Final Rest
I woke probably three or four times through the night to check the time. Going to bed at 650pm left me somewhat disoriented. I woke for good at 545am, or just as the coffee maker finished its brewing cycle. After 11 hours of sleep my body felt sluggish and tired, a common byproduct of too much sleep.
Sit-ups and push-ups felt more like a chore rather than a gift, but I struggled through anyway. Still struggling to find comfort in my new morning routine minus Sparky, I spent extra time online. I stopped briefly, delivering Mindy’s coffee at 610am. I spent another ten minutes or so online before moving on to meditation and stretching. Both went well. My plan was still to bury Sparky before going into work, but I hadn’t yet informed my boss. I figured I’d email once I was back form my run. Aside from the emotional turbulence that accompanied burying my dog, I still hadn’t settled on spot. Ugh!
It was warmer than the past two mornings. It was 30 degrees. I still wore two wicking layers, and a good thing I did. There was a chilly wind blowing in from the east. Aside from that, the run went well. During my run I settled on Sparky’s final resting place. It would be in the large flower bed north of our shed that once served as home to my weeping willow tree. And because we have electric running through the bed for uplighting, the spot would be just south of the old tree trunk where I was sure there were no obstructions. I felt much better about that spot than the other alternative, which was back by the kids tree swing, a low area that floods during heavy spring and summer rains.
Mindy had my eggs ready and waiting upon my return. I sent a quick email to my boss and peer advising them of my status. Mindy went to the garage to pay her last repsects to Sparky returning in tears. Bella went with her. Jacob wanted no part of the tearful ceremony.
As soon as Mindy left and my eggs were gone I headed out to get started. Ugh! Not easy. I asked Bella to holler out back when it was time to head for the bus stop. She agreed.
I unlocked the shed to access a tarp, shovel, mattocks, and spud bar. Before taking the first shovel full of dirt, I cleared the area of the English ivy, ajuga, and zebra grass. All the ground cover must’ve kept freezing to a minimum. The earth moved rather easily. I had to contend with two major root stems from the old weeping willow but they chopped out easily too. Fearing it time to get the kids to the bus stop, I broke off from the task at hand and headed back inside. It was 7:53am.
The kids and I headed to the bus stop, me with a huge lump in my throat. I was quite sad, but did my best not to show it in front of the kids. I felt much better about the prospect of finishing the burial alone, without the kids or anyone else around – affording me a few private moments with my dog. As soon as the kids were on the bus, I got back to work. However, before doing any more digging, I went in the garage and removed Sparky’s collar and got his favorite toy from his crate. Needless to say, it was an emotional few minutes.
Back to the spot. I made sure to dig the area wide enough and deep enough the first time, so not to have lay him down then pull him back out. I must’ve dug about 24-30 inches deep and about the same in width. It was time. Time to carry Sparky to his final resting place. I knew I needed the closure but wasn’t looking forward to it at all.
Sparky remained surprisingly soft and supple, still a beautiful dog really. I wrapped him carefully in the pale green beach towel along with his favorite cat toy then made the trek back to the flower bed. I kissed him and lovingly laid in the hole and said my goodbyes. I slowly added dirt, being careful and methodical. I stopped a couple of times to allow the lump in my throat to relax. Tears streamed down my cheeks. In fact, there doing it now as I write about it.
It didn’t take as long as I thought it might, and I used all of the dirt I removed. It felt good to get it behind me. I paused briefly after putting away all of my tools to contemplate our time together. I’m glad he’s now resting in a peaceful place in our yard that offers an attractive vista almost year round. I think I’ll add a marker later commemorating his life.
Inside I moved immediately to shower mode. It was 850am. I was ready to depart by 9:05am. I took a few minutes, however, to organize the kitchen and run the dishwasher washer – something we’d meant to do yesterday. I left for work at 915am, just after remembering to turn the temperature on the crock-pot down to low per Mindy’s instructions.
My boss joked about the excuse I used for being late. I knew he was kidding. Work was crazy busy. Yikes! Most years this is our slow time, but not this year. Like most other days, I didn’t take a lunch. We had discussed celebrating Lindsey’s birthday this evening back on Tuesday, but considering what else the day held, Mindy and I forgot to discuss it any further this AM. I sent her an email asking if she could pick-up Lindsey and the boys on her way home. I would, in turn, stop for a cake and a gift. Lindsey must’ve called around 11am to confirm our plans. I promised to call her back after speaking with Mindy.
Mindy called around lunchtime. She hadn’t yet seen my email about Lindsey but wanted to see how the burial went. We talked for a while. She agreed to pick-up the kids. Later, she emailed and offered to pick-up the cake too meaning I’d only need to make one stop for the gift. Cool!
The afternoon was very active. I ended up attached to my office until almost 630pm. I called Mindy to let her know that I would be delayed. My dad was coming for dinner too. I stopped at Target to pick-up a card and gift card on my way home. That didn’t take long at all. It was pouring rain, the first rain I can recall in maybe a month.
At home, the house was alive with little ones. The day’s one consolation was that I didn’t have to walk Ykraps in the downpour. Mindy remembered that there was a box on our front porch. We both figured it to be our new crock-pot. I carried it in but decided not to open it just yet. I greeted Lindsey, dad, and the boys.
The little ones were already eating spaghetti, apparently not wanting roast beef. Fine with me, more for us! Mindy began plating beef for everyone. I was extra hungry. The roast was especially juicy and tender. The mashed potatoes were yummy too. Everybody seemed to like the meal. Save for one small piece, we ate entire roast. I guess that means no beef and noodles over the weekend.
After clean-up we placed 8 candles on Lindsey’s cake - 2 representing the tens family, while the six others represented the ones. Hard to believe Lindsey’s 26! We sang, then sang again giving the kids an opportunity to blow the candles out a second time. We gave Lindsey her card and gift. She seemed appreciative.
While others had cake, I had one of the giant double chocolate cookies Mindy picked up at Kroger. They were scrumptious! Others agreed. They were a hit. After the birthday celebration, the kids played Wii Fit. They were too rowdy for me. I slipped into the other room. I eventually rejoined them. Around 8pm Mindy ran Lindsey and the boys home. Dad pretty much left on their heels after a brief discussion about Sparky’s last days. Sparky loved my dad! Fittingly, dad got the chance to join me on Sparky’s last walk.
The kids got ready for bed as soon as Mindy returned. I tucked them in around 840pm. Mindy and I retired to the sofa where we tuned into FOX network prime time programming for the first time all year. We watched Fringe. It was OK. I dosed off a time or two. We made a beeline for bed immediately after the program.

Over Slept ... Or Did I?
I overslept on Wednesday morning, not getting out of bed until 540am. But that wasn’t too big an issue given that I didn’t need to walk Ykraps. That itself is/was a 15 minute ordeal. I was slow to wake, even after exercising. I was in a not so good mood, thinking mostly about work related matters. Then, come 610am after delivering Mindy’s coffee, I decided to lay back down on the sofa for a tad more sleep. I don’t believe I fell completely asleep but did get some extra rest. I went vertical at 630am and did a brief meditation then a full stretching routine. I didn’t get out the door for my daily run until 650am.
Because of the late hour, I short circuited my run to three miles. That got me back home at the usual time of 720am. By the way, it was a very chilly 20 degrees at run time. Where’d all this warm weather go we were expecting?
Mindy had my eggs waiting at the table. Bella asked if we were still planning to do Sparky’s funeral after work. That was the tentative plan, but it was also dependent on the time I got home and the weather. Plus, I still wasn’t sure of his final resting place either.
Mindy left for work and I headed off to the shower. Bella headed to her room.
Like most other days, the kids and I met up downstairs at 755am and were soon at the bus stop. Chrissy asked if the funeral was still on for the evening. Apparently, they planned to attend. I may not have mentioned, Kenny phoned while were skiing in NY and offered to bury Sparky. Now that’s a good friend! But we, of course, declined.
This was Wednesday, meaning a number of meetings to attend. I’d forgotten that my boss and I promised/planned to take Ken to lunch this afternoon for his 46th birthday. We opted for PF Changs. We must’ve arrived sometime around noon. We all three order one of their lunch bowls. Those two go the pepper steak. I decided to try something new, the crisp honey chicken. The bowl is about $10 and comes with rice and soup – a good deal for PF Changs. I picked up the tab. It was my turn.
The afternoon went quickly. I was very busy. And as luck would have it, there was no way I was getting out of work early. I was there until 540pm. It was barely above freezing and pretty much dark when I arrived home. Burying Sparky just wasn’t in the cards. Bella expressed disappointment. I apologized but shared my reasoning. Worried that I wouldn’t have another chance until the weekend, I decided right then that I would simply do it in the morning before work, accepting the fact that I’d be late. After all, it was coming up on a week since he passed.
Mindy was making spaghetti for dinner. I was upstairs hanging out and watching TV with Bella when Mindy hollered for us to wash up. But not ten seconds passed before she rescinded that call. At the time, I could only guess why. Later, my guess was confirmed. She accidentally dumped the entire pan of spaghetti down the drain. Oops! That delayed our dinner by 10 minutes.
The spaghetti was decent but not her best. For one, we didn’t have meatballs, only meat added to the sauce. It was filling, though, and the accompanying salad was good, too. After dinner my belly was so full that I wanted nothing but a nap. After clean-up, Mindy, Bella, and Jacob walked down to Chrissy’s. I laid on the sofa. I didn’t wake again until time to tuck in the kids. But even after that I headed back to the familyroom only this time to the floor where I went out almost instantly. I was tired!
I didn’t wake again until 11pm or so, and Mindy was already in bed. I secured the home and headed to bed. I must’ve needed the rest.

Dorthy, we're not at HV anymore
Being Tuesday, that meant heading back to work. I was up on time and quickly all about my typical work day routine. I was a little out of sorts after finishing my sit-ups and push-ups, and not having Ykraps around to walk. I found myself spending more time on the PC.
I took Mindy coffee at 610am. It was time to meditate and stretch, something I hadn’t done too much of while off skiing. It was colder than expected, only 28 degrees. I bundled in my typical winter running garb and hit the streets at 640am.
There were no ill effects from the four days of skiing, validating the type of shape I’m in. I give a lot of credit to my recent stretching routine. I ran four miles without any problems. I finished strong, but also hungry. I started Mindy’s Honda before settling down for the eggs and toast Mindy had ready and waiting. They were goooood. Mindy left for school at 730am.
I hurried through my shower and prep. Bella called for me at 755am. We headed for the bus stop a minute or two later. I started the Trooper as we made our way that direction.
After the kids boarded the bus I returned home for some last minute tasks then headed off to work.
I arrived at work near 830am. Things were a little dicey to say the least. Not only was I buried in email after being out for four days, but the workload was way up too. It was difficult to get into the flow. Once things settled down a little I phoned daughter Lindsey to wish her a belated happy birthday and to plan a celebration at our place preferably on Thursday since she had classes both Tuesday & Wednesday nights. Rocky insisted on talking with me too. He asked to come over right away.
As I alluded to earlier, the day was frightfully busy. I didn’t take a break for lunch. That made the day go faster than usual. Before I knew it was 530pm. And because it was a Tuesday – a Jimaken night, Mindy wanted to visit Barley’s. The kids were already off with their daddy by the time that I arrived home. It was already dark too.
Mindy asked Jimaken to have the kids home by 745pm. We left for Barley’s at 615pm. It felt a bit awkward not having to walk Ykraps soon after arriving home, this our first work day since his passing. My thoughts briefly turned to him, and just how much we miss him.
The Barley's sign advertised HopSlam on tap! That perked me up a little. The only down side to that was that it was Tuesday. Once inside there was never a question. HopSlam me please! Mindy ordered a glass of red wine. Oh, and Stephanie was our bartender. We ponied up next to Calvin, who was sitting at the bar talking with Shredder Matt and my old golf coach, Vince Disabato. We eventually struck up conversation with Vince. I haven’t talked with him in many years. Among other things, we discussed our friends in common, Chrissy Gardner, our neighbor.
We didn’t hang at Barley’s long. We ate a quick dinner, however. I had a brisket quesadilla, and Mindy had a Barely burger. I picked up the check. We left for home at 730pm.
The kids were home just a few minutes after us. After a greeting the kids headed off to ready for bed. Me, I plopped down on the living room floor, put my feet up on my office chair, and took a brief snooze. Then, after waking to tuck in the kids, I returned downstairs where I quickly crashed on the sofa. We headed for bed around 9pm.

SKOL 34-3 SKOL
Up at 8am – no ski school – foggy
Same routine – running clothes in bathroom
Run up the hill to Yodeler lodge and back
Out of complimentary coffee at the door – crap!
Back to the room – others still sleeping
Change into swim suit for hot tub visit
Only person out there – nice but foamy - turned off jets – stayed in ten minutes
Back to room – eggs for breakfast
On the slopes by 1030am – still foggy
Started off on Tannembaum and Laurel – beautiful in the snow and fog – photos
Kids wanted to do Northwind, but after countless runs there Saturday, we took them elsewhere.
Skied until 120pm – to the room for a break
I was nervous, knowing I’d see/catch some of the Vikings playoff game – thought it started at noon.
It was still 0 – 0 with 7 minutes remaining in the 1st qtr. Vikings -3 yards from scrimmage – Dallas 80. Uh-Oh!
But lightning in a bottle – Brett Favre - was awesome Seemingly in the blink of an eye it was 17-3 Vikings
I hurried everyone through lunch and back to the slopes. There was 4 minutes remaining in the 1st half as we headed out.
Did my best not to think about the game – just ski baby!
We skied lots of varying terrain – I sent Mindy and Rene off to do blacks – I skied with kids
Kenny texted Mindy score – I asked not to be updated until it was a final. I was giddy but also nervous!
While skiing down a blue/black with the kids, Bob Imber phoned.
Bob would not call to rub in a loss – not his character. I knew even before speaking, we must’ve won. We did – 34-3. SKOL! I was so excited I took a wrong turn on a run and ended up in knee deep snow with the kids. No danger – just difficult to move in. We quickly found our way.
Phoned Mindy. She and Rene atop Mardi Gras. We meet.
Mindy also shares updated score from Kenny. I was excited.
I announced dinner at EBC to celebrate the victory in our Brett Favre jerseys.
Started to drizzle around 530pm. We called it a night – headed to the room. Forecast called for a change over to snow later. If so, we’d ski more after dinner
Drizzle changed to rain – Off to EBC at 7pm – packed – parking a challenge
I drop gang at door – Jacob and I park Honda on Washington St
Mindy has beer waiting
Quickly befriend others – Ann, Ann, Skid, and ? from Buffalo. A lot of fun
Also meet others from Ohio – have a condo local – have for 30 years. Love HV!
Rene meets Topper, EBC employee/server/bartender
We strike up many conversations while celebrating the Vikings victory!
Watch Jets/Chargers game on the bar TV’s.
Finally our pager goes off – dinner
I order quesadilla, Mindy steak, Jacob loaded nachos, Bella mac & cheese, Rene quesadilla, too, but doesn’t eat any. Drunk!
Rene wants to stay and hang out with Topper after hours – asks my permission
I agreed but later regret – ask Mindy to advise against – Rene listens but isn’t happy
We head back to the Tamarack Club
Rene sad – Mindy & kids tired
Rene & I go down to John Harvard’s for a drink
Sit at bar – I order a Southern-Tier IPA draft – Rene a stiff Shirley Temple – Talk for about 30 minutes – back to our room
Everyone agrees to watch Night at the Museum, but I fall asleep, of course

Ski School / Cadillac Jack's
Up early – about 645am
I thought ahead and had my running clothes piled neatly in the bathroom making for an easy transition while not disturbing the others who remained sleeping
Left for my run up Holiday Valley Rd towards Yodeler Lodge – all up hill - a gut buster!
Mindy was up and in the shower upon my return. We needed to have the kids at the ski school next door by 9am even though class didn’t begin until 10am
Mindy had bacon baking in the oven and was making scrambled eggs on the stove
Started some starbucks coffee too
Breakfast was filling. We had the kids at ski school by 915am. Yikes!
We quickly learned why they suggested an hour early – it was packed
Took 35 minutes to get them fully enrolled – they’re making a killing
$85 per kid for all-day ski school (10am – 3pm) but worth every penny
We didn’t waste too much time, although Mindy, Rene and I enjoyed a coffee with Bailey’s before hitting the slopes
We were on the slopes by 1040am. With Jack & Goldschlager in tow, we were off!
We did a couple warm-up runs off of Mardi Gras but after fighting a huge crowd decided to head to the less crowded Eagle lift and do the fun black runs it affords ( Falcon, Eagle, Hoot Owl, and Raven). We skied over there for about two hours before heading back to the condo for lunch
Rene went to John Harvard’s for a while to give Mindy and I some ‘alone time’.
Back on the slopes by 2pm, we did a few more black runs on the main face and then did Spruce Lake – their newest cruiser.
Time to fetch the kids
Mindy left Rene and I to ski while she went for the kids. We agreed to meet over by ski school in 15 minutes
We met Mindy and the kids at 315pm.
The kids were hungry but also wanted to show us their stuff
We ascended Mardi Gras and then Cindy’s.
Jacob progressed handsomely. Bella improved too, but still skis fast
Cindy’s proved a little much for both – the top was admittedly mogully, steep, and icy – tougher than some blacks
Bella bit it. Knowing her typical response, I encouraged the others to ski on. I worked with her one on one. She did much, much better. After skiing down, the kids needed/wanted lunch. Mindy & Rene wanted a nap.
Back in the room we watched football, snacked and napped. I wasn’t sure that anyone other than me would want to go back out. But after a nap, everyone did. The kids were stoked.
We agreed to ski runs they had become familiar with in class – Mardi Gras and Northwind. We must’ve skied Northwind at least ten times!
The kids found a big jump and started going over it on about the 3rd run. Rene too
Bella actually caught some air and stuck her landing on one run – very cool!
We skied until 7:30pm – everyone was having a ball
We tried to place a reservation at John Harvard’s but the wait was long – about 1.75 hours – Hell no! We opted instead for Cadillac Jack's – no wait and just a one minute drive
Jacob and I order hot wings, Mindy lobster bisque, Rene a salad, and Bella spaghetti. We shared a pitcher of Sam Adams Winter lager
Kept loose eye on the Colts/Ravens game – Colts won rather easily
Back to the room by 10pm – after another beer, off to bed

Concrete Jungle Where Dreams Are Made Of ...
Wake at 550am in preparation for our trip
Half expecting to find Sparky waiting for me downstairs
He’s not. Instead, still lying on the beach towel I laid him on last night
Exercise, time to walk Sparky, over come with emotion, cry like a baby
Grab Sparky’s leash and walk our usual route only this time without him – warm 34 degrees
I wake Mindy before leaving on my run – coffee
Meditate – stretch
Carry Sparky to garage so kids don’t find him while on my run
Ran three miles knowing we’d be skiing later
Thoughts turn to Sparky during my run
Back by 730am - Mindy out of the shower
I decide to load the Honda & Thule carrier before a shower – wise move
Shower at 800am. Mindy informs she told kids about Sparky
Jacob crying – needs consoling – Bella taking it pretty well – asks to go out and see him
I take Bella to see Sparky – Jacob doesn’t want to – I understand
Mindy makes scrambled eggs for all – smell/taste bad. Toss ‘em out
Load Honda with final gear
Depart house at 910am for Rene’s place – Arlington
Everyone slightly on edge
Mindy phones dad to share the news about Sparky – he won’t need walked
Space is at a premium- Rene has three or four pieces to shove in. We manage but it’s tight
Off to Ellicottville, New York
Exit off 271N near Mayfield Heights at Wendy’s for lunch – 1130am
Rene calls car repair shop where she dropped her Navigator – check engine light on. They suggest catalytic converter - $1600. No!
Back on the road by noon
Rt 90 across NE Ohio to PA. Rt 90 to Rt 86 east of Erie – only about 30-40 miles in PA
Rt 86 into NY – Southern-Tier Expy – across Lake Chautauqua to Salamanca
Rt 219N 10 miles to HV resort – Wahoo! – 3:15pm
Temperature flirting with freezing for the entire drive. Cloudy - no rain – no snow
Drive-up to the concierge – check-in – 3 keys – Tamarack folks help tote gear to room – lots of it!
Deal on 4-day lift tickets – kids pay for only 2-days – free Sun - Thurs
We park in underground garage and take skis & poles to ski check
Room #518 – hillside – not slopside
Small but nice – just under 500 sq ft – flat panel, fireplace, full stainless kitchen, two Queen beds
Relax – eat a snack – change into ski attire
On the slopes by 430pm
We take the kids to Tannembaum & Laurel trails (green and pretty)
Bella is in awe of the differences – struggles a little initially. Does the ski-to-me thing for the first few runs.
Rene stops in front of a tree waiting for Bella. Bella nearly crashes into it – tension high amongst all of us.
I suggest everyone else ski’s off and I ski with Bella providing one set of instruction – Bella concurs
I slowly show her the hazards that are non existent at MRM – trees, crevices, banks, creeks. She starts skiing much more controlled, following my lead. Once I asked her to follow the trail left by my skis she got the hang of it. Jacob was doing well, too. Bella admitted she needed a class. You might say it was a big ol’ ah-hah!
Take an hour long break at Yodeler lodge – EBC Pale Ale for me – kids hot cocoa and pizza
Ready to ski more. We skied until 830pm – the kids finally doing some easier blues comfortably. Ended our skiing on a very positive note. Let’s do the hot tub/pool then dinner!
Hot tub was awesome – met some folks from Michigan – friendly – invited to their room
Room to brush up – then the John Harvard’s brew pub for dinner.
Only three Harvard beer’s on the menu, but many others. I went with their Pale Ale – decent.
Ordered their Cuban for my meal – good but they got nothin’ on Barley’s. Sergio was our server – very attentive. Charge dinner to our room.
Back to the room and off to bed – busy day ahead!

The Last Twango
Today I lost a buddy, a buddy who has been there for me every single day for the last 12+ years. He was never one to put too many demands on my time, and rarely wanted to sit on my lap. That I always appreciated. He was always a gentleman amongst his peers, and a friend to almost everyone he met. Like with most friends, we went through a lot together. We must've taken over 8000 walks where we contemplated our troubles, although most were admittedly mine. Thinking back, I always did most of the talking. But in the end, he taught me much.
I'll always remember our first encounter at the Lane Avenue mall pet store and just how spunky and friendly he was. Then there was our last walk Thursday evening. Something felt different about that particular walk from jump. Our hearts connected, I think we both knew. Sparky, you were my dog and my friend. You'll be missed. I'll never forget you. I love you.
Your pal, ymmiJ

What to do with 6 Cradles?
I was up a few minutes early eager to get the day underway. There’s little question that getting more than 8 hours of sleep the night before left me feeling one heck of a lot better come morning. I started my exercise routine in the dark. As soon as my sit-ups were done I logged onto my PC to check the weather and a few quick headlines. I was really surprised to see that it was only 10 degrees when the forecast called for nothing lower than 20. I could see the sky was crystal clear. That must’ve been the difference. I also saw that the Buckeyes ended up winning that basketball game last night against Purdue after trailing by as many as 13 points late. Wow!
Ykraps and I bundled warmly then headed out for our walk. He pee’d a lot more than usual. Good! It was cold alright. However, beginning tomorrow, we’re supposed to top the freezing mark, I think, for the first time all year. Because of our looming skit trip, staying tuned to the weather has been an everyday thing. If correct, it’s expected to top freezing everyday for the next ten here in CMH. Lucky for us, that’s not the case for HV. My preference is for it to stay in the freezer through at least February, and possibly early March.
I had plenty of PC time after our walk, but like most days, the extra time went quickly. Soon it was time to wake Mindy. I did so with a hot cup of coffee. She predictably requested I turn up the heat. I did. I poked around on iTunes a little before bagging the PC thing and moving on to meditation and stretching. As expected, both went well. I was ready to run by 6:35am. I wore my usual cold weather garb – two wicking shirts and a pullover fleece. That’s it for the upper. I was maybe a smidge chilly for the first mile or so, but quickly got the internal furnace going.
I thought that I might add air to Mindy’s tires after my run but decided not. Perhaps this evening. I did, however, start and warm it for her. Meanwhile, she had my breakfast ready and waiting. I was extra hungry. The fried eggs hit the spot. Mindy left for work at 730am, and I was off to the shower a couple minutes later.
I was ready to go with a couple minutes to spare, although the kids were already out to the bus stop waiting. Chrissy and Makayla arrived the same time as me. Bella was eager to share that she and I saw two doe in the backyard this AM as soon as Mindy headed out door. We figured she scared them. I had the Trooper warming while at the bus stop. I went back inside for a couple minutes but was soon ready to leave for work. Darn it! I left the heater ventr blowing directly out instead of through the defroster. The windows were still caked in frost, plus, I was out of window juice.
I arrived to work on time. We had our typical Wednesday staff meeting that lasted until almost 1pm. In addition, I had a team meeting at 3pm to accommodate some new additions to my team. That made the day go by quickly. Sandwiched in between, I ran out to the Sawmill Rd Giant Eagle to get windshield washer fluid, ski beer, and some crystal light drink mix, again for our HV trip. I was back in time for my afternoon meeting.
The day went fast. It was after 5pm in the blink of an eye. I contacted the Thule customer service department about my broken cradle even though I had already ordered replacement parts the day before. I was surprised at how accommodating they were. Without any proof of purchase, the gentleman agreed to send me a set of four cradles free of charge. Very cool. Now, I’ll have to see about canceling my order. I must be doing something right!
I left work just after 530pm. For the first time all winter, I could easily notice the sun moving back our way. No longer am I leaving in darkness. In fact, it still wasn’t dark when I arrived home close to 6pm. The clear sky made all the difference. I already knew that Bella and I were having cheeseburgers while Mindy & Jacob ate leftovers. While Mindy put the finishing touches on dinner, I took Ykraps on his evening walk. Mindy shared that she was able to get him to take his pill by balling it up in American cheese.
My cheeseburger was really good. As a side, Mindy made cheese sticks w/marinara sauce. Those are really good for ya. Yeah! I had a few of those too. We talked about our coming ski trip through dinner. And to that end, Bella shared that she has to take her Friday spelling test tomorrow. She and I practiced the words through dinner. She does really well at visualizing the word. I am impressed. Her toughest words this week seem to be ‘could’ and ‘shadow’. But she’ll get ‘em right.
After dinner I did clean-up, and after clean-up I moved to rough packing. At the same time, the kids went down to Chrissy’s to play with her kids for an hour, or until 8pm. Mindy apparently decided to do some additional packing too. I had to remind her that I can’t focus with someone right on my heels. I wasn’t trying to be rude, just frank. I prefer to pack alone, and don’t want to count on anyone else to pack my stuff. That way I only have myself to blame if something is forgotten.
I got most of my stuff out and in piles. I felt pretty good about what I accomplished in about 30 minutes. Rene called to discuss travel logistics, and to share a few ‘special’ things that she’s bringing (Jack Daniels, etc). She’ll be dropping off her skies Thursday evening. Cool.
I spent the rest of my evening updating my blog and editing some photos. I still haven’t figured out a real simple way to shrink photos for posting to my blog using my new Adobe Elements 8 software. I’m betting there is an easy way, though. Once the kids were tucked in, Mindy and I watched a program on TLC about the ‘Hot Earth’, and how a seemingly small fluctuation in the mean temp (+1 or 2 degrees Celsius) can cause catastrophic results – drought, fires, geographic change, and ultimately death. Interesting program.
I tend to think the Earth does as the Earth does, with or without influence from mankind. In other words, the Earth’s climate changes over time regardless of what we do. A look back into the Earth’s history confirms my point. However, I also know that green house gases – carbon emissions are not helping the cause. We need to do our part too.
Mindy was tired and begged off to bed around 915pm. I had just poured myself a Goose Island Xmas Ale. I wanted to finish it. I ended up falling asleep after sipping away only half. I headed up to bed at 1015pm.

Imitating Death
Even after getting to bed a decent hour the night before, I woke a little late. If memory serves, it was 540am when I found my way to the kitchen. I completed my exercise routine then leashed up Ykraps for a walk. It felt much warmer, although it was still cold – about 20 degrees. There was another coating of new snow on the cars, walk and driveway, but it couldn’t have been more than an inch.
Our walk was good. Ykraps finely pooped after a couple of days off. We passed Kenny on our way out. He was monkeying with his pick-up truck in an attempt to get it started. As we made our way back towards the house we spotted him again only this time moving swiftly down the sidewalk in the dark pointing. Had he lost it? Was it a criminal? I wasn’t sure. But then we spotted a big buck darting across the street into our backyard. That’s what he had already spotted seconds before us. We see deer almost daily, but spotting a buck is rare.
As Ykraps stepped in the front door it appeared that he slipped on the metal threshold, but once I unleashed him he fell to the floor as if he were seizing, only this time he went totally limp and laid motionless on his side. I looked for signs of breathing, but there were none. I thought he was dead. For a brief second I was overcome with emotion. Then, after about ten seconds he gasped for air and opened his eyes. I was shocked! He then started seizing, albeit mildly. He sat there wobbling for about three or four minutes before it stopped and he rejoined me in the kitchen.
I went about the rest of my pre run routine like normal. I woke Mindy with coffee in hand at 610am. I cut my PC time in half to get back the time I lost sleeping late. My mediation and stretching occurred at their typical time slot. I was ready for my run by 6:40am. I ran 4-miles. It went really well.
Back home, I shoveled the new fallen snow and cleared Mindy’s car before heading inside for breakfast. She thanked me for my efforts. Soon she was off to school while Bella and I finished our breakfasts. We were at the bus stop at our normal time. After a little more time inside tidying up the kitchen, I was off to work.
Like most days, I skipped a formal lunch break. It was definitely a busy day but that's not why I skipped lunch. As the day wound down I figured I'd try calling the crock-pot folks one more time before giving up totally. This time I used the phone sales option. That got me through to a live body, Brianna. She was more than gracious listening to my story. She explained that they don't stock hinged replacement lids for crock-pots. She said for all of my trouble she was sending us an entirely new crock-pot if that was acceptable. Ahhh- yeah! More than fair. Now we'll have three stainless steel timer crock-pots. hehehe! Actually I knew we'd get use out of them all, especially around the holidays.
Feeling on a roll, I decided to try Thule again, too. They closed at 530pm and it was already 520pm. As I half expected, I waited on hold for ten minutes. I hung up at 531pm thinking I'd try to call again Wednesday. I left for home.
The weather was in the mid 20's when I left work. It felt warmer than it's been all year. I called Mindy, she wanted to do Barley's. The kids, of course, were having dinner with their daddy. So, after walking Ykraps, Mindy and I left for Barley's.
Stephanie, a rather new bartender, was working. We took two seats at a small table alongside the bar. The bar was full save for one seat at the very end. Calvin was seated at the table beside us. I ordered a Centennial IPA. Mindy ordered a Pint of Joe. Minutes later we placed food orders. I ordered a Cuban with bacon and fries. Mindy ordered their Brisket sandwich and greens. Mine was delicious. While eating dinner, Mindy chatted with Calvin. I watched the Buckeye/Purdue basketball game.
We didn't stay too long. We left at 745pm. Mindy phoned Jimaken to let him know that he could bring the kids home sooner than planned. We were home by 8pm. Jimaken and the kids arrived at 815pm. While Mindy whisked Jacob off to the shower I plopped down in front of the fireplace (no fire) and fell asleep. And folks, that felt incredibly good!
I woke just before 9pm to tuck in the kids then headed to bed.

Thoo- Lee
I woke at 525am, and although I’d been in bed since 9pm the evening before, I felt like I needed more sleep. However, I knew if I dosed off again the likelihood of waking on time would be minimal. I decided right then to drag myself out of bed and begin my work day.
I quickly found my exercise shoes and started into my sit-ups. I could hear Ykraps struggling to breathe somewhere nearby. I checked the temperature online. It was only 14 degrees. Another cold morning in the offing. Before walking Ykraps, I still needed to complete my push-ups. That was taken care of in a jiffy.
Ykraps and I headed off to the west, our most frequented route. Seeing him drink plenty of water the night before, and more than he has in maybe a month, I was surprised that he pee’d so little. I’d solve the riddle later. Sometime during the night, he pee’d on our tile floor. Back inside I did my normal coffee and PC time. I stopped at 610am to wake Mindy and deliver her coffee. She’s so spoiled!
I didn’t spend anymore time on the PC. Instead, I moved immediately to meditation and stretching. Both went well, and at 6:32am I dressed for a run. I wore a pair of tight running pants that left me much warmer than the loose variety, but the rest of my attire was the same as any other winter day. I was comfortable from go. A large portion of the roads were either dry or hard packed snow after the city plows went through on Saturday afternoon. The run was a breeze.
At my run’s conclusion, I fetched Mindy’s Honda keys to warm it up before her looming departure. She’s not used to leaving with a frozen car in the mornings. She had Ykraps’ and my eggs ready on the counter. I was hopeful that I could get Ykraps to eat his eggs and take his pill. Unfortunately, I couldn’t. He acted as if he wasn’t hungry. Well, at least my scrambled eggs were good. I ate a big ol’ plateful.
Mindy left for school and I dashed off towards the shower. I had to hurry, not getting out of the kitchen until 740am. For the second time in a week, I shaved close with the Quattro razor Mindy got me last Xmas (’08). I’ve shaved with a razor just twice in the last four years, and both times in the last week. Something different. Bella came to hurry me along once I was out of the shower. As I hurried down the stairs, I saw that it was only 755am. We had oodles of time.
I was just behind the kids as they scampered out to the bus stop. The bus pulled up at 8:03am. The Trooper was still warming/thawing, so I went back inside to take care of a few chores including unloading the dishwasher. I knew Mindy would appreciate that being out of the way when she arrived home later. I left for work at 8:20am after shutting down my work laptop and loading it with my gear. Off to work.
During my drive in, I listened to ESPN radio discussing the Packers/Cardinals playoff game. I was surprised to hear the outcry over the ‘missed’ face mask on the final pay that resulted in a Cardinals touchdown. Interesting banter! And by the way, most sports pundits are picking the Cowboys to beat the Vikings at home. I’m not sure I’d want it any other way.
I arrived to work at 835am. My boss was out ill and working from home. I brought along with me my Thule cargo box paperwork and my crock-pot replacement lid paperwork. I intended to contact both. Work was moderately busy – lots of weekend clean-up. I struck out calling Thule. Their customer service department is open Tues – Friday only. To save some heartburn, I relented and simply ordered the relatively inexpensive parts online via their parts page. The part is only $4. Shipping was $4.95. I ordered two just in case another one breaks. Next, I called Crock-pot who shipped us the wrong replacement lid. Their phone system put me in an endless loop. I tried multiple times. Interesting note about Thule, it’s pronounced (Too – lee). Who knew?
I opted out of taking lunch staying busy all afternoon long. Mindy phoned around 415pm having just left school. The kids were at Deena’s. We discussed dinner and our work days. We didn’t talk long, however. I left work for home at 520pm. My mom phoned just as I was pulling out of the parking lot at work. She wanted an update on Ykraps’ status. We chatted for about ten minutes. And for the first time I can ever recall, my mom actually uttered something positive regarding her own future – something like good things will almost certainly happen. OK, what have you done with my ‘real’ mom?
I arrived home at 536pm. Mindy & the kids seemed to be in good moods. I leashed up Ykraps then leaded out for our walk. The house smelt of dinner – cream of chicken over rice. The chicken was cooking in the crock-pot.
Ykraps only pee’d along our walk. I gave him ample time to do more but he didn’t seem interested. Alrighty then. It was beginning to spit snow with more expected through the night time hours, although accumulation would be no more than an additional inch. Soon we were back at home. I was really eager for dinner having eaten only sparingly throughout the day. Mindy shared that brother-in-law Jeff’’s surgery was a success - went better/quicker than anticipated. Seems all of our positive energy held sway with the universe. That was great news!
Dinner was delicious, perhaps too delicious. I had two helpings, eating way too much. My gut felt like it might split. After dinner the kids and Mindy put in the Home Alone DVD. I fooled around on the PC and then with my new iTouch, but eventually joined them for the second half of the movie. What a great movie concept – a combination of Xmas and cartoon-like humor.
The movie was over around 9pm. We all headed to bed at roughly the same time.

Digital Day ... ones and zeros ... 01-10-10
I woke just before 8am and headed downstairs immediately after brushing my teeth. It was Sunday, a no exercise day. After starting coffee I leashed up Ykraps, checked the temperature, and headed out into the cold. According to Yahoo, it was 8 degrees. Burr!
Ykraps was struggling to breathe. He hadn’t eaten since Friday thus hadn’t taken his meds either. Can’t force him to eat. He seemed fine otherwise. Back at home I poured some coffee and sat down at my PC station. I checked in with work and found a couple issues needing my attention. It wasn’t long before I heard Mindy stirring. I was surprised that she was up and about so early with no real agenda. She seemed somewhat somber as she descended the stairs. I immediately asked if she were going to church. Nope!
Mindy later expressed contempt for my coming to bed so late the night before. I reminded her that she slipped off to bed unannounced, and that I had expressed my intentions to watch Saturday Night Live ahead of time. She eventually came around. I wisely remembered to stretch before my run this time. I’m thinking it was just before 10am when I left for my run. It was sunny so I wore sun glasses. I ran only three miles, just as I often do on Sunday’s.
I wasn’t back from my run for too long when Mindy left for the grocery store. She was gone for about 90 minutes. I passed the time playing around on my PC and also doing a little work. I didn’t have anything significant planned for my time. After all, I was on-call. The early football game started at 1230pm. I tuned into CBS to catch that game – the Patriots vs. Ravens. Baltimore pounded the Pats – wasn’t ever really close.
I helped Mindy unload the groceries then headed up for a needed shower. I felt ten times better afterwards. Mindy was on the phone with daughter Lindsey when I went back downstairs. Their conversation centered around Lindsey’s school schedule and life plan. As Mindy & I predicted, the current plan is falling apart. I heard Mindy giving Lindsey our advice – the same advice we gave last summer. I won’t go into the finer detail but will say this. She needs to find away to make achieving her goals non-dependent on the whims of others. And we move on…
The kids, Mindy offered, would be home around 3-330pm. We didn’t have an exact time. They must’ve shown up closer to 330pm. I was watching football while also listening to some tunes on my iTouch. The kids were riled up fresh in the dorr. Too, Jacob was being loud and harassing Bella from the first minute. Bella wasn’t home long before she begged off to Becky’s next door. Apparently she invited her over to play this afternoon last Friday. Bella doesn’t forget. Mindy asked that she come home at 5pm.
Jacob was much more tolerable with Bella out of the equation, although he complained constantly about being hungry. But he is a growing nine/ten year old We watched football together through the early evening hours. Mindy said we’d be having pork nachos for dinner. That sounded good, but also fattening. I didn’t complain.
The last Wild Card playoff game started at 4:30pm – the Cardinals vs. Green Bay. The Cardinals took an early lead – 17-0. Everyone, including me, believed it was gonna be a blowout. Green Bay stormed back in the second half and tied it up 38-38 and 45-45. It was an exciting game. The Cardinals missed a short field goal that would have won it at the end of regulation, ultimately sending the game into overtime. Yikes! Green Bay won the toss. The first play was a long bomb that they just missed connecting on for a TD. On the next play the Cardinals forced an Aaron Rogers fumble and ran it back for a TD and the win – 51-45. Wow! Great game. Three of the four games went my way.
I took Ykraps on his evening walk during halftime. Earlier in the afternoon I got Ykraps to take his pill with a piece of rotisserie chicken. It made a big difference later in the afternoon and evening. We enjoyed our pork nachos around 6-630pm. They were especially delicious.
After dinner I spent time working and playing. We were gonna watch the Simpson’s 20 year anniversary show but just couldn’t get interested. We tuned instead to the Science Channel watching a couple programs – one about teleporting and then another about alternative universes. Very cool! Mindy popped popcorn at Bella’s prompting. Mindy made sure both kids were in bed by 8pm. Both she & I were both complaining of being too tired all evening long too. Mindy headed to bed at 845pm. I headed up at 855pm. I was exhausted.

Big Fat Thule
It must’ve been about 8am when I slipped out of bed, stumbled into the bathroom, brushed my teeth, then headed downstairs to begin my morning all the while Mindy remained lost in her weekend slumber. My clogged head cleared up considerably after completing my morning exercise routine. It wasn't long before Ykraps and I headed out for a walk into the cool morning air. It was a balmy 21 degrees with light flurries falling.
The cold air felt good, and helped wake me even further. After our walk I spent the next hour checking in on work and then writing in my blog. I wasn't concerned at all about the time, or more pointedly my run. Mindy must’ve gotten up around 930am. She printed a grocery list and worked on that while sipping her morning coffee. I readied and left for a run around 10am. As I was heading out the door I remembered that I hadn’t stretched. I stopped for a brief moment and considered going back inside to stretch but ultimately decided to run without doing so. However, I did stretch my hamstrings from the stoop like always.
My 4-mile run went really well. I must’ve arrived back at home around 1040am. Before heading back inside I broom swept the drive and put down a little more salt. Mindy was still in the kitchen in her robe. I asked about yoga. She still planned on going and also agreed to pick-up Ykraps’ prescription at the vet’s office nearby. She didn’t need to leave until 1130am. She also planned a stop at Target, too.
After Mindy left, I bounced back and forth between work and pleasure a handful of times. Happily, work remained calm. I was eager to get my new iTouch operational, and spent a good hour or two doing just that. In addition, I mailed off my $20 rebate from to Adobe. They really make you jump through hoops to get the cash, thus why most folks pass the offer by. That presented with my first opportunity to use my new printer as a copier. Convenient!
I was still fooling around with my iTouch with Mindy got home around 2pm. She got the kids a second pair of ski gloves for our trip. Always a good idea to have two pair. The sun came out late afternoon. I saw that as the perfect opportunity to try and mount our new Thule cargo carrier on top of the Honda. It’s been resting on the deck in its box since Thursday afternoon. I drug it through the snow and into the garage where I sliced away the cardboard box. It’s a very simple device – not much to it. I read the install directions a couple of times then decided to give it a go. The biggest bummer is that the Honda won’t fit in the garage with the carrier on top. That means I needed to do the install on our steep driveway. Lucky for me, the ice and snow was all but melted away thanks to the earlier salting.
I positioned the step ladder nearby just in case but placed the carrier atop the Honda from the ground. It’s fairly light – about 30lbs. I had a little trouble getting the grippers to the correct width but all in all it went OK, especially being the first time and in the cold temps. Somehow, though, one of the ‘cheaply’ made carrier cradles snapped off the bottom of the cargo box. Can you say instant irritation? After holding my own little swearing convention, I got creative and found a washer in my personal collection big enough to make the broken cradle work. I proceeded with the test. The carrier mounted up fine save for not enough rear hatch clearance. Even with the cargo carrier as far forward as possible, the rear hatch won’t go up all the way. I seem to remember the same trouble with Bob’s Yakima carrier last winter.
My original intent was to remove the cargo carrier after my test, but after conferring with Mindy we decided to leave it atop the Honda saving ourselves the hassle of stowing it and then placing atop the car again later next week. The only real down side is leaving the Honda out in the elements. Again, it won’t clear the garage door opening. Mindy headed off to Target for another shopping spree as soon as I was done. It was 5pm. She gave me an update on the Bengals playoff game – 7-0 Bengals.
Mindy was gone for about an hour. I spent the time playing with my iTouch and watching the Bengals game. Any momentum the Bengals had early on evaporated along with their slim lead. The Jets were punishing the Bengals offensively and defensively. The Bengals somehow got close in the early fourth quarter, but then the Jets rebounded with a quick score of their own, pretty much sealing their victory. Mindy gave me crap for being so critical of the Bengals play.
Mindy suggested she take me to dinner. I wasn’t on board 100%, especially initially but eventually acquiesced. We agreed on the Big Fat – a household favorite. After a quick brush up, we left for dinner around 7:30pm.
The Big Fat was packed to the hilt upon our arrival – good for business. We suggested a seat at the bar while awaiting a table with Katarina, one of our favorite servers. Mindy had a glass of Shiraz and I had a Jack & Coke. The Cowboy/Eagles game was just getting underway, this we could see on the big screen directly to our left over the bar area. We weren’t there long before the restaurant cleared out a little and our table became available.
Like all good servers, Katarina knows what we like to drink and what we like to order. She pretty much ordered for me. – scallops and a small Greek salad. Mindy also went with her favorite, the salmon and an artichoke salad. My dinner was scrumptious. Mindy said the same of hers. Katarina comp’d us a free dessert – lemon cake drizzled in raspberry sauce. It was tasty too. The Cowboys were ahead in their game, not for certain the score. Mindy made a new friend, a woman walking around with a toddler in her arms apparently in an effort to calm him. She is a teacher too.
We left for home I’m guessing around 9pm. Mindy drove. We phoned Chrissy while in route asking if she was up for company. Kenny was off hunting for the night. After arriving home, Mindy quickly changed into her PJ’s, and I grabbed a beer from the garage fridge – a Rogue Yellow Snow IPA. We walked down to Chrissy’s. Chrissy is a Dallas Cowboys fan. They retained control of the game from jump. It was quite apparent that it'd be the Cowboys and Vikings next Sunday at noon. Chrissy made it clear that she’ll still be my friend even if the Vikings win. She also asserted that I might be less kind should the game go the other way - her way.
Mindy started fading and even dosed off here and there before the game ended. We left minutes after the final seconds. I’ll bet Mindy was in bed ten minutes later. I was up a while longer, determined to watch Saturday Night Live. I struggled through the late news first. Apparently more snow coming Monday. They also shared that we set a record with snow some 14 days in a row. I probably saw less than 5 minutes of SNL, falling asleep on the sofa. Got up around 230am and headed for bed.

Contending with Snow
Up at 530am on the nose, I staggered to the bathroom where I brushed my teeth then gathered my running clothes all the while trying to remain as quiet as possible so not to wake Mindy. Pretty much a repeat of every other work day morning.
It was still snowing lightly, this I could see out the front door's sidelights. It looked so calm and peaceful. As I started my exercise routine it dawned on me that my throat and sinuses were feeling significantly better than the previous handful of days. Although Still not a 100%, this was cause for celebration.
As I typically do, after sit-ups I checked the temperature online. It was 10 degrees, and -4 with wind chill. I saw that Southwestern City schools were closed, so I went up and notified Mindy. She immediately asked about Hilliard. So far, no word. She asked that I let her know if that changed. I returned downstairs to complete 53 push-ups.
Afterwards, Ykraps and I headed out into the winter wonderland. The freshly fallen snow was about as pretty as it gets - soft, fluffy, and largely undisturbed. Thanks to neighbor Carl, our driveway and walk were cleared the evening before save for the additional inch that fell overnight. As he always has, Ykraps struggled to find the perfect spot to pee, relying so heavily on his sense of smell. But lucky for him, he eventually found his way.
Back home at 555am, I kicked off my winter garb and poured a hot cup of coffee. I returned to my PC for another 10 minutes of play. I read the Daily OM and a few significant headlines. Just after 6am Hilliard announced their school closings. No school for the kids, too. Jacob would be thrilled. He went to bed agitated that school wasn't yet canceled. I went about my business as usual. I still had to be at work.
Come 615am I did my meditation and stretching, which both went really well. I bundled warmly for my run. I was excited to get out there in the wintry setting. I found my best footing was about 6 feet off the curb in the road and remained there as much as possible. On occasion I had to jump up to the sidewalk or into a newly cut tire rut to avoid approaching traffic. The run went really well.
The house was unusually quiet with everyone remaining in bed after learning their schools were closed. I started the stove, bent on making fried eggs. I made Ykraps some too. He wasn't as eager for eggs this morning after eating more than he's eaten in days the night before. I was off to the shower later than normal, but because there'd be no bus stop time, I wasn't really behind. I saw both kids finding their way to our bed while I was readying myself.
After checking my Blackberry, I was troubled with a couple call-offs. In turn, I phoned one of my guys to let him know that I still expected him to work. I called one of my peers during my drive in. The roads were ideal - not a spec of snow or ice after exiting the subdivision. Hats off to Mayor Coleman and his team.
At work, I parked out front, which is rare. Once settled, I spent a good 30 minutes visiting with my team before heading to my own office to check email. Everyone was in pretty good spirits sharing stories about the snow storm. My boss and I had a good long chat mid-morning. The day wasn't as busy as I expected. For that I was grateful, especially given my on-call responsibilities for the coming weekend.
Come lunch time I was determined to get away. I drove to Dive Adventures which is located next door to McDonald's on Cemetery Rd. I wanted another mesh dive bag to store our mounting inventory of snow ski equipment, such as helmets gloves, hats and gaiters. First time inside the place. It was very nice - two pools for diving certification, and two diving/swimming supplies stores - one for swimming the other for diving. Both had mesh bags, but the diving store had a greater selection. I ended up spending more than I anticipated, $39, but found a really cool mesh duffle that doubles as a long back pack, too. It can hold most of the family's skiing accessories. I gathered some literature on their diving cert programs too. I'm already certified, but the kids and Mindy are not. Next?
After the dive shop, I headed next door to McDonald's to treat myself to a rare fast food lunch. I ordered a quarter-pounder happy meal. I snacked on the fries while driving back to the office. They're fries are far better than either Wendy's or Burger King. It's not even close! Back at my office I ate my lunch while digging back into work. I talked with Mindy who had her friend Deena and her three kids over for a lunch and snow play date. Mindy really likes Deena. She's quite lovely, sweet, and smart.
The afternoon was steady, but never overwhelming. My boss was agreeable to me cutting out early. I left for the day at 440pm. I phoned Mindy along my drive home. Mindy revealed that Deena and her kids were just leaving and the kids were getting ready for their weekend with dad. I suggested that I might be taking a nap. I was feeling a tad short slept after staying up late watching the NC game Thursday.
Deena was just backing out when I pulled up. The house was cleaner than I expected after a snow day and a house full of guests. That made me happy, and helped me relax. The kids were busy playing Wii Fit while waiting on their dad's arrival. I took refuge on the sofa and snuggled briefly with Bella. It wasn't long before Jimaken arrived. He tried the Wii Fit soccer challenge a time or two before they left. I found it somewhat comical.
It probably didn't take more than 5 minutes for me to fall fast asleep after the kids left. I slept until 550pm - not sure how long I was sleeping but I'm guessing 30 minutes. I felt much better after my nap and having a few minutes to gather myself. It was time to walk Ykraps. Mindy was quietly playing on her laptop. Ykraps and I walked around the eyebrow court just to our north. He pee'd, but that's it. I noticed he still hadn't eaten anymore food all day either. His pill was still tucked into a piece of cheese, too.
Mindy and I discussed our Barley's departure, agreed to leave around 7pm. With a little less than a hour to kill, I updated my blog. I posted the past 5 or 6 days with Sunday through Wednesday being only bullet-type entries. Using that style still captures the crux of my day's activities, but what it doesn't do is help hone my writing skills, which is another reason I like to blog.
Mindy & I were ready to go as planned. We left the house just a few minutes after 7pm. We took belated Xmas gifts for Beth, Bob & Mary Ann. We saw Bob & M.A. last Saturday at MRM but forgot to take their gifts. The lot was packed tightly but then again, most Friday's are like that. We found a spot towards the back.
We spotted our neighbors brother and girlfriend, Rick & Carol, heading in at the same time. Many of our peeps were in tonight: Rick, Steve, Lynda, Scott , Rebecca. Tom Clark and his roomie, Victor arrived minutes after us. We gifted Beth early on. We left Bob & Mary Ann's in the Honda after not spotting their vehicle in the lot. I ordered a Centennial IPA. It tasted extra good. I called Rene around 9pm to see if she was still coming out. Said she was, but waiting on her BFF, Susan. They showed up around 945pm.
Rene's planning to join us for our Holiday Valley trip next week, and just bought new skis the day before. Picks them up on Monday. We spent a lot of time talking about our trip. We're totally psyched. While chatting with neighbors David & Becky, they introduced me to one of their pals, David, who's a ski patrol at Mad River and Seven Springs. Has a house at Seven Springs too. Invited us to come out. Heck yeah! Sold us on the resort's features, but shared that it has a different feel from that of Ellicottville NY - HV. It's more of a self-contained resort - no ski town like HV. We may do a weekend there this winter, if not just once to try it out. Supposedly just a 3.5 hour drive.
We hung at Barley's long enough for me to have four beers - 3 Centennials and 1 Green Flash West Coast. Mindy got the tab and drove home. She drank two glasses of wine through the entire evening but had nothing but water for the last hour or so. If memory serves, it was just after 11pm when we arrived home. I glanced down at Kenny & Chrissy's. It looked dark. We opted for a relatively early bedtime instead.

The Other White Meat
Sleeping well the night before, I was up early Thursday morning – about 520am. My throat was still mildly sore and my sinuses clogged. I may need some antibiotics to get beyond this lingering cold. I was happy to see no new snow laying on the drive and walk for once as I headed down the stairs. That would save me 5-10 minutes of shoveling.
I pushed through my exercises then headed out with Ykraps. He hadn’t pooped in like three days, but he finally did during our morning walk, but still only minimally. I spent adequate time on the PC afterwards sipping coffee and surfing the net. It was quite relaxing. I woke Mindy at the usual time – 610am with a cup of coffee. I complained about my lingering cold. She offered to call Craig.
I read the Daily OM before moving on to meditation & stretching. As usual, both felt extremely good. It was a tad warmer today than many past. It was a balmy 21 degrees. I didn’t alter my garb at all. I left for my run around 640am and ran the full four mile track.
It was an enjoyable run without incident. My thoughts turned towards the Vikings and how they might fare in the coming playoffs. I realize that we’ll be in Holiday Valley skiing that Sunday afternoon & unwilling to waste good ski time watching the game. I’ll have to DVR and perhaps catch bits and pieces in the lodge during breaks.
Back home Mindy had my eggs ready. I immediately complained about them being much too runny. I fired the stove up and threw 'em back in the pan for another minute. At the same time, I fed Ykraps his eggs along with his Tramadol.
Mindy was off to school and me off to the shower. I was ready to go by 756am. The kids were already bundling at the door as I made my way down the stairs. Kenny was at the bus stop with Lillian and Makayla for the first time since Xmas. We talked briefly about the approaching snow storm – supposed to get 3-6 inches by Friday AM, but beginning mid-morning.
After warming the Trooper I was happily off to work. Work was busy, and I guess I am, and should be, thankful for that. Once again, I didn’t take a lunch. And as the day wore on work related stress began to mount. I wasn’t a pleasant man to be around, I admit it. In fact, I lashed out at one of my engineer’s. I apologized for my abrupt behavior later, but was extremely disappointed in myself for doing it in the first place. You’ll have that from time to time.
I was angry all afternoon. In fact, I drove home that way at day’s end. I could see that it was snowing earlier but it never appeared to be ‘heavy’ whenever I glanced out the window. The snow was piling up pretty well when I left. Plus, it was light and fluffy. Probably no more than 3-4 inches, but that was on top of about three already there.
I stopped at Kroger on my way home wanting to look for soft/chewy dog food for Ykraps. I couldn’t find anything in a bag, but did find something by Pet Pride that resembled the old Kenelration from years gone by. I also bought a small bag of some new Purina designer stuff that had some dry and moist chunks. I rounded up to the nearest dollar for charity. Good plan!
Homeward! The drive home was slow, slow. I-270 was at a crawl. The freeway was a mess - a snow slurry. It must’ve taken a good 40 minutes. The house smelt terrific. It was dinner. Mindy mixed leftover pork roast and taco seasoning. We were having pork tacos and burritos – yummy!
I walked Ykraps in the cold and snow. I was impressed with how fluffy the new blanket of snow was. By the way, setting on the rear deck was my new Thule cargo carrier, delivered as planned. Very cool!
Dinner was absolutely delicious. I filled myself with a burrito and taco. I poured some of the new food for Ykraps. He took a liking to it right away. He struggled choking it down but it appeared to go down far easier that the dry Purina chunks. It’s the most I’ve seen him eat in one setting for a couple of weeks. I plan to call the vet tomorrow to order more Tramadol.
After dinner clean-up I returned to my PC to tweak it’s config a bit. I’m not happy with the sleep timer and such. I also wanted to do a little blogging. I spent no more than 45 minutes on the PC, or until 830pm, and time for the national championship game.
Mindy had the kids get showers and then insisted on a reasonable bedtime. Both have been overtired and cranky lately. They were in bed by 9pm. Bella wasn’t yet asleep, however. Mindy headed for bed just before 930pm. I planned to watch the NC game at least until halftime. I fell asleep during halftime. I felt really bad for Colt McCoy, getting hurt on the first series and all. I’ve said for some time, I hope the Vikings draft him. He’s got the heart I want to see in my quarterback.
I woke as halftime wound down and headed for bed. I felt really tired. But like often happens, once in bed I couldn’t sleep. After tossing and turning for 15 minutes I got back up and headed downstairs to rejoin the NC game. I popped some popcorn and grabbed a Coke Zero. I half expected Bella to pop out of bed once she smelt the popcorn but she didn’t. I watched the rest of the game. Texas somehow got back into the game and actually had a chance to win with three minutes to play, down 24-21, and the ball on their own 7 yard line. But almost as quick as their comeback mounted, the game quickly got out of reach. After a fumble and an interception they were behind 37-21 and lost. Good night Irene!

Struggled to get through calisthenics but did
Delivered Mindy’s coffee before walking Ykraps to keep her on schedule
More fresh snow – about 2 inches
Cut PC time short – mediation and stretching – good stuff
Dressed for run – ran only three miles due to time crunch
Soft, fluffy snow – nice!
Back for my run by 730am – cutting it close for Mindy’s departure
Eggs ready – I put Ykraps’ pill in his
Off to the shower at 740am
Kids to the bus at 758am – start Trooper to warm and clear snow
Roads clear – arrive to work at 830am.
Another busy day – a few meetings that eat most of my day – lots of changes
No lunch
Receive call from Pilot delivery scheduling delivery of new Thule cargo carrier for Thursday afternoon – skiing is expensive sport.
Mindy and I discuss evening plans mid-afternoon
Taking kids to Aspen Ski & Board to outfit with season-long rentals – dinner after
I arrive home at 540pm after leaving a little early (520pm)
After walking Ykraps we prepare and depart
I-270N at a crawl from Tuttle until Sawmill
Arrive at Aspen Ski & Board around 640pm
Run into Matt, the kid that sold Mindy & I our skies last Feb. He takes care of us again.
Sizes and fits Jacob and Bella – takes a while to size then outfit and adjust. We browse during the ordeal.
We buy about a $100 worth of accessories including new goggles for Mindy, hand warmers, and new gaiters. Mindy got me a neck wallet too.
It’ll save us money and time having season long rentals for the kids. Not due back until April. Good deal!
We left ASBCO looking for a good place to dine. Tons of options near Polaris. We couldn’t decide. Ultimately decided on Barley’s
Arrive at 8:05pm
Calvin and Rick sitting together at bar. No other bar patrons at the time. Janet working.
I order Centennial IPA. Everyone else soft drinks or water.
Food orders: me a Cuban, Jacob Gates of Hell wings, Bella KC wings, Mindy, salad and something else- not sure.
Passively watch Buckeye basketball game on one of the flat panels
Food good. Jacob slips one of his Gates of Hell wings into Bella’s pile. I go along. Tries to get her to eat it. She doesn’t eat it. She’s done after two of her own. She’s always good for a pile of leftovers.
I picked up the check - $50 + tip.
Home by 915pm. Mindy insists the kids need showers but eventually allows them to skip
Kids in bed by 940pm. I fall asleep on the sofa.

Shoveling Snow Again
Up at 530am
Again, cold and snowy
Cold symptoms persist – throat and sinuses, wondering if this thing will end without the aide of antibiotics
Exercise, walk Ykraps, (he doesn’t poop – hasn’t for a couple of days)
Meditate, stretch – all good stuff
Run four miles – excellent run – again a soft cushion of snow to run on
Fried eggs – me & Ykraps - doctor his eggs with meds
Mindy to work, the kids to school – me off to work
Work crazy busy once again
I call vet to discuss Ykraps’ prognosis
He agrees that putting him under is not a viable option given his extended age – 12.5yrs
After our discussion he believes it most likely laryngeal paralysis – essentially the muscles in the throat stop working (opening and closing) properly. Agree that meds are best treatment, especially if they’re working now, which they seem to be.
No lunch – work straight thru
Mindy reminds me this is a Jimaken night
I share my desire to stay at home – not go out to dinner
Drive home – arrive around 600pm
Walk Ykraps – cold
Mindy warms leftover steak and baked potatoes
Steak is delicious – we share some with Ykraps who gobbles it up
After dinner I retire to the sofa. Kids home at 8:05pm
I fall asleep on sofa – down for the count

My Pride in Purple ... save for one

Forgot your coat? It's 14 degrees!
After a lot of fun the night before, I didn't wake until after 830am Saturday. We planned on skiing but there was no reason to hurry. We had all day. We had a house full. Glenn was asleep in the guest room, while Lindsey and her two boys, Landon and Rocky, slept on the air matress in Bella's room. I was mindful of our little guests & remained as stealthy as possible while going about my morning business. I wanted badly to exercise/relax in peace.
It snowed more overnight and it was cold - only 12 degrees. I enjoyed my alone time, completing my exercies, walking Ykraps, and sipping coffee. I woke Mindy with a cup of hot coffee before heading out on my run. I bundled warmly and headed out around 930am. I ran just three miles knowing I'd be skiing most of the day.
Everyone was up when I returned from my run. Everyone but Glenn, that is. He's been sleeping until noon pretty much throughout his stay. I helped make breakfast for the kids then made a big pan of scrambled eggs. I was determiend to eat a good breakfast prior to skiing.
Mindy and I discussed logistics. She would run Lindsey and boys home while I made sandwiches and organized our ski gear. Sounded good to me. She showered befoe taking them home. I packed our lunch while she showered and my own shower soon after they left.
By the time Mindy was home I was pretty much ready. I was dressed, had our lunch packed, and all of our ski gear accounted for and ready. Glenn woke sometime after 11am asking if we put the kabosh on skiing. Nope, just getting a late start. He started preparing for his afternoon departure. He'd be hanging around our house even after we left for skiing waiting on Dad to pick him up sometime around 230pm.
We loaded the Honda and headed off to MRM around noon, but not before saying our goodbyes to brother Glenn. As always, his ten day stay went fast. We did a lot of living in those ten days!
The drive to MRM went fairly quickly, this beign my fifth trip up. With each trip we get smarter with our organization, or so I thought. I dropped Mindy off close to the office to fetch our lift tickets. Ipaid. $180 - ouch! I waited so we could unload our skis and the kids right next door to the rental facility. It was the nthat Mindy revealed that jacob forgot his coat. Forgot his coat? It's ten frikin degrees, and jacob forgot his coat? Good friking grief! Yep, we had everything except for Jacob's coat. UUGH!
As frustrating as it was, I did a masterful job of biting my lip. I didn't want ot ruin an otherwise good day. We'd simply have to bite teh bullet and buy him a jacket in the ski shop. Mindy went to do so after getting both kids outfitted in their rentals. They know the drill well. While they doned their rentals, I fetched my own skis and apparell then parked the Honda. We were ready to hit the slops at 1pm.
Bella and I waited patiently for Mindy nad jacob, who were int eh ski shop looking at jackets. We spotted Bob & Mary Ann heading up the lift. We chatted briefly, me sharing our mini-crisis. We agreed to meet up later.
We met atop Four Star Express and took the back green trail to warm up. Until then, I hadn't seen jacob's stuff. Rather, I just heard from Mindy 7 Glenn. jacob struggled mightily but still showed promise. The last time i was with him on the slopes (Dec 21st) he wasn't snow plowing, turning or stopping. Bella, on the other hand, picked up right where she left off.
It was brutaly cold - about 14 degrees but with a stiff cold wind too. Jacob refused a gaiter and his face turned bright red. With the kids skiing so tentatively, I urged Bob, M.A, Scott and Zach to go on and ski without us. I didn't want to burden them with the family warm-up.
We skied three or four runs before Mindy asked if we could take a break. Before going in the lodge, I headed up Four Star for a fast run down by myself. Mindy was down with that. By the way, the park was packed. As it turned out, our friends were just ending a break whe nMindy headed in. I caught up with them just as they were heading back out. They handed their table off to Mindy and the kids. I headed in for beer after agreeing to find them later.
We took aboout an hour's break. During that time, Mindy fetched Jacob a gaiter from the ski shop. Mindy andI shared a pitcher of Sam Adams. The kids had hot cocoa and a pizza sub and popcorn. Everyone was in a much better frame of mind after our break. The kids were determined to do some real skiing. I was a little surprised at their determination. Just as we were heading out, Bob came in to hel pme finish my pitcher. I couldn't stand the thought of abandoning beer. :)
We skied some of the blue and black runs with all eight of us. The kids, especially Jacob, really started showing marked improvement. Bella, however, was skiing too straight and fast even after we encouraged her to do more turns. She cited the need for speed. Bob, M.A. Scott & zach were ready for another break. Our timing was off. We'd just gotten back out there. We stayed out skiing.
We must've skied until about 5pm whe nMindy & the kids wanted another break. And sure enough, our firend were just heaidng back out. I didn't want/need a break. I couldn't drink anymore beer. Mindy encouraged me to ski with the others. I did.
Mindy & the kids headed back out a short time later. We all skied together for the next couple of hours. During that session, both of our kids skied most of the difficult slopes, minus the terrain features. Jacob was doing great. And once again, Bella was skiing well but too fast, and not enough turning.
We had a really good time alternating our pairings and trails. By the way, the snow was awesome, although it got icy in spots after dark - always does. Scott & Zach must've peeled off near 6pm. We skied another hour or so. It was a lot of fun. Unless I'm mistaken, It was 8pm when we pulled out of the ski park for home.
We ate some of our packed food on the drive home, But evne satill, the kids and Mindy wanted me to stop at Wendy's near home. I granted their wish and stopped, but didn't get anything for myself. Once home , I walked Ykraps whom I knew had to be about ready to bust. I'm pretty sure Mindy had the kids shower before darting off to bed.
I mixed a Fresca, Cap't Morgan's and grapefruit juice. It was very good. Everyone headed to bed before me, although I started dosing from the sofa. I headed up to bed around 11pm after waking to an empty downstairs.
More to come...Friday, January 01, 2010
Oregon Trail
I knew heading to bed that I drank too much champagne while ringing in the new year, but at least I was smart enough to choke down 3 Advil beforehand. However, even that didn’t prevent a dull headache at sunrise. We stayed up until 2am. Waking early wouldn’t be in the cards. But come 815am I drug myself from bed to get the day rolling. Once I was up I didn’t feel that bad after all, but I took more Advil just in case.
I exercised and walked Ykraps. Just like the old year, 2009, above freezing temps were a thing of the past. It was only 20 degrees and snowing lightly. I bundled accordingly for my walk with Ykraps. Being a traditionalist, I tuned into the Rose Parade after our walk, but didn’t really watch. Instead, I spent time on my PC updating my Blog and downloading photos. The house remained quiet for a good long time. No one else was up until 10am or after.
Lindsey called around 11am and asked if she and the kids could come over for a visit. Sounded like she and Kelly were fighting. I could hear Kelly swearing like a drunken sailor in the background. Shameful! I asked that Kelly bring them over while we agreed to take them home later in the day.
I didn’t leave for my run until almost 1130am – a late start indeed, but I didn’t care. I was determined not to be rushed. I wisely did a thorough stretch before heading out. Football was already underway. Can’t recall which bowls, however. I ran four miles and it felt darn good.
The kids and Lindsey were already at the house when I returned. Lindsey was helping Mindy take down our Xmas tree. I left them to the deed until my help was summoned to remove the tree top. I was very happy to finally get the house back to normal. Mindy stayed after it until all signs of Xmas were put away.
Because we planned on skiing all day Saturday, Mindy planned to grocery shop during the early afternoon. She asked if I minded staying home with all the kids while she Lindsey went grocery shopping. I didn't mind. I watched football and actually did a little work, too, after receiving a call for help.
Dad dropped off brother Glenn around 3pm after a three day hiatus down at Mom’s place. Dad didn’t stay long. Probably left around 415pm. Seemed interested in getting home in time for the big game. Mindy was still at the grocery but arrived home minutes later. We all planned on heading down to Chrissy & Kenny’s Rose Bowl party near kick-off. We unloaded groceries then ate homemade chicken & noodles before heading down. We watched the first quarter from home. The Buckeyes lead 7-0 when we headed to the neighbors.
The neighbors had a crowd already, including Julie & Mike, Julie's mom, Ben & Ryan, Rachel, Guy & Missy along with everyone's kids. We blended right in. There 8 of us. The house rocked when the Buckeyes broke the game open and then held on for huge Rose Bowl victory, 26-17 over Oregon. Glenn made it known that he was pulling for Oregon. He was heckled lightly throughout the night. I should be noted that I predicted the Buckeyes would prevail 26-20. Close!
After the game the party was just getting started. It went from the Rose Bowl to lots of music and dancing. Long story short, we partied until after 1am. Mindy claims it was closer to 2am when we all stumbled home. Even Lindsey had fun. As Mindy later shared, she had eyes for a couple of Kenny's employees.
