that the price was a bit higher than what they quoted me moments earlier. She and I walked back to ask what gave. They apologized, and cited that they forgot to deduct the special discount they quoted me. They quickly resolved the matter.

Dinner was delightful. I had broiled grouper – expensive too. Dinner for 6, including tip, was over $400, but that included appetizers and drinks too. Not sure it was worth that price! Meh – vacation.
With full bellies, we headed back to the beach house. We sat on the front porch where I sipped a Jack & Coke. Through the large side window in the neighbors house, I could see the MLB All-Star game going on, live from Cincy. I didn’t have much interest in watching the game for real. Thinking we were in bed by 10pm. David and I planned to golf Wednesday morning, taking advantage of the rain check we got Monday.

Wednesday, July 15 – Back nine & Parasail

Already the last full day on the beach. Once again, I ran to the north along the strip and beyond and then back along the beach. Despite begin out early – before 730am, the sun was still very warm. Good run! Before leaving for golf, this time in the Pilot, I delivered a cup of coffee to Mindy’s bedside. David and I planned to stop at Lowes after golf to pick-up a new gas grill and new rocker for the front porch.

David arranged for us to tee off the back nine in lieu of following the many groups already out. The idea was that we would have to wait until we spotted the first group teeing off hole #9. At that point we were told we could tee of off #10 so we could get in the back nine. They guessed that it would be a 10-15 wait. In reality, it was more like 30 minutes, but still well worth it. We wouldn’t have anyone out in front of us, so there would be no waiting which both of us hate.

I played OK and within myself. My driving was something less than spectacular, but my second shots were decent. I think I carded bogey golf. David beat me by a handful of strokes. Finished up by 1030am and headed directly across the street to Lowes where David picked out a new gas grill. Got a great deal after having to engage the manager to honor their poorly documented sale. He picked up all the necessary accoutrements as well – a full tank of propane, cover, mat, and utensils. They didn’t have more of the white rockers in their circular. But David had another idea. Asked that we stop at Cracker Barrel which was directly across the street. There he bought a fine wooden rocker. The price was notably higher than Lowes but more than likely of higher quality too.

We stopped at Kroger for a few grocery items, including ice, and then at the new growler fill place on the beach connector. Back at the beach house we quickly ate some lunch then headed over to the beach. I was going to drive to Murrell’s Inlet with Mindy and the kids for their parasailing adventure but Mindy assured me that they’d be fine and that she knew how to get there. That way I wouldn’t have to wait around while they parasailed. Cool.

David, Anita and I hung at the sunny beach, David and I sippin’ beers. Good times! I could see Mindy and the kids parasailing way out in the ocean. However, I only knew it was them due to the time and general area. Only two parasailing outfits heading out of the Inlet.

We moved our beach chairs back twice that afternoon as the high tide was moving in. Late afternoon David and I were greeted on the beach by three young men from Minnesota wanting to share the good news of Christ. We engaged them in some light discussion, which was likely a little bit more than they bargained for. I encouraged applauded their endeavor but asked that they too keep an open mind as they move forward in life.

Back at the house I took a brief nap while David prepped and grilled dinner – grilled chicken thighs and breasts. He also whipped up yellow rice and black beans along with a tasty salad. Very good!! Jacob met a girl from Ohio while parasailing, and she and her family invited him to join them at putt-putt on Murrell’s Inlet. They picked him up on a golf cart, which is a popular mode of transportation all along the grand strand. I think he was back around 1030-11pm.

Thursday, July 16 – Beach to the Lake Wateree in 3 hours

Time for David and I to head to the lake house, while Anita, Mindy and the kids stuck around Garden City beach for one more night, but not at the beach house. Apparently a scheduling snafu with the family beach house for which Anita opted not to make a fuss or scene. Instead, she and David graciously paid for a room at a popular Myrtle Beach resort for one night. The reason they needed to stay an additional night is because we booked a flight home for Jacob way back in mid-May when we thought we had the beach house through Sunday.

Up early – by about 615am, I finally got a glimpse and photos of the lovely sunrise over the ocean. Of course impromptu photos meant a steamed up camera lens. This time I decided to run south towards the Gulfstream restaurant – to the quieter end of the strand. Nicer homes down there too. Very nice, in fact! A little further than I imagined, probably 2 miles. I ran the beach on the run back. Nice!

David said we should plan to be out of the house by 11am. Still before 8am, he was rearing and eager to go. Mindy and I were all but packed by 815am. We took our coffee and went for a walk on the beach. Nice! David was chomping at the bit to hit the road. J Had all the stuff setting alongside the Pilot, since we’d be leaving the Prius for the girls and kids.

Anita’s daughter was expected at the house near noon. However, Anita didn’t really want to have an unpleasant run in so we cleaned up the place and pulled out well before 10am (closer to 915am). I suggested we have lunch with the girls, but David said we needed to get on the road. Anita quickly reminded him that he agreed to visit the beach flea market with her. Too funny!

We headed to highway 17, I think it is, and to the north just a spit to the beach flea market. Rows and rows of tents of vendors selling their wares. Jacob misplaced his iPhone charger so Mindy bought him a new one there. Ended up being faulty. Of course we didn’t know it at the time. Like all the other days that week, it was hot! And the tents had no AC. I couldn’t take it anymore and headed to the car to wait. Jacob came with me.

Agreed to head to Murrell’s Inlet to get some lunch with the family before heading our separate ways. The girls couldn’t check into their Myrtle Beach resort until 3pm anyway. Because Drunken Jack’s wasn’t yet open, we headed across the street to a gift shop. Spent too much time there. Mindy bought a few things. Headed across the street to Drunken Jack’s again near 1050am. Seated us even though they weren’t technically opened until 11am.

Enjoyed some lunch – more seafood for me, a fish sandwich. Proud to say, we’d eaten nothing from a chain while on vacation, and mostly seafood for me. Finished lunch around noon. Gave the kids and Mindy a hug and wished Jacob a safe flight home Friday afternoon. Wouldn’t see him until Monday or Tuesday evening in CMH. The girls headed with the kids to Myrtle Beach while David and I headed to Lake Wateree. The plan was to be there before 4pm so we could pick-up his newly acquired boat at the nearby marina repair shop. Brother Tommy and Wally were driving down too, and they expected to arrive sometime near 4pm as well.

We made good time heading west with a few brief jogs to the north. Arrived at the Wateree marina around 340pm. David headed inside to settle up for the work on his new used runabout while I waited in the car. We hitched the boat to the Pilot and headed off to David’s lake house, just another mile or two up the road.

Tommy & Wally were already there but had only recently arrived. They were out back on the dock awaiting our arrival. We’d been in touch via text for the past couple hours. Took a while to unload all our beach gear. And because David was showing Tommy around the place, I carried in most of it.  By the time we finished I was beat from the heat.

We hung out inside for a while relaxing until  I received a call from our home security alarm company sharing that they received another phone line cut alarm. Funny, I had just been thinking about that over the past couple days. At about the same time, I started experiencing issues with my cell phone. Inexplicably stopped working. Long story short, ended up being an issue after paring with David’s JBL Charge 2 wireless speaker. After an hour of calls with VZW HD we figured it out on our own. Once the pairing was torn down, my phone started working again. Weird!

Wasn’t too much later when launched David’s new boat from the nearby boat launch on June Creek. David headed straight to his dock before we all headed out for its maiden voyage. We sipped a few beers and enjoyed leftovers for dinner – the same fare we had Wednesday evening at the beach – chicken, black beans and rice. Delicious again. All week, David and I had loosely discussed partying like rock stars Thursday night. But in reality, we did anything but. All very tame. I guess we can blame Wally’s presence for that. J

Friday, July 17 - Retreat

Despite and rainless forecast, I woke to overcast skies. Thinking I was up near 720am, which for years has my natural rise time barring any outlandish drinking/partying the night before. David was already up, of course, always is. After some coffee, I headed out on a run. Ran to River Rd. and back, and did so at a decent pace and without completely depleting my energy stores. Will all the hills, it’s a true test of my health and endurance.  I’m in better shape than the year prior when those same hills kicked my ever lovin’ arse! J

After an early morning boat ride fruitlessly looking for bald eagles, we spent most of the day playing/swimming off of the dock. After a few beers David wanted to rearrange the plastic puzzle dock pieces he has to better accommodate his growing fleet of water toys (pontoon, runabout, and 2 jet skis). It wasn’t a pleasant experience having David curtly barking orders at us, but we eventually achieved the desired results.

We were expecting the girls to arrive around 4pm after dropping Jacob at the Myrtle Beach airport around noon. Mindy and I were texting back and forth until she sent what seemed like a rude comment. No more of that! I guess that’s the danger of texts … context.

They arrived near 430pm. By then, we’d had plenty of time in the sun and plenty of beers. After a brief rest, we got cleaned up and pontooned to dinner at the Retreat. Packed house and only one dock space available for mooring. We enjoyed a beer from the covered patio before our table for seven was ready.

Good meal! Always is. Mindy and I both enjoyed tips and grits. Lovely sunset on the drive there. Dark for the drive back. Good times!

Saturday, July 18 – Pork Butt

Another good, hot and sunny run, but this time the opposite direction, to and past Suede Ln. Tommy, Wally, David and I took off around 930am to fuel the jet skis and pontoon at Beaver Creek marina. Partied from the dock most of the day, taking off in the jet skis a time or two. Good times! Had just a couple brews before moving on to water. Got lots and lots of sun, probably too much. It was very warm and sunny, just what us Ohioans ordered.

David smoke a couple pork butts beginning early that morning. We picked at the smaller of the two from the dock. He pulled off the larger, more meaty butt later for dinner.

Headed in too cool off and possibly nap around 430pm. About the same time, clouds and an eventual storm moved in. While Mindy slept, I watched TV. It poured rain. Could hear it beating against the roof and windows. Lasted something less than an hour, but still a lot of rain in a short amount of time.

The 2nd pork butt was exceptionally tender and delicious.  I pieced on it after my nap and shower. By then the sun was out though about to set. David and I went out to check his new boat since we knew the bilge pump wasn’t working. A whole lot of water on board and enough to have the lower half of the engine block submerged. The only way to drain would be to pull it out. David promptly drove over to the June Creek boat launch where I met him with the trailer.

Said it would only go slightly above idle the whole way. Uh-oh! Once on the trailer, we let it drain from the ramp for a solid 10 minutes. We took it back to his place. Enjoyed a Jack & Coke while watching some TV – a program highlighting session musicians from the 60s/70s. Pretty much one group of musicians played on just about all the hits from that era. Who knew? We also watched a foodie program from New Orleans.

Sunday, July 19 – Last full day on the lake

Another run to River Rd and back. I was out a little earlier so the sun had little impact. Still plenty hot and humid though. Temps and humidity both above 80%.

The days plan included going on a eagle watch boat cruise and then lunch (hamburgers) at one of the lake Wateree marinas with great burgers. I was skeptical about seeing a bald eagle. After all, this was our fifth visit and we’ve yet to see one. But see one, we did. Kind of hard to distinguish and eagle from other local birds of prey with the naked eye, but David’s zoom lens doesn’t lie. Gorgeous bird!

I drove the boat allowing David to relax and enjoy a little time with his wife. Hot & sunny. Bella and Wally tubed all the way to the marina, where we docked and enjoyed lunch. Yum, yum!

Back at the lake house, we played on the jet skis. I didn’t drink but one beer all day. David and I pulled the runabout out of the lake again as a chance of thunderstorms loomed on the horizon. We knew it would hit if we left it in the water. Just how things work. Of course it never did rain.

David cooked up a New Orleans style dinner – crawfish, corn on the cob, tater boil. He & Tommy partook big. The rest of us enjoyed a nice, fresh salad.  The plan was to head home Monday morning. Gone from home for 10 days. Was looking forward to some downtime at home.

Monday, July 20 – Home

Up early. Thinking it was near 630am. Ran to and past Suede Ln again. Nice run, and early enough that the sun didn’t play too large a role. Mindy & Anita stayed on top of laundry during our entire stay, which made packing for home easy. Clothes wise, we didn’t bring that much anyway.

Tommy left a note in the visitors book. Did a group photo before heading out. Had a great time both at the beach and lake, a much needed break from the recent stress and ugly Ohio weather. Hit the road near 930am.

Perhaps the easiest drive home ever. No weather issues and no traffic snarls. And while GPS had us taking 64 to Rt 35 west , we defied its direction and headed further north on I-77 to Rt 33. Lovely drive towards home. Sunny when we arrived very near 6pm, or 8.5 hours. A couple hundred miles from home Mindy and I discussed our arrival. I suggested we stop first at home to unload and then I would stay behind to mow the lawn while she and Bella went after Eiknarf. Our lawn hadn’t been cut for 11 days. I knew it would be long.

The lawn wasn’t as out of control as I expected, but it was wet, long and lush. In fact, it looked more like spring lush rather than late summer lush. I was in shorts and mowing within 20 minutes of arriving home. I push mowed the entire front and most of the back to avoid tractor tire ruts.

Looked good by my finish. Of course Mindy and the kids were back by the time I finished. Jacob was home then, too. Jimaken dropped him after soccer practice. After a shower, the family headed off to Barley’s. Nice to be home and nice to have a familiar beer and wings. Yum!

July 6 - 9

Monday, July 6 -  Lack of Recall ?

Exercise, stretch, run, work - the absolutes.

Tuesday, July 7 - About Those Teeth

Dental appointment - 6 month check-up. For whatever the reason, seems my biannual dental appointments more often than not proceed a vacation, and this summer was no exception. New hygienist. I guess Heather quit and moved north to Michigan. New girl couldn't be but 22 years of age. Tiny, fragile thing. Seemed to do a decent job.

Wednesday, July 8 - Good Beer & Fish

Wednesday date night at Wolf's Ridge. Enjoyed a couple beers in the tap room and then dinner at the restaurant bar. Very, very good.

Thursday, July 9 - Last Work Day ahead of 17 straight days off

Vacation couldn’t come soon enough. Thursday, July 9th was my last work day through July 27th. And as it turned out, I participated in an all-day training class 9-530pm. No surprise, it rained on and off for most of the day. Nothing but rain this summer. Despite a drenched lawn, after finishing up with work, I headed out to cut the lawn one last time before leaving town for 10 days. My goal was to prevent coming home to a wheat field lawn after a 10 day vacation.

While I took care of the lawn, Mindy and the kids took Eiknarf to mawmaws. I believe we headed to Roosters for dinner when they got home.

Comfest, ESMZ, Rhinegeist, Boating, Big Bang & Yellow Springs - June 27 - July 5

My Reality - June 27 - July 5

Saturday, June 27th - Comfest & Rain
Went to Comfest with Mindy and Glenn. Cloudy, rainy day in the low/mid 70's. Seems like it rains on Comfest most  years. Spent an hour or so at the Freshwater House across from the park with family and friends. Mindy bought a vase and dress at the festival. We each enjoyed a beer from Comfest and then some of the electric lemonade put together by Freshwater guys (vodka, lemonade, and beer). Stopped at Chipotle on the way home to pick-up food for kids.

Sunday, June 28th

Mindy and I headed to Cincy for the ESMZ concert. Left town near noon Sunday. Glenn agreed to watch the kids overnight. As forecasted, the skies cleared the closer we got to Cincy. By the time we arrived there were nothing but blue skies. Yeah!

Had reservation at Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown. Unfortunately, we had navigation guide to the wrong Hampton Inn. They quickly set us straight and gave us rough instructions on how to get there. Just a few miles down the road in the heart of downtown Over the Rhine. Old Cincy Enquirer member. Gorgeous and newly renovated. Nice!

Checked in near 3pm and after brief rest in the room, we took off on foot for the Rhinegeist brewery in the old Over the Rhine neighborhood. Best guess, about a two mile walk, and through a very scary part of town. Had I known it was that run down I would've called for an Uber ride. We made it safely and without incident.

Cool, unique brewery. Old Morelein bottling plant and over 100 years old. We enjoyed just one beer and a pretzel. Bought t-shirts and a pint glass too. Opted to Uber back to hotel. Only $5 and much safer. :)

Spent little time in the room before heading off to dinner at an Nicholson's Pub, just one block over to the east. Very cool atmosphere, lots of microbrews, and decent food. Shared crab cakes and a salad. Back to the room after dinner but only long enough to get organized for the EZMZ concert. Grabbed camp chairs from car, too. Called Uber for a ride. About $5 again. 4 blocks up and 4 blocks east.

Horseshoe Casino lawn show. Once inside, we quickly happened upon Hayden working the Love Hope & Strength booth. Mindy completed paperwork to donate bone marrow. I'm too old (55>). Enjoyed a few canned Rhinegeist Truth IPAs. Two opening acts, the first being a subset of ESMZ. Looking back, that was actually foreshadowing what was to come. The 2nd act, Bright Lights Social Hour from Austin, TX, they were really tight.

ESMZ didn't come on until just after 10pm. Alex Ebert promptly shared that he was battling laryngitis. Great music, bad show. He talked through most tunes, played only 7 songs and abbreviated all of them. Mumbled and fumbled his way through the entire show. Sounded stoned out of his mind to me. Felt ripped off. Show ended promptly at 11pm, deflecting the blame to Cincy noise ordinance. Yeah, right!

We opted to walk back to hotel. By then I was starving but little was open just after 11pm in the middle of downtown on a Sunday night. Ate an apple that I brought from home before going to sleep.

Monday, June 29th

Woke at 7am to cloudy skies and heavy rain. Ugh! Quickly out of bed an into my running clothes. Needed to be back to the room and ready for training by 830am. Rain in the downpour in lower downtown and then around Great American Ballpark. Nice run despite the rain. Soaked to the bone. Before heading back to the room, poured two cups of coffee.

Had time before class. Hurried through a shower before setting up for training. At first break I headed down for the complimentary breakfast. First eggs since late April, early May. Good! Continued with work training until 11am, or checkout time. Still pouring rain.

Rained so hard at times on our drive home that we considered pulling over. Never did. Dark gray clouds as far as the eye could see. Rain, rain, rain. Arrived home around 1pm or about an hour ahead of our stated ETA. Glenn was there prepping for his flight home. I agreed to drive him to the airport. Wanted to depart the house near 330pm. Forgot to share that brother Bob called my cell phone at 355am while in Cincy from Dad's home phone. Freaked me out seeing an incoming call from Dad! Missed first call. Picked up 2nd attempt. Worse yet, he sounded like dad a little too. I was double freaked! Turned out, he had his wires crossed with Glenn. Thought he was to pick him up at 4am for airport ride. Wow!

Poured rain all afternoon. Left for the airport near 330pm. Drop went smoothly. Glenn was in town one day short of 4 weeks - his longest stay since moving out of town summer 1985.

Mindy made dinner, though can't recall just what. Somber mood throughout the house, getting back to normalcy after a whirlwind 6 weeks - dad ill, dying, Glenn, David and Anita visiting, Ashley's wedding.

Tuesday, June 30th

Back to a somewhat normal routine. Worked across town. Chip in my windshield on drive home.

Wednesday, July 1

Last of 13 straight work days of training. Land Grant for date night. Extremely tired - mentally exhasuted.

Thursday, July 2

Worked from home. Picked the boat up Thursday mid-afternoon after first paying a visit to the credit union where I picked up a check which I promptly deposited at my bank. Took an hour or so after normal working hours to prep the boat for the lake on Friday.

Mindy, the kids and I went to Rooster's for dinner. First time dining there in many, many months. Good eats! Hit the spot. Enjoyed two Great Lakes Burning River Pale Ales. Jacob and I shared 20 wings hot.

.
Friday, July 3

Alum Creek boating day - first of the season.

Jacob & Bella each invited a friend. Jacob invited Joel (good kid), and Bella invited Elaina (good kid, too). We headed up around 1130am. Neighbor Kenny and family went along too with their new boat. We convoyed up and went into the camp ground boat launch, citing brother Bob's campsite - F7. No problems.

Out on the water by 1215pm. Boat ran almost flawlessly. Very happy about that. They sky was overcast but the threat of rain almost nil. We met up with Bob and family in the route 36/37 swim cover. Don't think the temp made it to 80 degrees, and the water was outright cold. According to Bob, only 74 degrees. After an hour or two of boating fun, it rained, and at times pretty hard. Figures! We still had a grand time. All the kids had a ball.

A second round of tubing took place from 430-630pm. Mindy got in some skiing too. Of note, Bella & Elaina might've pulled off the most incredible tube ride ever. Elaina launched high above the tube topping out near 8-10' in the air after hitting an enormous wave. Bella, meanwhile, launched frontwards into a front flip just seconds later. Thankfully, both were A-OK and laughed uncontrollably.

Pulled out and headed home near 7pm. Once the kids' friend were picked up by their parents, Mindy & I set out for Sideswipe brewing. Sadly, though, they were closed as of 7pm for Red, White and Boom. We opted instead for Barley's where we enjoyed some hummus, wings and beer. Headed home after watching the fireworks on the big screen TV.

Saturday, July 4th

Celebrating with Kent & Kurt and then the Cubra's. First time making it to Kent & Kurt's 4th of July party. Beautiful home, Great beer, good people. Hung out for a couple hours. Left for Picktown near 630pm. Picked up a few complimentary Domino's pizza's from Tom's new Picktown store on our way. We left a hefty tip. Great food, friends at the Cubra's. The fireworks were incredible and fun. Ask Bob C. about his homemade cannons. Awesome!

Drive home afterwards was a beast. Traffic snarls everywhere. Took more than an hour to get home - about 75 minutes.

Sunday, July 5th

Mindy and I headed to Yellow Springs for the first time this year. Great hike in Glen Helen. Took a different trail out (east of the river). Had lunch at Peaches for the first time. Good beer. Decent food. Stopped at Young's Dairy for ice cream on the way home. Delicious but practically put me in a comma.

Funeral & Wedding - The Other Side - June 8 - 26

Monday, June 8

I slept poorly and woke for good around 430am. Like most June days, my thoughts turned to dad at nearly every turn, though I suppose that's completely normal. I exercised and ran like any other day, and planned to go into the office for the first time in more than a week. I wanted to tell my boss face to face rather than sending an email. Brother Bob sent a text early that he had made arrangements to meet with Schoedinger Funeral home at 2pm.

It was Mindy's last day of school with students, though Tuesday would be her official last day. I think the normalcy of being with her students helped elevate her mood some.

I waited for about an hour to tell my boss of dad's passing. He was on a call and busy with work matters prior. He told me to take as much time as I needed and emphasized the fact that I had 3 bereavement days to use too. I worked at the office until 1pm or so. From there I headed to Macy's to pick-up my new suit that was due back from alterations that day. Took a while to locate someone to help me. Also bought a new black belt.

Arrived at Schoedinger a couple minutes early. I wasn't at all looking forward to the planning process, the emotions still so raw. Glenn was out east doing something during the day. Somewhat late in the day I gave him the Schoedinger meeting details. Wasn't sure he'd make it back in time for the meeting but he did. He met Bob and I there about 10-12 minutes after we'd gotten started. I was very glad he made it.

We wrote a simple obituary, picked a tribute/memorial card, casket, vault, etc. We left there after 2 hours with lots more work to do in a relatively short amount of time. Among the tasks, Glenn agreed to write a tribute piece, I agreed to pull together some tasteful music and help create the video photo memorial as well photo boards. All that might not sound like a lot but it is, especially given that it all needed to be completed by Tuesday at 2pm in order to be ready for calling hours on Wednesday 2-4pm & again from 6-8pm. The funeral would be the following day, Thursday at 10am.

Tuesday

Up very early. Couldn't sleep. Exercise, meditation, stretch and run were completed by 8am. I was more than a little stressed with the 2pm deadline and so much work to completed. I worked on the music and photo DVD while Glenn did the writing and the photo collage. Meanwhile, it was Mindy's last day of school.

Turned out, we had to make two trips to Schoedinger because the music CD I made wouldn't play on their equipment. My music is in MP4 audio files. I returned home and converted into ACC format and downloaded it to my old iTouch which I left in the care of the Schoedinger after confirming that it played over their sound system.
Felt a sense of relief having the prep work behind us. Glenn and I stopped by dad's place on the way home in hopes of finding a few more artifacts and photos for the calling hours and funeral. We found a several more good photos for display. We also grabbed one of dad's signature blue puff vests he always wore. Foolishly assumed he had only one, but within eyeshot there were at least three. :) In addition. we found a couple tribute plaques for his fallen dogs, Shep and Lou. Oh, we also grabbed a large can of WD-40 to display proudly, too. Dad used it to fix everything, much the same way the Greek fixed everything with Windex. :)

Wednesday June 9

I woke early and to be quite honest, I was very nervous about the day ahead. Exercise, meditate, stretch and run as normal. And while the official calling hours weren't until 2pm, the immediate family was invited to be there at 1pm. That was our goal. We also had plans to host most of the family at our house between calling hours. In preparation, I made a run to Giant Eagle where I picked up all sorts of eats and drinks. Mindy insisted we'd have lots of food provided by others, but still.

For starters, David & Anita sent a Honey Baked ham and cheesecake. Thanks Danita! While out, I also got my car washed. Just helped make me feel a little better. Gloria was at the house soon after my return. She brought lots of goodies too: sloppy joe's, brownies, etc. Mindy was right. We had lots and lots of food. There are a lot of people that love  and care about us.

We left for the Schoedinger near 1245pm. The entire Schoedinger staff was phenomenal - kind and ready to accommodate and serve. As expected, the initial view of dad brought a waterfall of emotion and tears for most of us. He looked good, and certainly better than he had for the last couple weeks in the hospital. The family hour passed quickly and soon friends and acquaintances arrived to pay their last respects.

It's a true shame that it often takes calling hours/funerals to bring out family, friends, and acquaintances that haven't been seen for years, and in some cases even decades. And dad's calling hours were no exception. There were far too many to mention, but believe me, there were plenty and from all walks of life. The evening calling hours brought a packed house. I was very happy to see some of my closest peeps. It certainly helps with the healing/grieving process.

Thursday June 10 - a funeral (Gloria's 81st bday)

The previous 3 days and again Thursday, temps soared into the 90s coupled with high humidity. I was up near 6am, and completed exercise and a run by 730am. I wore my new black suit for the first time. However, because it was so warm and humid, I opted to skip a white shirt and tie in favor of a handsome polo. Left for the funeral home near 845am. Just before heading out the door, I grabbed perhaps my favorite, most worn running ballcap that certainly has my DNA all over it. I planned to send it with dad in his casket for eternity.

For the past couple days, Mindy had been working on a eulogy. She, brother Bob and Uncle Kenny asked to speak. Having done it before, I thought I might do so as well, but the emotions were just to raw. I opted to listen to the others and eulogize dad on my own while running. Mindy added a few items for me.

The pastor delivering the official eulogy did a superb job and both Bob & Mindy brought tears and laughter from the entire room. Uncle Kenny did a great job too, reading a poem he found in grandma Wright's bible and telling a couple brief stories honoring dad.

With 5 Wright boys, we needed a sixth to serve as a pallbearer. We collectively agreed to ask cousin Brian, aunt Char's eldest son. We watched as they closed the casket, seeing for the first time ever how they lower the body deeper into the casket before closing the lid. The most lasting impression left on me was the shadow falling across dad's face as the lid came down, me seeing his lovely face for the last time ever.

The procession to the cemetery took us through the boughs of the westside; Broad St to Hague, Hague to Mound, Mound to Harmon, and Harmon into Greenlawn cemetery. Grave side service delivered by the pastor. Fittingly, he used a flashilight as a prop and metaphor brilliantly. We suggested that folks stay for the lowering of the casket into the vault and ultimately into the ground. I asked if I could toss in the first handful of dirt. Soon others followed suit, including all the great grand kids. It was sweet. There was a funny moment too, when grandson Landon suggested that if we tossed in dirt handful by handful that "it would take all day". That brought laughter to everyone. Dad would've loved it too. Another funny moment was when grandson Wally (aka Matthew) opted to pick-up a large rock with his handful of dirt. I had to advise that he not toss it in.

Brother Glenn and cousin Mike opted to stay behind to watch the full burial while the rest of us headed out. Mindy and I headed back to the funeral home to pick-up the photos, flowers, and music. Char stopped by too, to pick-up a couple of the flower baskets. We headed home for a quick change into comfy, casual clothing then off to brother Bob's for the wake.

With it being so warm - about 93 - the kids looked forward to swimming in Bob's pool. Out of town family members hung with us at Bob's for a couple hours before getting on the road for home. We hung out till 6pm or so. Mindy invited Bob and his family to join us at our house for dessert. Truth is, I could've fallen asleep then. I was completely exhausted and had to work on Friday. At home, we dug into the yummy food that neighbor Terri made for us: a giant tub of homemade rigatoni, salad and rolls.

We hung out for a couple more hours. Later, or just after Bobby and his family headed home, Chrissy and Terri came over. They were still hanging with Glenn when Mindy and I headed for bed.

Friday June 12th represented the other side of life without dad. I did my usual routine and worked from home just like most other Friday's. And as hard as it was, it was time to switch into wedding mode with her big event coming the following Saturday, June 20th. We had lots of details and loose ends to tie up leading up to the big day.

That evening we took the kids and Glenn to Barley's and later Sideswipe. It was a welcome return to some level of normalcy.

Saturday, June 13th

After a run, the whole family headed over to dad's place to begin the clean-up process, both of the lawn and garage. We met there near 10am. Glenn opted to man the tractor while the rest of us worked in the garage or around the flower beds. I dug up the old withered rose bush I have admired for years, and the same one that dad encourage me to take a year or so ago. I also dug up a baby oak tree that was taking root aside the foundation. Its leaves were yellow, apparently lacking important nutrients, likely iron.

There were many laughs as we cleaned the garage. Dad has so many tools it's not funny. We worked for about 5 hours, which proved to be a very cathartic experience.

We attended two parties that evening; neighbor Pat & Lisa's daughter Alanna's graduation party, and then later, neighbor Kenny's 40th bday celebration. Both were a good time. Both parties offered brisket as an entree. Pat prepared his own. Chrissy got theirs from City Barbeque. Both delicious.

We headed home just as Kenny's party was getting heated up. Following us home were Ben & Ryan. Nephew Joe was at the house too. The five of us hung out for the next few hours. Glenn joined us a little later. Had a really nice time. Ben, Ryan and Joe spent the night.

Sunday, June 14th

Sunday was the day we sat aside to celebrate all the Thompson family June birthdays: Lindey, Joe, Jeff and mamaw. We did so at Jodie & Larry's place. That was a nice time and another event that helped us return to a somewhat normal routine. We were there for about 3 hours.

Once home, Mindy and I headed over to dad's place to see how Glenn was doing on the lawn. We spent a few minutes looking through more of dad's things and I even took a couple minutes to repair the toilet tank. Before heading home, I picked out one of dad's old familiar flannel shirts. Weather permitting, I thought i might wear it to the planned Father's Day bonfire the following Sunday.

Monday - Friday June 15 - 19

I was scheduled to be in a work related training class each morning for the next 13 business days beginning Monday, June 15th. In kind, to accommodate the training, I planned to work from home. The weather forecast for the week ahead, including Ashley's wedding day, called for lots and lots of rain.  With the exception of a 3 or 4 day stretch during the second week of June (6/9-6/11) it's been a very cloudy, rainy late spring, early summer.

Despite the raining forecast, each day offered brief moments of sunshine. Tuesday evening, immediately after dinner, Mindy and I headed to the Grandview Yard Giant Eagle Market District to purchase the alcohol for Ashley's wedding reception. Dropped around $400. Between the flowers and booze, we easily saved a ton (perhaps $1500) by doing it ourselves.

Wedding flowers arrived Wednesday via FedEx and UPS. Mindy took ownership of making table arrangements and  bouquets. Thank you dear!

Thursday David & Anita came into town arriving near 430pm. Just ahead of their arrival, Mindy and I visited Big Al, Kelly's father who has been ill since late winter and has taken a turn for the worse. We visited with him for an hour or so. We went to Joe's Rusty Bucket for dinner.

Friday was wedding rehearsal and venue decorating day, though not until 4pm. After training and between rain showers, I managed to get the lawn cut.

David & Anita opted to help us, join us at the wedding rehearsal. Mostly cloudy day with just a few very brief smatterings of sunshine. From the Tall Timbers outdoor wedding venue, we watched a coyote carry off and tear into his prey, likely a bunny. Most of the below 10's wanted to go after it. We called them back for fear of attack.

The rehearsal left Mindy & I a bit concerned mostly because some of the kids were a bit unruly and a couple participants absent or seemingly more concerned with puffing their cigarettes. But we got through it. Afterwards, about 30 of us met up at The Hickory House for the rehearsal dinner hosted by Steven's father and step mom, Steven & Angela.

Enjoyed a beer from the bar while awaiting seating. The venue was fine but ill equipped to handle a crowd as large as ours. The service was good and so was the food. All in all, a good time had by all. Thanks Steven/Angela.

Saturday, June 20 - Ashley & Steven's Big Wet Wedding Day

The forecast called for rain all day. I ran in the rain around 8am. No big deal. Noticed a few Bob Evans gift card backs lying in neighbor lawns. When I got back home I discovered Glenn fretting over the fact that someone rifled through Dad's minivan, not stealing a handful of dad's gift cards, but also the $200 Macy's gift card he purchased the day before from Macy's. Apparently one of the doors doesn't lock automatically with the others. Sad!

Despite the ugly forecast, Mindy held out hope that the rain would go into hibernation between 1030 & 130pm. That didn't happen. Mindy and Bella left for the wedding around 9am or an hour or more before the rest of us. I had to help Jacob, Rocky, and Landon get ready (tie their ties). Glenn rode with David and Anita. The boys rode with me.

Poured rain not only during the drive out, but for the duration of the afternoon. I didn't tell anyone, but not only did the forecast call for a lack of sunshine, but also the rainiest forecast of the year with up to 2" forecasted through the afternoon. Lucky for us, the Tall Timbers venue had a plan "B", which had the ceremony moved indoors in the same hall as the reception. The decision had been made around 930am and reception slightly altered to host the exchange of the nuptials.

I must say, walking daughter Ashley down the aisle was one of my life's highlights and an absolute honor. Sadly an honor I thought  might never happen given the life choices of each daughter. The wedding went far better than the rehearsal despite the altered plan. The Tall Timbers staff did a remarkable job, not only in pulling off plan "B' but making sure everyone was where they needed to be.

The little added touches: the homespun flowers, Sean the keyboardist, and brother Tommy singing went off as planned. The only thing missing was the presence of Ashley's two grandfather's, who only a few weeks prior, both planned to be there - Grandpa Glenn and Grandfather Al. Lindsey honored grandfather Al in her maid of honor speech, and I honored dad during my toast to the bride. I also dedicated the first song, Brandi Carlile, The Story. For me, the perfect song to kick off the dancing.

Fun was had by all. Though not the official wedding photographer, a special thanks goes out to brother Glenn who took 1600+ photos with my Canon D70. I'm sure there will be some gems amongst them. Can't wait to view and edit.

Mindy, David, Anita, Tommy & Wally, and Glenn hung out home for a spell. Mindy still quite buzzed from the reception ventured off to neighbor Pat's where we knew he, Lisa, Joe & Peggy were hanging out. We eventually joined them, wheeling a cooler full of beer over with us. And then, after hanging out for a while, Mindy walked home to fetch some of our musical instruments so we could do a jam session. A good time was had by all. Pat left briefly to fetch a big batch of wings from Minelli's. He said by accident he recently discovered that their wings are really good. He was right, they are delicious. Thinking it was near 1130pm when we headed for home.

Sunday, June 21st - Father's Day bonfire yard party at dad's

Slept later than I have in several days - weeks maybe. Not up until about 815am. Very happy to see sunshine! After a run and showers, Mindy, me, David and Anita headed off for brunch at CBC. Glenn opted out, instead heading over to dad's to further prepare the yard for that evening's yard party.

Brunch was nice. Think it was about 1130am when we arrived. I had chicken and waffles. Just OK. Enjoyed a couple mimosa's too. After brunch I suggested we make a quick run by dad's grave which is no more than a couple miles from CBC. Took a while to locate the exact spot. I believe he's in section #124 and along a thin paved trail leading towards a mausoleum, and then further off and behind it there's a large broadcast tower peering high above the surrounding skyline.

We weren't there too long. Much of the backfill has settled, so partly to the recent heavy rains. I'm told they'll address all of that. After leaving the cemetery, we headed straight to Tuttle Mall where I returned my wedding tuxedo. From there we headed home. Pretty sure that Mindy and Anita napped while David and I loaded up our gear (canopy, coolers, chairs, etc) for dad's bonfire. We headed over in the heat of the afternoon, but not before a quick stop at the Circle K for ice. Bobby and Glenn were already there, Bobby setting up, Glenn mowing the lawn. Tommy arrived just before we left again for home. Glenn and Bob headed home for showers ahead of the shindig.

Headed over to dad's place again around 345pm. David and I drove separate from the others so we could yet another pit stop at the drive-thru for a small bag of ice.

Best recall is that we hadn't had an event like this at dad's place since October 2004 when me & Dodie convinced dad to host his annual Halloween party. Hard to believe it's been almost 11 years. Great turnout for the bonfire / cookout. All the Wright boys and their significant others, kids, etc. Friends and family members too, including Uncle Kenny and aunt Char. Uncle Frank, Dodie and Keri, and Connie were there as well. Must have been 30-35 folks in total. We had more than enough meat, and plenty of side dishes to feed everyone.

We had volleyball setup too, just like the old days (early 80s and forward). I played a little, but mostly the youngest generation of gkids. As late afternoon turned into late evening we prepped for a bonfire. Most of the kindling and logs were wet from the recent rains, but we refused to be deterred. Meanwhile, Uncle Frank offered up his delectable dessert to a handful of family members, and brother Charles shared a few different varieties of moonshine. Just about the time we were struggling to get the bonfire going, we got word that Charles and Glenn were out of sorts back in dad's woods. Some things never change. Brings to mind the 80s when brother Charles was busy corrupting my girls in the woods with beer and cigarettes - and who knows what else. Once Mindy caught wind of the current shenanigans, she opted to head home with Jacobella, no wanting to risk them hearing, seeing their uncles buzzed out of their minds. Anita went home with her. David stuck around with me. By then it had to be near 10-1030pm, which was about the time that Darwin showed up after spending the evening calling Bingo at the church.

Remaining for the best part of the bonfire was me, David, Tommy, Wally ( who was asleep in a camp chair) Misty, Bunky, and Connie. Glenn and Charles were there too, but by then lying under the stars sleeping off their buzz up by the house. Tisk tisk!

Connie hung out with me, Tommy, Darwin and David until about 1am. We had a nice time around the fire. After checking on Glenn and Charles, David and I headed for home. Got into bed near 120am.

Monday - Friday, June 22-26

I was up around 615am despite not sleeping so well. After calisthenics, I felt pretty decent though no doubt still a bit under slept. I needed to get a move on in order to finish a 4 mile run and be ready at my desk for 830am training. David and Anita were up preparing to depart for home by my return, which had to be near 810am.

I woke Mindy with a cup of coffee at her bedside so she could bid our friends farewell. We said our goodbyes around 820am. Soon David & Anita were on the road for home. Joined my training class which went a full 4 hours. Immediately after, I headed over to dad's to retrieve the rest of our bonfire stuff: canopy, portable table, etc. Took down and organized Bob and Tom's stuff too. Picked up a lot of trash as well. Didn't want to leave a mess.

Glenn was up and about before I left. Went inside to chat with him just before heading home. He looked like hell, and still hungover from Sunday evenings antics. Encouraged him to head back to the house for a nap and shower.

Worked the rest of the afternoon. Didn't have anything major planned for the evening.

Ended up having four straight days without any rain (Sunday thru Wednesday), a very welcome addition to our early summer. June will go down as one of the cloudiest, rainiest in recent memory, though the last two summers have been rainy as well, but if memory serves, not until a bit later in the season. Two summer ago (summer 2013) we had almost two weeks of raining weather surrounding the 4th of July. And last year the rainy weather followed us to Ashville NC in mid July where one would typically expect lots of sunshine and heat. Instead, it was cool and rainy for the entire stay. It wasn't until we headed onto David and Anita's place the following week that the rain and cool temps moved on & out.

Thursday ushered in more clouds and rain, Ugh!!! Will it ever stop? Ran the usual 4 miles but this time in the rain

Dad's Passing - June 1 - 7

Final Days - Losing Dad

Glenn O. Wright
Dec 19, 1935 - June 7, 2015 - 5:07pm EDT

As May turned into June, dad's prognosis quickly deteriorated, so much so that we let brother Glenn know that he should come home if he wanted to spend some time with dad before he passed. He wasted little time making those arrangements after his company's HR department let him know that he was free to use FMLA to cover an extended absence.

I picked Glenn up at the airport around 530pm on Tuesday, June 2nd. We drove straight to the hospital and much to our surprise, Dad was as lucid as he'd been since taking a turn for the worse a week or so prior. He was awake and aware of everyone's presence in his room, though still struggling to communicate due to being intubated. The following day, Wednesday, June 3, dad was perhaps his best day. This was also the day that dad was able to complete his will in the presence of Ben, an attorney.

We met with the doctors again in an attempt to get everyone on the same page relative to dad's prognosis. The family felt like we were getting mixed messages from countless doctors. And a couple of the doctors clearly had no idea what they were talking about. We met with the thoracic surgeon, the ICU director, the palliative care doctor, and the ICU nurse. It was becoming increasingly clear that the likelihood of dad getting better and going home was next to nill. Instead, the question soon became when to consider extubating. By then he was existing via four tubes: one for breathing, another for feeding, another for peeing, and lastly, one for excrement.

None of us were willing to give up as long as dad wanted to fight, and he didn't have a DNR order. We made painstaking efforts to try and ascertain his wishes during the few lucid opportunities over the course of the next few days. Ugh! it was hard. Despite our despair and heartache, there were many loving, funny, memorable moments.

As much hope as Tuesday and Wednesday offered, dad's condition faded quickly. Friday and Saturday, June 5th & 6th were by far his worst days yet. Saturday, the Wright boys met privately and decided that Monday, June 8 would be the day we extubated. Despite no signs pointing to a successful extubation (he couldn't go even 5 minutes during several practice rounds), hope remained that he would surprise everyone and start breathing on his own.

All of the Wright boys, Char, cousin Brian, mom, Ashley and Steven were at the hospital on Sunday, June 7. Dad was out of it for much of the morning, opening his eyes for just a few brief moments. I can't recall if it was Saturday or early Sunday that dad gave the cut sign. I won't kid you, there were a few tense moments in the hallways as we discussed the right thing to do. Ultimately we agreed to extubate that afternoon after discussing his prognosis with the ICU doctor. He gave him nearly zero chance of getting any better even while intubated. He also reiterated his belief that dad would last seconds, maybe minutes breathing on his own.

I think it was 310pm when we extubated. It was difficult. You could feel everyone in the room pulling for dad to breathe on his own. The ICU nurse gave dad meds to help him relax and also some to dull any pain. His breathing started off shallow and laborious but seemed to get better as the initial minutes became an hour. Mentally and physically exhausted, I leaned back in my chair and took a nap. I woke after 20-30 minutes to learn that dad had defied the odds so much so that they were making arrangements for him to be moved to the Palliative care wing, at least that's what they were telling us. But just when a few family members stepped out to notify others that he was breathing better and being moved, brother Glenn, who had been at his bedside holding his hand since extubation, shared that his breathing was becoming not only shallow, but also further and further between breaths. Those words will likely stick with me for the rest of my days. Immediately I snapped out of my stuper and rushed to dad's bedside. There we collectively held dad's hand while witnessing him take his last breaths. At 507pm he took his last breath.

*********************************           A.D.        *********************************

After taking care of the necessary paper work, we hugged several of the ICU nurses that took care of dad during his 16 day stay. It must've been near 6pm when we left the hospital for home. The only way I can only describe the feeling as numb and lifeless. There were bouts of tears interweaved with bouts of staring blankly off into space.

The kids were with Jimaken for the weekend. Mindy told them of grandpa's passing as soon as they got home. It's safe to say that profound sadness befell everyone. Some or another Mindy managed to muster the energy to whip up a simple dinner of pasta and red sauce. Dinner was mostly quiet.

After dinner Mindy and I slipped out onto the deck where we talked little and pondered the near term future without dad. Looking back, I believe I was in shock. I could barely muster the energy to talk, walk, or even cry. Around 8pm I suggested we go on a long walk. I needed something to center us ... me. Mindy agreed to join me. She even invited Jacob to come along but he declined, at least initially.

We walked to and through the park where we were eventually met by Jacob on his long board. We played there for a few before continuing on our walk with Jacob following loosely on his board. He eventually went off on his own, presumably back towards home while we continued walking and talking. It was the best medicine ever. The pain and hurt were ever present but the long walk did both of us a lot of good.
